Central Queensland Comedy Food Critic, Fork You Later, reviews two of Rockhampton’s newest asian restaurants Follow him at @cqfoodrater on Facebook

Pho House

As soon as we walked in we were met with big smiles and made to feel welcome. We quickly noticed that Pho House is truly family run as all members of the family worked together to get our table ready and take our orders. The restaurant was clean, bright and the menu was the same. I went for the house speciality of Pho Soup. First, the presentation of our meals was impeccable, laid out like the jade palace cooks themselves had prepared our dishes. The Pho Soup had layers of meat and submerged noodles, bursts of coriander, pork and chilli that called to me like a water spirit to dive in without taking a breath and I happily took its command – Vietnamese cooking at its apex. Combined with a great price point, it’s so good to finally have true Vietnamese cuisine in Rockhampton that was delicious and affordable. Location: Unit 2/235-239 Musgrave St, Berserker | 0434 226 426

The Barbecue Box

For the full reviews check out @cqfoodrater on Facebook

As we continue our journey to the East we started hearing about a fabled location wrapped in the mystical arts of the Korean BBQ. We made our way to this palace of heated charcoal ready for something new and exciting and we were not disappointed. As soon as we walked in the amazing aromas welcomed us, followed by friendly staff that provided a menu that consisted of BBQ styles from every corner of the East. I chose the Sizzling Chicken Bulgogi and waited patiently for that crackling sound to approach the table with glee - in no time at all my meal arrived and all I can say is, “wow!” The colours and layout of the dish screamed flavour and culture and most importantly it was beyond yum! Barbecue Box is the grandmaster monk of BBQ and I will happily be their student from now on. I look forward to returning. Exciting things are emerging in Mount Morgan with the recent opening of new No7 Art Gallery.

W

ith a vision to add to the beauty of the town and uplift the community and visitors, gallery opener Kirra Swain is excited to create a collaborative art space with community-minded people. The space caters to a varied audience from experienced artists looking for exposure for their work, to the hobbyist looking for an outlet, to emerging artists looking for local resources and encouragement, making the gallery the creative hub of the town.

IT’S REALLY EXCITING – we’ll even be doing large community projects such as creating murals and sculptures with a view to beautify the town. We also have a space next door to the gallery for our outdoor sculpture garden, I’m also hoping that it will be a way of engaging the youth of our community, and bringing artists out of the woodwork by providing a space where people can learn and come together,” Kirra says.

The gallery will also be host to workshops and community events, sell art supplies and hold regular exhibitions – the first of which is currently displaying until November 9, 2019.

Introducing Miiesha, local singersongwriter from Woorabinda, who’s hit the ground running with her first single, ‘Black Privilege’. Named as Apple Music’s Best New Artist – Miiesha is making waves!

A

s a young artist of 20 years of age, Miiesha brings a lyrical beauty and wisdom far beyond her years. Bringing to light the cultural experiences she’s had growing up in Central Queensland, Miiesha doesn’t shy away from getting real in her message. This ability to highlight the raw nature of societal and cultural issues creates a beautiful vulnerability and strength in her music and is also a way of celebrating and sharing her culture and community.

I like to carry my culture wherever I go; carry my people, my community. It’s very important, spiritually,” “I was collaborating musically with a friend and he started sending my stuff off to producers and then people started booking me for events and it just took off from there.” Miiesha also recently appeared at BigSound Festival in Brisbane and has even toured with the likes of Thelma Plum and Baker Boy. “It’s a great experience and a really exciting time for me.”

Inspired by gospel and soul influences, she combines this RnB sound with inclusions of her own language, adding an emboldened element into her song writing.

Behind the

Phantom of the Opera set to Haunt Rocky Theatre. A first-time performance of The Phantom of the Opera is set to grace the Pilbeam stage this November, with rehearsals already well underway. With a stellar cast and production team on deck, the memory of the Phantom is sure to linger well after the curtains close.

and many of whom have even grown up in the Union.

“There is a particular set of skills required for this play – musically, vocally, costumes, the set – everything. We also have to retrain our choir with operatic preparations for vocal support.”

The Phantom of the Opera has been dramatically played out across thousands of stages in front of millions for over thirty years since the first broadway show, and has become one of the most successful franchises of all time (yes, even surpassing Titanic).

Phantom will be something to be seen and amazed by.”

Having mainly been performed in capital cities, this will be the first performance of its kind in Central Queensland, produced by the renowned Rockhampton Musical Union, adding this bill to their stellar list of previous productions.

Lachlan Scheuber, an RMU prodigy, who has extensive experience here at home as well as in London, will play the enviable position of the Phantom of the Opera. Having performed a major role in Les Miserables, Lachlan is no stranger to the extravagance and challenges of a major production.

