Illustrated

We talk to the anonymous Instagram sensation perfectly capturing the life and times of people in Central QLD with a daily illustration that is guaranteed to make you smile.

T

lhe land of CQ, where all the wild and wonderful wanderers become the iconic faces among the places we know and love. It almost stands to reason that they should be heralded in some way, so that in times to come, our legendary way of life can have its unique legacy stamped in history. With this being said, we’ll have you know that there is a sensation going around town, capturing the quintessential CQ scenes, known as CQ People Watcher.

04 / My Rockhampton

With little snapshots on Instagram, the paintings of CQ People Watcher have 100% nailed it. This genius, mystery creator filled us in on the inspiration and humble origins, and some of the wonderfully-wacky scenes they’ve been witness to amidst the everyday goings on of our region. Having drawn all their life with a passion for all things arty, it was a natural progression for CQ People Watcher to make their mark in such a unique, fun way. “It all started a few of years ago when I used to work as a receptionist where my desk had a full

view of the mall, and I’d sketch in pen and ink all the interesting things I’d see out the window.” “This town is full of so many amazing characters and stories and it would always make me smile to see some of these happenings during my work day.” “Beginning from sketching I’d go home and begin to paint, and then began adding layers and backgrounds when I got given an iPad and saw all the great ways you could create images on there.” When CQ People Watcher expanded their craft by adding in backgrounds, it was then that iconic places around town were featured such as the renowned Criterion Hotel, Stewarts and the Leichhardt Hotel. We asked what one of the funniest moments they’d been witness to and CQ People Watcher couldn’t help but giggle a little when recalling a time when they saw a man walking a dog sporting a hat and sunglasses. “If I can make other people smile by doing what I enjoy, then that’s a real bonus for me.”

CQ People Watcher is all about keeping it local and has thoughts of expanding into creating quirky greeting cards and maybe even a local gallery showing. Watch this space!

New Bub on the

Block

Rockhampton Zoo is excited to announce the birth and safe arrival of a newborn baby chimp!

T

he Rockhampton Zoo has come alive again in celebration at the safe arrival of a newborn baby chimp, delivered by mother Holly. With the chimpanzee enclosure initially being closed off for the troop to settle in and bond, the enclosure has reopened for visitors to come and view the little bundle of fur with his family. Much like with Capri, community response has been incredibly supportive and enthusiastic about the new arrival, and people are eager to visit. Half-brother to Capri, bub is progressing (and snuggling in) well. We all cannot wait to see the type of mischief these two will get up to when bub begins to grow and become more adventurous.

06 / My Rockhampton

Rockhampton Zoo is FREE and open everyday from 8am to 4.30pm (except Christmas Day).

Food Scene s ’ y k Roc Who doesn’t dig a good hot dog or enjoy a plate of seafood while soaking up waterfront views? Central Queensland Comedy Food Critic, Fork You Later, reviews two local dining locations plating up these crowd-pleaser favourites. Follow him at @cqfoodrater on Facebook

Port Scallywag

We decided to drop anchor at Port Scallywags this week to take a much needed rest from the ships galley, and our peg legs were not disappointed. Hidden inside the Rockhampton Boating Club is a fine seafood treasure chest, complete with a huge deck overlooking the mighty Fitzroy River that anyone would be proud to walk the plank on. I ordered the seafood platter and found the treasure island of fresh, perfectly cooked sea delights. Port Scallywag takes the trident for freshness and selection. Oysters, bugs, prawns, whiting, scallops - all fresh as a mermaid’s breath. Great service and price means that this place will be added to my culinary charts from now on for many more return voyages. 4 out of 5 tridents. Location: 375 Quay Street, Rockhampton City Facebook: @portscallywag

Diggery Dogs

Well cobbers, lately I’ve been hungrier than a dingo in a drought and looking for something different. I found this ripper of a place that’s a fusion of the good old USA hotdog with some down under delights that did not disappoint. I ordered a Breaky Dog and was happier than a man from Snowy River. It had egg on top then layers of bacon, fried onion, homemade beans, fresh tomato and chives and it had my tastebuds happier than a kangaroo at a kicking competition. Great location, clean, happy decor and great prices. 4 out of 5 Aussie Aussie Aussie’s. Location: 300 Bolsover Street, Rockhampton City Facebook: @diggerydogs

Exploring your own backyard:

n a g r o M t n u o M

There’s more to explore in your own backyard than you may have realised! Mount Morgan is a quaint country town nestling in the Dee Ranges, approximately 40 kms south-west of Rockhampton. This town helped to put Rockhampton on the map and there’s more hidden treasures than just gold.

Bakery

We’ve been told that nothing quite beats a hot, baked pie from the Mount Morgan Bakery, with travellers stopping in especially to buy one. For the sweet tooths, they sell the kind of apple turnovers you can only dream of.

