the irony of art is that it consumes the artist

As usual, each project I do kind of takes on its own life and without exception this 9th issue of Rock Legend News expended profound energies. Aspects of the info about Humble Pie were frustrating though especially in how their meager pay was basically stolen from them; it was sad and yet it became very difficult to finish this project, let it go, especially with the last pics of Steve which will haunt me forever since my art projects become a part of my soul and Steve Marriott is my all time favorite vocalist. When I began finalizing Steve’s section it was odd how quickly those last photos came to me, and some by chance, eventually formulating an amusing message as if directly from Steve, seemingly a whimsical sort of spirit trying to make light of that life he had; saying it’s okay, it was all part of the “Play” he came to earth to partake in. Rarely do I have a glass of wine or any alcohol for that matter even from my antique studio bar that was used in a Pharmacy here in Florence, Italy during the 1800’s. I’m more of a Chianti collector than drinker but I’m Irish so the bar in my studio is part of that necessary studio magic. “Nothing is trivial.” That night after installing Steve Marriott’s last photos I was dusting the bar, which in itself is pretty magical, and it seemed like a conduit of sorts, as bars can be, urging me to include in this issue the demanding-to-be-expressed thought, “the irony of art is that it consumes the artist, like a fire burning into it’s fuel.” —Londa

Iggie Pistolero And The Ban “One of the best Rock ‘n Roll groups to come out of the U.K for years!” —TRACCI GUNS, LA GUNS, ON GYPSY PISTOLEROS A founder of Gypsy Pistoleros, Iggie Pistolero is carrying on the dynamic drive of rock he generated in Gypsy Pistoleros with Iggie Pistolero And The Band Of Gypsys. Gypsy Pistoleros always had a reputation for danger and made history by being the only band to be invited to play at all five Rocklahoma festivals, in Oklahoma, USA; on May 28th 2011, they appeared alongside Poison, Whitesnake, Black Label Society, Papa Roach, etc where they closed Saturday night after Staind. They toured extensively, playing with the likes of L.A. Guns (Both), Ratt, Dogs d’Amour, Vains Of Jenna, Twisted Sister, Poison, Vince Neil, Bang Tango, Skid Row, Slaughter, Faster Pussycat, Dokken and ZZ Top, Papa Roach, Buckcherry, Love/Hate, Staind, Dirty Penny. The songs span madly in the best rock ‘n’ roll tradition! With big hooks, attitude, and sleaze. “The Pistoleros are sheer musical escapism”

—Classic Rock “A thrill-a-minute collection of melodic eye patch swagger that smells of exotic spices and forbidden concubines.”

JERRY SHIRLEY INTERVIEW Part 1 From Facebook Group: Humble Pie Official Jerry Shirley Best Seat In The House

“Greetings all, here is an interview I put together from questions asked by members of the ‘Official Humble Pie’ fan page and kindly answered by Jerry. Jerry also comes on the official fan page regularly and says things to the fans so I have added them here (IN HIS OWN WORDS) “Keep on Rockin”

“Keep on rockin” Jerry Shirley (born 4 February 1952) is an English rock drummer, best known as a member of the band Humble Pie, appearing on all their albums. He is also known for his work with Fastway, Joey Molland from Badfinger, Alexis Korner, Billy Nicholls, Syd Barrett, John Entwistle, Sammy Hagar and Benny Mardones. Fastway, a heavy metal band formed by guitarist, “Fast” Eddie Clarke, formerly of Motörhead, and bassist, Pete Way, formerly of UFO. In 1983, both players had been disgruntled with their own bands and decided to work together in a new outfit. They recruited

drummer, Jerry Shirley, formerly of Humble Pie, Waysted, Badfinger, Syd Barrett, David Gilmour and Roger Waters, John Entwistle, Sammy Hagar and the then unknown vocalist, Dave King (Irish vocalist, primary writer and lyricist for the band Flogging Molly). Fastway took their name from a combination of the founding members’ names. However, Way then discovered that he could not escape from his recording contract with Chrysalis Records, and then received a tempting offer to play for Ozzy Osbourne, so abandoned the project. Bringing in session bassist, Mick Feat, the band then recorded their debut album, Fastway. They are often incorrectly considered to be a NWOBHM band. NWOBHM bands like Iron Maiden and Motörhead started in 1975, whilst Fastway did not commence until 1983. A critical and commercial success, the band toured to promote the album (with Alfie Agius as their session bass player). The band then recruited Charlie McCracken, formerly of Taste as “permanent” bassist, and released another success in the form

of All Fired Up the following year. After the hardships of touring, Shirley and McCracken subsequently left. In 1986 Clarke and King reformed Fastway with a new line-up. Recruiting Shane Carroll (second guitar), Paul Reid (bass), and Alan Connor (drums) from Dave King’s first band Stillwood, this line-up released Waiting for the Roar. The record took an album-oriented rock approach instead of the driving bluesy-metal of the previous albums. The success of the record was limited, and it disappointed many fans. In 1987 Fastway was approached to make the soundtrack for the heavy metal horror film, Trick or Treat. The film flopped, but the soundtrack re-established Fastway as a hard hitting metal band. The soundtrack was a moderate success, and stayed on the Billboard Top 200 chart for eleven months. The success of the soundtrack, and the very little money the band received, caused in-fighting and the band disbanded. King took most of the band with him and started Q.E.D., a more AOR styled outfit. They released a twotrack single. Fastway is the debut album by Fastway.

