ROCK LEGEND NEWS REVIEW - PRAIRIE WHISKEY

Albert J. Lariviere WRITTEN BY LONDA R. MARKS | JUNE 1, 2018

“Missin You” hits hard!

This song is ‘In Your Face Rebel Rock!’ “Missin’ You,” is melodic, provocative and well structured; speaking of hits, “Missin’ You” is a hit! Albert J. Lariviere is a genuinely talented artist with unique, seductive vocals. Guitarist Sam Smith’s dimensional rock style is intuitive to Albert’s emotions and compliments him with a sultry tone. The bass and drums are solid foundation for their arsenal of hit songs and combined, the band executes heart and passion with pure rebel style and radical perfection.

21 JUNE 2018 | PETE WAY OFFICIAL UPDATE Hey guys! A bit of a news update for you... I’m planning some joint Pete Way / Waysted live shows. Worldwide dates for 2019 are currently being worked out with promoters for joint Pete Way / Waysted shows that will tie in with the release of my long awaited solo album. There will also be a brand new Waysted album! I’ve been in regular contact on a daily basis with Paul Chapman and we plan to start working on a new

Waysted album imminently. Think “Save Your Prayers” 2. Waysted will have a very special guest singer of which I haven’t actually asked him yet. If you can guess who i’m going to ask, you and your lovely wife could win a free photo session with the legendary International Rock Royalty Photographer “Ross (rude) Halfin.” Clue... His name begins with the letter “J” & he supports Sheffield United. He is the master of vocal melodies so “Pour some sugar on me,” “1 lump or 2.” He’s sometimes known to close friends as “Our Jo” or “Oscar Wilde.”

Update!

I’m tracking the final 4 vocals needed to finish my long awaited solo album in the next couple of weeks. Thanks for your patience guys xxx. My doctor says that I’m doing good but to please hurry up and finish off the solo album as the medical bills need paying. :) Mike Clink (Gun’s N’ Roses producer) & my long term friend & associate Jason Poole are currently finalising the solo album. In the meantime if Slash wouldn’t mind giving up his day job with Gun’s N’ Roses I’d love to get him involved. I know

Slash has a kind heart & Duff inspires me to stay on track! I will be paying tribute to some of my close friends & rock heroes that have sadly passed at my shows and we can all singalong and raise a toast to them! I promise I will be sober & no drugs will be in my system! This really matters to me as do you the fans! Coming to rock ya 2019, It’s only Rock N’ Roll but we like it!!! Love Pete xxx

A Statement From Phil Mogg of UFO Phil Mogg has confirmed that next year’s 50th anniversary tour with UFO will be his last as the frontman of the long-running hard rock band. Consequently, it seems almost certain that at that point they will cease to exist. UFO were formed in London in 1969 and Mogg is their only ever-present member, performing on all of the group’s 22 studio albums. “This decision has been a long time coming, I’ve considered stepping down at the end of UFO’s previous two tours,” Mogg explains. “I don’t want to call this a farewell tour as I hate that word, but next year’s gigs will represent my final tap-dancing appearances with the band. “2019 marks UFO’s 50th anniversary, so the timing feels right,” he continues. “There will be a final tour of the UK and we will also play some shows in selected other cities that the band has a strong connection with. But outside of the UK this won’t be a long tour. Being out on the

road isn’t always tremendously luxurious and although the playing is as great as it ever was, the stuff that surrounds it becomes very tiresome. I always told myself that when I reached that stage I would step down, and that’s what I’m going to do. This is the right time for me to quit.” Mogg turned 70 back in April and although his voice remains strong, he admits that age played its part in his conclusion. “I’m a big reader of obituaries, and my finger always goes down to: ‘I wonder how old they were…’,” he chuckles. “The last few years have been tough, losing Lemmy was awful and I was sad that Jimmy Bain passed on a cruise ship. That distressed me quite a lot.” While many veteran bands in such a position simply cease playing live and continue to record, UFO will no longer be releasing new music. Last year’s covers collection ‘The Salentino Cuts’ is set to become a signing-off point, though Mogg insists that however unlikely the prospect might seem – the singer is a lone strand of consistency throughout a 50-year history – he would have no problem with UFO continuing with a replacement. The band’s current line-up – completed by keyboard player/second guitarist Paul Raymond, guitarist Vinnie Moore, drummer Andy Parker and bassist Rob De Luca – have of course been informed of Mogg’s decision. “I’ve told the guys that this is how it is,” he says. “They know it’s my time to go and they know that they can do whatever they want to do without me but I don’t want to play live or make records anymore, though having said that I might go on and do an album of my own. I’ll have to see how I feel about that.”

G SAYS:

sion has ng time ve contepping he end previous ,” Mogg “I don’t all this l tour as t word, year’s gigs sent my dancing ces with ”

Of course UFO have either split up, retired or gone on hiatus several times before but Mogg is keen to make the distinction that next year’s dates don’t just mark the end of his touring commitments with UFO – for Phil, there will be no further concerts of any kind. “For me, this is the end of my stint with UFO,” he clarifies. “This is a line in the sand. I’m suggesting we call the tour ‘Last Orders’, though I also like ‘The Bar Is Closing’. I’m also tempted to name it ‘The Drinks Are On Parker’,” he chuckles, referring to long-suffering sticksman Andy Parker. You’ll have gathered that Mogg is not about to slash his wrists anytime soon. Of course he is sad that the finishing line is now within sight but has had sufficient time to live with and process such a massive personal decision. “Maybe the best word to use is ‘bittersweet’,” he concludes. “But my time has arrived and all that remains is to make sure that we have a good tour.”

Effort to Commemorate The Warehouse Gears Up Written by: Rob Masson, Reporter

It was considered one of the great rock concert venues in the country, and it used to sit right on the New Orleans riverfront. The Warehouse was the last place where Jim Morrison and The Doors ever performed; the Allman Brothers were considered the house band. And now a local man is trying to preserve its memory in stone. When it comes to lovers of The Warehouse, few can top Bobby Wahl. “Jim Morrison’s last concert was at The Warehouse. Grand Funk’s “American Band” -- the lyrics were written at The Warehouse,” says Wahl. The Warehouse, located at 1820 Tchoupitoulas Street, was the main venue for rock music in New Orleans in the 1970s. Concert posters from the early 1970s printed the name as “a warehouse”. It was founded by the partners in Beaver Productions. The venue had an estimated capacity of 3,500. It opened with a triple bill of The Flock, Fleetwood Mac and the headlining Grateful Dead on January 30, 1970. The members of the Grateful Dead were arrested on the venue’s opening weekend for drug possession when police raided their hotel rooms. The incident was immortalized in the band’s song “Truckin’,” with the lines “busted down on Bourbon Street, set up like a bowling pin.” On February 1, there was a “Bread for the Dead” concert to raise money

The Allman Brothers Band played many celebrated shows at the venue. Jim Morrison’s last concert with The Doors was at The Warehouse on December 12, 1970. The concert included the second and final performance of “Riders on the Storm”. An early iteration of Kansas (now known to fans as “Kansas I”) opened the show and sat in with The Doors. ZZ Top’s live recording of “Jailhouse Rock” at The Warehouse was included on Fandango! (1975). Talking Heads performed the last show at the venue on September 10, 1982. It was ultimately demolished in April 1989. Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Warehouse_(New_Orleans)

Interview With

DAVID BYRON 1979 “Don’t like the word Heavy Metal ‘cause I don’t really know what it means and I certainly don’t think it’s related to anything I’ve ever been involved in at all. Because, I mean, Heep, we just had songs and we played them loudly.”