Mafeking Bell No. 7 Dam

The iconic No. 7 Dam was built by the Mount Morgan Gold Mining Company in 1900. Today many enjoy it as the perfect spot to chill out and have a picnic barbeque, throw the football, lounge under the shade or enjoy a leisurely kayak across the Dam.

018 / My Rockhampton

Steeped in history on the main street of town, stands the Mafeking Bell. It was cast to celebrate the relief of the Mafeking (now Mahikeng, South Africa) siege finally ending during the Boer War. It originally stood outside the Council Chambers until 1962 when it was moved to the Boy Scouts, and eventually to the revitalised Morgan Street where it stands today. s cast in 1900 at QUICK FACT! It wamine and weighs the Mount Morgan grams! a whopping 570 kilo

Suspension Bridge

Ahoy there! The Suspension Bridge is a replica of the swing bridges over the Dee River in the mining days. Known as the Private Victor Stanley Jones Suspension Bridge, it’s named after the nation’s first military casualty and who was payclerk at the Mount Morgan Gold Mine. QUICK FACT! The first suspension bridge in the town was constructed in the 1890s!

Gold Mine

It’s the place that basically put Rockhampton on the map. With the Central Queensland gold rush of the mid-1800s, the gold mine brought people from near and far. In operation from 18821981, gold, silver, and copper was mined. Visit the nearby history museum where you can learn all about how the mine functioned in its hey-day.

Autumn 2020 / 019

Dinosaurs

Located on the northern corner of the mine site are the Fireclay Caverns. Excavated by pick and shovel by the miners in the early 1900’s for fireclay to make special heat resistant bricks to line the smelters on the site. What today is unique to the region, are hundreds of early Jurassic dinosaur imprints located in the caverns. Adding to the mystery the prints are situated in the caverns ceiling. Casts and information regarding the prints and a Plesiosaur fossil found on the minesite can be seen at Mount Morgan’s Historical Museum.

Railway

The gold rush brought a strong economy to the town, allowing industry and infrastructure to boom. The heritage-listed railway is a tribute to this from days gone by, with its architecture and museum rooms featuring all kinds of historic memorabilia. While at the Railway take time to view the 3D movie presentation on the Rack Railway…one of only two constructed in Australia.

No. 7 Gallery

Remember back to Issue 14 when we featured the newly-established No. 7 Gallery? The grand opening was a hit and community workshops have also been popular. If you haven’t been by yet, make sure you take a trip to view some of the local emerging and established artists’ work. 020 / My Rockhampton

Pubs

Everyone gets a little thirsty now and again, and there’s nothing like settling down with some good old-fashioned hospitality for the afternoon. Watch the sun sink below the horizon as you sink a few Northerns on the verandah of one of the town’s historic pubs!

Lookouts

See the sights from the Arthur Timms Lookout which provides a close panorama of the Mount Morgan Mine or the Frank Golding Lookout for a wider panorama of the mine and township.

Community Living There’s a real community spirit here in

Rockhampton which I really value. It inspires me to give back in any way that I can with donations to local charities like Anglicare, and with my touch football coaching at Emmaus College. I can’t wait for the basketball season to start up again as well - cheering on the Cyclones and Rockets is one of my favourite past times. As I am one of Rockhampton Basketball’s sponsors, it has a special place in my heart, and going to watch the games is always a great night out! My gym community at VidaFit is also another great support network - it’s all about the people you surround yourself with!

up in this beautiful town and I’ve really come to appreciate all that Rockhampton has to offer. My partner, Emily, and I love walking our dog along the Frenchville walking track, and I especially love walking along the Riverfront. With endless parks, gardens and the Mount Archer walking tracks, there’s so much opportunity to get outside and enjoy the great outdoors. Kershaw Gardens is another favourite of mine to walk through. It’s also the people I meet that makes getting about town so interesting too. Everyone is just so down-to-earth and genuine, never passing up an opportunity to say hello.

Wining and Dining When I go out to eat, I absolutely love choosing somewhere

along the river. The Boathouse is a particular favourite of mine and it’s always a treat to enjoy a nice cold beer there on a Sunday afternoon - the views are perfect. There’s an atmosphere around town that I love with all the cafes and restaurants, and the food is seriously like nothing else.

Secret Society Uncovered Secret squirrel Masonic Club turned to swinging soirée cafe & bar, Cocobrew.

T

he doors of the former secret society at the old Masonic Club have been swung open to reveal a completely refurbished, upmarket café and bar venue on the emerging swanky end of William Street.

“We wanted to keep the original feel of the place intact, so we’ve kept the original brick walls and the original flooring in the soon-tocome Whiskey Lounge,” says Robin Adams, owner.

Introducing Cocobrew. With a slogan of Eat, Drink, Laugh, Cocobrew is letting the good times roll.

