The Velvet Hands (Toby Mitchell, Dan Able, Sam Hilder and Louis Willbourne) blend slacker story telling and belting guitars reminiscent of The Strokes or contemporaties such as The Vacciines, with rousing punk choruses that recall The Clash. Onstage their raucous high energy live sets and swagger have seen the tussling front men, Able and Mitchell, likened to The Libertines. Live, as on record, The Velvet Hands embody the pure unbidled essence of rock n roll. Musically with their punchy, riff laden tracks but also in their abilit to encapsulate lyrically the feelings of their young generation. From the disillusion of punk opener, ‘Sick Of Living’ (“You’re 16 and your life is a sham, sick of living, yes I am”) to the universal tales and toxic relationsips and navigating romance with low self-esteem on ‘Games’ and ‘Only Blame Myself’, respectively, throgh to a slower, reflecting song of self-doubt and isolation, ‘Curtains Closed’. Contemplative song writing that belies the band’s young age. Still barely out of their teens, The Velvet Hands were born out of the NME coined ‘Kernow Wave’, Conrwall’s blistering garage-rock scene, and are now a focal point of of the nation’s mushrooming underground guitar scene. The band have spent the last 18 months releasing a string of successful DIY singles ‘Only Blame Myself’, ‘Games’, ‘Habit’, ‘Trains’, ‘I Don’t Mind’ and ‘Sick Of Living’, and now, ‘Just Give Me Some Time. Every single one with support from (among others) BBC Radio 1, BBC Introducing, 6 Music, Radio X (with Gordon Smart making ‘Only Blame Myself’ his Track Of The Day. The Velvet Hands have virtually released a Greatest Hits as a debut album. Appreciating the support, the band have been interviewed by Gary Crowley of BBC London, and most recently recored a live session for music guru John Kennedy of Radio X after playing his monthly Remedy Live Music Night. Influencer music blogs can be found dancing down the front at their shows, which are definitely about having fun. “they could have easily jumped out of the Cavern Club” (Indie Underground) “The second coming of rock and roll” (For The Love Of Bands). The Velvet Hands have supported Yak, Paves, Sisteray, LIINES and played landmark venues such as The Water Rats and the 100 Club. They have also played various festivals, including the BBC Introducing stage at Boardmaster. They play a free show at The Truskell Club in Paris on 27th April (“fast becoming the British rock n roll Embassy” – Music Tourist Board) before that, they support Shader at Jimmy’s in the Northern Quarter of Manchester on Record Store Day, invited back to This Feeling Club.
