Hot Rods in the heart of the CBD

Gear up for the car enthusiast event set to heat up the city! Ready to ‘Show and Shine’ at Rockhampton’s newest event, Rockynats 2020.

I

magine a time machine back to the days of sunset cruises on Route 66, the LA sun on your skin, burning rubber, glinting chrome, the wind through your hair. It’s the 1950s and the racing flags have been waved. Come one come all it’s the hot rod event of the season like you’ve never seen before. It’s an event the guys from local club, Highway 66 Rodders, are gearing up for.

“It’s really exciting for us to have an event like this here in Rocky,” says George Wallace, Camp Out Coordinator for the club. “We used to have regular motor shows and the classic car club still has a few events, but since those days we haven’t had many events where we’ll be able to really come together like we will at Rockynats.” It’s more than simply about the cars for these guys. It’s about community, bringing people together, and bringing joy to others. Really, they’re big softies at heart. >> 04 / My Rockhampton

“It’s really special you know, seeing people of all ages really enjoying seeing these cars,” says Craig Hill, local club member. “It’s like a time machine back to another era and for some, like nothing they’ve ever seen before.”

“We have everyone from young kids to the elderly just beaming when they see the cars come through.” Often raising money for local organisations, it’s about helping out wherever they can. “We’re big believers and advocators for the community, it’s about giving back,” George says. Their monthly hot rod runs along the coastline and through parts of Central Queensland are favourites of club members and the public alike.

“It’s a real treat for people to see us cruising by and it really becomes a great social outing,” says Craig. It’s a little bit rock n roll, a little bit classy, and a whole lot of awesome. Showcasing Chevrolets and classic Fords, to custom cars, these street machines are reminiscent treasures of days gone by. Recently the Highway 66 Rodders visited Benevolent Living, lighting up the aged care facility and taking them back to their childhoods, of days with a packed cut lunch on the way to the beach on a Sunday afternoon in their classic Ford. Rockynats is looking like it will be a massive event with friends of the Highway 66 Rodders already making plans to travel across Australia for the national event here. 06 / My Rockhampton

“It will be great at an event like this coming up where we’ll be able to meet up with old friends from afar and make new friends as well,” says Craig. The ‘Show and Shine and Street Cruise’ events where these hot rods will be showcased during Rockynats is set to bring added variety to the event, appealing to people of all ages and backgrounds, as well as die hard car enthusiasts. There is talk that nominations to enter cars are already over 500.

In the

Know

The quirky, the artistic and the delicious - a collection of arty things to see and enjoy from local insider and artist Erin Dunne. @erindunne_artist @erindunnevisualartist

Soak up the sun in an outdoor Art Gallery I love just meandering along the revitalised riverfront soaking up the morning sun and taking in the view of the spectactular Fitzroy River (known as Toonooba in Darumbal language). Along the way there is plenty of public artworks to enjoy from local artists which is the perfect way to fill in your morning. As you stroll, it’s also nice to take in the character-filled heritage buildings - I found these so inspiring that I’ve drawn Customs House and Avonleigh for previous exhibitions. For those of you with kids, there are plenty of places for them to play too which is always a bonus.

Coffee + Cake

What’s better than a bit of coffee and cake with friends to start your morning? Riverston Tea Rooms is my go-to for some of the best cakes, slices and baked treats that are homemade daily, just like Grandma used to. My favourite is a slice of light, spongey Tiramisu cake which pairs perfectly with a barista-made coffee or a pot of tea from their speciality tea selection. You can enjoy one of the breezy outside tables with a view of the river and Quay Street, an ideal vantage point for one of my favourite activities as an artist: people watching. Before you leave, be sure to ask Maria or Jim to show you some of their range of antique jewellery and treasures from House of Treasures - you never know what unique piece you might find!

