Changing Lives, One Scoop at a Time

For-profit businesses are often driven by the desire to provide a quality product. For nonprofits, serving those in the community is a common goal.

The Golden Scoop, a nonprofit ice cream shop in Overland Park, Kansas, that gives people with disabilities meaningful jobs, aims to deliver both.

The shop, which opened in April 2021, is the result of a partnership between Amber Schreiber, ’02, ’05 MBA, and her sister Lindsay Krumbholz, a behavioral therapist. Krumbholz approached Schreiber with the idea, pointing to statistics showing unemployment rates among individuals with disabilities as high as 80%. “I’m kicking myself that I didn’t major in accounting and finance,” she said. “I encourage everybody to take classes in finance and accounting, even if you’re not strong in math.”

At the end of the day, Schreiber said the success of The Golden Scoop can also be measured by the people with disabilities who work there.

“There is a lot of joy and happiness in that shop,” Schreiber said. “Everybody’s had an incredible experience where they feel accepted, and that was one of our biggest goals.”
