Interview With Gregg Russell & Dieter Schanzer of Wraith by Marija Brettle HardrockHaven.net, Sr. Columnist

(Excerpt) HRH: With the new recorded material can we expect more of the old Wraith signature duel guitar sound and major riffs, something that this band has become acclaimed for? Dieter: New WRAITH music combines hard-edge guitars with great vocals and burning lead solos all tied together with big melodies and great drumming. We also have a great ballad which I wrote‌ sort of WHITESNAKE/SCORPIONS vibe to it. The songs represents all of our influences but with the modern twist. Just very raw and natural, they all flowed real easy. They could be classed as hard me-

lodic rock in the Icon vain who were a huge influence. There’s also sprinklings of UFO, SCHENKER and the SCORPIONS, along with RATT/DOKKEN/CRUE who we also loved back in the day. They’re all original tunes that we’re very proud of! I mean hand made rock! (laughs) The first single is called “Under The Hammer” written with Pete Way from UFO. He also plays on the track and few others on this album. He’s a long time friend of Greggs and a hero of both of ours. Gregg: We are totally returning to our roots, drawing on the fantastic heritage, we have been working with legendary bassist Pete Way (WAYSTED, UFO). Also he has helped with a lot of the writing. The album is out and out classic guitar drenched rock, with massive melodies and lead boots at the same time!

WRAITH ALBUMS Lonely (7’’ - 1987) Naked Aggression (EP - 1989) Danger Calling (Album - 1992) Riot (Album - 1993) mp3 Schizophrenia (Album - 1996) Evolution (Album - 2006) mp3 Revelation (Album - 2017)

Hailed as “the new hope” for the British Hard rock scene, WRAITH had an illustrious and successful career playing capacity crowds worldwide and even having LEMMY KILLMEISTER (Motorhead) singing backing vocals on the debut album “Danger Calling”, until they split in 1998. Due to the popular demand of fans WRAITH are back, reformed and ready to celebrate the 25th year of their birth. Bigger, Harder, Heavier and tighter than ever before! The signature duel guitar sound and major riffs will continue the style WRAITH has become acclaimed for; in the newly recorded material in 2012. From the beginning WRAITH were supported by the best in the Industry, the first EP and debut album “DANGER CALLING” being produced by GUY BIDMEAD (Whitesnake/Motorhead), mixed by PETE WAY (UFO) and BRIAN ROBERTSON (Thin Lizzy). The backing vocals being sung by none other than Mr LEMMY KILLMEISTER (Hawkwind/Motorhead). PETE WAY (UFO) is co-writer on ‘Under The Hammer‘ on Wraith ‘Revelation’ Out in August 2017. The next release “Riot” produced by MARK BRUCE (Black Sabbath/Magnum) saw WRAITH’S popularity spread to Europe and Japan, followed by the third critically acclaimed album “Schizophrenia” charting worldwide. The band played to capacity crowds and toured with artists such as UFO, LEGS DIAMOND, WOLFSBANE, MAMAS BOYS, GRIM REAPER, WRATHCHILD, MARSHALL LAW, SAXON, and MOTORHEAD. Unfortunately the band parted ways on the pinnacle of their career, and went off to do solo projects…or buy bars in Spain! Notably Gregg Russell accepted Bass duties for TIGERTAILZ in this period. Gregg and Myke also worked on the 2007 album “Evolution” as a three man WRAITH project with good friend and session drummer John “ the machine “ Rowland. The nick-name was given to him by studio guys who he never failed to amaze with his timing skills. John unfortunately lost a hard fought battle with Cancer in 2010. Evolution uniquely features a narrative by Sci-fi writer ARTHUR C CLARKE CBE, which he wrote especially for the album, and was the last project he worked on before his death. Supporting English rock band UFO during the 1990s. D-Rok was a British hard rock band notable for its Warhammer 40,000-influenced lyrics. At the beginning of the 1990s, Games Workshop began to diversify its activity, including combining its game world with music. As well as collaborating with death metal band Bolt Thrower, whose Warhammer 40,000-themed album Realm of Chaos was released on Earache. Games Workshop set up their own label, Warhammer Records, signing hard-rock acts such as Wraith and D-Rok. In 1991 the band released its only album, Oblivion. The songs have the common theme of the universe in Warhammer 40,000 and the inlay reflected this by including black and white illustrations from Games Workshop’s extensive portfolio of paintings next to the lyrics for each song. The cover, which originally appeared as the box art for the original Epic Space Marine tabletop game, was painted by artist Jim Burns, and has subsequently been used on the cover of the Black Library collection of short stories named “Let the Galaxy Burn.” The band undertook a lengthy club tour to promote the record and secured a support slot with UFO and Wraith.