Walter Reid Cultural Centre Another favourite of mine is the Walter Reid Cultural Centre which is a vibrant community space and artistic hub. It is home to a range of creative collectives including Capricornia Printmakers, CQ Contemporary Artists, CQ Photographers, CQ Potters, and Officina Athelstane Letterpress, amongst others. It’s a perfect place to find high quality contemporary artworks to suit a range of tastes and budgets, as well as letterpress cards, posters and artworks produced by Derek Lamb on the 1887 Alexandra press. Keep an eye out for exhibitions by these artistic groups - these are always a good way to keep your finger on the artistic pulse of CQ. Summer 2019 - 2020 / 09

Dining t s a f k Brea Breakfast out is one of the best ways to start your day and with the range of cafe options we have here in Rocky, we’re spoilt for choice. Central Queensland Comedy Food Critic, Fork You Later, reviews two of Rockhampton’s favourite breakfast dining locations. Follow him at @cqfoodrater on Facebook

Regent Hotel

I called for Jeeves to bring the car around as I was famished and the maid and cook were on holidays - The Regent was our destination because only the fanciest of establishments is where I dine.... well not really but when I was given the assignment of reviewing “The Regent” I thought I better get into character, being one of Rockhampton’s oldest buildings The Regent has the charm and architecture you would expect in the big city, breathtaking hallways and an entrance that reminds you of an Australia young and looking to impress; the dining room was updated but still held that elegant charm. Now seeing as I’m a fan of smashed avo I set them a challenge to impress me and they did not disappoint; being my signature review dish I wasn’t easy to please but the fresh ingredients and great service won me over, combined with a great coffee and reasonable price I highly recommend this hidden Rocky gem - 9 out of 10 butlers. Location: 192 Bolsover St, South Rockhampton

Coffee and Chrome Cafe

We got our motors running and headed out to the Harley Davidson Cafe - Coffee and Chrome for a motor revenge breakfast. As soon as you walk in your jaw drops as the entire cafe is surrounded by some of the most beautiful Harley Davidson’s on the planet. To go with that view is a fresh made delicious breakfast served with a smile; we had the smashed avacado on sourdough toast and it did not disappoint this millennial. The hardest part about eating there is not buying a Harley for the ride home 8 out of 10 hungry bikies. Location: 125 William St, South Rockhampton 010 / My Rockhampton

More to explore Cafe Lé Ma Cafe Le Ma is another quaint little option for a cosy morning’s caffeination session. Situated in a convenient location at Red Hill opposite the post office, you can easily have your breakfast alfresco style before attending to all the days errands and business. Eggs benny and Toby’s Estate coffee before mail day - yes please! With a small, dedicated team they are focused on providing great customer service, and even have a few great options for those with particular dietary requirements. Locations: 414 Yaamba Rd, Shop 16 Red Hill Homemaker Centre, North Rockhampton

How ‘bout breaky on the go? Birdies Espresso

Try - a unique little outdoor cafe, with specialty coffee and light breakfasts perfect for a quick stop-by as you start your day. Proudly using free range eggs and eco-friendly packaging, cups and cutlery, Birdies Espresso is passionate about offering a greener solution. Located in a beautiful little courtyard

Bella Via Cafe

Family-owned and run, Bella Via offers a quaint, relaxed friendly atmosphere with alfresco as well as cosy indoor dining. It’s perfect for that quick pick me up in the morning with chef-cooked bacon and eggs or even as a fast takeaway option. Also on offer here is a completely vegan menu, as well as delicious gluten and dairy-free options without compromising on flavour. It offers a personalised experience where the chef will often bring your meal to you, really making you feel at home as a valued customer. With the barista always at the ready in their attention to detail, their coffee is a must have. Location: 376 Dean St, Frenchville

on Denham Street under fruit trees and gardens, you’ll probably be tempted to stay a while.

