Marks — July 2016 In the mid 1980’s Ahmet Ertegun, co-founder and president of Atlantic Records was considering signing popular Hollywood, California glam rock band HAWK to Atlantic Records. Just at that time turmoil within the band began and ultimately everything disintegrated due to money issues and personal differences. Being signed to Atlantic Records may have been a good thing, but maybe not; 25 years later, a HAWK album is at least still being sold by one of the original HAWK artists, Doug Marks, for $7.50– $18.00 each. If Atlantic Records had signed the band, possibly a lot of money/fame/artistic validation would have happened with HAWK but also possibly no money would have been made for the artists. In some cases however, selling your own albums can give you control over what you earn.

Unveiling of Lemmy's Statue at The Rainbow


MOTÖRHEAD FANS AND FRIENDS PAID TRIBUTE TO LEMMY AT THE RAINBOW BAR & GRILL, HIS FAVORITE LOS ANGELES HAUNT A statute of the one and only Lemmy was unveiled last night at Rainbow Bar & Grill in West Hollywood. Fans of the late Motörhead frontman Ian ‘Lemmy’ Kilmister raised over $22,000 for a life-size statue at his favorite bar. It wasn’t unusual to see him sitting at the end of the bar playing his favorite video game. The Rainbow was Lemmy’s home. Todd Singerman, Motörhead’s long-time manager said, “One of Lemmy’s worst fears was that when he died, the world would forget about him. He’s now immortal. No one ever will forget about him because he was a god. He was a man, but he was a god.” The statue was created by artist Travis Moore with the help of 20 people and took about five months to build. Lemmy passed away on December 28, 2015, only few days after his 70th birthday. He was one of our favorite people to have at Riot Fest and he is missed every day. He definitely won’t be forgotten. Motörhead fans, friends, and family gathered together in Los Angeles yesterday to pay tribute to the band's legendary singer/bassist Lemmy Kilmister, who passed away after a long illness shortly after Christmas. A touching public memorial service was streamed on the band's Youtube channel yesterday, following a private service, and elsewhere around town, Lemmy's favorite Sunset Strip haunt the Rainbow Bar & Grill, as well as nearby Strip fixtures the Whiskey a Go Go and the Roxy, opened doors to well wishers for an evening of tribute. Fans are eager to be connected to their favorite bands and musicians. Build a database (list) of your fan club by having a sign-up box on your website and Facebook.

Mailing lists are invaluable. Send out emailings frequently to let fans know what you are doing or when you have something to sell like merchandise or tour info. You can even include a PayPal buy button in your emailings for those who want to buy from you immediately. PayPal code is no excuse easy, just copy and paste. MailChimp.com is easy software to use with copy and paste code for websites. They have a Wizard walk through for setting up your graphics and text for your emailing/advertising. The software archives your mailing list for you.


Pete Way Not Totally Invincible Pete Way has battled health issues over the last few years and after getting through cancer Pete has once again been struggling with some health issues and elected to enter the hospital on August 13 for a few days due to very low pulse and heart troubles. His blood wasn’t being pumped around his body which stressed his heart making it work twice as hard. Pete said, "If I’d have put it off another day... it would have been too late. They got to me just in time. “If they hadn’t seen me when they did, if I’d have put it off another day - which is what I would have done, well, I just wouldn’t have gone, I’d have ignored it, which is what I always do - then it would have been too late. They wouldn’t have been able to save me. It was that close. I’d like to say thanks to all the good people who

have been in touch, left nice messages. It’s helped me through it all, it really has. I’m going back next month for electric shock treatment to the heart. I don't know what that involves. It sounds terrifying. I might need an operation and I might need a pacemaker but I don’t mind that. Lemmy had one. Slash had one. He [Slash] sent me a get well message while I was in hospital, which was nice of him. I’ll have to get in touch and ask him about his pacemaker, see how it all works. That’s how I’ve lived my life. I’ve been very lucky. And especially lucky on this occasion. I’m just happy to be here, telling you my story, telling you I’m alright because it nearly wasn’t, he says. Shop Claims "Most Expensive Guitar" Sale with '58 Gibson Explorer Sep 13, 2016 by Dan Orkin | Reverb.com

London-based guitar shop and Reverb seller Denmark Street Guitars has announced the sale of an original 1958 Gibson Explorer for the sum of $1,100,000. According to a press release issued by the store, this amount is believed to be the highest priced transaction ever for a single, non-artist-affiliated guitar. "I have been aware of a set of matching korina guitars for the last 10 plus years owned by a leading collector based in the US whom I have known since I was 16" said Justin Harrison of Denmark Street Guitars. "He always mentioned that he had the guitar but wanted $1 million plus [for it]. In speaking to the buyer and discussing his desire to own some classics guitars, I discussed that I was aware of a '58 Explorer that was the holy grail of vintage instruments. After 4 to 5 days of going back and forth, I finalised the sale of this at 1.1 million." The Explorer was brokered privately and was not transacted on Reverb's site. Denmark Street Guitars arranged the sale between the two private parties but did not possess the instrument during the selling process.This guitar is one of 19 Explorers produced by Gibson in 1958, with a body built from korina and pair of original PAF humbucker pickups. The Explorer was initially designed as a high concept model in 1957, with fewer than 50 known examples shipped from Gibson in 1958 and 1959. Other guitars were built using the parts from this era in later years, but few exist with as complete a pedigree as this instrument. One of 131 Gibson Thunderbird IV Non-reverse Bass Guitars Built in 1966 The futuristic Thunderbird bass was the vision of Raymond H Dietrich, a former automobile designer known for his work with Crysler and Lincoln. The mahogany body is finished in a deep sunburst. Impressed on the back of the headstock is the six digit serial number, 540635. The mahogany set-in neck has a rosewood fretboard with 20 original frets and nine dot inlays. It has a neck scale length of 34 1/2". There are no breaks to the headstock or the neck which is often found on Thunderbirds with their elegant elongated headstock. Both humbucking pickups with chrome plated covers appear to be original. The code on the tone pot is 1346533 which is a Centra Lab pot for the 33rd week of 1965. Only the first four numbers, 1376 _ _ _ of the code are visible on the neck volume pot and the bridge volume pot is covered is concealed by solder. All the the pots appear to be original and none of the wiring in the shielded control cavity appears to be altered. The jack has "Pat No. 2003717 others pending" written on it. Additional features of this 8.8 pound bass include chrome hardware, large Kluson open gear bass tuners, three strap buttons, Tune-o-matic bridge, a stop tailpiece, an expansive three ply beveled edge white pickguard with a thunderbird on the upper bass side, a thumb rest mounted on the treble side and a top mounted output jack. There are two volume knobs and a master tone knob. All