“We actually found some old Mac’s beer bottles with the tops still on them that we’ve got on display in The Boardroom. There were even some old records of bookings into the club.”

As the perfect venue for functions, parties and high teas, Cocobrew have several sophisticated, themed areas and rooms for hire - The Boardroom, The Cellar Restaurant, The Conference Room, and The Whiskey Lounge. The building was previously known as the Rockhampton Masonic and Citizens Club since 1975, which has been largely dilapidated of late until its re-selling in September of 2019. With Masonic traditions steeped in mystery, it all adds an element of intrigue to the space.

022 / My Rockhampton

With an aim to continue the high-end market revitalisation that the William Street precinct is developing, Cocobrew is value-adding to a stylish CBD lifestyle. “We really want the people of CQ to enjoy what we’ve built. We wanted to offer an upmarket, stylish venue like what you would find in capital cities, and we’ve achieved that with our vibe and atmosphere,” Robin says.

“People can come enjoy a relaxed atmosphere with affordable prices in an upmarket venue.”

Robin also says that there will be seven boutique apartments to come mid-March, offering stylish living options for those seeking an inner CBD lifestyle.

Want to see for yourself? Cocobrew serves breaky, lunch, tapas and drinks seven days a week.

Green is the

New Black How to go green and be chic while you do it.

A

s our world is changing, we are learning to be more conscious of how we interact with our environments. It all sounds great to make changes for the betterment of our world, but you might be asking, “how doGREEN we go about IS THE NEW BLACK it and what businesses are out there implementing change that I can be involved in?” and it’s a good question. We’ve compiled a list of businesses and ideas for you to make your green footprint.

Reusable coffee cups This is one we are all probably most familiar with. Cafes are now advocating the use of reusable cups and even stocking them for purchase in-store, such as Gus’ Coffee, Dingles and Archer Brothers. Dingles sell beautiful pottery mugs that are the perfect chic green accessory by well-known Australian potter, @robertgordonpottery. Grocery Shopping Buying your groceries from local markets ensures you’re buying local and reducing waste, as most markets are packaging free. That Wholefood Place is also a great option for buying in bulk as well, where you can bring in your own containers to stock up on your various household cooking items. Local butchers also encourage bringing your own containers instead of having to use the single-use plastic bags.

Fashion Instead of fast fashion, how about opting for pre-loved? There are plenty of op-shops around town as well as community groups on Facebook selling pre-loved clothing items. Keep an eye out at local markets too. Not only is this reducing waste, it’s style with edge bringing back those vintage, retro vibes. These are just a few ideas and there’s plenty of other ways that we can all get involved! See our further tips and info on reusing and recycling here: www.rrc.qld.gov.au/goinggreen

Live like

locals do R

ockhampton is famous for a number of things. We’re the beef capital of Australia, we sit on the Tropic of Capricorn, home of the barramundi and the events capital of Central Queensland. Our Botanical Gardens recently celebrated its 150th Birthday and our Zoo just welcomed an additional member to their chimp family. We have the longest heritage listed street in Australia right in the heart of the city and a historical mining town just up the mountain. We have great steak, locally crafted beer and locally distilled award winning gin. Must we go on? But when was the last time you got out and explored and experienced the great things our region has on offer to visitors? To celebrate the launch of the new Explore Rockhampton website and the Stop. See. Stay campaign, we want our visitors to see our region as we do and live like the locals do when they’re here. So, we challenge you to explore your own backyard and tick off the top 10 things to do in our region before the end of the year.

034 / My Rockhampton

1. Grab a coffee

(or a wine) at the Boathouse or Riverston Tea Rooms, let the kids run through the water jets, check out the public street art and rediscover the CBD Riverfront precinct.

2. See a rodeo

at the Great Western Hotel on a Wednesday or Friday night.

3. Enjoy a scenic drive

up to the historic town of Mount Morgan and grab a mine workers pie before heading to the No. 7 Dam and Arthur Timms Lookout.

4. Pack your mountain bike

or a picnic and adventure atop Mount Archer and watch the sunrise or sunset from the Nurim Circuit elevated boardwalk.

5. Visit the Rocky Zoo

and Botanic Gardens and meet the new baby chimp, and over 60 other species of animals.

6. Book a tour

at the Capricorn Caves or revel in one of their biannual underground operas (next in town from the 29th to the 31st May)

7. Discover local heritage at the Dreamtime Cultural Centre.

8. Fish the Fitzroy

and catch a barra or a thready, or see the city from a different perspective and book a spot with River Cruises CQ.

9. Visit the Art Gallery

and check out Exposed, photo-media art captured by the Queensland Centre for Photography (until 19th April) and Reflected, a glass sculpture collection (until 30th April).

10. Taste a local drop

Tour Saleyards Distillery and try award winning gin, vodka and rum or visit Headricks microbrewery for their locally crafted beers.
