loudest, but it’s going to sound amazing to boot. Heat management is always a concern. Too much heat will not only shut down your amp but may eventually kill it. We combat this by using specially designed cast aluminum heat sinks as well as our latest Dynamic Thermal Management circuitry to maximize performance while managing the heat production. Simply put, a cooler amp is a happy amp and will run for a very long time.
ALL THE POWER, HALF THE SPACE After seeing a demand in the marketplace for small chassis amplifiers, our engineers took amplifier design to the next level. They designed amplifiers that could fit in small spaces but also deliver on power and performance. The goal set was to take the elements of our larger chassis Power series amplifiers, along with our latest technology, and put them in a smaller footprint design without sacrificing power or performance. Thus, our Power small chassis amplifiers were born. These amplifiers are built on our proven Class AD and BR circuit designs allowing the amplifiers to be over 40% smaller while producing more power than the comparable full size Power version. Heat is managed with our 3-stage cooling system using forced induction air flow allowing you to really push these amps without concern of overheating.

But of course, these amps are more than just pretty, they’re feature rich and powerful. One such innovation is our CLEAN setup circuit which not only tells you if and when your music is distorting, but simplifies the setup of the amp. This gets you listening to your music that much faster. Power has also been addressed in the new circuit design with all models easily exceeding their rated power which means not only is your music clear, but it can get plenty loud.
BOOSTED RAIL
IDEAL FOR ALL YOUR MOBILE TOYS Rockford’s original small chassis amplifier, the PBR series was developed with a few goals and a select group of customers vehicles in mind. We wanted a small footprint amplifier that produced a lot of power but didn’t put a strain on a vehicles electrical system. We had our eyes on the motorcycle and UTV markets knowing that audio solutions for many of these customers were few and what was available wasn’t the highest in quality.

We developed the PBR amps to be ultra-efficient by using the vehicle’s own electrical system for a power supply and developed our patented “boosted rail” circuit that stores energy and then releases it when the demands of the music require it. This means that when you hit the road or the trails, you can enjoy your music knowing it is powered by an amplifier built to Rockford’s high standards.

In the early 70’s, Jim Fosgate studied the acoustical properties of automobiles by using a real time analyzer. Jim discovered multiple problems common in all vehicles; a midbass hump, a steep high frequency roll off and reduced bass response. This research lead to adding Punch EQ to Rockford Fosgate amps to help correct the acoustical deficiencies found in the automotive listening environment. The new Punch EQ2 is an on-board equalization circuit that when set to Low-Pass (LP) operation, becomes a variable Bass Boost. When set to High-Pass (HP) operation, it acts as a variable Mid-Bass and Treble Boost. When set to All Pass (AP) operation, both Bass and Treble frequencies are boosted.

MAXIMUM EFFICIENCY HEAT SINK APPLICATION MEHSA3 heat management technology takes heat sink efficiency to a new level. The key was to create a dielectric layer between the ceramic topside and the aluminum base that retains all of the electrical isolation and capacitive coupling of the early material increasing its thermal conductivity. The higher power handling results in a 20% reduction in thermal impedance.

Time and sophisticated test equipment have been replaced with Rockford’s integrated level setting technology called CLEAN (Calibrated Level Eliminates Audible Noise). Using simple LED indicators to identify both signal clipping from the audio source and the output level clipping to the speakers, this precise level set-up eliminates speaker damaging distortion.

Amplifier topology is the arrangement of parts in an amplifier design. These designs are broken out into ‘classes’. Each class has tradeoffs, making the various classes suited for various applications…like Class D or BD with higher RMS power, but undesirable noise in the higher frequencies making it better suited to power subwoofers.
CLASS BD
(Patent RE40550) - The Rockford Fosgate BD topology is more efficient than typical class AB and has lower distortion than class D designs. Rockford BD amplifiers are 75-80% efficient vs. 20-60% efficient class AB amplifiers. Delivering more power from your amplifier with less drain on your vehicles electrical and charging system.
CLASS AD - The Rockford Fosgate ad topology brings
our high efficiency BD amplifier design to a full range application. Using our Dynamic Frequency Switching to increase the switching frequency during lower output levels for better signal resolution. Coupled with Post Choke Feedback Filtering to compare the input signal to the output signal at the speaker connector removing any unwanted distortion. These technologies eliminate the inherent switching noise associated with typical class D designs.

The trans•ana topology operates the output stage with its full voltage gain, which allows the input stage to operate from a low voltage regulated supply. The signal is then shifted up in level to the high voltage section by the driver stage which forms an active node at ultrasonic frequencies. This results in a very stable, highly linear operation.