VOCALIST

DAVID BYRON David Garrick (29 January 1947 – 28 February 1985), better known by his stage name David Byron was a British singer and songwriter, best known in the early 1970s as the lead vocalist with the rock band Uriah Heep and recognized for his charismatic stage presence and his operatic voice. Danish heavy metal vocalist King Diamond cites Byron as his favorite vocalist of all time. Early life 1967–1969 From mid-60s to early 70s David Byron did session work for a company called Avenue Recordings, singing lead and backing vocals (occasionally along with Mick Box on guitar and Paul Newton on bass). These were cover versions of Top 20 hits and were released on EPs & LPs. His first venture into professional music was with an Epping-based semi-pro band called The Stalkers who also featured guitarist Mick Box. Byron and Box worked well together and teamed up to form the band Spice which also featured Paul Newton on bass and Alex Napier on drums. The band gigged extensively locally under the management of Paul Newton’s father and they secured a recording deal with United Artists who issued the band’s one and only single “What About The Music/In Love” (UP 2246), copies of which now fetch around $50 to $100 on the collectors market. He was the lead vocalist for Spice (1967–1969). Deciding that the Spice sound would require keyboards, they recruited keyboardist/guitarist/singer/songwriter Ken Hensley, who was Paul Newton’s bandmate in The Gods. The band rehearsed and played diligently and during this time Bron redubbed the band Uriah Heep from the Charles Dickens classic David Copperfield. Shortly afterward the band’s career really took off, first in Germany, Britain and finally the States. In 1971 David also appeared on two LPs by John Schroeder.

Uriah Heep classic line-up members in 1973 Lee Kerslake – drums, vocals , David Byron – vocals Gary Thain – bass guitar, vocals, Mick Box – guitar, vocals, Ken Hensley – keyboards, guitar, vocals Spice were a British pop rock and rhythm and blues band featuring David Byron (vocals), Mick Box (guitar), Paul Newton (bass guitar), Alex Napier (drums) and Colin Wood (keyboards). (Napier was a replacement for drummer Nigel Pegrum; Pegrum would later join folk rock stalwarts Steeleye Span). In late 1969, organist Ken Hensley, formerly of The Gods and Toe Fat joined. The band’s last concert was on 21 February 1970 at St Mary’s College in Twickenham, supporting Deep Purple - the band changed its name to Uriah Heep shortly after. The first concert as Uriah Heep was on 20 March at the Technical College in Salisbury.

DISCOGRAPHY Spice released one single, “What About The Music” (b/w “In Love”) in 1968, eventually transforming into Uriah Heep during the recording of their first full-length album. Songs recorded under the Spice name and line-up have surfaced on: The Lansdowne Tapes (compilation of recordings by Spice, and outtakes from the first three Uriah Heep albums) - Recorded 1968-1971, released 1994 A Time of Revelation (four-disc anthology of Uriah Heep material, including recordings by Spice) - Recorded 1968-1995, released 1996 Spice recordings on these compilations consisted of “Astranaza”, “Born In A Trunk” (vocal and instrumental versions), “Celebrate”, “I Want You Babe”, “In Love”, “Magic Lantern”, “Schoolgirl”, and “What About The Music”. Additionally, two of the songs released on the first Uriah Heep album were recorded by the Spice line-up before Hensley’s inclusion, with Colin Wood appearing on keyboards (“Come Away Melinda” and “Wake Up (Set Your Sights)”). Ken Hensley talks about his relationship with David Byron at Frankie´s Pub in Nitra, Slovakia 4th Feb 2012

Lee Kerslake, David Byron and Ken Hensley

“What was the relationship like with you and David?”

The professional relationship was fantastic because David was the most fantastic interpreter of my lyrics. I used to write songs for David. I knew which words he liked to sing and which notes he liked to sing. And, he took the songs and he really brought them to life. I ac-

tually still think about that when I am writing songs now. We were not friends. I wasn’t friends with anyone in the band outside of the band; nothing at all in common outside of the music. But, I didn’t have a relationship with anyone outside of the band. My relationship with David and everyone else was mainly a professional one. —Ken Hensley

Keef Hartley Band (Gary Thain) Seventy-Second Brave Listen to Gary ‘s amazing vocals: “You Say You’re Together Now” Released: 1972 Label: Deram Gary Thain (15 May 1948 – 8 December 1975) Gary Thain is a bassist from Christchurch, New Zealand. In his hometown he was the first musician to own an electric bass at age 13. At age 15 he quit school and became a professional musician. With his older brother he founded the band The Strangers, one year later Peter Dawkins joined. The band had two top-hits in New Zealand; one written by Gary. The band broke up and Gary became a session musician. But when Peter asked him to join him and to come to England, Gary was thrilled. Born in Timaru, New Zealand, Dawkins started in the music business as a drummer in his teens; he toured Europe in the mid-1960s with his freakbeat bands Me And The Others, and The New Nadir. In London they jammed at The Speakeasy with Jimi Hendrix, which eventually led to the recording of a lost 7” acetate for the UK Polydor label. AUDIO CULTURE Gary Thain Profile By Keith Newman

Known for his deft slap and finger picking style and mesmerising stage presence, Christchurch bassist Gary Thain recorded five albums each with the Keef Hartley Band and British rockers Uriah Heep at the height of their career. He was playing with Christchurch band Me and The Others when they hit the London scene early in 1966 and soon after began playing clubs across the United Kingdom. Within 18 months fellow band members Paul Muggleston (keyboards and rhythm guitar) and Dave Chapman (lead guitar) returned to New Zealand

in the midst of a strenuous German tour of nightclubs and naval bases. That resulted in Thain and drummer Peter Dawkins forming a replacement unit with Ed Carter from San Francisco on guitar called New Nadir to pick up on their gigs. Dawkins headed back to London to explore new directions, filled in with various bands, including gigs at The Speakeasy in London, before heading home to New Zealand where his career shifted to music production. His replacement in New Nadir was San Francisco drummer Mike Kowalski. He worked with EMI in both New Zealand and Australia, helping create a string of hits for The Fourmyula, MiSex and others and then on to Austra-

lia where he worked with artists including Russell Morris, Air Supply, Australian Crawl and Dragon.

cordings for Champion Jack Dupree, the New Orleans boogie-woogie bluesman who’d been living in Europe since 1958.