knobs are gold metal top reflector knobs. Missing parts include the truss rod cover with the Gibson logo, the chrome bridge and pickup cover. The pickguard is cracked near four of the screws. There is some weather checking mostly on the front of the bass, a noticeable ding on the front of the headstock, a variety of dings primarily on the edges, and extremely light buckle rash on the back. Overall this bass is in very nice condition given the age. The frets show very little wear with tons of life remaining thanks to the flatwound strings that were used. It has a compact mahogany neck that is in great condition. The truss rod works great and the bass plays wonderfully. It has nice action with a straight neck. As expected the T-Bird bass has a big, deep, meaty tone. It comes with a new modified black hardshell case. It has sold. At the time, Fender had been the leader in the electric bass market since their introduction of the Precision Bass twelve years earlier. The Thunderbird was designed by U.S. auto designer Raymond H. Dietrich (Chrysler, Lincoln, Checker)[1] along with the Firebird guitar, which it resembles in design, construction, and name. Dietrich retired to Kalamazoo, Michigan in 1960 at the age of 66. At the time, Kalamazoo was the home of Gibson Guitars and in 1962, Gibson boss Ted McCarty, convinced Dietrich to come out of retirement to design a new solid body electric guitar that would not be limited by the traditional ways of designing and engineering an electric guitar - the result was the classic, 'reverse' Gibson Firebird, released in 1963, one of the most iconic and recognisable electric guitar designs ever. Gibson had made forays into radical body shapes - the Flying V and Explorer in the 1950s - which met limited initial success. The president of Gibson, Ted McCarty, hired car designer Ray Dietrich to design a guitar that would have popular appeal. Under Dietrich, the Firebird took on the lines of mid-50s car tailfins. Dietrich took the Explorer design and rounded the edges. The most unusual aspect is that the guitar is "backward" in that the right-hand (treble) horn of the body is longer than the other. Thus, the original Firebirds were unofficially referred to as "reverse". The Firebird looks like an Explorer with softer "points," or maybe a reverse Fender Jaguar or Jazzmaster. The Firebird is the first Gibson solid-body to use neck-through construction, wherein the neck extended to the tail end of the body. The neck itself is made up of five plies of mahogany interspersed with four narrow strips of walnut for added strength. Other features were reverse headstock (with the tuners on the treble side) and "banjo"-style planetary geared tuning keys, as well as mini-humbucking pickups. Some Firebirds from 1965 featured Gibson's single-coil P-90 pickup. The Firebird line went on sale in mid-1963 with four models distinguished by pickup and tailpiece configurations (see below). Unlike the Les Paul and SG line, which used the terms "Junior", "Special", "Standard" and "Custom", the Firebird used the Roman numerals "I", "III", "V" and "VII". Gibson's line of Thunderbird basses is rooted in the design of the Firebird, and uses even Roman numerals ("II" and "IV") to distinguish it. From 1965 to 1969, Gibson introduced "non-reverse" models after failing to achieve marketing success with the unusual reverse-body design. Gibson had also received complaints from Fender that the Firebird headstock mirrored the Stratocaster and that the body violated Fender's design patents, with Fender threatening a lawsuit. The "non-reverse" body is a more standard double-cutaway design, with the bass horn being longer than the treble horn and the headstock having the tuners mounted on the bass side. It also had a standard glued-in ("set") neck rather than neck-through construction, as well as other, less noticeable changes in design and build. Pickup and tailpiece configuration for the V and VII were the same as the earlier "reverse" models, although the I- and III-models were now shipped with two or three P-90 pickups and plain vibratos. After a few years of disappointing sales, the "non-reverse" line was dropped. "Reverse" body Firebirds were first reissued in 1972, with a commemorative "Bicentennial" model released in 1976, available in either black with gold-plated hardware or the traditional sunburst finish. Tools of Songwriting Magic

Marks For Rock Legend News September, 2016 In 1983, Steve Jobs lured John Sculley away from Pepsi-Cola to serve as Apple's CEO, asking, "Do you want to spend the rest of your life selling sugared water, or do you want a chance to change the world?" While songwriting magic can sell your albums, songwriting includes many ingredients. One of the most important ingredients is the vocalist; especially one that is talented enough to change the world. In 1997, I was working with some tech guys from Universal Studios in Los Angeles during the early stages of Internet website development. I designed two websites for an entertainment site. One was fast loading, the other was heavy with images and slower to load. I was discussing with a lead tech guy that it would take too long for the page to load if we used the page we liked with all the images. The lead tech guy said, “You can’t baby people and not grow personally and professionally. People will have to adapt to modern technology and update their machines and computer systems.” This is very true and is what has happened. The same goes for anything including music and lyrics. Songs are sometimes written from a simple perspective, simplistic thinking, worrying that if intellect, or words that are not used in everyday language are used people won’t like the song. selling records. A stellar vocalist can be the most important tool for creating a successful song. Even if you prefer simplistic language a Led Zeppelin song is a good example. As I look over the lyrics for Led Zeppelin’s song, "Since I've Been Loving You,” I think, if an average vocalist had interpreted/sung these lyrics the song may never have been as successful as it has been. But, it isn’t average because of how


the band delivered the song overall. Led Zeppelin’s talented chemistry of desire and passion in a group of talented like-minded musicians/artists made it a historic rock song that easily arouses senses, timelessly - because sexy is timeless. Robert Plant's sensuality wraps around every word as if it were a sexual experience. Jimmy Page of course ripped the soul out of wood, tubes and metal and exposed the guitars' capabilities ever so eloquently. The result is from how the message was delivered even though the words are fairly simplistic. Depending upon how a song is sung it could actually become a great song or it could become a song that lingers in the cobwebs of time.