Patricia Mckenna, the show’s producer, says that rehearsals have started and are going along wonderfully already, due to their impressive cast list and production team. The production team ranges from choreographers, musical directors, stage managers, costume team, set designers, the director and producer, to stagehands - and all departments are in full swing planning and preparing. The cast has been uniquely curated and handpicked, including home-grown talent with international experience and qualifications under their belts, 016 / My Rockhampton

“It so wonderful that we’ve had our Rocky born and raised performers come home with all of their experience from overseas,” Patricia says.

Francesca Higgins, playing the role of Christine Daae, shares a similar story to that of Lachlan’s, having performed extensively in RMU and local productions, and brings with her music theatre qualifications from Sydney. “We’re very lucky to have such a talented company of performers who have a brilliant set of skills that will really just make this show spectacular,” Patricia says. Patricia recognises that with the magnitude of the play it will be a major undertaking, but she is confident that they’ll be able to carry it off impressively. “We have two directors for this play, and some insider knowledge to be able to pull off all the little secrets involved with making the show really special.” Grant Whitfield, co-director to Joy Philippi, has worked on and performed in numerous Phantom productions previously, and brings invaluable knowledge to the set. Also sure to excite die-hard fans, set designer Ross James has even been able to secure items from a major previous Phantom production, excitingly including the famous chandelier. As an Andrew Lloyd Webber composed play, the orchestra will be the biggest one yet with over thirty-five musicians. The choreography element also requires a special set of skills and training, as all of the dances are ballet influenced.

Rocky’s History of Horse Racing

H

orses were a large part of early settler life in Rockhampton before the existence of the motorised vehicle, so it’s no surprise that competition racing sprang up. The extravagant events of today really just began as a race between two mates. This friendly bet drew attention from the town, not long turning into town-sponsored events until the first jockey club began in 1863, named the Fitzroy Jockey Club. Membership subscription was priced at just 5 guineas and racing fever set in. In the lead up to the club’s formation, there were plenty of town-sponsored races with townappointed men as race stewards.

018 / My Rockhampton

The first horse race of notable mention set off in 1856 at a dried out lagoon in Gracemere.

Take a walk with us down memory lane as we take a look at the origins of Rockhampton’s first outdoor sport, horse racing. There’s a rich history behind the sport that’s almost synonymous with the town’s legacy.

Mount Morgan Australian Natives Association Jockey Club at the local racecourse 1902.

In 1862 an application was made to the Government for a piece of land to suitably use as a racecourse, and approval was granted for 800 acres of land four miles out of Rockhampton near what was known as the Nine-Mile Waterhole. The first major racing event was held there in September of the same year at no cost to race goers.

Visiting American airman, Mr A B Stone and his Bleriot monoplane, Callaghan Park 1912.

There was even a Race Ball to kick things off, with tickets selling for $2. Men were to be the sole purchasers of the tickets but were able to bring as many lady guests as they desired at no extra cost (which soon became an unviable option for the sustainability of the club, which fell apart within a year of its opening).

Spring 2019 / 019

People would ride home from the ball on horseback, with a historical recount saying, “the reckless riding home sure was a sight to see. The Northern Queensland Jockey Club was then started in 1866, which was just as short-lived as the first club, until the Rockhampton Jockey Club was established in 1868 and still exists today. This club was host to the first Rockhampton Cup in 1918, with fifteen stunning runners set to race before around five thousand spectators for the prize of 500 pounds. Rolad was the winning horse of this historic race, stride to stride against Rusco who came a close second. The popularity of such events today harks back to these early days, with horse racing as part of our national identity.

Callaghan Park today hosts an array of events to horse around at, from racing season soirees and pop-up polo, to weddings, formals and has even featured the odd aeroplane or two! In 1912, American airman A.B. Stone flew his plane in a race against S. Taylor in an automobile! The plane lapped the car on the fifth lap but crash-landed on the straight, with airman Stone luckily surviving the mishap, and the winnings going to Mr Taylor. We still often see a similar spectacle at the racecourse today with our Defence Force often making spectacular fly-overs.

The Spring Racing Carnival season is here, featuring race events such as Ladies Oaks Day, St Peter’s Caulfield Cup and of course the Melbourne Cup. GET YOUR TICKETS AT callaghanpark.com.au

The infamous Callaghan Park was named after Dr William Callaghan – the longestserving member of the Rockhampton Jockey Club who held many significant roles such as President and Vice President during his time in the Club. Sadly he never lived to see the first race held at his namesake racecourse, but his memory and legacy lives on here in Rockhampton, with the Callaghan motto being ‘Faithful and Brave’. With Spring Racing Carnival season right around the corner, host to races such as the Caulfield and Melbourne Cup, the horseracing legacy continues to live on here in Rockhampton and remains at the forefront of many major events. We also can’t forget that racing events today are quite the stylish affair with Fashions on the Field entrants donning their elegant attire in men’s and women’s categories. From its early beginnings to the now-lavish social events that racing has become, Callaghan Park sees thousands of spectators on the grounds each year.