NewsXpress Mt Morgan is that perfect option for when you’re on the road and on the go. There’s nothing quite like stopping in at a quaint little cafe for a caffeine pick-me-up and a sweet treat or sandwich. Served with the friendly local hospitality that we know and love in Mount Morgan, the coffee is highly-rated and highly-sought after with the Saturday line-up often out the door! You can even snag a souveneir on your way through from their gift shop to serve as a sweet little memento of your trip!

Oh My, Mamma Mia! Masks on, masks off! Meet some of the fabulous ladies behind the hit production Mamma Mia. Just like the story goes, there’s nothing like putting a face to the name!

A

s auditions and rehearsals draw near for the smash hit production Mamma Mia, we thought we’d sneak a peek into the tales behind some of the leading ladies and show stoppers - the ones who without, the show would not go on! Just like it takes a village to raise a child, (or three mystery men to cause a stir on a tiny Greek Island), so too does it take an army of talented, creative women to put on a spectacular show. How do you get those moves? Lita Hegvold is the mastermind behind the choreography. Injecting that fun zest for life that the dances have in the show, Jacinta draws on her twentysix years of dance experience when she ran her own dancing company. She’s the proud owner of many awards from her stunning pieces choreographed for the Dance and Theatre program at Rockhampton Girls Grammar School where she continues to push the envelope and create more and more

012 / My Rockhampton

new performance routines. Lita has worked with the Rockhampton Musical Union too as far back as 1988 and is glad to once again be working with the union again to add her unique spin on the show. Not putting a note wrong comes Jeanne Douglas as Musical Director. After a round of spectacular shows she’s worked on, from Kinky Boots, We Will Rock You and Shrek, Jeanne once again brings her thirty years experience to the fore. Her stellar career in

Warm up your vocals! Jacinta Delalande comes to us as Choral Director, bringing with her firsthand experience performing in a vast bill of shows like Dusty, Chicago and Jesus Christ Superstar. Her twenty-year background as an orchestral instrumentalist combined with her vocal talent provides the perfect concoction of skill to the team. Also Musical Director for Shrek and The Phantom of the Opera, Jacinta definitely has the CV to fit the bill. Get ready for sing-a-long choruses and tunes of vocal delight!

conducting and instrumental teaching allows her to be the master of her own orchestra as she now works as a freelance conductor, adjudicator and band clinician around Queensland. From the funky upbeat tunes to those emotional ballads of Mamma Mia, Jeanne has got it covered. Without a pin out of place we introduce Sue Earle as the Costume Coordinator. If you’ve heard the tale of ‘The Sequin Sisters’ you’ll know Sue knows a thing or two about a thing or two. The Sequin Sisters are a costume designer group which Sue spearheads, after her talents were discovered way back when she was designing costumes for her daughter’s dance shows. Eleven years on and no signs of slowing down, Sue has been Wardrobe Supervisor for the Musical Union and has been working on Council productions since 2011. Adding Mamma Mia’s flurry of fabulous frocks to her belt will be no small feat but no challenge for Sue.

Three, two, one and action! The clapperboard has snapped and entering stage right is Joy Phillipi, the show’s ring leader and Director. Joy has worked her magic on a number of productions in the past as stage manager, and this time she’s looking forward to directing what she says will be “a great local production”. Full of energy and buzzing with excitement Joy says “I’m so excited for the fun! I think it’s going to be a really fun show.” “I’m a child of my age and so ABBA is just so cool - for fans old and young, ABBA never goes out of fashion. The music is going to be one of the big key things in this show and I can just see everyone joining in and singing along, don’t you?” Yes, Joy, we do! And we think right here we’ve found the real ‘Dancing Queens’.

1. Cedric Archer Park

Time to get wet and wild! Tucked away in Gracemere is a colourful water playground at its finest. There are larger than life buckets to splash under, soft fall areas to run and play safely, spray tunnels to run through and shaded eating areas for picnics. Even if you don’t fancy getting wet you can still stay cool under the shade with your regular adventure playgrounds. Get set to make this your go-to splash for the summer.