1971 The Life And Times Of Steve Marriott, As drummer Jerry Shirley explained in the documentary

during the mixing of the album, the band presented what they thought to be the finished product to their manager, Dee Anthony. Upon listening to it, he made one comment: “Great, but where’s the audience?” It turned out that Marriott and Shirley were stoned and had forgotten to include the sound of the audience in the mix - so it was back to the mixing desk. Shortly before the album’s release, guitarist Peter Frampton left due to growing friction between him and Marriott. The album’s steady sales helped Performance: Rockin’ the Fillmore to become the band’s first RIAA gold record. Its popularity helped the band’s previous album, Rock On, reach gold album status as well. On October 29, 2013, Omnivore Recordings released all four sets recorded that weekend as a four CD set “Performance: Rockin’ the Fillmore-Complete Recordings”.

Jerry Shirley &Waysted Jerry Shirley was born in Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire, and began playing drums for the band Apostolic Intervention at an early age. He was later recruited by Steve Marriott to join the then newly formed rock band Humble Pie, when he was seventeen years old. Shirley remained as Humble Pie’s drummer for the majority of the group’s history and he is the only original member who played on every album. He also worked on Steve Marriott’s solo projects, such as Packet of three and was a co-founder of the popular 1980s group Fastway. Shirley co-wrote Fastway’s biggest hit, “Say What You Will”. After leaving Fastway, Shirley joined the line up of Waysted and reformed Humble Pie in the United States, with Charlie Huhn as vocalist. Shirley was the only original group member and they were billed as Humble Pie Featuring Jerry Shirley. They performed with a fluid lineup for ten years before disbanding. During this period, Shirley also worked as a disc jockey at WNCX, a classic rock station in Cleveland, Ohio. Shirley returned to the UK in 1999. In 2000 he reformed Humble Pie with their original bassist Greg Ridley and another former band member, guitarist and vocalist Bobby Tench. Artist’s Severe Sacrifices Steve Marriott gave us the gift of himself, as did Chris Cornell, Gregg Allman, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and others have and still do including some after almost 50 years in music. It’s a lot for a human being to give as much as these artists do and their deaths are very hard to take. But blaming or crucifying artists thinking that they should have given more or lived their life differently is selfish and possibly from a lack of not knowing what goes into producing works of art and the severe sacrifices artists endure. What we love about these artists includes everything they are comprised of; every choice they make ultimately adding to the ingredients of who they are. Complaints about Chris Cornell have run wildly through Facebook news feed claiming that he should have done this or that. It is disturbing to see. But, Bobby Barth spoke from his own experience, extreme physical pain and probably emotional pain that has come to him with being an artist. Here is an excerpt from his heartfelt comments: “I’ve not written about this before, but with all the deaths in the music community in the last few years, I’m gonna. A lot of musicians, who gave every ounce of whatever they were made of, night after night, year after year, suffer from pain, some from depression, some from both. But to all my guitarist and bass player buddies out there, who carried 15 pounds plus on your shoulder for THOUSANDS of nights, you probably have neck and back issues. Just be aware that even the new antidepressants can, in some people cause thoughts of suicide. You be careful if they are prescribed to you, should the thought even enter your mind, stop taking them prestissimo and call your doctor.” —Pappus Erectus. Read complete article: Bobby Barth Facebook. Bobby Barth is a musician, songwriter, studio owner and producer, with over 50 albums to his credit. Nearly 200 of his songs having appeared on dozens of different artists’ albums. He has toured the world for decades as lead singer and lead guitarist for Southern Rock legends Blackfoot, melodic rock pioneers, Axe, and Aussie superstar, Angry Anderson (Rose Tattoo). http://www.bobbybarth.com

Glass Harp

Phil Keaggy, John Sferra, Daniel Pecchio Glass Harp is a rock band formed in Youngstown, Ohio in 1968 consisting of Phil Keaggy, drummer John Sferra and bassist Daniel Pecchio. Phil Keaggy was a member of a mid1960s garage rock band called the Squires; one of their songs, which he co-wrote, appears on the compilation album Highs in the Mid-Sixties, Volume 9. In 1967 he moved on to briefly record with the band The New Hudson Exit. At one point, the band had apparently considered Joe Walsh as its lead guitarist. Walsh would later establish himself as guitarist for the James Gang before embarking on a solo career and work with the Eagles. In 1968, Keaggy and longtime friend drummer John Sferra, along with bassist Steve Markulin, formed the band Glass Harp. The band gigged in and around the Youngstown, Ohio area, finding work anywhere from school dances to clubs. This incarnation of the band recorded several demos and released the single “Where Did My World Come From?” on the United Audio label in 1969. Markulin left the group to join his cousin Joe in another successful Youngstown band, The Human Beinz. Keaggy and Sferra then recruited bass player Daniel Pecchio. Pecchio, formerly of the band The Poppy, was also a flautist, a talent that would later be showcased on a few of Glass Harp’s songs. Having recorded a new set of demos and signing with new management, the band set out to pol-