Back in London, New Nadir picked up work on the blues circuit. They were regulars at top clubs including The Speakeasy, allegedly sharing the stage with Jimi Hendrix on several occasions.

Thain was again seen in prestigious company backing American singer, playwright and actress Martha Velez on her Friends and Angels album. Alongside Hartley and Thain were luminaries Eric Clapton, Paul Kossoff and Stan Webb on guitars, Brian Auger and Christine McVee on keyboards and Hendrix’s drummer Mitch Mitchell.

Session Player Demands By the time Carter and Kowalski left to become the rhythm section of The Beach Boys early in 1969, Gary Thain was already in demand as a session player. In February under the name Wallace Tring, the waif-like bassist played alongside notables Mick Taylor, Aynsley Dunbar and drummer Keef Hartley on re-

Next we hear of Thain he’s a full-blooded member of The Keef Hartley Band, which had just signed to Decca. Fresh from John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, Hartley had pulled together a big brassy jazz-rock unit with singer-guitarist Miller Anderson. Thain, says Hartley in the liner notes of their first album, is “a real

charts for 11 weeks.

The Keef Hartley Band was one of the few British units to appear at Woodstock where they were compared favourably with Blood Sweat and Tears. They released five albums and a string of singles between 1969 and 1973, all featuring Thain.

Only six months later another LP, The Magician’s Birthday, hit the streets. The band was in serious demand and management were pushing them hard.

The Keef Hartley Band had toured with Uriah Heep in 1971 and in the middle of their American tour in February 1972, Thain received a phone call from keyboardist Ken Hensley asking him to replace Mark Clark. Dickens Of a Job The band, with its heavy rhythm section, driving guitar riffs and multitracked vocal harmonies, adopted its name in 1970, the 100th birthday of Charles Dickens. Uriah Heep, taken from a David Copperfield character, seemed to sit well alongside the metal superstars of the time: Deep Purple and Black Sabbath. Mick Box on guitar and singer David Byron had been joined by Hensley while recording their debut album Very ‘eavy Very ‘umble. The follow up album Salisbury further cemented their reputation as rock heavyweights. After their 1971 album Look at Yourself, with its trademark mirror cover, the band settled on drummer Lee Kerslake and with Gary Thain on board a few months later, they had their dream rhythm section. According to the liner notes for Demons & Wizards, in progress when Thain joined, the band was now “completed’’ and within four months the new album was on the streets. The singles ‘The Wizard’, which Clark played on, and ‘Easy Living’, the first outing for Gary Thain, gave the international success they’d been courting. The album stayed on the British album

An Insane Pace Uriah Heep guitarist Mick Box told me by phone from London that the pace was insane and band members thought they were living the high life; limousines to ferry them wherever they wanted and a rider for crates of top shelf booze to be delivered backstage at all concerts. Thain’s migration from happy pills to harder drugs went unnoticed until his fellow musicians became aware he was moving into a different headspace. “Initially you had no idea he was doing anything then hello, something’s adrift here.” Uriah Heep played three German shows in 1973 without Box who was ill. At the end of those shows bass player Thain was literally on his hands and knees stating he would never again perform under those circumstances. When Box returned to the fold he witnessed the toll it had taken on his friend. “It was just go, go, push, push, where do we go next, what do we record next. It was a gruelling schedule and at one point Gary actually shouted at management. ‘I’m not going any further … I need to go back to New Zealand and see my family’. He had to kick up such a fuss until people listened to him.” During his brief visit home Thain caught up with family and friends, was interviewed on the regional TV station in Christchurch, visited his old teacher at Xavier College and turned up at Mojos nightclub where he showed Dick Watson from Chapta the bass lines from Demons & Wizards. He also caught up with former bandmate Paul Muggleston

who was doing a midnight to dawn DJ shift on local radio. In July 1973, Thain was back with Uriah Heep as they headed to Chateau d’Heronville in France to record the Sweet Freedom album, which ultimately peaked at No.18 on the UK charts. The single ‘Stealin’’, still considered a classic today, was banned in the US; the lyric “I done the rancher’s daughter” was just a little too raunchy. That was the least of their problems. Hensley’s cocaine addiction, singer Byron’s alcoholism and Gary Thain’s heroin habit were a recipe for disaster, particularly when combined with increasing pressure to perform. “It was like nine months on the road, three months in the studio … it was chaotic with little time for family life or resting. Nobody can work at that level for long … that was a real mistake by management,” says Box. The band recorded Wonderworld at Munich’s Musicland Studios in January 1974 where internal tensions escalated along with serious concerns about Thain’s health.

Shocking Intervention During their US tour to support Wonderworld, Uriah Heep were playing the Moody Coliseum in Dallas Texas, on September 15, 1974, when something went terribly wrong. Witnesses say the band was in full swing with Box hitting his stride with the heavy guitar break of ‘July Morning’ when the bottom end suddenly dropped from the sound. Thain, normally very active on stage, stood deathly quiet and then began jerking wildly. Within seconds he fell face first on top of his bass guitar. Blue smoke began pouring out of his amplifier and the band stopped mid-song. Paramedics were called but by the time they arrived Thain was back on his feet, scratching his head as if to suggest he was OK … but he wasn’t. He had severe electrical burns and needed to be hospitalised. Box says Thain never fully recovered. “It was a dreadful, terrible thing and everyone was concerned for him. One grievance Gary had with management is that

he was working hard, doing everything they wanted and they just seemed to want more. They didn’t once ring him to see how he was.” Thain tried to pick up where he left off but his addiction and his darkening attitude toward management meant he was increasingly unreliable and erratic. He was sacked in January 1975. “There was an element of inevitability about it. We just carried on … but it was never going to be the same,” says Box. The band were on the road with a replacement bass player when they heard the news that Gary Thain had died from an accidental drug overdose in the bathtub of his Norwood Green home on December 8, 1975. Box was devastated but dismisses any hint of suicide. “Gary was too strong minded to have gone down that route.” The coroner’s term was misadventure. Over three years Gary Thain played 140

gigs around the world and recorded five Uriah Heep albums (four studio, one live). He was a New Zealand legend, having fulfilled his wildest dreams but at the age of 27 he was a rock and roll casualty. Uriah Heep founding member and guitarist Mick Box considers Gary Thain to have been one of the top three bass players in the world during his time with the iconic five-piece British rock unit. His old New Zealand bandmate Paul Muggleston agrees, saying Thain was “one of the greatest bass players the rock world has ever seen.”

Anders Olow 6 months ago Actually Keef Hartley and the band are all innocent - and fooled. Their greedy manager demanded more money for the filming rights than any of the other legendary bands without the band knowing about it. The Woodstock producers said no - hence no film from the performance. A disgrace.

