The inimitable Edwin Macaree, with a passion for phrenology, Shakespeare and the stage, stormed Rockhampton in its early days, often cutting corners in his quest for power, wealth and status.

Being an author today means more than just writing books. To break through and be successful in the long term, authors must have sound business knowledge and excellent marketing skills. Aleesah is one of Australia’s most popular children’s authors. She’s also a qualified marketing professional, business owner, and author mentor. In this session, Aleesah outlines what authors need to do to establish their own business and unique brand. She’ll explain how to build an author platform, how to secure speaking gigs, how to network online and face-to-face, and how to stand out from the crowd.

READING

CLASSIC FEATURE TOLKIEN READING DAY Tolkien Reading Day is an annual event, launched by The Tolkien Society in 2003, that takes place on 25 March to encourage the reading of the works of J. R. R. Tolkien. Tell us which Tolkien book is your favourite by commenting on our Facebook post on March 25.

THE CATCHER IN THE RYE BY J.D. SALINGER The novel details two days in the life of 16-year-old Holden Caulfield after he has been expelled from prep school. Confused and disillusioned, Holden searches for truth and rails against the “phoniness” of the adult world. He ends up exhausted and emotionally unstable. The events are related after the fact.

TRY AN EBOOK Are you a fan of Borrowbox? These are just some of the many comments we receive about the eBooks and eAudiobooks available via Borrowbox. We were stuck in an airport while on holidays and I went straight to Borrowbox to kill some time. Best library resource ever!

BOOK TRIVIA

I enjoy listening to eAudiobooks while ironing.

- Published first in 1951 and Salinger's only novel

I’m a long distance truckie and love eAudiobooks. At the moment I’ve been enjoying the story My mother, the serial killer.

- Sells 250,000 copies each year - On the top 10 banned book list in America - The best-known event associated with The Catcher in the Rye is arguably Mark David Chapman's shooting of John Lennon. Chapman identified with the novel's narrator to the extent that he wanted to change his name to Holden Caulfield. On the night he shot Lennon, Chapman was found with a copy of the book in which he had written "This is my statement" and signed Holden's name.

Reading has been shown to put our brains into a pleasurable trance-like state, similar to meditation, and it brings the same health benefits of deep relaxation and inner calm. Regular readers sleep better, have lower stress levels, higher self-esteem, and lower rates of depression than non-readers. Celebrate International Day of Happiness on 20 March by reading! 21