Unless you are from the United Kingdom or other areas of Europe you may not think to use the word 'treacle,' to describe drug experience. Treacle is basically molasses. But, UFO did use the word at a time when drugs were prevelant during the 70s and the song is so innovative that when I first heard it I was blown away by it. Blown away partly because I didn't remember hearing it in the 70s, probably not, or would definitely have remembered because I was always looking for unique music, still am, but they put some amazing music to simple words, with the word 'treacle' as 'subject' and title. However, they crafted a drug-like experience that takes you into the experience with each instrument tone and effects along with seductive vocals.

Phil Mogg is a master at melodically telling a story. A friend, Carl-Eric Månsson of Manssrock said to me once, "UFO is considered hard rock music but they are more like melodic colorful music." Agreed! They paint pictures with music. Amazing artists. And, Phil Moggs vocals make a world of difference in this classic song along with the guitar that seems to be using an echoplex alongside Pete Way's sultry, walking bass. You really experience the story, the trip, physicallly, mentally and visually. To write a song about love, money, politics or drugs can be tricky but if you describe the effects, for example, like the song "Treacle People," which describes a drug experience in a storybook fashion, it becomes a whole different entity. Write about the effects of the topic instead of just writing about the obvious as if it were front page news. People want to get lost musically in a place that is loving, warm, fuzzy and fantasy. They want to go to paradise. The 70s included many magical, mysterious and controversial experiences which were integrated into music by artists like: Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Jefferson Airplane, UFO 1 and 2, Emerson, Lake And Palmer, Ten Years After (Cricklewood Green) and more.

Pink Floyd’s early material was about psychedelics and they were astute at creating a musical ‘trip;’ an acid trip - musically. They gave us the experience audibly and lyrically. When Emerson Lake and Palmer came out with Lucky Man in 1970, I kept thinking how innovative it was and listened to it nonstop even though my preference is melodic hard rock. But I liked their unique way of bending and shaping sound with moogs, synthesizers. It is true that innovative approaches can appeal to other artists and not as much the mainstream but if you are told something enough you begin to believe it. For example, if you tell someone to listen to something because it is intriguing and can take you to another world the person being told that may begin to look at it differently. It's the same with songwriting. Someone said recently, “Everyone is creative.” Though that is true to a degree, the degree is the limit or self-imposed boundary, but generally the good stuff is beyond that boundary. Many will not venture there.

I've been asked, “Are you reading the dictionary!?” My response, “Yes, and the Thesaurus. But, I like to write, I have a lot to say. Lyrics and poetry are creative extensions of an artists emotions, experiences and or thoughts. Using the right words is similar to painting a picture. Choose the right colors and brush strokes to create a work of art or choose the right vocalist and words to create a timeless song. It is, but isn't necessarily, creative writing. It is articulating what you feel. Here are examples: For example you are writing a

song about dreams and you write: "My dreams are imagined awareness." You could instead write: “My dreams are illusory perception” (instead of using imagined try: illusory) (instead of awareness try: perception) Thesaurus.com and Dictionary.com are great sources for finding words other than what you may normally use or think of using. Every songwriter probably has a thesaurus open daily, or should. Try buying a thesaurus too, even older used books may have obscure words. Words are tools like paint colors and music notes.

could keep you in the limelight in a small but important way. There is a fear that by Liking someone's post you are endorsing it. But you can be selective in what you choose to Like. And gee, life is short, so what if you endorse something. That may bring you more fans! You never know, things are changing by the minute. Something as simple as Liking other peoples stuff on Facebook can be good advertisement and if you are Liking a fan's comment or post it could help improve fan loyalty as well as gain other fans who notice you Liking their 'friends' post. Fans of yours dearly love you and make you a part of their life. When you show that you are even sort of aware of them, it is not only heartfelt by them but makes the fan feel that you are appreciative of them, or at least recognize them - kind of like throwing a pic or drumstick to them in the audience or touching their hands reaching out to the crowd or signing an autograph. It can also be good advertising for you or get you some recognition in some unknown way. Possibly other musicians may be looking for you and not even remember you or be thinking of you and see your name, and it

But I have seen some people become offended because someone Shared their post. Facebook is a gift. It is a very big gift. And, you can make a living with it if you just relax about some things and look at the

Remember this, the Share & Like options are there for very, very good reason; mult-level marketing (MLM). Networking benefits all of us. Maybe you have fans working for you now because of it. And, for the fear based individuals, if it was illegal it would not be in effect on Facebook. Facebook has a bank of attorney's. Facebook company is not going to setup a system that is illegal - although, sure things can be twisted around like everything and new laws can be made and so on, but such is life. Adjust. Of course the government will be involved at some level, as they seem to feel they need to be in every aspect of life. But if you choose to elect someone, anyone, to lead you, they will 'lead you.' It is one thing to be an awesome presence but to be a person of substance as well is even better — and rare, like Hal Patino. Hal commands respect, but not in the sense that he verbally asks for it. He just automatically commands it because of the presence he has worked hard to obtain; a type of artistic quality, maybe having to do with his Italian name or possibly even Italian blood. I don't know, but I do know that Italians are very much like that. They work very hard to become the best they can be as a person, and more importantly, as an individual. Going through Facebook newsfeed I came across Hal's photos and realized how one photo was the perfect magazine cover photo for this issue. So I contacted Hal seeking his permission to use some photos for the review and casually mentioned that I would do an interview if he wanted. Hal, kind of took me aback by how gentlemanly he is, how kind and responsive he is and said he would happily do an interview and permission to use photos was granted.