Keef Hartley Band at Bath 6-27-70, AM “This band were, according to the Bath programme, not in Big Band format at this date. Nevertheless the small line-up played their buns off. I well remember that this was the first great set of the day and Keef and the boys gave it some wellie and were very well recieved by the audience, who were thirsting for some decent music after waiting around for some hours for any music to happen. Unfortunately the recording that we know of that existed of the bands performance was either wiped or deteriorated beyond repair.

Greyhound Stadium, Portsmouth “Pop Day ‘70; a Progressive Extravaganza.” The master of ceremonies was Mike Raven, who introduced each band. Melody Maker subsequently reviewed the event poorly, claiming it had “a turn-out of about 300 people in a stadium capable of holding 10,000 and a house PA system that was unbelievably bad.” Greyhound Stadium was a dog-racing track.

Gary remembered by Uriah Heep guitarist Mick Box: “Gary Thain was a huge talent, and an inspiration to bass players around the world. His walking bass lines were tremendous, and a big part of Uriah Heep’s success. Gary was a huge personality, and a tremendous guy to work with. He had a wicked sense of humour, and his love of music shone through in everything he did. I shared a room with Gary all over the world, and some of these times were the best I ever had out on the road. He is sadly and badly missed, both as a person and a musician”. Gary remembered by Uriah Heep band leader Ken Hensley: “For me, Gary was a very special person in every way. He was by far the best musician in that Heep line-up and I know from my later experiences that he is still revered by many modern rock bass players. His playing was so melodic and lyrical and quite revolutionary for that time. Heep never really recovered from losing him. We replaced one great bass player with another, but something was definitely missing and it was the “magic” that Gary had given us for those few short years”. From the Uriah Heep ‘74 Tour book (Australia): “Gary Thain is probably the least open member of the band, his manner is sometimes abrupt and he’ll do little to aid the recipients discomfort, but get to know him and you realize that most of it is good natured enough. In conversation he pauses and underlines statements thoughtfully, deliberating each sentence. Onstage too he appears to be the least excited, prowling straight faced between Ken (Hensley) and Lee (Kerslake). His bass playing has never been overlooked in the make-up of Heep, it’s distinct and positive, combining with Kerslake’s stickwork into a forceful rhythm section” Allan H (Bass Builder and Musician): “Yep, Gary is my first and main rock influence on bass. It’s a damned shame that there’s so little recorded of him to listen to. I would have loved to hear him on stage now duking it out with Sheehan or Trujillo. He’d smoke em. I first heard him on the Live double album. (Note: He is

talking about the double Live Album called “Uriah Heep Live 1973”). That recording was either engineered by a former bass player or Gary himself slipped the guy a extra few quid to pump him up in that mix because it’s one of the best “out front” presentations of rock bass ever recorded in my humble opinion. Kenneth William David Hensley (born 24 August 1945) is an English singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer, best known for his work with Uriah Heep during the 1970s. He wrote or co-wrote the majority of Uriah Heep’s songs during this period, including the hit singles “Lady in Black” (on which he sang lead vocals), “Easy Livin’” and “Stealin’”, as well as “Look at Yourself”, on which he also sang lead vocals, and “Free Me”. http://www.ken-hensley.com/

it’s not my drumming on that album. I have never taken credit for that recording and have always given Lee Kerslake, whenever asked or interviewed, the credit he rightly deserves.”

LEE KERSLAKE Lee Kerslake (born 16 April 1947 in Winton, Bournemouth, Dorset, England) is an English musician, best known as the longtime drummer and backing vocalist for the rock band Uriah Heep and for his work with Ozzy Osbourne in the early 1980s. In the late 1960s to early 1970s, Kerslake played with a band called the Gods, releasing three albums. He then joined Uriah Heep in November 1971, left the band in October 1979, and rejoined them in April 1982. Among other efforts, he also played on David Byron’s and Ken Hensley’s solo albums. In 1980, Kerslake met ex-Black Sabbath vocalist Ozzy Osbourne and they would soon form the band Blizzard of Ozz with bassist Bob Daisley and guitarist Randy Rhoads, though the band soon became an Ozzy Osbourne solo project. Kerslake’s work can be heard on Osbourne’s first two solo albums, Blizzard of Ozz and Diary of a Madman. On the Diary of a Madman notes, Kerslake and bassist Bob Daisley were not credited, with drummer Tommy Aldridge and bassist Rudy Sarzo instead receiving credit. Aldridge has stated of the Diary of a Madman album, “I think it’s pretty obvious that

In 1998, Kerslake and Daisley filed suit against Ozzy Osbourne and his manager/ wife Sharon Osbourne, seeking royalties and songwriting credits for their contributions to the Blizzard of Ozz and Diary of a Madman albums. As a result, the 2002 reissues of both albums removed Kerslake and Daisley’s performances, replacing them with newly recorded tracks by bassist Robert Trujillo and drummer Mike Bordin (when the albums were again reissued in 2011, the original bass and drum tracks were restored). Kerslake is unsure why the Osbourne camp has treated him so negatively. “The only thing I could ever recall was once Ozzy had asked me to speak to her on his behalf regarding the two shows in New York in one night as Ozzy said ‘I can’t do two shows in one night - not with my voice!’ He told me to tell her. I did as he said. I would have died for Ozzy as we were a band and I loved him as such. Because I broke the news to her, she’s hated my guts”, he recalled in 2011. In 2003 Kerslake became involved in ‘super group’ Living Loud, a hard rock project also featuring bassist Bob Daisley (formerly of Uriah Heep, Gary Moore, the Ozzy Osbourne band, Rainbow and Black Sabbath), guitarist Steve Morse (Dixie Dregs, the Steve Morse Band, Kansas, Deep Purple) and singer Jimmy Barnes. Keyboards player Don Airey (ex-Rainbow, currently with Deep Purple) made a guest appearance. The group released a debut self-titled CD, featuring covers of several Daisley/Kerslake penned Ozzy Osbourne tracks. In 2003, Kerslake and Daisley’s lawsuit was dismissed by the United States District Court in Los Angeles. This dismissal was upheld by the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Lee now performs with his own band the “Lee Kerslake Band”, guests with various bands and regularly joins ex-Heep members Ken Hensley and Paul Newton in “Uriah Heep Legends”

An excerpt of a private letter David Byron wrote to a Mr. Trosley around the time he started up the Byron Band ( 1981): “I don’t really know much about Lawton and Sloman, cause when I got out of Heep I wanted to remember the good parts and f***k the rest. Everybody over the years has got fired or whatever, only Mick is left and even I don’t know whether he is going to try again. I’m very good friends with all of them now but it took a while”.......

Byron got together with wonderkid guitarist Robin George and formed The Byron Band. They were signed to Creole Records and debuted with the single “Every Inch Of The Way/Routine” (CR 8). This was followed by the single “Never Say Die/Tired Eyes” (CR 12) before the release of the 1981 LP “On The Rocks” (CRX 2). But like his previous band Rough Diamond, neither critical nor commercial acclaim was forthcoming.

