A Note from the Music Director October 23, 2021 Welcome to the first show of the muchanticipated, long-delayed “Steve Larsen Farewell Concert Tour!” T-shirts, bobbleheads and souvenir merch will be available at intermission in the lobby (or not). Tonight’s program is a rather ungainly hybrid: the first half is a parade of some of my favorite finales (for my own finale: get it?) followed by an attempt to relive the fun of our 2019 “Last Night of the Proms” concert. It’s a perfect example of what happens when one tries to cram too much into too little time — for which I have regrets but no apologies. We’ll play some great music, take a short intermission and then have a lot of fun with some sing-alongs and assorted British silliness and traditions. After tonight’s extravaganza, we’ll join the Rockford Dance Company for “The Nutcracker” in December, followed by a final Holiday Pops concert with the Nielsen Chorale — twenty-eight years after the RSO’s first Pops concert — after which I will exit stage right for the last time. Whether your tastes lean towards the traditional concert or the pops format, I think you’ll enjoy this concert. But I think I speak for many of you when I say that the greatest thrill tonight will come from being in the Coronado with a full audience and an orchestra and chorus on stage. It’s been a while: our last performance was March 7, 2020, just before everything shut down. Technology makes it possible for us to enjoy music in the privacy of our own homes, our cars, or through our phones or portable screens, but it can’t compare to that joyful feeling of experiencing it live with others. Welcome back, everyone: audience, ushers, orchestra, chorus, stage hands, box office personnel! And enjoy!

Music Director Steven Larsen has been Music Director of the Rockford Symphony Orchestra for 30 years and will be officially retiring in December of 2021. During his tenure the orchestra has flourished and grown to become the third largest symphony orchestra in Illinois. His energetic leadership earned two “Orchestra of the Year” awards to the Rockford Symphony Orchestra and three “Conductor of the Year” awards for himself, the most recent in 2016. Critics have praised his ease with all ranges of musical styles and periods, his sense of line and dramatic tension, and his ability to bring new life to familiar music. Audiences respond warmly to his informal podium style and enjoy his enthusiastic desire to communicate his love for music. Larsen is a native of Chicago, where he attended the American Conservatory of Music, receiving a degree in music theory and composition. As his interests in conducting grew, he auditioned for the graduate program at Northwestern University, earning an assistantship and leading to studies with Margaret Hillis and Bernard Rubenstein. He received that school’s first Master of Music in orchestral conducting in 1976. In 1979 he was the only American to be awarded a fellowship in the prestigious Netherlands Broadcasting Company Conductors Course, leading to continued studies with the late Russian conductor Kyrill Kondrashin. In 1981 he was invited to participate in the first Conductors Institute, held in Morgantown, West Virginia, as a conducting fellow. A significant portion of his career has been devoted to opera. For 13 years, he was resident conductor and Artistic Administrator of Chicago Opera Theater, where he also produced the New Opera Workshop. He has guest conducted for opera companies in Chicago, Detroit, Minneapolis, Honolulu, Cleveland, Westchester (NY), and Dayton (OH), returning to Dayton for a season as Interim General Director. For three years he was Principal Conductor for Opera Theater of San Antonio. His many symphonic guest conducting engagements include the State Orchestra of Mexico; the Camerata Polifonica Siciliana in Catania, Italy; the Milwaukee Symphony, Grant Park Symphony and Tulsa Philharmonic, as well as leading several children’s concerts with the Chicago Symphony. In 2012 he traveled to Prague to conduct the Hradec Králové Philharmonic. He has received the “Star of Excellence” Award from the Mendelssohn Performing Arts Center, the “Mayor’s Arts Award for Distinguished Service by an Individual”, and the “Distinguished Service” Award from the Rockford Park District. In May of 2021, Larsen was honored as the City of Rockford Distinguished Artist of the Year from the Rockford Area Arts Council.

Nielsen Chorale 2019-2020 marked the inaugural season of The Nielsen Chorale, resident chorus of the Rockford Symphony Orchestra. The Chorale’s name honors Ralph Nielsen (19161995), the founding father of choral music in Rockford and one of the city’s most important musicians of the 20th century. Business owner, singer, and conductor, Ralph passionately promoted music in our community, especially choral music. He was also the patriarch of a remarkably distinguished musical family that spans three generations (so far). The Nielsen Chorale is committed to continuing the high standards of choral music performance that he started decades ago. The Chorale is incorporated as an independent 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization. Its mission is “to enrich and inspire our community through choral music.” Artistic leadership is provided by Music Director Martha Bein, who led the Mendelssohn Chorale from 1994-2019.