It was apparent from the few times we communicated that Hal Patino is by far a man of substance and not just a magazine cover. This is fairly obvious by his presence and actions overall but you never know until you communicate with someone who they really are. To be someone of intelligence, humble and provacative while communicating with compassion is generally surprising. Some things can easily be misconstrued and accepted while twisting it to fit negative perspectives in the world today. There has been much said about why Hal Patino is no longer with King Diamond that I think something important has been overlooked. Hal is a human being, he is not owned by anyone. He contributed 19 years of his life to King Diamond, a company owned by King Diamond, when Hal could have had his own company. Regardless of what happened with Hal no longer contributing to King Diamond's company, he did aid King Diamond's ideas and fortunes by being an important ingredient in the King Diamond chemistry but Hal also gained from the experience, of course. It is obvious that Hal Patino easily stands on his own though and time for Hal to develop his own creative ideas and express

them in his own way. There is absolutey nothing wrong with that no matter how it is rationalized, including the satanic accusations which like any religion stems from artistic creative ideas and creative execution. Believe it or not.

Rock Legend News: Halo of Dust is a wicked video and song, really driving hard rock. Have you found out why it was banned by a religious group and removed from YouTube? Hal Patino: Hey LONDA, yes we have. MC (Maryann Cotton) was contacted by YouTube.com and they told us that there were some disturbing scenes in the video. I guess that's the scene with the half

naked girl playing with the crucifix, (I don't know). They also told us that we could have the video up again if we just blurred MC or took him out of the video? hehehe :). So, we kept uploading the video as they removed it and I think it happened 6 times. But now it's there, so hopefully it will stay there this time :). Rock Legend News: After almost 19 years as an integral player with King Diamond and close to 40 years in rock, you continue to become even better at your art within Maryann Cotton — truly a rock star band. What are the immediate plans for Maryann Cotton through the end of 2016 and going into early 2017? Hal Patino: I don't know if I become better, but it is the first time in my career I can and be able to do the stuff I always wanted to do. Our plan now is to finish Europe and focus on the U.S. It is just a fact that we will start touring in the end of 2016. I’m very excited because I think there is a great future for this kind of music and this type of band in the U.S. right now. But no matter what, we'll be there and we will rock the shit out of the Americans and have a good time that's for sure! Rock Legend News: Having worked with Dick Wagner assuredly added to some of the great Maryann Cotton material. I’ve listened to the samples on MaryannCotton.net with “No Wish Upon No Star,” "Into Eternity," and every song is a hit song. Though there is a hint of influence from 70s and 80s music, what is the band’s method or formula for creating quality music? And now that Dick Wagner is gone, has that affected what you do or how you do it?

"Free Falling Angels ," Live: Watch > Hal Patino: First I have to say that Dick Wagner means a lot to me in many ways. We became very close friends and he was a true rock star and a wonderful person. Beside all the personal stuff he was my all time favorite guitar player and songwriter. Just listen to the stuff he did with Coop (Alice Cooper) back in the days and yes, it is very clear where the inspiration is coming from. Me and MC are doing all our songwriting together and I really don't think that there is a method or formula for how we do it. Everything that we do is always spontaneous and we only write stuff that fits the Maryann Cotton character. The stuff that we wrote with DW will see the day of light but nobody knows when at this point. But it will be released thats for sure and I can't wait for people out there to hear it. Rock Legend News: On MaryannCotton.net is a list of people the band has worked with. One of them is Mark Farner, a favorite of mine. What has Maryann Cotton done with Mark? Hal Patino: Well, the ''band'' has not worked with Mark Farner, but Maryann is a good friend of him and did a performance together with him a few years ago at The Fillmore in Detroit. Rock Legend News: Tell us a little about your equipment preferences. What is it you like about Warkwick Bass, what drew you to that brand? Do you have any other bass preferences and what do you play through? Hal Patino: What I like about Warwick basses is that I like the shape on the Streamer Series and it fits my body perfectly. But to be honest I really don't dig the sound of the MEC pickups. The sound is way too clean for me, so, therefore I've changed all my pickups to EMG to get a dirtier sound that I like + I removed all the knobs except for the volume control. What drew me to that brand was that I was asked if I would have an endorsement deal with Warwick. There is a lot of very cool brands like old Gibson EB Series and Rickenbacker 4001 or 4003 Series that I really like. My live setup is 2x Warwick 600 watt heads 2x 8x10 cabs +2x 1 15 pa cabs.

Rock Legend News: Even the most unique personality has influences. Who influenced you the most to start playing bass and develop your unique style? Hal Patino: It must have been all the glam bands from the early 70s. Bands like Alice Cooper, Slade, Purple, Heep, ASO. It was a world that I could relate to and with no doubt I wanted to be a rock star hehehe :). But I think my main influence has to be Jim Lea from the original Slade. He must be the most underrated rock bass player ever and close to being one of the best ever in the hard rock history I think. Rock Legend News: Having been in the music industry for so long what are some important changes that you feel are occurring now in rock n’ roll, playing shows, concert venues, recording and how music is being sold? Hal Patino: To be honest I don’t see any major changes. I know a lot of bands and people from my time complain about this and that but the main thing is that we just got older and it is so much harder to hang in there. My whole band is in their mid 20s, and the stuff going on in the Band Camp and whether young bands