ish their live act and shop for a recording deal. The band quickly found a following in the thriving music scene of Northeast Ohio, particularly alongside contemporaries such as The James Gang. Glass Harp was especially popular at the legendary JB’s in Kent, Ohio, playing to packed houses during the volatile days surrounding the anti-war demonstrations at Kent State University. With their latest demos having found the ears of Grammy Award-winning producer Lewis Merenstein, Glass Harp began work on their first album for the Decca label in the fall of 1970. The eponymous debut album (as well as the two subsequent studio albums) was recorded in Jimi Hendrix’s Electric Lady Studios with Merenstein as producer. Following the release of their 1970 debut album with guest John Cale on viola, Glass Harp soon began getting more high-profile opening spots for the biggest bands of the day such as Alice Cooper, Chicago, Yes, Traffic, and Grand Funk Railroad among many others. Contrary to the tight production and song-oriented nature of their studio albums, the band’s live shows at the time demonstrated Glass Harp’s ability to stretch out and expand the boundaries of their compositions. While Glass Harp could be very at home with the progressive rock bands of the era, they were in fact one of the pioneers of what would later be known as the jam rock genre, with songs many times reaching over 30 minutes in length with extended solo passages and group improvisation. By 1971, Glass Harp became one of the most popular (if not one of the highest-paid) groups in Northeast Ohio. This led to both supporting and headlining shows nationally from The Fillmore East to The Winterland Ballroom. On November 21, 1971, the band played an opening spot for The Kinks at New York City’s prestigious Carnegie Hall, receiving a thunderous ovation at the end of their hour-long set. This performance was released as the Live At Carnegie Hall album in 1997. www.glassharp.net/ https://www.facebook.com/john.sferra http://www.glassharp.net/Pages/ghpress.html GLASS HARP TIMELINE https://musicmoz.org/Bands_and_Artists/G/Glass_Harp/Timeline/ http://www.philkeaggy.com/home

Memoirs From The Road To Everywhere: The Road To Rock n' Roll Volume 1) Mar 28, 2017 Written By Sebastian Jaymes

He has organized shows on exotic islands, in Castles, Archaeological ruins, and other exotic and sometimes dangerous locales in Europe, Asia, Russia, the Middle East, the Caribbean, Alaska, and elsewhere around the world. He has a passion for Archaeology and has visited ruins, on his own dime, around the world. Jaymes currently lives in Southern California and writes books and screenplays. Sebastian Jaymes grew up on “The North Coast of America” on the Great Lakes, near Lake Erie. At a very early age Jaymes decided he wanted to see the world, and did so first by exploring his home region. In the 1960’s, at the age of nineteen, and through a twist of fate, he was able to realize that goal as a Roadie, then Tour Manager for two hit Rock n Roll bands that toured the U.S. “We weren’t even called Roadies then. In those days we were called equipment managers.” In the late 60’s and early 1970’s Jaymes worked with an up and coming regional band that took him on a wild ride through the latter days of the 60’s “counter culture.” Finally achieving his goal of settling in California in the early 70’s, he found himself working in the mainstream of the Los Angeles Entertainment Industry, at first as a “Roadie” or a PA on TV variety shows, then as a Production Manager. He moved on to Tour management of various Celebrity Artists, touring the world over and realizing his childhood dream to “see the world on someone else’s dime.” (“My Memoir: Memoirs From The Road To Everywhere Vol I The Road To Rock n Roll is about growing up on the North Coast, yearning to see the world, and how I got my first job in entertainment as an “equipment manager” for a hit Rock n Roll

DEATHWHITE Submitted To Rock Legend News Date: Wed, 21 Jun 2017 01:40:31 +0000 Subject: DEATHWHITE Signs To Season Of Mist Season of Mist are proud to announce the signing of enigmatic dark metal band.

Regarding their signing, the DEATHWHITE comments: “We are incredibly honored to join the Season of Mist roster. DEATHWHITE started in 2012 as a basic studio project with the aim of playing dark metal in the vein of some of our most beloved bands. To have Season of Mist take an interest in us is far beyond our expectations. We now turn our attention to the proper release of our first full-length, ‘For a Black Tomorrow’, and look forward to among other things, our first live performances, and an enduring partnership with Season of Mist.” Formed in 2012, DEATHWHITE were created in part to follow in the path created by dark metal torchbearers such as KATATONIA, MY DYING BRIDE, PARADISE LOST, and ANATHEMA. The band’s earliest work gave rise to their impactful blend of heavy, melodic, and deeply emotional metal. DEATHWHITE’s profile grew significantly with the late 2015 release of their ‘Solitary Martyr’ EP, which was hailed by critics as “...spun gold, thick with emotion...” and “wonderfully engrossing.” DEATHWHITE spent 2016 writing and recording their first full-length album ‘For a Black Tomorrow’. ‘For a Black Tomorrow’ is scheduled for international release through Season of Mist in early 2018. While the band puts the finishing touches on ‘For a Black Tomorrow’, experience the ‘Solitary Martyr’ Ep at the official DEATHWHITE Bandcamp page. ----------Deathwhite https://deathwhite.bandcamp.com/ http://deathwhite.com/

HUMBLE PIE Live at the Whisky A-Go-Go 1969 UK release of previously unissued concert taped during Humble Pie’s American tour in L.A. in December 1969, recorded after the success that summer of the single ‘Natural Born Budgie’ & the accompanying album, As Safe As Yesterday Is. This album features lengthy jams, beginning with a mesmerizing rewrite of the Yardbird’s ‘For Your Love’, ‘Shakin’ All Over’, the Johnny Kid classic, ‘The Sad Bag of Shakey Jake’ from their second Immediate album, ‘Hallelujah I Love Her So’ the Ray Charles classic & Dr. John’s ‘Walk on Gilded Splinters,’ 2001.