2. Water Play Park at the Southside Pool Get ready for big fun! The Water Play Park is the ultimate place for staying cool and having fun this summer. Often fit out with inflatables and of course the classic water buckets, it’s a kids water wonderland dream! Don’t worry adults there’s plenty for you too - there’s a cafe and sun lounges surrounded by landscaped gardens so you can kick back and relax while the kids play. There are also lots of shaded eating areas - if you can manage to coax those littles ones out of the water! 016 / My Rockhampton

3. Kershaw Gardens The Kershaw Gardens offer another great option for family fun and staying cool. It boasts plenty of shaded areas, covered eating areas, an adventure playground as well as - you guessed it - a fantastic water play area. You can take a stroll through the beautiful gardens, snap a picture in front of the waterfall and chill out for the afternoon - perfect.

4. Waterskiing on the Fitzroy The mighty Fitzroy! From fishing, to boating, or just taking in the view from the banks, there’s plenty to enjoy about our iconic river. And with waterskiing as another option, there’s more we can add to the list! Further upstream are our famous Ski Gardens. Lined with eucalyptus trees and water seeming to stretch for miles, the Ski Gardens make for a beautiful water playground. If you’re armed at the ready with a speed boat and skis, well you’re set! Otherwise you can also receive lessons if you’re just beginning. For those with the gear you can look forward to the Slalom Tournament held in December, hosted by Waterski QLD (Central Region). A display of mastery and skill, it will also be quite the event to spectate. It’s also a great spot for picnics - with barbecues, shaded areas and a playground, why not enjoy a picnic day out against the beautiful backdrop of the Fitzroy. Summer 2019 - 2020 / 017

A Historic Birthday Bash! Picnic baskets and punch at the ready - we’re about to celebrate a part of our town’s history and botanic beauty as the Botanic Gardens turns 150!

P

icture a black and white slide screen of flickering images of families frolicking by the water and kids with popsicles at the sandy town lagoon with its very own diving pontoon, surrounded by lush gardens and greenery. That was the Botanic Gardens in the late 1800s where the Murray Lagoon was Rockhampton’s very first bathing spot. Now 150 years on since being gazetted as public gardens in 1869, the Rockhampton Botanic Gardens still remains the iconic place of family fun and true appreciation of nature. Initially curated by James Scott Edgar of the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew, the first ten acres of the now 40 hectare marvel had humble yet bold beginnings. Featuring exotic plant species as well as native plants and trees, the gardens are a real landscape of

018 / My Rockhampton

some of the world’s most spectacular flora. It is also thought that local botanist Anthelme Thozet was integral in selecting the Spencer Street site, bordered by the Murray and Yeppen-Yeppen Lagoons. With her and Edgar’s botanic knowledge combined, the legacy began. Edgar lived onsite in a modified dairy shed in 1873 as caretaker and curator, with five other curators following on from him after his time. They each strived to maintain their predecessor’s work, adding to what they had established to continue the legacy, in turn creating the beautiful paradise landscape we enjoy today. It is now a beautiful retreat where natural and man-made environments intertwine with cobblestone pathways, Japanese gardens, manicured shrubbery and jungle replicas,

areas of forestry, as well as the arid desert gardens. There’s an almost unending list of ways to spend your time here - lazy Sunday afternoons in the sun on a picnic blanket, bridal showers on the lawn, casual strolls, a gentle bike ride or run along the paths along the lagoon, weddings by the water, the Saturday Park Runs, throwing a football on the grassy hills - take your pick! It’s easy to see how the gardens have become a cultural, recreational, and educational hub of the city. You can even take educational tours to learn about all of the species of flora and fauna. You would never have guessed it either but the kiosk, known as the Gardens Tearooms, was opened back in 1912 on New Years Day. It’s amazing to wonder at how many milkshakes have been served over that time! Adding to the gardens history is its heritagelisting in 1999. Also a gathering place to memorialise and honour our soldiers, the cenotaph stands at the epicentre as host to many Anzac Day dawn services over the years. Now we can’t forget the zoo. Who doesn’t want an excuse to visit the animals - with exotic and native species, a baby chimp and a new one on the way! The cherry on top is free entry! Don’t miss out on feeding time, where you can get an up close look at how the animals interact and engage with each other and their handlers. Get set for a birthday celebration of 150 year magnitude on Saturday, January 18th from 4:30pm - 8:30pm with food and exciting entertainment. With a ‘Picnic in the Garden’ theme it’s the party where everyone’s invited!