are the same as we were back in the 80s... The only major change is all the downloading and Online stuff. I agree that if you are a band that is use to selling millions of albums and now only sell like 20% of what you use to do, it is not cool. But for an upcoming band today it can be a big + because you can promote yourself Online for free and a do lot of other stuff that we couldn’t do back in the days where we started. So, there are good and bad sides I think. Rock Legend News: Maryann Cotton’s major inspiration is Alice Cooper but, like you, Maryann also seems to have a natural instinct for theatre and entertainment. Does entertainment run in your family? Hal Patino: Oh yes it is no big secret, hehehe, and as I said the Coop is also my big inspiration. Maryann's natural instinct for theatre and entertainment already started when he was a few years old I think. Rock Legend News: Dick Wagner wrote a full concept album together with Maryann, ”Chester Rose – The Legend Begins,” where he brought in Alice Cooper to write three songs for him. The album wasn’t released because Dick Wagner died in 2014, a few weeks before the final studio recordings. Are there plans to release this album or what is going to happen with it? Hal Patino: Me and MC wrote these 3 songs together and like I said, the stuff that we wrote with DW will see the day of light. Nobody knows when at this point. But it will be released. I really can't say too much about that subject at this point; sorry about that :) Rock Legend News: You’re a prolific artist. A band you started, Nordic Beast, with rock classics John Norum and drummer Mikkey Dee from Motörhead, vocalist Åge Sten Nilsen from Wig Wam was a hard rockin' band. Do you think about working with them again or do you feel you are on track with Maryann Cotton? Any other future projects for you aside from Maryann Cotton? Hal Patino: To be correct Mikkey Dee and John Norum started the band. But I don’t see that it is going to happen again. I think that was a great project but it was doomed from day one because no one in the band really had the time to do it. But only time can tell what it is going to happen. At this moment I’m only

going to focus on the MC stuff. How is “Into Eternity” doing? Hal: I wish I knew The “Into Eternity” sales Londa :) but we haven't received any statements from the record company so far. So this is going to be the big question. Rock Legend News: What King Diamond album are you most proud of and what is the reason? Hal Patino: Well...Every album has its signature and its story. When I think about the King Diamond albums that I have recorded I will always think about the session and how the vibe was doing, the recording, sometimes the weather, hehehe. I know it sounds stupid but that’s the way it is. So there will be two albums that stands out: “Them" and “Conspiracy.” “Them” because it was my first album with King Diamond and “Conspiracy” because of the good times we had in LA together :). Every 'thinking-big' book I've ever read says to give back; some say give 10% of what you make, but I say do something instead, kind of like teaching someone to fish instead of giving them fish or instead of 'sharing' or reposting yellow or pink ribbons etcetera to your Facebook page which does absolutely nothing for anyone. Two great quotes above say a lot. Two of the truest statements ever! They coincide with an anonymous message I recently received saying: “Don’t keep doing things for 'them,' they don’t do anything for you, nor will they. Set limits for yourself, 'they' are takers.” It's interesting how two sentences can say everything about a person. I didn't respond simply because I believe I am successful due to opposite thinking. The preference is to find the positive in things because I wish to live in a Persian Paradise either through philanthropic gestures or my own imagination rather than Hades. Either way, my way, does not include negativity, anger and vengeance. Philanthropic gesture is not about expecting something from anyone you do something for. Far from it. Interestingly though, any time I do something for anyone, I always learn or become inspired from it in some unexpected way and in turn I hope that my gestures could help someone as well! Always, it comes back to you no matter whether you do good or bad. The bad comes back just like the good. Probably the most important thing is how you handle failure because that is where you either go up a level or downward spiral. For me, I just improve when someone dislikes what I do. The truth is that those who hate are basically saying, "they hate who or what they are not." It's a wicked cross to bear.

Every battle, every challenge that comes my way I look to role models like Alexander The Great and Lorenzo de' Medici for guidance. And when someone challenges me, I love it because it is a gift, a chance to only become a better person. Like both of those role models I have my emotional side too. It was actually very beneficial for them and it can beneficial to me as well. Also like Alexander and Lorenzo, my approaches and applications to problem solving stem from love and passion; sometimes frustration. The day after I wrote, Wicked Cross to Bear, I received a message from my friend, drummer, Menace Child on Facebook saying: “Since you liked my picture, you now have to post a black & white picture of you and write, "Challenge Accepted.” Let's fill Facebook with black & white pictures to show our support for the battle against cancer. That is the challenge.” Well, here is where role model Filippo Brunelleschi comes in. Remember the architecht who completed the Duomo in Florence, Italy? He was one of the architects in competition to do so 122 years after the first stone had been laid on September 8, 1296 by Arnolfo di Cambio and many failed attempts to complete the Duomo thereafter. Filippo Brunelleschi presented a logical way to solve the problem. He showed that it would be as simple as cracking an egg in half. Other competitors said, "That's too easy!" Filippo Brunelleschi was chosen and solved the problem. Instead of doing what my challenger, dear Menace Child, told me to do, I decided to do something that could truly benefit people instead of posting a picture of myself. Luckily I live near Norway now and can get fresh Norwegian Salmon. But, our oceans and land are polluted. We have to fight with the best defenses possible. And, if you want to do something really valuable, start at the foundation; find logical ways to clean up the planet - but be careful of who you donate money to do that for you. Start with what buy and do with trash. Doctors have their place. But, the truth is, they scare me more than any health problem. We need to take responsibility for our bodies. Most people won’t though and tend to believe the doctor who won’t give their own families chemo will give it to them because they care about them—you! Really? I have always been averse to mainstream doctors and I will tell you that an experience I had with a dentist in 1988 is a good example why. I had a toothache for a few days, went to a dentist and was told I needed a root canal, etc... A big money maker that I knew of even back then. I chose to go to an alternative/ integrative dentist to see what they would say without telling them about the root canal diagnosis. Answer was, it had to do with grinding my teeth while sleeping due to stress. So, no root canal, saved a lot of money and I am 64 years old with all of my original strong teeth. Every year, Kids Wish Network raises millions of dollars in donations supposedly to help dying children and their families. But for every dollar donated, only 3 cents actually goes to those children and families. The other 97 cents goes into the bank accounts of the company’s operators, and for-profit companies hired by Kids Wish to drum up donations. I wish I could say Kids Wish was an isolated case, but unfortunately, they are just one of many.