Amazon 5-STAR REVIEW Humble Pie - ‘Live At The Whiskey A Go-Go ‘69’ (Sanctuary) By Mike ReedVINE VOICEon May 25, 2015 Format: Audio CD|Verified Purchase “Every bit as ass-kicking fantastic as their classic must-own ‘Rockin’ The Fillmore’ vintage piece. Like a true audio gem of the British classic blues rock band’s very first U.S. tour. Cannot get enough of these unreleased live shows of many days gone by as such. Every track here is 110% righton. Thoroughly enjoyed the awesome opener “For Your Love” where Steve Marriott and crew are clearly give it their all, as well as the rocking twelve-minute “Shakin’ All Over,” their superbly-played Ray Charles cover “Hallelujah I Lover Her So” and the twenty-one minute Dr. John penned “I Walk On Gilded Splinters.” Sound quality is near-perfect. The eye-catching CD cover insert is a three-way two-sided fold-out with one side - being a reproduction of the original concert flyer. Highly recommended.”

HUMBLE PIE - STEVE MARRIOTT 1972

Ste ve Marriott

“30 Days in the Hole”

is the seventh single by English rock group Humble Pie, from the band’s 1972 Smokin’ album. The song received moderate radio airplay at the time but failed to chart. However it gained a following on album oriented rock and classic rock radio formats and consequently it remains one of Humble Pie’s best known songs. The B-side on its US release was “Sweet Peace and Time,” while everywhere else the B-side featured, “C’mon Everybody” and “Road Runner.” “30 Days in the Hole,” a Steve Marriott composition, bemoans being arrested for possession of small quantities of illegal drugs, including cocaine; Durban poison, a potent strain of marijuana, and Red Lebanese and Black Nepalese, two types of hashish. “New Castle Brown” is often mistaken as a reference to Newcastle Brown Ale but actually refers to heroin also known as “Brown” or “Smack.” The song refers to Borstal - “some seeds and dust, and you got Borstal”- referring to Borstal Prison and its borstal ilk - any manner of a British juvenile gaol. (Most lyrics listings get this wrong, and say “buzzed on” or “bust on.”) UFO’s eponymously titled first album debuted in 1970 and was a typical example of early hard rock also included a heavy version of the Eddie Cochran’s classic “C’mon Everybody.” Both UFO 1 and its follow-up UFO 2: Flying, were successful in Japan (especially the single “C’mon Everybody” which became a huge hit there).

HUMBLE PIE Steve Marriott Steve Marriott was born 30 January 1947 at East Ham Hospital, Forest Gate, (now London, E7), England. He was born three weeks premature and weighing just 4 lb 4 oz (1.9 kg), developed jaundice and was kept in hospital four weeks before being well enough to go home. Steve Marriott was inducted posthumously into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012 as a member of Small Faces and posthumously received an Ivor Novello Award in 1996 for his Outstanding Contribution to British Music, and was listed in Mojo as one of the top 100 greatest singers of all time.

Marriott was influenced from an early age by his heroes including Buddy Holly, Booker T & the MG’s, Ray Charles, Otis Redding, Muddy Waters and Bobby Bland. In later life Marriott became disillusioned with the music industry and turned his back on the big record companies, remaining in relative obscurity. He returned to his music roots playing the pubs and clubs around London and Essex. In 1963, Marriott wrote “Imaginary Love” and touted it around the big record labels in London. On the strength of “Imaginary Love,” Marriott secured a Decca Records deal as a solo artist with Dick Reagan (also an agent for Cliff Richard). Despite the single being hawked around the major record companies, no one was interested and the song was never released. The band then changed their name to The Moments, or Marriott and his Moments. They played support for artists such as The Nashville Teens, The Animals, Georgie Fame and John Mayall. The group was asked to record a single for the American market, a cover version of The Kinks’ UK hit song “You Really Got Me,” released on the World Artists record label (1964). When their version of “You Really Got Me” failed to get attention, Marriott was dropped from the band, with members claiming he was too young to be a lead singer. Marriott is reputed to have been Jimmy Page’s benchmark when selecting a lead singer, and there are unmistakable stylistic and timbral similarities between the voices of Marriott and Robert Plant, Led Zeppelin’s lead singer. In fact, Plant was a fan of Small Faces and a regular at their early gigs where he also ran small errands for them. Zeppelin’s classic song “Whole Lotta Love” is a direct take of Marriott’s version of the classic song “You Need Lovin,” originally written by Willie Dixon and recorded by American blues singer Muddy Waters. “It was fantastic, I loved it, Muddy Waters recorded it but I couldn’t sing like Muddy Waters so it wasn’t that much of a nick. I was a high range and Muddy was a low range so I had to figure out how to sing it. So I did and that was our opening number for all the years we were together. Every time we were on stage that was our opening number, unless we had a short set. That’s where Jimmy Page and Robert Plant heard it. Robert Plant used to follow us around. He was like a fan.” —Steve Marriott In 1967, after a dispute over unpaid royalties, relations between the Small Faces and Don Arden broke down and Arden sold them on to Andrew Loog Oldham, who owned the Immediate Records label. The band were much happier at Immediate, spending more time in the recording studio and far less time playing live, but they lost the dynamic live sound that had made them famous. After the success of the group’s number one hit concept album Ogdens’ Nut Gone Flake Marriott was keen for the group to evolve and wanted to bring in ex-Herd frontman Peter Frampton, but McLagan, Jones and Lane refused. Marriott started to feel the band had reached the end creatively and began to spend more time with Frampton and Greg Ridley. After rumours in the press about the band splitting up, which were always officially denied, Marriott quit the group, storming off stage during a disastrous live performance on New Year’s Eve, 1968. In a 1984 interview with NME reporter Paolo Hewitt on the subject of leaving the band, Marriott said:

E

“You grow apart for Christsakes. You’re talking about people living together from the ages of seventeen to twenty-two and that’s a growing up part of your life and we got to hate each other, no doubt about it. We didn’t speak to each other for fucking years. Maybe ten years.” —Marriott

Paul Castellano, all members of the Gambino crime family. Marriott was informed that he would not be getting any money and was warned to drop the matter. Marriott took the threats seriously. At the end of his life he was nearly penniless and received almost no royalties from his music.