Sadly, Byron never recovered from his alcoholism which steadily grew worse and after one too many unprofessional stage disappointments (he collapsed drunk on stage at the Marquee shortly into his set) and he was pretty much left washed up. Alcohol eventually overcame David Byron. He was found dead on February 28th 1985 and like all great stars of his magnitude, he was taken from us too soon. However, he left behind a vast catalog of material of both Uriah Heep and his own solo material which will ensure that the memory and music of David Byron lives on.

URIAH HEEP

One of the most impressive bands in rock history included: David Byron, Mick Box, Ken Hensley, Lee Kerslake & Gary Thain; a miraculous artistic chemistry. Circus Magazine presented not only Uriah Heep but those rock gods that shaped our lives during the profoundly impassioned 70s; that intensely creative era, that flash of starlight! And, London, a major settlement for two millennia founded by the Romans* in AD 43, who named it Londinium at its bridge over the River Thames turned the city into a road nexus and major port eventually becoming Great Britain’s igniting point for the 70s Rock phenomena leading the way. The following pages are excerpts from Circus August 1974 Great Britain Issue Featuring Uriah Heep’s ‘Wonderwrold’ The LP Behind Their Fatal Charm. * Hadrian’s Wall, also called the Roman Wall, Picts’ Wall, near Newcastle upon Tyne in north east England, about 280 miles from London, was a defensive fortification in the Roman province of Britannia, and begun in AD 122. It’s a land of fierce rebels that go way back. Publius Aelius Hadrianus Augustus; (24 January 76 – 10 July 138 AD), builder of Hadrian’s Wall, was Roman emperor from 117 to 138. His father was of senatorial rank, and was a first cousin of the emperor Trajan.

RIAH HEEP is a fictional character created by Charles Dickens in his novel David Copperfield. Heep is one of the main antagonists of the novel. His character is notable for his cloying humility, obsequiousness, and insincerity, making frequent references to his own “’umbleness”. His name has become synonymous with sycophancy.

The band’s origins go back to 1967 when 19-year-old guitarist Mick Box formed a band in Brentwood called Hogwash, which began playing in local clubs and pubs. When the band’s singer left, drummer Roger Penlington suggested his cousin David Garrick (who knew the band) as a replacement. Box and Garrick instantly formed a songwriting partnership and, having higher musical aspirations than their colleagues, decided to give up their day jobs and go professional. They set up a new band called Spice; it was then that David Garrick changed his surname to Byron. Drummer Alex Napier (born 1947 in Glasgow, Strathclyde, Scotland) joined, having answered a music paper ad; bassist Paul Newton of the Gods completed the line-up. From the very beginning, Spice avoided playing covers and, according to Box, always strove “...to do something original.” Managed initially by Newton’s father, the band climbed their way up to The Marquee level, then got signed by Gerry Bron (the Hit Record Productions Ltd.’s boss) who saw the band at the Blues Loft club in High Wycombe. “I thought they were a band I could develop and I took them on that basis,” remembered Bron later. He became the band’s manager and signed them to Vertigo Records, the newly formed Philips label. The four-piece found themselves booked into the Lansdowne Studios in London, still under the name of Spice. Then the name was changed to that of the well-known character from David Copperfield, Uriah Heep (for, according to biographer Kirk Blows, “Dickens’ name being everywhere around Christmas ‘69 due to it being the hundredth anniversary of his death”). According to Dave Ling’s 2001 autobiography of the band, Wizards and Demons, The Uriah Heep Story, though the “Uriah Heep” moniker was chosen in December 1969, the band continued to play gigs as “Spice” until Ken Hensley joined in February 1970. Uriah Heep then decided to widen the sound. SOURCE: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uriah_ Heep_(band)

Sloman’s first band of note were local Cardiff heroes Trapper before he joined Lone Star in time for their 1977 sophomore album, Firing on All Six, supported by a Reading Festival appearance on August 26, 1977, a headline tour, and another tour with Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush later that same year. Lone Star disbanded before a third album could be completed as guitarist Paul Chapman left to take

Michael Schenker’s spot in UFO. 4 songs from a BBC broadcast with Sloman, recorded September 29, 1977 at Queen Mary College, were released in 1994 as part of BBC Radio One Live In Concert. Sloman and Lone Star drummer Dixie Lee, along with Trapper bassist Pino Paladino, would join forces in Canadian outfit Pulsar with former Ian Thomas Band guitarist Dave Cooper and keyboardist Gregg Dechert. It would prove to be a short lived union as Sloman got the call from the Uriah Heep camp in 1979 to take over for John Lawton. Sloman recorded the controver-

sial Conquest album with the group but departed in 1981, citing “musical differences.” An uncredited Sloman also played keyboards on UFO’s 1981 album The Wild, the Willing and the Innocent. After Uriah Heep, he formed the band John Sloman’s Badlands and showcased at the Marquee Club but failed to procure a record deal. Badlands featured former Trapper drummer John Munro, Whitesnake’s Neil Murray on bass, and guitarist John Sykes prior to his joining Thin Lizzy. Sloman

and Murray would both join Gary Moore’s band which resulted in the Rockin’ Every Night: Live in Japan album. John Sloman replaced John Lawton in late 1979. He recorded one album and one single. John Sloman (URIAH HEEP, 1979)

URIAH HEEP If Budgie inspired the no-nonsense bombast of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal in the ‘80s, then Uriah Heep informed it with their overall dynamic sonic sweep. Although the band was approaching major cheese zones by the time Raven and Saxon were breaking ground in the country, there’s no doubt that plenty of shit was cribbed from the band’s first six (or so) albums. Not only that, but the band was behind the formation of Bronze Records, the independent label that would go on to put out such seminal metal albums as Motörhead’s Ace of Spades and Girlschool’s Hit and Run. How much more influential can you get? Not much, methinks. BUDGIE The non-saga of Wales’ Budgie and their place in the grand scheme of heavy music in the U.K. has always stuck in the collective craw of heavy music fans in the know. Although they swam in the same murky major label waters as Sabbath, Zeppelin and many others, they never seemed to gain the same amount of respect. While taking in that mighty initial quadrumvirate of their 1971 self-titled debut, Squawk (1972) Never Turn Your Back on a Friend (1973) and In for the Kill! (1974) in the basement the other

night, it became painfully obvious as to why this happenstance occurred: Budgie were too heavy, too raw, too uncomplicated, too unsexy and — most importantly — too unconcerned about adhering to what anyone’s idea of what a rock band should have been in that day and age of pomp and posturing. With their boisterous sound and denim-clad demeanor, the band held more influence on what would happen in the development of metal in their country in the next decade than any frilly shirt-sporting rock god ever could. UFO Despite being best known for propelling Michael Schenker into guitar god status, UFO had already fully entrenched themselves in the soil of what was to be British heavy metal prior to all that. Their first two pre-Schenker LPs are some molar-moving affairs that truly capture them as the heads-down, drug-fueled, no-frills hard rock band they were prior to the success they would enjoy later in the ‘70s. Even after losing the golden goose of Schenker, they stood toe-to-toe with the units they inspired on tour, all the while putting out great records well into the ‘80s such as No Place to Run and The Wild, the Willing and the Innocent.