Guest Artists Christopher Brady After the longest reprieve from live music and art that a society can possibly go through without having social media take absolute control of its denizens’ lives, Chris Brady is grateful to be back with the greatest night of our lives - the Proms! Honestly, we didn’t intend for the last time to truly be the Last Night of the Proms...but that was close. Artistic Director of Starlight Theatre and long-time respected Rockford performer, Chris studied musical theatre at The American Musical and Dramatic Academy, NYC; was co-creator of (usual) Suspects, a local theatre troupe here in Rockford; and has performed most of his life at theatres in the area including Starlight Theatre, Timberlake Playhouse, Artists’ Ensemble Theatre, and (usual) Suspects. Tonight, however, Chris would like to abandon the respect his past has garnered and prove himself the fool once again! So, be a part of it with Chris, the RSO, the rest, and join the fun. Carouse a good health to the Maestro and bob up and down for the heck of it. This is the last night of the Proms, so live it. Long live the Queen and God bless America! The same to his wife, Erin, and his daughters Ophelia and Imogen who will only be appalled by his performance here tonight.

Martha Bein Martha Bein, Music Director of the Nielsen Chorale, is a multifaceted musician with extensive experience in conducting, vocal performance, musical theater, education, and church music. After earning degrees at Baldwin Wallace College (OH) and Cleveland State University, she continued post-graduate education with Fellowships at the Klingenstein Center at Teachers College, Columbia University (NY), Northwestern University School of Music, and the Conductors Institute of South Carolina. Marti has served as Chorus Master for Chicago Opera Theater, Lyric Opera Cleveland, the Bel Canto Foundation, as Music Director for the Shaker Symphony in Cleveland, OH, and the Mendelssohn Chorale in Rockford. For eight years she conducted the Rockford Lutheran Choral Union’s annual performances of Handel’s Messiah. Her teaching positions include Laurel School in Cleveland, where she also chaired the Fine Arts Faculty; Lake Forest Academy (IL); and Keith Country Day School. An ordained ELCA Deacon, Marti has served as Director of Worship and Music at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church and St. Mark Lutheran Church. Recently returning to her passion, teaching middle school students, Marti’s current title is Creative and Performing Arts Choir Director at Rockford’s West Middle School.

Lyrics Richard Wagner, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg APPRENTICES Silence! Silence! No talking and no murmuring! THE PEOPLE Ha! Sachs! It's Sachs! Look, Master Sachs! Begin! Begin! Begin! ALL "Awake! the dawn is drawing near; I hear a blissful nightingale singing in the green grove, its voice rings through hill and valley; night is sinking in the west, the day arises in the east, the ardent red glow of morning approaches through the gloomy clouds." HANS SACHS Scorn not the Masters, I bid you, and honor their art! What speaks high in their praise fell richly in your favor. Not to your ancestors, however worthy, not to your coat-of-arms, spear, or sword, but to the fact that you are a poet, that a Master has admitted you to that you owe today your highest happiness. So, think back to this with gratitude: how can the art be unworthy which embraces such prizes?

1616

That our Masters have cared for it rightly in their own way, cherished it truly as they thought best, that has kept it genuine: if it did not remain aristocratic as of old, when courts and princes blessed it, in the stress of evil years it remained German and true; and if it flourished nowhere but where all is stress and strain, you see how high it remained in honor what more would you ask of the Masters? Beware! Evil tricks threaten us: if the German people and kingdom should one day decay, under a false, foreign rule soon no prince would understand his people; and foreign mists with foreign vanities they would plant in our German land; what is German and true none would know, if it did not live in the honor of German Masters. Therefore I say to you: honor your German Masters, then you will conjure up good spirits! And if you favor their endeavors, even if the Holy Roman Empire should dissolve in mist, for us there would yet remain holy German Art! THE PEOPLE Hail! Sachs! Hail to you, Hans Sachs! Hail to Nuremberg's dear Sachs!