Frampton claims that after Marriott’s departure from the Small Faces, the remaining members, Lane, McLagan and Jones, turned up at his home and offered him Marriott’s role in the band. (Ian McLagan vehemently denied this story).

Steve Marriott was found lying on the floor between the bed and wall, investigators concluded that he tried unsuccessfully to escape after being awakened by the blaze. Disoriented and confused after inhaling large amounts of thick smoke, Marriott had turned left instead of right towards the bedroom door and safety. He had been unable to rectify his mistake before being overcome with smoke. At the inquest, a verdict of accidental death by smoke inhalation was recorded. Marriott’s blood was found to contain quantities of Valium (taken earlier for flight nerves), alcohol and cocaine.

“The following day after the Alexandra Palace gig (where Steve walked off), I was back home and I got a call from Ronnie Lane who said, ‘Me, Kenneyand Mac would like to come round and see you.’ I thought, Hello, what’s all this about? Anyway, they all came round to my horrible little flat in Earls Court and asked me to join the Small Faces. All I could say was it’s a bit late now. Why couldn’t you have asked me while we were in Paris? We’d all be in the same band together and Steve wouldn’t have left.” —Peter Frampton. Shortly after leaving Small Faces, Marriott joined the newly formed rock band Humble Pie with Peter Frampton, drummer Jerry Shirley and bassist Greg Ridley. In the early years, Humble Pie allowed Marriott the artistic freedom he craved but was denied in Small Faces due, in part, to commercial pressures and individual differences. After extensive secret rehearsals at his Clear Sounds home recording studio, the band released on Immediate their debut album As Safe As Yesterday Is, closely followed by the Marriott-penned debut single “Natural Born Bugie” (often mis-spelt “Boogie”), which peaked at No. 4 in the UK Singles Chart in the summer of 1969. Humble Pie almost disbanded after their first American tour when they returned to Britain and discovered that Immediate had gone into liquidation. They transferred to A&M Records and focused all their attention on the lucrative US market. Their new manager, Dee Anthony, had the band scrap its ‘unplugged’ set and crank the volume up. “We were all doing too many drugs, we’d lost sight of our business arrangements and no-one within the band had any control over money matters. But the main reason was that we were making bad records, it all came to a head in early 1975. The rot had set in so deep it was inevitable.” —Jerry Shirley (Humble Pie) Marriott always believed Dee Anthony had syphoned off band earnings to promote his new project, Frampton and his album Frampton Comes Alive. After Marriott’s death, second wife Pam Stephens claimed in an interview that while they were making the Marriott solo album they were warned off accusing Anthony of any financial misdealings and received threatening phone calls. Anthony was alleged to have links with the Genovese crime family (among others). She also claimed that after Marriott confronted Anthony about the missing money, she and Marriott were summoned to a meeting at the Ravenite Social Club on Mulberry Street in New York’s Little Italy district. Among those present were John Gotti, Frank Locascio and

According to Ronnie Wood in his autobiography Ronnie, Marriott was Richards’ first choice to replace Mick Taylor. “Steve told me, ‘I was good and stood at the back for a while but then Keith [Richards] would hit this lick and I just couldn’t keep my mouth shut.’ Keith wanted him in but there was no way that once Steve opened his mouth Mick would have him in the band. He knew Steve would never stay in the background. They were the one band in the world that Steve would have loved to have been in. He just wanted to work with Keith.” —Pam Marriot “He (Marriott) was certainly the most talented person I ever worked with. He was like a brother to me and I was devastated when he died. He always lived on the edge and I was always waiting for a ‘phone call to say that he had died but I never dreamed it would be under those circumstances. He’s never got the credit he deserves. He should be in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame because he was the greatest white soul singer that England ever produced. I’m certain that if you caught the likes of Rod Stewart and Paul Rodgers in a private moment and asked them who was the main man, they would say, Steve Marriott.” —Jerry Shirley

NOTES • After the departure of lead guitarist Mick Taylor from the Rolling Stones, Keith Richards wanted Steve Marriott to fill the slot. Marriott sabotaged his chances at the rehearsal by hamming it up too much and singing, which immediately turned Mick Jagger against him. • Humble Pie’s mob-connected management badly ripped off the band. When Marriott tried to play hardball to reclaim some of the money owed to him, threats were issued that made it clear he should consider himself fortunate if he never sees a dime. • By the mid-70s, Marriott’s Small Faces and Humble Pie money had run out. He struggled financially for the rest of his life. https://patch.com/new-hampshire/bedford-nh/10-reasonswhy-steve-marriotts-life-was-agreek-tragedy

“Steve and Ronnie Lane went to America to see Clive Davis of Arista Records. They played him the tape. Clive Davis was tapping his foot and tapping his very expensive pen on his very expensive desk. He said “Yeah, that’s great man.” Steve said, “So you like the tape, Clive?” Steve then stopped the tape, ejected it and said, “WELL YOU CAN’T FUCKING HAVE IT!” The story that Steve told me was that it would have meant touring and Ronnie just wasn’t up to it. It would have meant pretty much carrying him everywhere, no tour, no album. That’s why the Mijits never came out at that point in time. It’s been gathering dust for ages” —Jim Leverton.