Alexander James Harvey (5 February 1935 – 4 February 1982) was a Scottish rock and blues musician. Although his career spanned almost three decades, he is best remembered as the frontman of The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, with whom he built a reputation as an exciting live performer during the era of glam rock in the 1970s. The Old Grey Whistle Test Usually abbreviated to Whistle Test or OGWT, was a British television music show. It was commissioned by David Attenborough and aired on BBC2 from 1971 to 1988. It took over the BBC2 late night slot from Disco 2, which ran between September 1970 and July 1971, while continuing to feature non-chart music. The show was devised by BBC producer Rowan Ayers. The original producer, involved in an executive capacity throughout the show’s entire history, was Michael Appleton. According to presenter Bob Harris, the programme derived its name from a Tin Pan Alley phrase from years before. When they got the first pressing of a record they would play it to people they called the old greys – doormen in grey suits. Any song they could remember and whistle, having heard it just once or twice, had passed the old grey whistle test. On 23 February 2018, a one-off three hour special of The Old Grey Whistle Test was broadcast on BBC Four, hosted by Bob Harris to mark 30 years since the final episode aired. The first host was Richard Williams, features editor of Melody Maker, the music weekly. From 1972, the programme was presented by disc jockey Bob Harris (nicknamed “Whispering Bob Harris”, because of his quiet voice and “laid back” style). He later became notorious among the younger generation for calling the New York Dolls “mock rock’ and left OGWT in 1978. Owing to technical issues during the show’s early years, and the need to ensure performances were controlled, the bands often recorded the instrumental tracks the day before. The vocals were then performed live, “99 percent” of the time. After 1973, the show changed to an entirely live format. The programme hosted many seminal acts of the era, including the first British TV performance of Bob

Whistle Test was also the British television debut of the American glam punk band New York Dolls. Although host Bob Harris derided the group as “mock rock,” comparing them unfavourably to The Rolling Stones, their performance influenced the following punk rock scene such as the Sex Pistols and The Clash as well as alternative bands like R.E.M. and The Smiths and the glam metal scene of the 1980s. Edward ‘Ted’ McKenna (born 10 March 1950 in Lennoxtown, East Dunbartonshire, Scotland), is a Scottish drummer, who has played with bands Tear Gas, The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, Rory Gallagher, The Sensational Party Boys, and The Michael Schenker Group. He also toured with Ian Gillan for a short period in 1990, alongside fellow former SAHB member, bassist Chris Glen. He lectured in Applied Arts at North Glasgow College from 1996–2011. McKenna was educated at St Patrick’s High School, Coatbridge. His studies included Double bass lessons at school, several piano lessons, and a year under Glasgow big band veteran, Lester Penman. He has worked as a bandmember for several artists, including Rory Gallagher from 1978–1981. He additionally worked as a session musician with Greg Lake & Gary Moore in The Greg Lake Band 1980–81; the Michael Schenker Group in 1981–84; Bugatti & Musker, 1982; Ian Gillan; and a solo album for Nazareth singer Dan McCafferty, in 1975. Ted also had his own band after his time in MSG called McKenna’s Gold. Formed at the end of 1986, this band played together for just over two years and featured Charles Bowyer/vocals, Julian Hutson-Saxby/guitar, Alex Bowler/bass and Steve Franklin/keyboards. Julian Hutson-Saxby later played guitar with the reformed Sensational Alex Harvey Band after Zal’s departure in 2008. Ted has reunited with Michael Schenker along with SAHB bassist Chris Glen for Michael Schenker Fest. Michael Schenker Fest is an anniversary line up of all 3 original vocalists from the first 3 MSG albums and in 2016, the band recorded a live concert in Japan and is available to buy now. AC/DC’s Angus Young Was At Center Of Odd All-Star Jam 04-13-2017

Chris Glen

CHRIS GLEN: THE BASS BUSINESS is on sale now via Noisewave, featuring a foreword by Eric Singer of Kiss and introductions by Bill Spooner (The Tubes), Rick Neilsen (Cheap Trick), John Corabi (Dead Daisies), Michael Schenker, Gary Barden, Robin McAulay (Michael Schenker Group), Alex Marco Harvey and Mark Radcliffe. AC/DC’s Angus Young is a legendary guitarist but during an impromptu all-star jam he decided that he wanted to play drums and that set the stage for a performance that the audience and rockers involved will never forget. The unique jam session is just one of the memories that Chris Glen (The Sensational Alex Harvey Band and The Michael Schenker Group) shares in his new book “Chris Glen: The Bass Business.” Ahead of this Friday’s release of the new book, Glen revealed an excerpt that recounts that memorable night when he hit the stage with legendary drummer Cozy Powell, Cheap Trick’s Rick Nielsen and Robin Zander and Angus Young: “MSG [which featured him and Powell at the time] had just finished a tour with Molly Hatchet, and we were about to do Canada with Cheap Trick. Seattle in America is a bit like Crewe in Britain – all trains seem to go through there, and all bands seem to go through there. So we were in this club in Seattle, and Cheap Trick were there, and AC/DC were there too – they had the same management as Michael. Angus Young is a tea drinker now, but I think back then he was still up for anything. So that’s what we were drinking … anything! “We were all sat across six tables and there had been a band playing. The manager of the place said, ‘Come on, some of you guys play a song,’ and Cozy went, ‘Okay, who’s up for it?’ It was really a case of, ‘Who can still stand up?’ “So it was Cozy, me, Rick Nielsen, Robin Zander and Angus. We were just getting up and Angus decided he wanted to play drums, so Cozy said, ‘Right, let’s not play our real instruments!’ I’d already gone to pick up the bass, but Cozy said, ‘No, I’m playing the bass. You play the guitar.’ Rick and Robin were happy because there were keyboards and a microphone. “We did ‘Highway to Hell,’ but the whole thing was a clusterf— ... Angus was trying to show me the chords while we did it. At one point he took my right arm and held it up the guitar neck to do the fingering! “He could hold a beat and Rick was singing, and the bass is just bump-bump-bump, which was no problem for Cozy. But I was f—ing terrible. I remember at the end the crowd went wild – or maybe they were just angry. We said ‘Thank you!’ but we meant ‘Thank you for putting up with us.’ “Common sense prevailed and we didn’t do another song. But by that time, all the girls in the room had found out who we were, so that looked after itself. I just about remember thinking, ‘This is one for the book … ’ and here we are!” The book’s co-author, former Classic Rock news editor Martin Kielty is offering a signed limited-edition hardcover and a signed paperback via his website: http://martinkielty.com/author/chris-glen-bass-business-memoir-book-pre-order-hardback-paperback/

“UFO were a gang though,” we remark. “We were,” says Pete Way. “Right to the end.” By Geoff Barton June 25, 2008 Features | Loudersound | Classic Rock [Excerpts]

“But the space rock thing also helped because we kind of glammed up a little bit for that,” adds Parker. “We didn’t look like one of the crowd and that was important back then.”

