kids Meet a Sing and Play Parent Danielle and her baby Lachlan dropped into the Gracemere Library recently to join in an early literacy session. Danielle answered four questions about her library visit. Q. Why do you come to these sessions? A. Lachlan loves his stories and the storytime – plus the activities and songs that go with it. It’s a great opportunity for him to engage with children his own age.

Q. What did you learn? A. Probably how to engage with Lachlan a bit more. I’ve discovered that he likes singing and dancing!

Q. Your baby’s favourite book? A. Aaron Blabey’s Piranhas don’t eat bananas!

Q. Does your baby have a library card? A. Yes, he does.

Don’t forget that you are never too young to sign up for a library card. Children aged under 5 years of age receive a special First 5 Forever library bag with a t-shirt, DVD, picture book and other goodies. Join today!

history Your Voice: Rockhampton Stories We want to hear your stories of Rockhampton’s past as part of the Rockhampton Regional Libraries contribution to the Rockhampton River Festival in 2019. As the Festival’s theme is ‘The Voice’, the library will be inviting members of the public to bring a photograph to the Rockhampton History Centre in June where a short oral history will be recorded using the image as a conversation starter. A preservation station will be set up where a copy of the photograph will be digitised along with a record of the oral story attached to it. You will get to keep a digital copy of your personal photograph. The final part of the project will involve the creation of a digital montage of oral history audio, video and still images which will be screened as part of the Rockhampton River Festival. Book your appointment to have your voice and photo recorded at the Rockhampton History Centre, Southside Library from 3 June to 21 June. The ‘Your Voice: Rockhampton Stories’ photo and oral history digital montage will be screened at the Rockhampton River Festival from 12-14 July. Bookings on 4936 8043 or libraries@rrc.qld.gov.au

Childhood from Yesteryear As we celebrate both Heritage Month and Under 8’s Week in May, take a sneak peek at a few photographs from 70 years ago showing how young children were primped, posed and photographed for posterity in the Mercer Studio. Hundreds of families from the central Queensland area had photos taken by Mercer’s Studio during 1932 to 1995 with over 55,000 negatives currently held in the library’s Central Queensland collection. These images and more are available for reproduction at a small cost from the library’s Rockhampton History Centre.

Roald Dahl Storyboard Walk Roald Dahl was a master of telling stories for all ages and we want to celebrate his unique style of wordplay at the Rockhampton River Festival with a pop-up Roald Dahl Storyboard Walk temporarily installed on the grassy riverbank at Quay Street. As a special promotion for the inaugural CQ Readers’ and Writers Festival in September, Roald Dahl’s birthday on 13 September will be celebrated with a range of literary, food-based and creative activities at Rockhampton Regional Libraries. The Roald Dahl Storyboard Walk featuring pop-up narrative panels of Dahl’s wonderful stories will lead readers on a walk of discovery at the River Festival learning about the importance of early literacy. The boards will also promote and highlight the upcoming festival. Look out for the Roald Dahl Storyboards at other locations in 2019 after the River Festival! This project has received financial assistance from the Queensland Government through State Library of Queensland.