On Friday 19 April 1991, Marriott and Poulton flew home from the United States, where Marriott had recorded songs for a future album with Frampton. During the flight, according to Poulton, Marriott was drinking heavily, was in a foul mood, and the two argued constantly. After arriving in the UK, a mutual friend met them and they all went to one of Marriott’s favourite restaurants, The Straw Hat in Sawbridgeworth for dinner, where he consumed more alcohol. After dinner, they returned to their friend’s house and decided to stay overnight, since it was late, but upstairs in bed, Marriott and Poulton continued to argue. Poulton finally fell asleep and later woke to discover that Marriott had taken a taxi home alone. At about 6:30 am on 20 April, a passing motorist saw the roof of Marriott’s cottage ablaze and called the fire brigade. It was reported that four fire engines were needed to put out the fire. In newspaper interviews, Assistant Divisional Fire Officer Keith Dunatis, who found Marriott, said: “It was a tough fight getting upstairs. We searched the bedroom areas and it was very hot, we knew immediately that noone could have survived the fire. We began to feel around the walls and discovered him lying on the floor between the bed and the wall. I would say he had been in bed and tried to escape. As soon as I saw the body clearly I knew who it was. I used to be a fan, it’s difficult to put my feelings into words. The scene was horrific in that corner of the room. I saw him lying there and thought what a pity it all was. I deal with many fires but this one was like walking down memory lane. We managed to salvage all his guitars and musical equipment. I feel a bit upset, all the firemen do. It was like seeing part of our lives gone forever.” —Fire Officer

After the Beatles breakup in 1970, Martin could have retired and rested on his laurels, but he carried on and produced countless bands and artists, working with America from 1974 to 1979, and recording two of Jeff Beck’s best instrumental albums Blow By Blow in 1975 and Wired in 1976. He also produced Mahavishnu Orchestra’s Apocalypse album. He produced heavier acts like U.F.O’s 1980 album No Place To Run, and Cheap Trick’s unexpectedly experimental All Shook Up in 1980. He supervised the music selections for the Beatles Anthology in 1994-1995. I have always argued that George Martin was more adept as an orchestral arranger and composer than he was given credit for. The orchestral score for Yellow Submarine (1968) has some hugely inventive moments. Martin did a second score when he worked with Paul McCartney on the theme for the James Bond film Live and Let Die in 1973, which he also wrote the score to alongside some nice embellishments to the Monty Norman theme. Martin was also involved with Elton John’s re-recording of “Candle In The Wind” (the biggest selling single of all time) in 1997 following the death of Princess Diana. He helmed a retirement album in 1998 called In My Life with various artists. Read complete article at: http:// thex-fileslexicon.blogspot.it/2016/06/ in-memoriam-2016-part-2.html

The Studio that made Rock & Roll History is Rotting Away on a Caribbean Island. The island of Montserrat in the West Indies became a Caribbean Pompeii when in 1995, the Soufrière Hills volcano woke up. The capital was buried in more than 12 metres of mud while the rest of the island was mostly wiped out

except for a small unaffected area on the northern tip. Under a thin layer of earth, Monserrat is still burning underneath. AIR, was one of the most prolific recording studios in music history. At least 67 albums were recorded there with legendary musicians including The Rolling Stones, Michael Jackson, The Police,

Sir Elton John, Lou Reed, Dire Straits, Duran Duran, Stevie Wonder, UFO’s No Place To Run album (AIR Studios, Montserrat & AIR Studios, London) – and the list goes on. See more photos and read more >>

Bernie Torme, from Dublin, Ireland was influenced by Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck, Rory Gallagher, and Gary Moore. in 1979 Bernie joined Ian Gillan band Gillan. Over the next four years the group enjoyed three Top Ten UK albums (Mr. Universe, Glory Road, and Future Shock), in addition to extensive worldwide tours of Europe, Japan, and the United States. He played as a live session man for Atomic Rooster and then Ozzy Osbourne as the immediate successor of the recently deceased original guitarist Randy Rhoads. Since 1982 Bernie Tormé has led his own band under various names and lineups (including a version of Torme with singer Phil Lewis, formerly of Girl and later with LA Guns). In addition to the continued release of new Tormé recordings and re-issuance of his back catalogue titles, Tormé also became involved with the ‘Silver’ project, which also included former Michael Schenker Group vocalist Gary Barden. Terry Reid Yardbirds guitarist Jimmy Page became interested in Reid’s work, and when The Yardbirds disbanded, Page wanted Reid to fill the vocalist spot for his proposed new group, the New Yardbirds, which was to become Led Zeppelin. Reid had already committed to go on the road with Cream (as an opening act on the 1968 US Tour). So he suggested to Page that he consider a young Birmingham based singer, Robert Plant, instead, having previously seen Plant’s Band of Joy as a support act at one of his concerts.

