youth A Quick Note from Cr Swadling Your libraries will be bustling with action leading up to, and including Christmas and the New Year holiday period, with events planned for International Day of People with a Disability (IDPwD), International Games Day, Remembrance Day and the December/January school holidays. A variety of free activities have been locked in for the last week in December, so keep this library booklet close at hand to check on programs and opening/closing times for the libraries. The libraries will be offering trips down memory lane in late December with some screening of home-grown movies from the CQ Collection guaranteed to spark reminiscences. The Silent Disco to celebrate IDPwD will be a first for the library in early December – with iZac, a humanoid NAO robot making some special appearances to chat and interact with library visitors of all ages. Teens will have the chance to ride a roller coaster or shoot some archery targets in a pop-up Virtual Reality zone in December. TOON cartoon workshops with Jett James Blurton will be heaps of fun at all libraries in January, with children encouraged to learn about getting ready for disasters with the Red Cross ‘Pillowcase Project’ in more action-packed workshops at all libraries. As I will be retiring early in 2020, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your family a happy Christmas and peaceful holiday. Remember to keep on reading and learning and using our wonderful libraries. Warm regards,

Cr Rose Swadling Communities Committee Chair

youth Tell Your bushfire Story Over the months of November and December and further into 2020, library staff will be out and about in different areas of Gracemere and further west, gathering and recording memories and stories of the recent bushfire event in VOX Pop settings. What’s a Vox Pop? ‘Vox Pop’ or ‘man on the street’ refers to short interviews with members of the public. We want to ensure that we ‘record resilient stories of today for the future’ as a response to the CQ Bushfires in Central Queensland in November 2018. These short digital recordings will be deposited into the library’s regionally significant Central Queensland collection at the Rockhampton History Centre, Southside Library and form an important social history and documentary record of this event. Watch out for a bold pop up banner with the phrase ‘Tell your Bushfire Story’ and a minidigital recording space manned by library staff at events and activities in your community. Register your interest with Gracemere Library staff by phoning 4631 5401.

history Wartime Films for Remembrance Day On Remembrance Day, there will be a free screening of vintage movies featuring WWII scenes from Australia and overseas, shot on 16mm and 8mm film during the war years, and sourced from the National Film and Sound Archives Australia. The original colour movies are part of the Kanopy suite available to stream online from the library catalogue with your library card and PIN. Fighting back While the fight for victory continues in Europe and the Pacific, the Anzac homefronts are preoccupied with their own problems: shortages, rationing and the arrival of the Americans on ‘R and R’. Thousands of women are now at work and children too are doing their bit, foraging for paper, tin and rubber. This episode in the Colour of War - the Anzacs series covers the years until the end of WWII including footage of secret mustard gas tests and survivors of Japanese POW camps and prison ships. Mon 11 Nov | 2.00pm – 2.45pm | Southside Library Film discussion | 2.45pm – 3.00pm

Children of the Empire For generations of New Zealanders and Australians, England has been the ‘Mother Country’. When Great Britain declares war on Germany in 1939, the Anzac nations follow. Dramatic colour footage in this episode captures the shocking reality of an escalating conflict, including the fight for Greece and Singapore, and the Battle of Midway. Among unexpected film gems in this episode from the Colour of War- the Anzacs series are private footage taken by Australian Prime Minister Robert Menzies on his visit to bomb-ravaged London, an extraordinary one-man campaign to film messages from families for the troops in Tobruk, and surprising coverage of a homemade Kiwi ‘tank’ constructed out of corrugated steel and a Caterpillar tractor. kids The Pillowcase Project The Pillowcase Project was originally inspired by events during Hurricane Katrina in the US. While evacuating campus, students of a local university used pillowcases to carry their cherished and basic possessions. After hearing this, Red Cross staff developed the concept of using a pillowcase as an emergency kit. The program quickly grew into a preparedness education program that has since become known as the Pillowcase Project. Delivered by Red Cross volunteers and staff, the workshop encourages children to be active participants in their own emergency preparedness. The content is non-hazard specific and includes activities to highlight the importance of being prepared and how to prepare both psychologically and practically for an emergency. Aimed at 8 - 10 year old students, the one hour workshop involves engaging discussions and interactive activities to help students: • Understand and discuss the importance of being prepared • Prepare their mind for the thoughts and feelings that may arise before, during and after an emergency • Know the difference between need and want items and what to pack in an emergency kit Each student is then given a pillowcase to decorate and take home, to start their own personal emergency kit.
