1992 Metal CD Vol 1. No. 1 Music Magazine [Excerpt] “Fact one: UFO bass player Pete Way is one of the most sincere men in rock. So when Pete says, “I don’t think you can replace a vibe with a good musician,” or, “I think (producer) Leo Lyons caught something (in 1975) that was later embellished by Ron Nevison,” you know he bloody well means it from the bottom of his stripy trousers.

YouTube Comments 4 1/2 Stars = Minor Masterpiece Phil Moog & Pete Way with this album trumps the newer UFO albums & is a true UFO album in the sense of song writing, that is sharp, metallic, & quick to the point, this album just cuts it through out it’s entire length! One of the best albums I’ve heard from 70’s heavy metal icons or dinosaurs, as some with no respect for the major talents of the 70’s would say, but cut it anyway you like, this album rocks! The first two songs, “Muddy’s Gold” & “Jerusalem,” could’ve of been on any classic 70’s UFO disc, & the others are not far behind, as a matter of fact, this could’ve came from the pinnacle of 70’s UFO! If you love UFO, then this is a must! Get it before its price rises, & it will! Joe Salinas 2 years ago I’m always trying to get people to listen to this album... Really good written material!!! Every song is is a masterpiece to my ears!! Jerusalem my personal favorite. It’s like one youtuber said “this album is like a box of chocolates.” Giorgi Khabeishvili 2 years ago So true my friend. This album is pure rocknRoll, every song is fantastic, but for me “Jerusalem” is favorite as well, as it was first song I heard from this album and I loved it very much. So sad that the album is so underrated.

Iggie Pistolero And The Ban “One of the best Rock ‘n Roll groups to come out of the U.K for years!” —TRACCI GUNS, LA GUNS, ON GYPSY PISTOLEROS A founder of Gypsy Pistoleros, Iggie Pistolero is carrying on the dynamic drive of rock he generated in Gypsy Pistoleros with Iggie Pistolero And The Band Of Gypsys. Gypsy Pistoleros always had a reputation for danger and made history by being the only band to be invited to play at all five Rocklahoma festivals, in Oklahoma, USA; on May 28th 2011, they appeared alongside Poison, Whitesnake, Black Label Society, Papa Roach, etc where they closed Saturday night after Staind. They toured extensively, playing with the likes of L.A. Guns (Both), Ratt, Dogs d’Amour, Vains Of Jenna, Twisted Sister, Poison, Vince Neil, Bang Tango, Skid Row, Slaughter, Faster Pussycat, Dokken and ZZ Top, Papa Roach, Buckcherry, Love/Hate, Staind, Dirty Penny. The songs span madly in the best rock ‘n’ roll tradition! With big hooks, attitude, and sleaze. “The Pistoleros are sheer musical escapism”
—Classic Rock “A thrill-a-minute collection of melodic eye patch swagger that smells of exotic spices and forbidden concubines.”

A Space In Time If it’s Alvin’s creativity you’re looking for, start with 1972’s, A Space In Time, one of the most unfairly dismissed rock classics of all time. On the positive side, one shouldn’t make the mistake of overlooking his talents in that direction completely. From time to time, he managed to churn out an effective killer riff, equalling both those of his predecessors (Richards, Townshend) and of his contemporaries (Page), or produce a gorgeous, heartfelt ballad. Alvin wasn’t the most superb, technically gifted musician in the world. But he never stood on stage with a cold grin on his face, churning out his lightning-speed guitar fills out of pure self-indulgency and a burning desire to fill the top spot in any of the innumerable ‘best guitar players’ chart. What he did was completely giving himself into the music - and the result is that, while his guitar might sound a bit sloppy and raw at times, it also sounds completely enthralling, almost magically so, and intoxicating.