According to CNN: “In the past decade alone, Kids Wish has channeled nearly $110 million donated for sick children to its corporate solicitors. An additional $4.8 million has gone to pay the charity's founder and his own consulting firms. No charity in the nation has siphoned more money away from the needy over a longer period of time.” Is Your Favorite Charity on This List? They were looking for a specific kind of charity—those writing fat checks to for-profit corporations to raise the vast majority of their donations, year in and year out. Several watchdog organizations say charities should spend no more than 35 percent of the money they raise on fund-raising expenses. However, the investigation identified hundreds of charities giving their hired solicitors more than twice that much— often more than two-thirds of the take. Investigators found these organizations to be rampant with fraud, waste and mismanagement. Data from this investigation show the worst charities devote less than four percent to direct cash aid. The worst offender was yet again for the 11th year in a row is, UNICEF - CEO, receives $1,200,000 per year, (plus use of a Royal Royce for his exclusive use where ever he goes, and an expense account that is rumoured to be well over $150,000.) Only pennies from the actual donations goes to the UNICEF cause (less than $0.14 per dollar of income). The second worst offender this year is Marsha J. Evans, President and CEO of the American Red Cross... for her salary for the year ending in 2009 was $651,957 plus expenses. yet again, World Vision President (Canada) receives $300,000 base salary, (plus supplied - a home valued in the $700,000 - $800,000 dollar value range, completely furnished, completely paid all housing expenses, including taxes, water/sewer, telephone/ fax, HD/high speed cable, weekly maid service and pool/yard maintenance, fully paid private schooling for his children, upscale automobile and an $55,000 personal expense account for clothing/food, with a $125,000 business expense account). Get this, because it is a "religious based" charity, it pays, little to no taxes, can receive government assistance and does not have to declare were the money goes. Only about $0.52 of earned income per dollar is available for charity causes. Of the sixty some odd "charities" we looked at, the lowest paid (President/C.E.O/ Commissioner) was heading up a charity group right here in Canada. We found, believe it or not, it was...... The Salvation Army's Commissioner Todd Bassett receives a salary of only $13,000 per year (plus housing) for managing this $2 Billion dollar organization. Lonnie Vencent has been bassist with Hollywood glam band HAWK during the 80’s, former members of KING KOBRA to form BULLET BOYS eventually signing with Warner Bros. Q: What has been your approach to music Lonnie? LV: Conglomerating my influences into my music. Q: In 1984, You, Scott Travis, Doug Marks, Charles Morrill were in the Hollywood, California’s 80’s glam band HAWK. The band seemed to have a good future. What exactly did not work? LV: There was no record company. It was funded by Doug and his wife Londa. It was like being signed to a label, because it was funded by Metal Method.

Q: HAWK image designer, Londa R. Marks added to the unique chemistry of HAWK. She also designed and created some clothes for the Bullet Boys. How do you like working with Londa? LV: First, Londa was the fifth member of HAWK. She was a huge part of that. Second, I love working with her. She is the consummate professional. Q: The Bullet Boys, Formed in 1987, one of the best 80’s and 90’s hard rock bands composed of former Ratt guitarist/King Kobra lead vocalist Marq Torien (vocals), former King Kobra guitarist Mick Sweda, you, Lonnie Vencent (bass) and Jimmy D'Anda (drums, percussion). The self titled record was a big success peaking at number 34 on Billboard’s 200. How difficult is it and what is involved in creating a hit album? LV: We didn't create it. We lived it. Q: Can we expect a new Bullet Boys album any time soon? LV: No.


Q: What would you like to say to your Italian fans? LV: Can't wait to come over there with the new band. Please contact me on my Facebook. I want to hear from my Italian fans.

Q: I want to ask you the same thing I am asking others because it is a profound occurrence now. Why do you think the 80's are reigniting? I mean, it is like it's 1985 in Colombia, South America; it is happening here in Italy and it is apparent all over the world that the 80’s and even the 70’s rock styles are becoming enlivened again. LV: I see it differently here.

Proud to be Irish With Roots In Cork & Antrim

My name is Italian, my blood is Irish but my soul is music & art. Maybe it's the Irish rebel in me, maybe it's just that a problem seems like a creative project that by solving it could bring happiness for others, but for some reason since high school people have come to me with questions not only about art and music but about life in general. Yep, since Catholic high school and Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels, "Devil With The Blue Dress On" was blaring from my transistor radio at recess, in the 60s, others have asked me about my views on music. Being reprimanded by a nun for rocking out to Mitch Ryder made 'The Forbidden' of course even more desirous. The Beatles, song, "I Want To Hold Your Hand," came on a juke box after Catholic Church at a soda shop one Sunday, just simply hooking me. It was the first time I heard it, grabbed my sister Sherry, pulled her up and exclamed, "Listen to this!" Then passionately explained why it was so exciting. Eventually I talked everyone I could into getting Beatle haircuts, beginning a journey of marketing I suppose. But first, I made my brothers and sisters form a copy band to play Beatles, Jan & Dean and Motown songs eventually getting into 'hard stuff' like The Doors. Rehearsals were enforced by me in the living room during school lunch breaks and after school. My instrument was drums because I had to learn Day Tripper, badly. I sang too, on the front porch, until the stereo got ripped out of the socket and thrown off my stage/front porch... Still, I sang, while walking to school pretending the grass was my audience, the sidewalk my stage, until Jimi Hendrix became my god. At that point I stopped playing and