Lyrics “Mary Poppins” Medley Chim-chiminey, chim-chiminey, chim chim cheree! A sweep is as lucky as lucky can be! Chim-chiminey, chim-chiminey, chim chim cheroo! Good luck will rub off when he shakes hands with you. Or blow me a kiss and that’s lucky, too! Up where the smoke is all billered and curled, ‘Tween pavement and stars, is the chimney sweep’s world. When there’s hardly no day nor hardly no night There’s things half in shadow and half way in light. On the rooftops of London, coo, what a sight! Chim-chiminey, chim-chiminey, chim chim cheree! When you’re with a sweep you’re in glad company. Nowhere is there a more happier crew Than them what sings “chim-chim cheree, chim cheroo!” Ain’t it a glorious day, right as the morning in May? I feel like I could fly. Have you ever seen the grass so green, or a bluer sky? Oh, it’s a jolly holiday with Mary, Mary makes your heart so light. When the day is gray and ordinary, Mary makes the sun shine bright. Oh, happiness is bloomin’ all around her, The daffodils are smilin’ at the dove; When Mary holds your hand you feel so grand. Your heart starts beatin’ like a big brass band. It’s a jolly holiday with Mary! No wonder that it’s Mary that we love! Oh, it’s a jolly holiday with Mary! A jolly, jolly holiday with you. A jolly, jolly holiday with you. Um diddle-diddle-diddle um diddle-aye, Um diddle-diddle-diddle um diddle-aye (repeat)

Su-per-cal-i-frag-il-is-tic-ex-pi-al-i-do-cious! Even though the sound of it is something quite atrocious, If you say it loud enough you’ll always sound precocious: Su-per-cal-i-frag-il-is-tic-ex-pi-al-i-do-cious! Um diddle-diddle-diddle um diddle-aye, Um diddle-diddle-diddle um diddle-aye. Because I was afraid to speak when I was just a lad, Me father gave me nose a tweak and told me I was bad. But then one day I learned a word that saved me achin’ nose, The biggest word you ever heard, and this is how it goes. Oh! Su-per-cal-i-frag-il-is-tic-ex-pi-al-i-do-cious! Su-per-cal-i-frag-il-is-tic-ex-pi-al-i-do-cious! Su-per-cal-i-frag-il-is-tic-ex-pi-al-i-do-cious! Su-per-cal-i-frag-il-is-tic, Su-per-cal-i-frag-il-is-tic, Su-per-cal-i-frag-il-is-tic-ex-pi-al-i-do-cious! Step in time, step in time, step in time, step in time. Never need a reason, never need a rhyme When you step in time, you step in time. Kick your knees up, step in time, kick your knees up, step in time. Never need reason, never need a rhyme Kick your knees up, step in time. ‘Round the chimney, ‘round the chimney, ‘round the chimney, step in time. ‘Round the chimney, step in time. Never need reason, never need a rhyme, ‘Round the chimney, in time! Link your elbows, step in time. Link your elbows, step in time. Never need a reason, never need a rhyme. Link your elbows, link your elbows in time. Step in time, step in time, step in time, step in time. Never need a reason, never need a rhyme when you step in time. Kick your knees up, ‘round the chimney, link your elbows, step in time When you step in time you step in time.

Lyrics “Oh, Danny Boy” Oh, Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling From glen to glen, and down the mountain side. The summer's gone, and all the roses falling, It's you, it's you must go and I must bide. But come ye back when summer's in the meadow, Or when the valley's hushed and white with snow, ‘Tis I'll be here in sunshine or in shadow, Oh, Danny boy, oh Danny boy, I love you so!

But when ye come, and all the flowers are dying, If I am dead, as dead I well may be, You'll come and find the place where I am lying, And kneel and say an Ave there for me. And I shall hear, though soft you tread above me, And all my grave will warmer, sweeter be, For you will bend and tell me that you love me, And I shall sleep in peace until you come to me!

“I Vow To Thee, My Country” (Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity) I vow to thee, my country all earthly things above; Entire and whole and perfect, the service of my love; The love that asks no questions, the love that stands the test, That lays upon the altar the dearest and the best; The love that never falters, the love that pays the price, The love that makes undaunted the final

sacrifice. And there’s another country, I’ve heard of long ago, Most dear to them that love her, most great to them that know; And soul by soul and silent, her shining bounds increase, Her ways are ways of gentleness and all her paths are peace.

“Land Of Hope And Glory” (Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1) Land of hope and glory, mother of the free How shall we extol thee, who are born of thee? Wider still and wider shall thy bounds be set. The Rockford Symphony Orchestra Foundation was established in 2007 to build a permanent endowment to benefit the Rockford Symphony Orchestra. The Foundation prudently invests donated funds to generate annual income in perpetuity for the RSO. Special opportunities are available to endow a chair, a program, or to underwrite RSO musicians. Naming chairs or programs recognizes donors (or honors a person dear to a donor) in a most caring and enduring way. Endowed chairs and programs are named in perpetuity. For more information about supporting the Rockford Symphony Orchestra Foundation, please call 815.965.0049.