David William “Leo Lyons (born 30 November 1943) is an English musician who was most notably the bassist of the blues rock band Ten Years After. David Lyons was born in Mansfield, Notting-
hamshire, England. He first played with lead guitarist Alvin Lee in The Jaybirds. In 1967, there was a name change to Ten Years After. With this group, Lyons played at

major rock festivals, including Woodstock on 17 August 1969 and the Isle of Wight Festival on 29 August 1970. Ten Years After disbanded in 1976, although they later reformed several times in the 1980s and 1990s with all original members. In 1975, he was hired as a studio manager by Chrysalis Records to re-equip and run Wessex Studios in London. He then produced UFO from 1974 to 1976. Later, he started two commercial recording studios himself. [Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leo_Lyons]

the studio with other musicians? LEO LYONS: I enjoy the whole recording process as producer or player although sometimes it’s tricky to do both at the same time. I’m comfortable in the studio and as a producer I enjoy helping an artiste interpret their music in that environment. When a great song and performance come together the studio is a magical place. As a bass player working with different players makes me look at things in different ways. It takes me out of my musical comfort zone and we all need that if we want to develop our skills. PSYCHEDELICBABYMAG.COM: At the time everything must
have been happening quite fast. You got a contract with Deram and soon you released your début, which is absolutely incredible. Did you get concerts and tour right after the release? You must have been very popular…
LEO LYONS: There had been no instant success. Alvin and I had signed a recording contract in 1960 with record producer Joe Meek but nothing was released. It took over seven years to build up a following and to have a record released under our own name. I managed the band up until just before we got the Deram recording contract so I know how hard it was to get work. After brief trial runs with Larry Wallis (February - October 1972) and Bernie Marsden, UFO recorded a demo, “Give Her The Gun”) the band recruited Michael Schenker from the Scorpions in June 1973 who was only 18 at the time but was already a well-respected guitarist. On a new label, Chrysalis Records, and with a new producer, Leo Lyons (formerly of Ten Years After), UFO recorded Phenomenon in 1974, which debuted the band’s harder-edged guitar sound. Phenomenon was an instant classic, containing many fan favorites such as “Doctor Doctor” (later a minor hit single as a live track) and “Rock Bottom” (which was extended live to provide a showcase for Micael Schenker). By the time of the Phenomenon tour, ex-Skid Row guitarist Paul Chapman joined the group, but he left in January 1975 to form Lone Star. ‘The Good, The Bad, The Waysted’ was produced by TEN YEARS AFTER’s LEO LYONS, who had also produced UFO’s classic albums from the 70s. Michael George “Chick” Churchill
Born 2 January 1946, is an English keyboard player of the late 1960s to 1970s blues rock band Ten Years After. Churchill began playing the piano at the age of six and studied classical music until he was fifteen. He became interested in blues and rock music, and joined his first band Sons of Adam in Nottingham. Churchill then met Alvin Lee of The Jaybirds. At first, Churchill joined the band as its road manager, but he soon became the keyboard player. In November 1966 there was a name change to Ten Years After. With this group, Churchill played at major rock festivals including Woodstock in 1969, and the Isle of Wight Festival on 29 August 1970. ...Up in the control room here at Morgan Studios, he was pouring over the desk doing a re-take on one of his songs, looking for all the world like a seasoned engineer. “I’ve learned a hell of a lot about recording if nothing else,” he admitted, taking a short break while the back-up vocals trio, consisting of three very lovely ladies, had a breather. Chick explained, that the track they were working on, “Broken Engagements” had failed to show up as a single in Britain so, “soulful harmony singing was being added” at this moment, in order to boost its chances in the American Music Market. They worked over the track again and again, and to be honest, it’s haunted me ever since. His songs are all like that: maybe a little weak upon your first listen, but given a respectful amount of time, eventually they stick in your head. In between the takes, Chick managed to provide the story behind his remarkable musical about face. “I had been writing songs for about two years and I had collected quite a few when I decided one day to listen to them all. I found that I didn’t like any of them, so I sat down and wrote twelve new ones and that’s the album. Sounds simple doesn’t it? But having taken on the project, Chick characteristically went about it with a thoroughness that is well known to his friends. What most people don’t realize, is that Chick Churchill is a Classically trained musician, so he got right down to it and wrote / did the strings arrangements. “It had been six years since I had done anything of a classical nature, so I was a bit rusty, but I really wanted to do it. I suppose I was a bit fed up, as I had got to be known as a backing musician. People are going to be a bit surprised by the songs, basically I just had something in me that I wanted to get out and couldn’t get it out with Ten Years After.” Chick laughed when I wondered if this solo project might produce problems. “No, it doesn’t matter how successful the songs are, I’m always going to play with Ten Years After – though maybe they would let me do a solo spot.” He says he’s not after Ten Years After fans, and if they should buy the album out of curiosity, it’s sure to be a surprise. There’s a fair number of ballads on there, with thoughtful lyrics and melodic lines, and throughout Chick plays, piano, organ, electric piano, mellotron and even a Moog Synthesizer. He’s joined on this album, by what Chrysalis describes as their “Central Casting Call” some of the best musicians who record for the record label: There’s Bernie Marsden from the band “Wild Turkey” (and guitarist with *UFO) and Martin Barre from “Jethro Tull” on guitars, Cozy Powell from the band “Bedlam” and Ric Lee and Leo Lyons from “Ten Years After” Ric drums – while Leo shares bass duties with Rick (Roger) Hodgson from “Supertramp.” *Bernie Marsden got his first professional gig with UFO in 1972. He next played with Glenn Cornick’s Wild Turkey in 1973, before he joined drummer Cozy Powell’s band Cozy Powell’s Hammer. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bernie_Marsden SOURCES: http://www.alvinlee.de/1974.htm