PledgeMusic will continuously reinvent ways to help artists create and promote their music and give fans personal connections to the artists they love and support. PledgeMusic is an online direct-to-fan music platform, launched in August 2009, that facilitates musicians reaching out to their fanbase (termed Pledgers) to pre-sell, market, and distribute music projects including recordings, music videos, and concerts. Broadly speaking it bears some similarities to such platforms as ArtistShare, Kickstarter, Indiegogo, Patreon, RocketHub and Sellaband. PledgeMusic considers itself a direct-to-fan platform as opposed to a crowdfunding website. Features of PledgeMusic that distinguish it from other crowdfunding systems include that it: •

is solely focused on raising funds for musicians

•

does not retain any ownership or rights to any music created

through the platform •

encourages artists to include contributions to charity as part of

their fundraising project

absorbs all transaction processing costs involved in pledging on

a project •

encourages artists to offer a wide range of incentives and ex-

clusive content to pledgers •

does not process any funding transactions until the funding

target is reached •

is international, accepting artists, projects and pledgers from all

over the world •

allows pledger refunds

PledgeMusic allows two distinct types of campaigns: direct-to-

fan and preorder. In direct-to-fan campaigns, fans are not charged until the project target is reached, at which point money is collected in an “artist account” that holds the money for disbursement to the intended recipients. If a target is not reached, fans are not charged. In preorder campaigns, fans are charged immediately, and the artist is paid directly upon project completion, much like traditional online retail.

ROBB REPORT

How the Blockchain Can Change the Music Industry A new “fair trade” music format could clean up the murky world of rights and royalties I am the CEO of an amazing company PledgeMusic whose amazing women and men solve what I refer to as the “first mile” problem of the music industry, by eliminating risk, creating engagement and giving artists both money and data to go off and make their music. In short, we help create the rights that the proposed .bc (or dotblockchain) format seeks to codify. This is a full time job, and it is one that I love deeply. The “last mile” problem, which is the one that this project seeks to solve, is something that I care so very deeply about but that I could not solve on my own (even if

I didn’t have a job already). This needs to be solved by all of us, an industry-wide initiative to fix the very problems that we created. I will do all that I can — mornings, lunches, nights and weekends — to advocate for it, but it’s not one person’s job. It’s our job, and that includes you who are reading this. As such, I have created a staging area for this idea which can be seen at www. dotblockchain.info to help me get a handle on all cof the inbound email that has come my way and also to solicit support from interested parties. To recap: I proposed in the previous piece that we, the music industry, should create and own our own fair trade music format. Like the MP3 or the WAV that came before it, but in this case a format that cannot be separated from its rights and still be played. I called this a .bc or dotblockchain codec. Within this codec would be the building blocks of a unified data set. Anytime an artist or rights holder is ready to make their works available to the world, they would create a .bc file rather than a standard WAV or MP3. This would mean that all of the data needed to figure out who to pay, who owned what, and

when it was created would literally be contained and/or referenced within the file itself. Once this step was completed all of this information would then be written into the blockchain and made available for all. So we would, with a unified and fair trade data standard, create a Global Distributed Database of Musical Rights every time a song is encoded. This would mean that we—the artists, labels, publishers and musicians who created these works—would serve them to the world in the fairly-traded way of our choosing. Further to this, I proposed that VR, 360 Video and AR (Augmented Reality) would be the Trojan horse to drive both momentum and adoption. Since writing this, we (and I’ll get to who that is later) have not only seen that this is all technically possible, but that we may even be close to an MVP that could get this whole thing kicked off. Below is an update to my initial concept based on meetings and feedback from all sectors of the industries involved. 1. It’s not a codec anymore. It’s a wrapper. What we are proposing would not in fact be a codec but rather it would be a wrapper or container like a .zip extension that would perform all that is needed to ensure carriage of the MVD (Minimum Viable Data) into the blockchain. And it would we propose do this using the W3C web standard JSON LD. See next page after Bitcoin Suisse AG: (and here on the web: https://monegraph.com/m6788760298) Each .bc container could contain the hi-res, medium-res, low-res, stems, lyrics and associated data, etc making it possible for DSP’s and players to use the version that they require along with a manifest that would be mandatory for fair trade play or alteration. In effect: music with manifest = fair trade. Music without manifest = sweat shop. The Steem blockchain has two tokens: STEEM and Steem Dollars. Steem began with a highly inflationary supply model, doubling roughly every year. However due to community demand, on December 6th, 2016 the inflation rate of Steem was changed to 9.5% per year, reducing by 0.5% per year.

STEEM

The STEEM token is the network’s base token. It is traded on multiple cryptocurrency exchanges and markets. Its market value determines the value of the pool of rewards paid by Steem. Its value also backs the value of Steem Dollars. Steemit runs on top of a decentralized network named Steem. Like Bitcoin, Steem is a blockchain with transferable tokens. In addition to moving tokens from one place to another, Steem is also a text content and metadata database that applications or websites can connect to. Through these apps, Steem accounts can transact and interact with the Steem database. Instead of using cryptographic hashes as addresses like many blockchains do, user-chosen alphanumeric account names are used. With human readable account names, transactions can be made directly from an identity to an identity, making them easier to understand than hashes. Steem also reaches decentralized consensus differently than Bitcoin. It uses a method called delegated proof of stake where block-creating accounts, called witnesses, are elected by Steem stakeholders. Instead of relying on proof of work to find blocks, the Steem network actively schedules these accounts to improve the time between blocks to 3 seconds. Block producers are given a small part of the rewards created in each block; the rest is paid to authors and curators. Steem has no transaction fees for rate limiting or to pay its block producers. Instead, accounts use bandwidth, which replenishes fast enough that a typical user is not affected or limited.