UFO appeared on BBC TV’s The Old Grey Whistle Test 1979 “I remember it vaguely,” says Way. “We played Doctor Doctor and something else. But I got banned. I was doing some blow and they weren’t best pleased. I offered the host some coke. It wasn’t Whispering Bob, it was someone else. The zip of my pants broke as well, during the performance…” Listening to those records today is a bizarre experience indeed. Bolton’s guitar fuzzes and drones away aimlessly while Mogg, Way and Parker do their best to stamp their authority. But with tracks such as Treacle People in their repertoire (sample lyric: ‘I moved ’round a bit/ And started seeing people/And the people that I met/Oh, were all covered in treacle’) they were fighting a losing battle. (Treacle People is a Rock Legend News favorite). Nevertheless, there were glimmers of the greatness to come: UFO’s version of the Eddie Cochran hit C’mon Everybody became a firm live favourite, as did a self-penned song with the unlikely title Boogie For George. Additionally, a two-pronged epic called Prince Kajuku/The Coming Of Prince Kajuku was a potent mix of Rush-style fantasy (‘Prince Kajuku’s coming/ Feathers in his hair/Tapping on his juju stick/See you down there’) and cosmically inclined hard blues. The character of the Prince was apparently based on a hippy-dippy UFO roadie who used to shuffle around muttering “peace, man” all the time. Very Neil, very Young Ones. We inform Pete Way that we’ve got all the tracks from Flying – The Early Years 1970-1973 (a UFO compilation released in 2004) on our iPod. “Blimey,” he gasps. “Are you feeling all right? We were quite inventive in those days but I don’t know how good we were. Having said that, when I was in Denmark a couple of years ago I went to King Diamond’s apartment. He’s got skeletons in there and everything’s painted black. But I noticed he had a copy of UFO 1 in his record collection. This Danish guy I was with commented: ‘Of course, all true metal fans have a copy of UFO 1.’” “The really early days I remember quite well – it was so exciting and we were really forging ahead,” says Parker. “It was all silver lamé and hour-long guitar solos. We did the One Hour Space Rock album, which was amazing as we managed to squeeze in 30 minutes of music on each side of a vinyl album. It sounded so quiet. You had to crank it up because there was no volume on there at all. But talk about value for money, mate, when most other bands were putting, like, 16 minutes of music per side.” In October 1971 UFO flew out to play in the Far East. According to a story in Melody Maker: ‘The trek – reported to be worth $15,000 – follows the success of their first album, UFO 1, which has sold 135,000 copies in Japan.’ UFO had thought they were opening for Three Dog Night but ended up topping the bill in front of 23,000 people at Hibiya Park, Tokyo. “It was bizarre,” says Parker. “At the airport we were met by a limo and loads of screaming fans. I remember thinking: ‘Oh my God, we’re these huge stars in Japan.’ “I was 19, 20 years

old,” recalls Way. “Then we came back to Britain and played the Marquee.” The Tokyo show was captured for posterity on UFO Live – and the band certainly put their all into their performance. Just before set-closer Follow You Home the MC bellows: “They’re gonna play one more for ya because his [Bolton’s] fingers are so cut he won’t be able to play for a month! Alright? One more!” And it wasn’t even the summer of ’69… UFO’s music began to change following Bolton’s departure, becoming less out of orbit and more down to earth. “Why did we stop playing space rock? Because Phil stopped taking LSD,” Way says bluntly. “That big fat liar,” Mogg replies, before considering: “Well… there was a bit of that going on at the time because we were playing London’s Roundhouse. They used to have 24-hour gigs there. You’d go in and play in the evening, and you’d come out at about seven o’clock in the morning. Whether it was the following morning or not, who knew? So, yeah… Pete might have a point.” “We just started listening to different types of music,” Way expands. “I went and saw Led Zeppelin at the Marquee when they were The New Yardbirds and I remember thinking: ‘This is great stuff. It’s about time that we [UFO] moved on.’” “We just kind of got our act together,” shrugs Mogg. “We were listening to bands like Free and Lynyrd Skynyrd and admiring the way they combined rock and blues. We reckoned that was the sort of stuff we should be playing. “Whatever the truth I think Bernie was relieved to leave because he thought we were a bit too wild,” says Way. “Apparently David Coverdale once asked him what it was like being a member of UFO and Bernie replied: ‘You would not believe…’” SOURCE: https://www.loudersound.com/features/ufo-we-used-to-take-mandrax-as-if-itwere-aspirin-we-didn-t-care

Guitar Maker Gibson Files For Bankruptcy May 1, 2018 | BLOOMBERG Rosewood regulations slowed down the guitar industry as a whole last year, according to IbisWorld, which tracks the guitar industry. Legendary guitar maker Gibson, whose brands include Les Paul and SG, filed for bankruptcy due to its $500 million debt in the hopes of refocusing on its core guitar-making business. Gibson Brands Inc. filed for bankruptcy protection, with lenders taking control of the iconic American business that’s supplied guitars to B.B. King, Elvis Presley and Pete Townshend. The restructuring will allow the instrument business to “unburden” itself of a consumer-electronics unit that Gibson blamed for its financial woes. Gibson owes as much as $500 million, and lenders will provide a new loan of up to $135 million to keep the company in business, according to court papers.

Failed Diversification Gibson, founded in 1894, sells over 170,000 guitars annually in 80 countries. Its guitars are U.S.-made, with factories in Nashville and Memphis, Tennessee, and Bozeman, Montana. It also sells studio monitors, headphones, turntables and other musical instruments. Units also include the company’s Baldwin Piano business. All told, the music instruments business employs at least 875 people, according to court papers. ‘Music Lifestyle’ Juszkiewicz bought the audio and home entertainment business from Koninklijke Philips NV in June 2014 for $135 million as part of a bid to relaunch Gibson Guitars as Gibson Brands Inc., a “music lifestyle” company. He also bought a line of consumer electronics from Japanese company Onkyo Corp. in his bid for diversification. But the purchases drained cash, and earnings plunged. The company ran out of time for a turnaround as a bond maturity and springing term loan loomed in July. French street artist, Pascal Boyart is taking Bitcoin to the art world. The mural painter known by the moniker ‘PBOY’ is incorporating Bitcoin QR codes in his artworks. This allows him to receive donations from the public in crypto. BITCOIN MEETS ART

The term “struggling artist” is an age-long trope. Not every artist is fortunate enough to have a wealthy patron financing their talents. Even with crowd funded platforms like Ulule and Patreon, it is still difficult for many artists to eke out a living. For Boyart, the solution to the problem has been Bitcoin, the world’s most famous cryptocurrency. I first included a Bitcoin QR code in my work in November

2017. I painted a street art piece of a child asking his father ‘Dad, what is money?’ And I placed a QR code at the side of my signature. I wasn’t sure if someone had done this already, but I wanted to see if people could support street artists with donations. I did it as an homage to Andreas Antonopoulos’ book The Internet of Money. So far, Boyart has received more about 0.11 Bitcoin (approximately $1,000) in donations. The artist describes himself as a crypto enthusiast saying that the creative industry has a lot to benefit from decentralization. According to Boyart, artists can take advantage of the new economic paradigm made possible by Bitcoin technology.