Dieter Dierks
(Hans-Dieter Dierks) born 9 February 1943 in Stommeln, Germany is a musician, sound engineer, producer, music publisher and studio owner. He became well known as producer of the Scorpions who were signed to him between 1975 and 1988. Before that time he had already successfully established Hamburg-based band Atlantis in the US. Between 1969 and 1975 numerous albums of the “Krautrock” era were produced at Dierks Studio. From 1975 onwards more and more international artists started booking his state-of-the art sound and TV studios. During his career Dieter Dierks produced more than 70 albums, which reached gold or platinum status. Apart from his commercial success this “creative tinkerer” is also prominent thanks to his willingness to try out new things and his knack for technological innovation.

Melodic Principles for Rock Guitar Students often say “I recognized the sound of that interval/scale right away but I never knew what it was!” By associating the names and labels with the patterns and sounds you will make rapid progress with your ability to learn, play and write music for rock guitar. Volume I — Intervals: Learn all the intervals in an octave while building understanding of fretboard. Play riffs and licks based on these intervals; practice and jam with backing tracks of drums and bass. Volume II — Scale Degrees: Learn every degree of the chromatic scale, thereby enabling you to create any scale or mode from a given formula. Develop your listening skills so that you can enjoy and understand music on a higher level. Volume III — Scales and Modes: Construct and understand how to apply scales ranging from simple to exotic. Learn the modes in a simple and useful way not commonly taught. Play and learn to write solos from simple blues to ear-twisting metal. Do any of these fit you? • I have learned a lot of licks, riffs, and songs, but feel stuck with my progress. • I don’t understand how what I’m playing works or why. • I have trouble making up my own licks and riffs.
METAL METHOD GUITAR INSTRUCTOR SARAH SPISAK
• I want to spice up my tired pentatonic licks. Everything I play sounds like the blues. • I get stuck playing in box patterns and can’t move up and down the neck vertically. • I have trouble learning songs by ear. • My teachers only show me how to play songs. I don’t feel like I’m making any progress. • I feel that I have gaps in my knowledge of music and guitar. Consider this: Almost every student learns chords and at least one scale before knowing anything about their construction. This may be the quickest way to get started with playing guitar, but by skipping the REAL basics (scale degrees and intervals), the student is being set up for future frustration. If you memorize a speech in Japanese, can you speak Japanese? No- you need to learn some basic vocabulary and grammar. If you learn to play songs but don’t know any musical grammar or vocabulary, how will you speak music?

David Geffen Sells Malibu Home for Record $85 Million
The music mogul had hoped to net $100 million for the property, which has several structures, a swimming pool and spa, a theater, a gym and an outdoor living room with fireplace. For the cool price of $85 million, David Geffen has sold his oceanfront residence along Malibu’s Carbon Beach neighborhood.