Summer 2019 - 2020 / 019

Exploring your own

Backyard

There’s nothing like a good time that doesn’t cost a dime, and there’s plenty to explore around town without having to crack open your wallet.

The Botanic Gardens & Zoo

Coming into its 150th year, it’s quite a historic time for the Rockhampton Botanic Gardens. Stroll through the pristine parklands and exotic gardens, pack a picnic, or bring a footy to throw around with mates. There’s playgrounds for the kids and of course the zoo with its native and exotic animals and birdlife.

Fishing the Fitzroy

Throw a line in and catch a barra from the river. No boat, no worries - there’s a jetty area that you can fish from making it safe for keen fishermen and children alike. It’s a splendid way to wile away the afternoon as the sun sets and the evening cools down, the buzz of cicadas in the air letting you know summer has well and truly arrived.

020 / My Rockhampton

Mt Archer

See the city from new heights at Mt Archer’s renovated boardwalk lookout. Set against a sunset backdrop, or by the twinkle of starlight, the view is a sight to behold. There are also adventure obstacle play areas for the kids and plenty of wide open green spaces for picnics. Along with the lookout circuit is another walking track that takes you to the Eastern view, where you can catch glimpses of the coastline beyond the rolling mountains.

The Kershaw Gardens

Located on the Northside of town are the Kershaw Gardens, with native plants and trees to discover as you stroll along the paved pathways. There’s the newly-built playgrounds and eating areas perfect for family picnics and the beautiful, iconic waterfall that flows all-year round.

The Art Gallery

Renowned as one of the most significant galleries in regional Australia, the Rockhampton Art Gallery’s expertly curated collection is a must view. Boasting iconic Australian works from the likes of Sidney Nolan and international works from the UK and Japan, the collection has seen itself at the forefront of the art scene.

CBD Heritage Walk

Here in Rockhampton we are proud to have the longest strip of heritage listed buildings in Australia. Take a walk along the sandstone cobbled street and take in the sights of a truly iconic piece of Australia’s history. Going back to our origins of the Mount Morgan mining boom that saw our town put on the map and established, it harks back to another era. You might even spot the horse-drawn carriage with Kenny the Clydesdale if you’re lucky.

Suburban Parks

There are playgrounds and parks dotted around most suburbs, which is a great option for a short stroll away from home. Perfect for a packed lunch under the trees and a kick of the soccer ball.

Bull Statue Tour

Pack the car with some snacks and some friends and see if you can spot all of the bull statues dotted throughout town. Don’t forget to take a snap of them all! It makes for a great keepsake and fun Rocky memory. Summer 2019 - 2020 / 021

Talent Unearthed Introducing local sports superstar, Tamika Upton, who has just finished her break-out season in the NRLW. Known by many around town as an Australian Touch Football legend, Tamika has recently shown us what she can do on an NRL field aswell.

Tamika

A

s a young girl Tamika always had a passion for all things sport and was very driven to be the best player she could be. Building a strong reputation on the touch field, Tamika has donned the green and gold to represent Australia so many times you need more than two hands to count. Opting for something a little different, this year has seen Tamika change codes to Rugby League. As a true believer and advocate for promoting women in sport, Tamika says “It is great to see Rugby League driving change and recognising that womens sport is just as good to watch.”

m my time I’ve learnt so mucht fro st I ill have so at the Broncos buwan t to be the I much to learn. n be.” best I ca Playing alongside some fellow Central Queensland products in Chelsea Baker and Mariah Storch, Tamika and the Broncos were unstoppable all season. Progressing through the season with only one loss and taking down the St George Illawarra Dragons in the NRLW grand final at ANZ Stadium, the Brisbane Broncos are definitely a force to be reckoned with. Making a name for herself after not putting a foot wrong this season and securing two man of the match performances, Tamika says, “I’ve learnt so much from my time at the Broncos and can’t wait to come back bigger and better next year.”

