Rhythm and Beauty Arturo Márquez Danzon No. 2 Joaquín Rodrigo Concierto de Aranjuez Daniel Bolshoy, guitar
P.I. Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 4 in F Minor, Op. 36
These inspiring works combine exciting rhythms with some of the most beautiful melodies in the repertoire. The concert opens with the famous Danzon No. 2 by the Mexican composer Arturo Márquez. The focus will then move from Mexico to Spain with Concierto de Aranjuez by Joaquín Rodrigo, one of the most frequently performed instrumental concertos by a 20th-century composer. The program will close with Tchaikovsky’s iconic Symphony No. 4, nicknamed “Fatum” (fate). The nickname comes from the rhythmic figuration that ties the symphony together, reminding us of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony (another symphony described as fate knocking on the door).

The Great Gatsby
John Harbison Remembering Gatsby, Foxtrot for Orchestra Florence Price Piano Concerto in One Movement Tengku Ahmad Irfan, piano Aaron Copland Quiet City E.W. Korngold Much Ado About Nothing Suite George Gershwin Gershwin in Hollywood
Harken back to the Golden Age of film with a blend of the rich musical jazz traditions of the early 20th century. The centerpiece of this concert is Florence Price’s Piano Concerto, a single movement work rooted in jazz and full of great melodies and rhythmic drive. Harbison’s witty and clever orchestration in Remembering Gatsby provides a tongue-in-cheek homage to the lost ‘20s era.

What is the “Hollywood Sound”? Where did it come from and how did it evolve? From Steiner’s Casablanca to Hermann’s Psycho, Hisaishi’s Studio Ghibli films to John Williams’ Star Wars—the sound of film is varied and complex. The great orchestral film composers from the Golden Age of Cinema to today have drawn inspiration from classical composers such as Rachmaninoff, Holst, Korngold, Mahler, and Ravel. This program features film classics alongside the romantic, powerful, and songful Piano Concerto No. 2 by Sergei Rachmaninoff, performed by international superstar Wei Luo.

Spring Love and Butterflies W.A. Mozart Symphony No. 35 in D Major (“Haffner”), K.385 He Zhanhao Butterfly Lover’s Concerto Michèle Lekas, violin, concertmaster John Williams The Chairman’s Waltz from Memoirs of a Geisha Aaron Copland Appalachian Spring Johann Strauss Blue Danube Waltz
Copland’s beloved Appalachian Spring captures the American pioneer spirit of hope with his ballet about a newlywed couple building a new home in Pennsylvania. Love is in the air with John William’s Chairman’s Waltz and the tragic story of the Butterfly Lovers told through tender and poignant music. We celebrate the newness of spring with the freshness of Mozart and the renewal of nature with Strauss’s Blue Danube.

Brahms’s Fourth John Williams The Cowboys Overture E.W. Korngold Violin Concerto in D Major, Op. 35 Blake Pouliot, violin Johannes Brahms Symphony No. 4 in E Major, Op. 98
John Williams, arguably the most renowned and prolific living film composer, captures the adventurous spirit and rugged landscape of the wild west in the 1972 motion picture The Cowboys. Renowned violinist Blake Pouliot joins us for Erich Korngold’s soaring Violin Concerto. Known for his lyrical film scores of Hollywood’s Golden Age, Korngold created a cinematic concerto that places our soloist in the spotlight. Brahms’s Fourth Symphony is a titan of the symphonic repertoire. In his final symphony, the composer weaves a musical narrative evoking both dramatic intensity and profound serenity delivering a concert finale of heightened emotion.

New Horizons Caroline Shaw Entr’acte Maurice Ravel Tzigane Vittorio Monti Czardas (arr. Yang) The Animals House of the Rising Sun (arr. Yang) The Beatles Blackbird (arr. Yang) Charles Yang, violin and vocalist Antonin Dvořák Symphony No. 8 in G Major, Op. 88
Folk music, improvisation, and birdsong are the three main themes of this program. Guest artist Charles Yang breaks the boundaries between musical genres in a most natural way. A recent quote in the Boston Globe stated that Charles “plays classical violin with the charisma of a rockstar.” His arrangements in this concert are fresh and inventive: the Czardas includes a blues solo and breakdown; in Blackbird the orchestra “improvises” in cells creating a rainforest like effect; and House of the Rising Sun has equally impressive solo vocals and violin parts happening at the same time. The concert culminates with Dvořák’s Eighth Symphony, a cheerful work built from Bohemian folk music and inspired by the tranquil landscapes of the composer’s native land.

Deconstructing Beethoven L.v. Beethoven Symphony No. 7 in A Major, Op. 92 Louise Farrenc Overture No. 1 in E Minor, Op. 23 Gabriel Prokofiev BEETHOVEN9: Symphonic Remix Gabriel Prokofiev, electronics
The timeless genius of Beethoven forced a reckoning on the musical world, one which we are still coming to terms with today. Composers who lived immediately after Beethoven, such as Frenchwoman Louise Farrenc, were deeply influenced by his aura and modeled their music in a “Germanic” style. Fast-forward nearly two centuries and we continue to marvel at Beethoven’s ability to shape time, harmony, and musical expectations, yet there are still novel ways to interpret his music. DJ and composer Gabriel Prokofiev (the grandson of Sergei Prokofiev) spins and remixes the elements of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony utilizing funk, electronics, and catchy club rhythms into his own contemporary and engaging vernacular.