A new sporting activity is blasting its way through Rocky and taking aim to be one of the top adventure sports for adrenaline lovers and arms enthusiasts alike.

Opening in the CBD at the start of the year, CQ Blasters have gained more and more popularity since their beginnings as a home-based business selling online. As traction and popularity grew, they began importing blasters and found the next step was to open a store. Originating in Gladstone, they made the move to open a store in Rockhampton and haven’t looked back since. “We’ve really got a huge following now, and our store is always busy.” People soon began asking where they can play, and so began the idea of starting up combatsimulated field games. Appealing to people of all ages and fitness levels, Damien says it’s great to see people having fun and exercising at the same time. “You don’t have to be fit – some people start off just walking around and taking aim behind obstacles, and before they know it they’re running around.” “It’s really all about having fun – it’s been great to see fathers and sons out there together, and families just having a great time.”

Rocky faves Silky Fuzz and The Short Fall have been on the bill, with Stephen having even secured acts from around Queensland including the likes of Jackson Dunn and Olivia Ruth Band.

Viva Rock Vegas was a big one for us and it’s unique – a casino-style experience in a rustic environment. It’s a really versatile space.” Look out for other exciting events to come, including a photography exhibition on all of the musicians that have come through to play.

The Capricorn Food & Wine Festival returns for another year of culinary excellence and fine wine. Set along the beautiful banks of the Fitzroy River and against the backdrop of Rockhampton’s iconic heritage buildings, the Capricorn Food and Wine Festival returns for their annual sip and sup soirée, showcasing the best local produce from around our region.

From chef to table, vineyard to glass, farm to plate, the Capricorn Food and Wine Festival is our culinary event of the year. The festival will host guest chefs as well as local talent borne out of our own burgeoning hospitality scene, who will be featured at the free ‘Chef’s Table’ events where tips, tricks and tantalising food will be shared. “We have a few other exciting additions along with our usual signature events,

including master classes with chef Shane Bailey of the Boathouse in Noosa and Beef Australia. He’s also had 12 years involvement with the Noosa Food and Wine Festival, so he’ll be one to watch,” says festival producer Rhiannan Rochford. Proudly featuring local produce will be pop-up kitchens serving signature dishes that you’ll be able to pair with the variety of wines and beverages on offer. “As for the wine tastings, we will have over 100 different wines from all over Australia available to taste.” “In addition to our culinary focus will be the live music. One event in particular that we’re introducing this year is called Rockin’ Reds presented by Triple M, which will be inclusive in the festival passes.” An event you won’t want to miss tickets for will be the CFWF Launch Party featuring signature cocktails from our very own Saleyards Distillery, and nibblies prepared by event fave Shane Bailey.

What you need to know about the Queensland Government's waste levy. Up until July this year, Queensland was the only mainland state without a waste levy, and in addition to 55% of our own waste ending up in landfill, other states were also transporting their waste to Queensland for disposal.

to reduce waste and minimise your charges, such as accepting a recycle service. If you are a waste contractor, your customers need to be made aware of the introduction of the waste levy and also encouraged to separate recoverable material where possible to save on waste charges.

This means that from 1 July a charge of $75 per tonne will apply to some waste being disposed at landfill. But the good news is that the State Government is covering the levy for household and selfhaul waste, so ratepayers won't face any additional costs. New Waste Transfer Stations for rural residents Waste disposal and recycling is set to become a whole lot easier for rural residents thanks to a new Waste Transfer Station (WTS) that Council is currently building in Bushley. The new WTS comes as a result of the closure of roadside bin stations and will service residents from Stanwell to Gogango once it opens later this year on Sandy Creek Road. Residents will be able to dispose of separated recyclable materials for free, just like at our other transfer stations around the Rockhampton Region. The WTS will also offer the drumMUSTER chemical container recycling program. This means that residents will be able to drop off eligible agvet chemical containers for free. The collected containers will then be recycled into useful items such as street signs, irrigation piping, plant stakes and outdoor furniture. Currently, the only other WTS to offer this service in the region is at Gracemere. The current interim waste collection service will continue while construction is underway, and the final service will take place the day after the WTS opens. The new transfer station is part of Council's commitment to providing rural communities with reliable and safe waste and recycling services. It will be the second rural waste transfer station to open this year following the new Bajool WTS that services Bajool, Upper Ulam and Marmor areas.