With only one season of Rugby League under her belt, to be hand picked to play at a higher level and run out for the Brisbane Broncos in the NRLW is such a great achievement. Playing five-eighth for Yeppoon Seagulls, Tamika was absolutely an asset to their team and with a killer pass on her, there is no wonder the Broncos were so excited with their new recruit.

After such a remarkable performance in the NRLW season, Tamika was also named in the Australian Women’s 9s Squad to play at the World Cup in October.

Mount Morgan Tree Festival 6 December 2019, 5pm - 9.30pm Morgan St, Mount Morgan

A near 20-year long tradition sees the annual Christmas Tree festival set to light the town of Mount Morgan once again. The idea first caught the attention of Mrs Margaret Kearney who heard about a dazzling Christmas tree festival in the town of Longreach, thought up by Allan Lamb, the Anglican Church’s priest at the time. Mrs Kearney took the idea to the local St Mary’s Parish Council who approved the concept to help bring a little Christmas spirit to the town. Bursting at the seams with almost 200 trees in 2012, the event soon had to be moved from the Parish to the Mount Morgan School of Arts. It’s an event that has been bringing the community together for decades, and is a truly treasured time for locals and a bright new experience for visitors. With markets and food stalls, entertainment, rides, a visit from Santa, along with the display of handmade glittery tress of tinsel delight, this event is a real Christmas party.

Our Touch of A

Paradise

meandering lagoon, winding pathways, and a spectacular new bridge have added to the multimillion dollar transformation of the lagoon at Gracemere’s Cedric Archer Park!

And while this piece of paradise is ready to be enjoyed, finishing touches will be complete in the New Year with extensive landscaping works, street furniture and seating surrounding the lagoon.

Known as Touch of Paradise, the lagoon was originally constructed in 1998 as an employment project, though lost its allure over the years. Council has been breathing new life into the site of late to provide a recreational and natural attraction in the heart of Gracemere.

The journey to transform Cedric Archer Park began in 2015 with the construction of an exciting new shaded soft fall playground with park shelters, electric BBQs and a new amenities block. The development of a skate park then gave even more reason for kids to enjoy the park and the opening of the colourful wet play area in 2017 was the icing on the cake.

To give Touch of Paradise a new lease of life, Council emptied the lagoon, removed aquatic weed and debris, reshaped the lagoon and installed a sediment basin, water aerator and new aquatic plants to improve the ecosystem. Two new bridges were also constructed including a 43 metre long bridge as well as pathways to create walking circuits around the entire lagoon.

034 / My Rockhampton

The $2.35 million play area has proven to be a winner with both children and families, and in addition Touch of Paradise has become the jewel in the crown. We must recognise that the water play area was funded by the State Government through the Works for Queensland programme. Thanks Barry!

The exciting news is that it doesn’t end there. The park’s footprint is still yet to expand with construction of a Pump Track expected to commence in early 2020. The Pump Track will be designed for nonmotorised bikes, scooters and skateboards with an asphalt looping trail system located adjacent to the Cedric Archer Park car park, running parallel to Fisher Street. The project is earmarked to be complete in the first half of the year. Collectively, these new additions have given families a new appreciation for Cedric Archer Park and with so much fun in one area you won’t want to leave this adventurous and tranquil part of Gracemere. It has truly become a place that defies definition, it is open to all, and it deserves its growing reputation as one of the most enticing spots for families in the region.