TEENS, SOCIAL MEDIA & TECHNOLOGY 2018 YouTube, Instagram and Snapchat are the most popular online platforms among teens. The ability to advertise world wide at free or very little cost to this demographic. How to do that most effectively can be determined by statistics like these:

@Blockchainlife VC Investor Tim Draper: “Bitcoin will be bigger than the Internet. It’s bigger than the Iron Age, the Renaissance. It’s bigger than the Industrial Revolution. This affects the entire world and it’s going to be affected in a faster and more prevalent way than you ever imagined.” In July 2014, Draper received wide coverage for his purchase at a US Marshals Service auction of seized Bitcoin from the Silk Road marketplace website. Draper’s father, Bill Draper, was an earlier investor in Skye, and DFJ backed Skype in 2004. The company owned 10% of Skype in 2005 when it was sold to eBay for US $4.1 billion. In 2013, Draper launched Draper

French Finance minister, Bruno Le Maire: “I’ve been seized by a sudden passion for Cryptocurrency. It took me a year. Let us show a lot of pedagogy with our fellow citizens to make France the first place of Blockchain & Crypto-active innovation in Europe and for France to be out front on cryptocurrencies.” He doesn’t intend for France to miss what he’s dubbed “the blockchain revolution.” “France has every interest in becoming the first major financial center to propose an ad hoc legislative framework that will allow companies initiating an ICO to demonstrate their seriousness to potential investors.”

Le Maire was quick to point out that the blockchain revolution has the potential to disrupt the banking (including investment funds) and insurance industries as we know them. He warned: “Anticipate them. Let’s not be mere spectators: become actors in this revolution.” He ended his comments with a call to his G20 colleagues to share in the responsibility of security to foster innovation, as development cannot occur in a “regulatory vacuum.” As for France, they “will not miss the blockchain revolution.” Vive la France!

Billionaire Bitcoin Bull Michael Novogratz, founder and CEO of Galaxy Digital Capital Management, says every investor should have 1% to 2% of their portfolio in cryptocurrency. Not to do so, he told CNN, is “almost irresponsible.” BITCOIN OPINION MAY 12, 2018 11:52 Crypto To Disrupt Every Vertical On Wednesday, Novogratz’s firm and Bloomberg launched the Bloomberg Galaxy Crypto Index, an index that tracks 10 cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin and Ethereum. Investing in cryptocurrency is important not on account of expected gains, Novogratz said, but because in two to four years blockchain technology, which allows companies to make and record near instant transactions, will be challenging every vertical. While the decentralized version of Uber may not be Uber, it will be a challenge and it constitutes a “real value proposition,” he said. Novogratz, a former hedge fund manager at Fortress Investment Group and Goldman Sachs partner, said he has invested 10% of his net worth in cryptocurrencies. He revealed in 2017 that 20% of his net worth was in Bitcoin and Ethereum. He is estimated to have made over $250 million from crypto currency. Michael Edward “Mike” Novogratz (sometimes Novo, born

Titan’s surface temperature is about 94 K (−179.2 °C). Saturn’s largest moon Titan is one of several candidates for possible future colonization of the outer Solar System. Dr. Robert Zubrin has pointed out that Titan possesses an abundance of all the elements necessary to support life, saying “In certain ways, Titan is the most hospitable extraterrestrial world within our solar system for human colonization.”

How Blockchain, Co-Ops and ‘Microsubscription’ Services Could Help Artists Earn More From Music Streaming. 4/30/2018 by Grant Rindner | BILLBOARD [EXCERPTS] Streaming services have boomeranged record-company revenues. But given the major labels’ influence over track placement on services like Spotify and Apple Music -- and the formulas they use to calculate artist payouts -- many music makers are still struggling to make a living in the streaming ecosystem. Choon, is built on blockchain technology and cryptocurrency, promising fair, timely payments, a streamlined approach to publishing rights management, and greater transparency with artists. Started by British DJ Gareth Emery, Choon is not a co-op, though Emery says he “could see us graduating to more of an artist-owned model at some point in the future.” But its decentralization emphasizes equity for artists. Choon’s goal is to provide “80 percent of proceeds for streamed music or media directly and immediately to content creators” in the form of their NOTES cryptocurrency, as well as customizable “Smart Record Contracts” built through the service that create a public record of royalty breakdowns.

The stuff of audiophile legend, the vacuum tube gear Marantz made during the Golden Age of Stereo holds its own to this day. Marantz vacuum-tube components are prized for their richly textured, emotionally involving sound. A worldwide collector market—especially in Japan—is a testament to the enduring legacy of these eternally youthful designs. Regarded even today as three of the most outstanding electronic components of all time, the Model 7 preamplifier, Model 8B stereo, and Model 9 monaural power amplifier defined the state of the art. They were designed by Sid Smith, who moved to New York to pursue a career in opera and was hired by Marantz in 1954 to be his company’s chief engineer. The Model 10B FM tuner—created by Marantz, Smith, and Richard Sequerra, who joined Marantz in 1961—was even more advanced. Unfortunately, it was so expensive to produce that it ultimately put Marantz out of business, forcing a sale to Superscope. Other portents of doom loomed.

HAWK Written By Londa R. Marks, a founder of HAWK | July 2016 In the mid 1980’s Ahmet Ertegun, co-founder and president of Atlantic Records was considering signing popular Hollywood, California glam rock band HAWK to Atlantic Records. Just at that time turmoil within the band began and ultimately everything disintegrated due to money issues and personal differences.

HAWK was founded by and sponsored by Londa R. Marks and Doug Marks. HAWK band lineup was Doug Marks (Metal Method guitar instructor, guitarist), Scott Travis (drums, Judas Priest), Lonnie Vencent (bass, BulletBoys & King Kobra), Charles Morrill (vocals). HAWK album included David Fefolt (vocals), Matt Sorum (drums, Guns ‘N Roses, Velvet Revolver, Hollywood Vampires, Motorhead), Dave Tolly & Steve Ayola

The Hawk album was recorded in 1986 as a Doug Marks solo project after the original band dissolved earlier that year. Being signed to Atlantic Records may have been a good thing, but maybe not;

25 years later, a HAWK album is at least still being sold by one of the original HAWK artists, Doug Marks, for $7.50– $18.00 each. If Atlantic Records had signed the band, possibly a lot of money/ fame/artistic validation would have happened with HAWK but also possibly no money would have been made for the artists. In some cases however, selling your own albums can give you control over what you earn..