started selling acid, white crosses and soda bottles to buy albums and go to clubs. In 1971, I met Doug Marks around the time I did my first painting, a Phoenix on my black refrigerator. I hit the road with him after we married and began working with his bands. Always the professional, I was elected to be band critic at rehearsals and shows taking notes, preparing for band meetings, making flyers, designing logos, t-shirts and working with the roadies even when they were going to blood banks in Florida. Love those guys, they work so hard. Gosh, they never get paid enough, if paid, and never get enough credit. When we weren't at shows or rehearsals I was designing band clothes, sometimes cooking, sometimes waiting tables. We traveled and played the club circuit throughout the east coast and south, hung out with Greg Allman in Daytona in the afternoons at the bar/club/hotel/apartment, where we lived and played shows at night. In Atlanta I waited tables with Dave Hope's (bassist for Kansas) girlfriend and hung out with them at his house. He had a standing bass that I loved. Musicians stayed at the Holiday Inn where I also worked in Atlanta and I made sure Waylon Jennings, David Allan Coe, Elf and so on, got as much food as they could eat. The favor was returned with passes to see them at the Electric Ballroom, other venues in Atlanta. I gave Dio's band, Elf, food in the 70s and ended up living in Woodland Hills, CA, near him in the 80s.


In late 70's I was determined to be in Los Angeles while living in Denver doing a few art projects, growing gardens and baking pies for 2 years... After arriving in Los Angeles in 1980 I acquired a graphic job in east L.A., using part of my time at California Headwear, an NFL hat and t-shirt design company, to build graphics for starting Metal Method Productions. Each day I went back to Van Nuys after work and continued building guitar lesson books and ads. Doug gave guitar lessons during the day out of the studio apartment. We advertised in Circus, Creem, Guitar World and Hit Parader magazines, posted flyers all over Hollywood and the business took off which helped fund HAWK and ourselves. Up to that point we basically lived on, well, not much, whatever I made waiting tables or doing art projects. Soon though, I found a house in Woodland Hills with a basement for a recording studio and an extra bedroom on the top floor for my art studio — right behind Yngwie Malmsteen's house where I could listen to him play from my studio window. Many times I passed him flying up the winding hills driving like he plays; fast! One of my jobs as sponsor for HAWK was to find talent and I found the members of HAWK, designed band clothes, graphics, band image and at every rehearsal and show I took notes and critiqued the band, did some photography, booked some shows... We sold out every show in Hollywood. Scott Travis, now drummer for Judas Priest, sent me an audition video of him playing drums after we already hired a drummer. I was blown away. He was living with his mom playing clubs in Norfolk, VA at the time. After months of trying to convince Scott to come to LA., each time giving him my 'sound advice' as to why he needed to join HAWK, we got it worked out.Talking the band into hiring Scott and replacing original drummer, Glenn, wasn't easy in any capacity. But, when I played Scott's video for the band everyone sat there silently awe struck. Eventually Doug and I paid Scott and his girlfriend's trip to LA, and they shared a band apartment we rented for Charles (vocalist), his wife and kids. Scott is an inspiring, disciplined musician. Lonnie Vencent, killer bassist for Bullet Boys, our bass player then, lived at the house. We were a family. It was the best

art project I have done but, the dynamite detonated in 1990; actually before that with the original members. I began the next 25 years building my small publishing business then relocated to Florence, Italy where I thought I would just spend the rest of my life studying Medici and Renaissance artists but, the gods wanted something else for me. On my second trip to Florence, Italy in 2014, I met a guy who loaded luggage onto planes at Leonardo da' Vinci Airport in Rome. He had contacted me on Facebook and expressed how he liked to write. I kept telling him he should write about his love of rock music, do interviews and such. He was self conscious about it so I somewhat reluctantly, offered to help him, and did, but after awhile I had to end it for various reasons. However, that was how Rock Legend News began; just to archive the interviews. An interview I acquired with Pete Way (UFO Bassist) inspired me so much that I began Pete Way Facebook Group. Rock Legend News has since taken a life of its own. "Gifts aren't always what you want, though sometimes they can be what you need." HAWK Facebook page was started in 2011 also just to archive memorabilia for myself. Honestly, I had no idea it would turn into what it has. After 100 Likes, I thought, amazing! HAWK was 1984 -1990, thirty two years ago; can't believe I am saying that. I work too much, losing track of time... But, I have gotten so many appreciative messages AND questions that it has been surprising; some, really surprising but I will answer a few of them here from my HAWK and personal Facebook pages. Q: I don't mean to be rude or imposing but I'm willing to pay a decent amount for a HAWK shirt if in the right size Londa. This music is so important to me. Also, I can sell a case of HAWK albums at my record store, like tomorrow. What's the cost to ship to me?


Londa: Doug Marks has been the owner of all HAWK and Metal Method Productions copyrights since we divorced in 1990 when I sold my share of the business to him. So, to purchase HAWK merchandise you will need to contact him to see if he even has some. HAWK Facebook page is just my personal HAWK archive page. I do not have merchandise for sale, nor am I willing to sell or give away any more of the little bit of Hawk merchandise I have left. Sorry, I have given a lot of it away, even paid to ship quite a bit to Colombia as gifts which ended up being sold by the recipient... at least someone really wanted them. In my possession now are only about 6 original t-shirts and a couple dozen vinyl albums. That's all I have left and they stay with me. Londa: Hmm, well, Okay, I’m going to answer these questions combined with a few others along these lines not shown, because I’ve been asked such in both HAWK and my personal Facebook a few times now. This is kind of another 'personal' challenge but whatever, being Irish we try to make everything a party and since my bar arrived yesterday I'll have a glass of Chianti from it and try to explain a few things... ha, any excuse to party, even though I rarely do, but just love how my bar makes it feel like home now. As for how expensive Italy is... some aspects of Italy are ‘relatively’ expensive but what are you comparing it to? I lived in Los Angeles off and on for about 20 years. Italy is not even close to being as 'expensive' as L.A. and for me the quality of life in Italy surpasses L.A. — in my opinion, and in comparison. As for HAWK or Metal Method stuff I