Steem Dollars

The Steem Dollar (commonly abbreviated SBD) is an asset intended to be pegged to the United States dollar. Steem Dollars can be traded at cryptocurrency exchanges, and used for payments for goods and services. There is an internal market on the Steem blockchain and integrated in the Steemit website where STEEM can be traded with Steem Dollars and vice-versa. Steem Dollars can be converted into an equivalent-value amount of STEEM in a process that takes 3.5 days. Steem Dollars which are held receive an interest rate. This rate is set as a variable collectively by Steem witnesses. As of March 2017 this rate is 2% annually. If Steem Dollars are being traded below parity with the US dollar and the supply of Steem Dollars is not too high relative to the liquid STEEM supply, the interest rate may rise.

Wallet

The Wallet page on Steemit shows the tokens belonging to an account. The webbased wallet allows network transfers of Steem Dollars and STEEM. Additionally it has controls for powering up or down, transferring liquid tokens to and from savings balances, and conversion of Steem Dollars to STEEM. Savings balances are provided as a security measure and take 3 days for a withdraw.

Cryptocurrencies Bitcoin, Bitcoin Wallets & Bitcoin Debit Cards Two basic steps to owning and maintaining Bitcoin & Cryptocurrencies: Buy any amount of Bitcoin. Just because it is $2000 a Bitcoin or more doesn’t mean you have to buy that amount. You can buy $10 worth.

Buy / Sell Bitcoins / Cryptocurrencies 1. Open an account to buy Bitcoin such as: Coinbase.com, Gemini.com or Kraken.com Coinbase.com is the easiest way to buy/sell/receive/send Bitcoin, though expect days to weeks to be approved due to the flood of people trying to get on Coinbase and other cryptocurrency exchanges now. Coinbase, a small exchange has publicly stated that they have close to 40,000 people trying to sign up for accounts daily. Prepare to have your drivers license, bank account info and other forms of identification ready when you sign up for an account. Once you are approved DO NOT leave your Bitcoin or other cryptocurrency in Coinbase or similar exhanges.Transfer it to your Wallet to hold such as Exodus.io Be sure to notice if you are on Exodus.io to download the wallet, not Exodus.com or ExodusWallet.com or any similar site.

Crypto Currrency Wallet 2. Transfer your Bitcoin, Ethereum and such to a Wallet. You want to hold your money, not leave it at the Exchange (Coinbase.com, etc). Cryptocurrency is an investment that can go up and down. Prepare for that. You can make money but you can also lose it, depending on when you cash out or exchange it. The top two are Bitcoin and Ethereum. Watch price fluctuations: http://coinmarketcap.com/ Here is a list of Wallets: https://www.cryptocompare.com/wallets/#/overview Don’t panic when prices go down. They also go back up. This is normal. The safest thing to do is sit on it like a savings account; an investment. If you double your money, buy silver or gold or cash it into fiat/ cash. Learn as much as you can about cryptocurrencies. XAPO debit card, used where anyone takes Visa https://xapo.com

A Norwegian man who bought $27 worth of bitcoins in 2009 and forgot about them discovered their value had since shot up to $980,000 at today’s price. Kristoffer Koch decided to buy 5,000 bitcoins for only 150 Norwegian kroner ($26.60) in 2009, after discovering bitcoin as part of an encryption thesis he was working on. Koch probably didn’t think he would become wealthy as a result, but his 5,000 BTC has turned into a goldmine. It was a wise investment by someone who stumbled across bitcoin before many others did. Koch found that his bitcoins were worth 5 million Norwegian kroner ($886,000) when he checked back in on them. At the current Bitcoin Price Index of $196, those coins are now worth about $980,000.

After purchasing the 5,000 bitcoins, Koch pretty much forgot about them altogether. That is, until the price shot up to over $200 back in April and he started seeing press coverage about bitcoin’s rise. “I thought to myself, didn’t I have something like that?” Koch told NRK, a Norwegian news outlet. He did, and after figuring out the password to his wallet and seeing how valuable those bitcoins had become, he sold off a portion of them. Now he has an apartment that he purchased in an expensive part of Oslo, Norway. All thanks to the huge price gain that bitcoin has experienced, mostly in the past year. Wallet Option 2 Paper Wallets Easily Explained By Kenn Bosak Paper wallets are optional if you use Exodus but you can have as many wallets as youw ant. It is important to understand that, if anyone else obtains the private key of your wallet, they can withdraw your funds – this is why it’s absolutely essential that nobody else discovers it. Always backup and have a couple of copies in different locations. So, if you keep your coins in either an online wallet, or a hard-drive-based software wallet, you are vulnerable to attacks by hackers or malware that can log your keystrokes. Furthermore, a stolen PC or a hard-drive crash could also see you waving bye-bye to your digital treasure.

Wallet Option 3 Hardware Wallets

Used with care, a paper wallet can protect you from these possibilities. A paper wallet is a document that contains copies of the public and private keys that make up a wallet. Often it will have QR codes, so that you can quickly scan them and add the keys into a software wallet to make a transaction. The benefit of a paper wallet is that the keys are not stored digitally anywhere, and are therefore not subject to cyber-attacks or hardware failures. Checkout Kenn Bosak’s YouTube video.

Thank you for joining my professional network. I admire your work experience and talent. I enjoyed your review of the Pat Traverse band. I played with the band in 1984 lead guitarist all over south Florida and the Fort Lauderdale strip briefly. I Met Pat Traverse because we were neighbors in Coral springs Florida at that time. I still shred a mean “Snortin Whiskey.” But my favorite song I played with Pat was cream cover of Born under a bad sign.” Best regards, —Brian Dyer