Duff McKagan In 1998, a year after leaving Guns N’ Roses, Duff McKagan was working on his second solo album ‘Beautiful Disease‘ for Geffen. He was told, “We’re backing you, Duff. This album will be our top priority for the first quarter of 1999.” But the end of 1998 promo copies had been sent out and were receiving airplay and Duff was settling into a season of press interviews. Then Geffen was sold to Universal and merged with Interscope. On meeting the new boss, Duff was told, “I’m going on a ski vacation and I’m going to listen to all the upcoming releases with my kids. We’ll decide whether they have a future with the label or not. When I come back I’ll let everyone know. I’ll have each artist into my office to tell them personally where they stand.” On the day the album was due to hit the shops (which was also Duff’s birthday) he found a message left on his answering machine from an intern telling him Interscope had decided not to release “Beautiful Disease.” “I subsequently offered to buy the album back from the label so I could release it some other way. After all, I had put a lot of work into it and was proud of the results. I said I would pay all the recording costs – about $80,000 . They said no, sorry, we will only sell it at a profit. You can have it back for $250,000. Otherwise we’ll just keep it in the vault.” What’s wrong with this picture? What can we learn from this story? An artist can lovingly craft an album for months, working with professional producers, engineers and managers and end up at the mercy of an executive’s children. 13 years later Beautiful Disease is still unreleased. Interscope is not a shyster outfit. It’s a respectable major label. And Duff wasn’t stitched up by a bad contract. When an artist sign a record contract the label owns the music. Forever. Meaning Duff’s nightmare scenario could happen to any artist. READ COMPLETE ARTICLE HERE: http://www.mattblick.com/2012/05/duff-mckagangets-ripped-off.html

It is ruthless!” — Robert Greene, Co-author, With 50 Cent, The 50th Law. Machiavelli, born in Florence, Italy, son of an unsuccessful lawyer, was the opposite of what he wrote about, he basically revealed secrets so others can be aware or, use them, learn how to deal with despair, like 50 Cent became aware so he could protect his assets.

Marks — July 2016 In the mid 1980’s Ahmet Ertegun, co-founder and president of Atlantic Records was considering signing popular Hollywood, California glam rock band HAWK to Atlantic Records. Just at that time turmoil within the band began and ultimately everything disintegrated due to money issues and personal differences. Being signed to Atlantic Records may have been a good thing, but maybe not; 25 years later, a HAWK album is at least still being sold by one of the original HAWK artists, Doug Marks, for $7.50–$18.00 each. If Atlantic Records had signed the band, possibly a lot of money/fame/ artistic validation would have happened with HAWK but also possibly no money would have been made for the artists. In some cases however, selling your own albums can give you con-

ALBERT SCHWEITZER 1955
“Example is not the main thing influencing others, it is the only thing.” —Albert Schweitzer
Albert Schweitzer, OM (14 January 1875 – 4 September 1965) was a French-German theologian, organist, philosopher, and physician born in the German province of Alsace-Lorraine He received the 1952 Nobel Peace Prize for his philosophy of “Reverence for Life”, expressed in many ways, but most famously in founding and sustaining the Albert Schweitzer Hospital in Lambaréné, now in Gabon, west central Africa (then French Equatorial Africa). As a music scholar and organist, he studied the music of German composer Johann Sebastian Bach and influenced the Organ Reform Movement (Orgelbewegung).
The Choir Organ at St Thomas’ Church, Strasbourg, designed in 1905 on principles defined by Albert Schweitzer.
Schweitzer rapidly gained prominence as a musical scholar and organist, dedicated also to the rescue, restoration and study of historic pipe organs. With theological insight, he interpreted the use of pictorial and symbolical representation in J. S. Bach’s religious music. In 1899 he astonished Widor by explaining figures and motifs in Bach’s Chorale Preludes as painter-like tonal and rhythmic imagery illustrating themes from the words of the hymns on which they were based. They were works of devotional contemplation in which the musical design corresponded to literary ideas, conceived visually. Schweitzer developed a technique for recording the performances of Bach’s music. Known as “The Schweitzer Technique”, it is a slight improvement on what is commonly known as mid-side. The mid-side sees a figure-8 microphone pointed off-axis, perpendicular to the sound source. Then a single cardioid microphone is placed on axis, bisecting the figure-8 pattern. The signal from the figure-8 is muted, panned hard left and right, one of the signals being flipped out of polarity. In the Schweitzer method, the figure-8 is replaced by two small diaphragm condenser microphones pointed directly away from each other. The information that each capsule collects is unique, unlike the identical out-of-polarity information generated from the figure-8 in a regular mid-side. The on-axis microphone is often a large diaphragm condenser. The technique has since been used to record many modern instruments. Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albert_Schweitzer