post... Yes, I continue to post projects related to something that was built by Doug and I because the projects are part of me like any art/creative projects I work on. HAWK was my band too. Metal Method is something I was a founder of too. Doug and I have been friends since 1971 and I've worked on both for many years after they belonged to Doug. Previous HAWK members are still friends. Just because bands break up doesn't mean they stop being a part their work from past projects. Regardless of what artists are doing today we're still a part of that experience, creative endeavor and project. Yes, I remember taking orders for guitar lessons, talking to you guys and remember many of you, have spoken to several friends who ordered from those days. So cool to hear from you. Regarding relationship stuff... my ex, Doug Marks, divorced me in 1990. He found his true love and he's doing fine as far as I know but actually I haven't talked to him in a couple of years. No, no alimony was taken; a business deal was resolved with enough for me to live on from 1990 —1992 and I loaned Doug 10k out of that to help build his recording studio. At that point, I started my publishing company. Actually I have supported myself my whole life. I have enough to live on and do creative projects I am compelled to now. From my perspective, 'alimony' is an egregious government tactic. Love is not about money. We need to take care of ourselves financially. Of course be financially responsible with loved ones and supportive if you want to and agree, share whatever with loved ones, but if a relationship includes business it should be separate. Both learn and gain from each other in a relationship so why should one have to be responsible for the other if it ends? A price should not be put on Love. Musicians and artists are highly sensitive. If around the wrong person an artist can become sick, drained, destroyed. I'm a pretty sensitive/empathic person so eternity will be fine for me to wait for that truly special person. ran its course. I await one, that someone, more special than the rest and I am sure, it will be well worth it. Working hard and waiting to live an Italy dream proved that to me. Relationships end for reasons. Returning to ex's rarely ever works for good reasons and it just delays or detours our ability to improve our life. Missing past relationships may simply mean missing some aspect of that person who may have been an idea of what we ultimately need. Sometimes we don't even know what we need or want until we meet that one True Love. True Love is someone who completes YOU and, YOU complete them, are accepting of everything about each other, because you mirror each other. It's not about looks, it's not something you have to work at. It is a natural acceptance of the other part of your soul, character, personality, who you/they've been, who you/they are. “Love isn't finding someone you can live with; it's finding someone you can't live without.” Reminiscing usually stems from a romantic perspective believing that it can work if tried again. True Love though does not end. True Love is inseparable. But, chances are, karma or lessons with a past relationship have been resolved which is why it ended. Perhaps it's time to work through some other karma or do something else grander than imagined. We should all give ourselves that chance. "Too many expect the worst from others and when they are treated with kindness or genuine love they think that someone is out to get them." Many are having a hard time; unahppy, scared and viewing relationships as a "cash cow thing." Unfortunately, True Love is hardly in the equation. And, sadly many do not think they can be loved because they are so used to being around downward-spiraling, manipulative people who hate everyone and try to convince others to do the same. Art and Music is a Lifestyle only understood by someone on the same level. Loneliness can come with it, sure, but the same can happen with any relationship. It is a Lifestyle that requires sacrifice and staying strong when we feel weak. But, rewards for doing so are practically a phenomena or miracle.

How Rock Legend News E-Zine started was from putting together info for a friend regarding how they could — and should sell their own music. Recently, I decided to create a pdf file of the same for whomever else may want it thinking it might help other artists too. Info kept being added until I ended up with so much stuff that it became an E-Zine. Since I put the E-Zine together myself and it takes about a month or more, I will probably publish it every other month. It's turning into a great project and musicians are sending me their music to consider featuring in the zine. I was hesitant about being on Facebook but in 2011, when I first began it reminded me of an after-show-party every day. Now, some days can be kind of like Pandora's Box. But..."Gifts aren't always what you want, though sometimes they can be what you need." Gifts? Maybe I need a little Prosseco gift now.


Symbolism of Crow, Phoenix & Thunderbird The Birds in Alchemy By Adam McLean This article written in 1979 was first published in the Hermetic Journal No. 5.

Growing up in Marietta, Ohio, the first settlement in the Northwest Territory included living on land once belonging to Native American tribes like Shawnee & Iroquois. Arrowheads were found in my backyard daily; just move a little dirt and grass and find some. Possibly, spiritual connection with Native Americans was something that inspired me in regards to certain birds like The Crow, The Phoenix and The Thunderbird. My first painting was that of a colorful Phoenix on a refrigerator I painted black, as mentioned before. One deck of tarot cards I created was titled, "Crow's Magick." HAWK was based on Native American and Egyptian influence. Charles Morrill, the former vocalist, is full blooded Cherokee. Because artists are 'acutely aware' of their surroundings, it may help to understand some meanings of symbolism, art, words, pictures, alchemy, execution of theories in various forms even though no one has the final say of symbolic meanings; omens. The Native Americans believed that the giant Thunderbird could shoot lightning from its eyes. Another Native tale indicates lightning jetting out of the eyes of the Thunderbird when angered (during storms), and deafening cracks of thunder were produced when it flapped its mighty wings.

As a Native American symbol of creation, the Thunderbird marks the separation between the heavens and the earth. Moreover, in Northwestern tribes the Thunderbird is known as the Skyamsen, and is the dominating force of all natural activity. In this perspective, the Thunderbird is the Creator, Destroyer and Controller of Nature and must be honored and appeased at all cost. This is where we see a connection to rain as the Thunderbird is the bringer of life-giving waters (so agriculture may thrive and provide to the tribe).
