Interview With Aldo Nova January 18, 2015 By Londa R. Marks | Interviews Published By Rock Legend News, Firenze, Italy and Tempi Dispari.it, Rome, Italy
Rock Legend News: You are are a multi-talented musician; a vocalist, guitarist, keyboardist and producer. What has been your approach to music? Aldo Nova: My approach to music has basically been to always do it with heart and soul. That’s probably why people from across the globe came to a small town in Montreal to hire an italian boy to write their songs and produce their records. Rock Legend News: Your first album “Aldo Nova,” reached Number 23 on the Billboard Hot 100, double platinum status in U.S. Thinking back to the beginning of your career did you think you would have become so successful or did you have a plan in mind for success? Aldo Nova: The album actually went to # 8 on the Billboard charts. Yes,my dream as a young boy, from the day I got that little plastic ukulele from my mom was to be on the cover of Circus magazine. So my saying has always been,”If you believe it, then you can achieve it,” Rock Legend News: After 5 albums, you seem to be more involved in the role of producer and songwriter than performing. Am I wrong or, are there other plans in the works? Aldo Nova: Yes, I did write and produce and play more on other people’s albums than mine, but I won’t anymore. You may find that a bold statement, but I got tired of everybody around me getting rich while I collected the crumbs, even though it was all me you always heard in their phrasing their arrangements, “my songs and productions.” Rock Legend News: You have worked with many musicians such as Blue Oyster Cult and Jon Bon Jovi. Do you enjoy working with other musicians; do you find it to be a gift or do you feel it is more difficult than working indePAGE 4 ROCK LEGEND NEWS
pendently? Aldo Nova: I find it much easier to cut out the middleman and do everything myself. That’s why on my 1st album apart from the drums, it was all me. Rock Legend News: You won a Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 1997 for, “Falling Into You,” by Celine Dion and composed the song, “This is the Night,” for Clay Aiken which was a Number 1 hit in U.S. charts as well as the best selling single in 2003. What is the secret of your success and what do your future plans include? Aldo Nova: Again the only secret I can give you is do what you enjoy in life, and it’ll come out in whatever you do. Rock Legend News: You were a big part of the 80’s with hits like, “Fantasy,” which was Number 3 on the charts and, “Monkey on Your Back,” Number 12 on the charts. I want to ask you the same thing I am asking others because it is a profound occurrence now. Why do you think the 70’s/80’s are re-igniting? I mean, it is like it’s 1985 in Colombia, South America; it is happening here in Italy and it is apparent all over the world that the 80’s and even the 70’s rock styles are becoming enlivened again. Aldo Nova: The 80’s were where the trends came in. The funny haircuts, the synths, the leopard suits (LOL) MTV, and that’s why people want to relive their youths through music. The crowd that are buying albums now are the same people that were buying them in the 80s.