(Patent 8,212,620) - To achieve higher efficiency with lower distortion, Rockford’s BR topology combines, Cycle-by-Cycle, an indirectly coupled high/ low voltage rail linear topology with a switched high/low voltage linear rail topology. Heat Sink - This heavy outer shell protects the parts inside by transferring away the heat made reproducing an audio signal (music).
MOSFETs - A type of transistor used to amplify audio signal(music). You’ll see more of these guys lined up as wattage demands increase.
Circuit Board - Sometimes referred to as the PCB, is used to connect thisto-that through tiny lines of copper across multiple layers of pathways.
Power Supply - A.K.A the transformer, as the name suggests it takes the incoming voltage and converts it to a useable voltage for speakers.
Terminals - These are the connection points for the speakers or subwoofers and the power source(battery) for the amplifier.
RCA - These are the connection points for the audio signal(music) coming from the audio source (radio). RCA connectors are most commonly used.

Tweeter - Composed of the same parts as an speaker, surround, cone, voice coil, basket and magnet. Just on a smaller scale.

Frequency normalization is achieved by characterizing the frequency response of the audio source based on a reference input signal. This reference input signal is used to establish a reference frequency response, which is stored in memory and used to select equalizer settings. The system restores missing spectral content by summing multiple input signals from the audio source. The system then normalizes the frequency response based on characterizations of the signal by utilizing equalizer settings from memory.

The American Wire Gauge standard was developed to rationalize selecting wire for a particular purpose. In an electronic environment, wire size can have a significant impact on performance. Rockford Fosgate products are designed and engineered to perform at a superior level. It is only fitting that the accessories linking them together perform with the same expectation.
THE AMERICAN WIRE GAUGE STANDARD The American Wire Gauge standard specifies the exact amount of copper needed to indicate a specific wire diameter or gauge. Rockford Fosgate accessories are all designed and engineered in accordance with the AWG specification.
ANATOMY OF WIRE The construction of wire is broken out into three elements, strands, clusters and bundles. Varying these combinations will directly change the wire gauge and significantly effect the flexibility of the wire.
WIRE SIZE IMPACTS SYSTEM PERFORMANCE The smaller the wire gauge (copper content) the greater the resistance which results in a loss in power to your amplifier(s) and speaker(s), thus creating a poor performing audio system!

Dust – We make sure that displays and motor structures are sealed up tight so they look as clear as possible and perform day in and day out no matter how many times you hit the trails.
Water Tested – IPX5 and IPX6 Ratings allow for the components to be directly sprayed with water without water incursion.
UV Inhibitor Materials – Centrex and ASA plastic materials are used for their UV radiation resistance and components are tested in accordance with ASTM D4329 testing and certification procedures.
Corrosion Protection (Speakers) – Components are tested for salt spray corrosion resistance and conform to ASTM B117 certification.
Thermal Shock Tested – Products are tested for extreme temperature operation as well as severe fluctuations in ambient temperature. Components are taken to both low and high temperature extremes and then tested to ensure operational capabilities.
Corrosion Protection (Electronics) – Two part epoxy coated PCB boards prevent corrosion of critical components due to exposure in moisture rich environments.

DESIGNED AND ENGINEERED WITH A PURPOSE AND YOU IN MIND Rockford has long recognized a person’s desire to easily connect with their music. With that in mind we set out to create a purpose built line of Moto/ Marine source units equipped with all the latest technology and features. In looking at the market, we saw that many of the source units being used in Moto/Marine applications were simply repurposed mobile audio units and know that they were not originally designed to be in a boat, UTV or motorcycle environment. This is why Rockford decided to take the ground up approach in designing this new source unit line.

From a hardware standpoint we talked to both industry professionals and the consumers who use these products to determine what worked and more importantly what didn’t. From this we designed several units with varying capabilities to suit the needs of our customers from a simple streaming receiver to a hide-away control box with remote display. We also designed the software and menu system from the ground up making the menus easy to use and access. MOUNTING SYSTEM DEPTH
DISPLAY - The display is how you receive information from the unit and see the settings for the internal menus. It can also display signal and song information if available.
ZONE/ SOURCE CONTROL - A unit with multi-Zone/ Source control provides for more flexibility in system designs by creating different zones of the system and allowing different sources to be played in them.
INPUT SIGNAL - The number and types of input signals a source unit can accept help determine its flexibility in a system design and help you determine if it will fit your needs.
EQUALIZATION - The equalizer allows you to tune the system to your taste via a multi-band EQ or our own proprietary Punch EQ circuit.
MEMORY - The internal circuit that retains all settings and stations when power is no longer applied to the unit.
MOUNTING SYSTEM - The system by which the unit mounts into the vehicle and depth of the chassis helps to determine where you can mount the unit.
