Nina Simone Wild Is The Wind
(Live In New York 1964) From the 1966 album of the same name.
Eunice Kathleen Waymon
(February 21, 1933 – April 21, 2003), known professionally as Nina Simone, was an American singer, songwriter, musician, arranger, and civil rights activist. Her music spanned a broad range of musical styles including classical, jazz, blues, folk, R&B, gospel, and pop. The sixth of eight children born to a poor family in Tryon, North Carolina, Simone initially aspired to be a concert pianist. With the help of a few supporters in her hometown, she enrolled in the Julliard School of Music in New York City. She then applied for a scholarship to study at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where she was denied admission despite a well-received audition which she attributed to racism. In 2003, just days before her death, the Institute awarded her an honorary degree. “Wild Is the Wind” is a song written by Dimitri Tiomkin and Ned Washington for the 1957 film, Wild Is the Wind. SHANGRI-LAS Mary Weiss
Mary Weiss (born December 28, 1948) is an American pop music vocalist, best known as the lead singer of The Shangri-Las in the 1960s. She then vanished from the music scene for decades, returning in 2007 to record her first solo album with Norton Records. After Mary Weiss and her sister Betty became good friends with twins Mary Ann and Margie Ganser in grammar school, the four of them sang at local dances and hops. That brought them to the attention of local producer Artie Ripp, who later signed them on to Kama Sutra Productions. After recording demos and making it to the Brill Building in 1964 (and signing with Red Bird Records), they recorded songs: “Remember (Walking in the Sand)”, which was their first hit, and “Leader of the Pack”, which went to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts in 1964. With their growing popularity, the Shangri-Las became a leading girl group in the 1960s. After several years of the grind, they split in 1968 and went their separate ways. Mary Weiss went to San Francisco to try a different lifestyle. She later came back to New York and occasionally gave shows with the Shangri-Las during the 1970s which led to a comeback attempt with Sire Records in 1977. In 1989, the Shangri-Las reunited one last time for Cousin Brucie’s Palisades Park Reunion show at The Meadowlands in New Jersey. In 2019, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame honored the Shangri-Las “Leader Of The Pack” song with its Singles category. Weiss was the lead singer of the song. The song became one of the most iconic teenage tragedy songs. However, the Shangri-Las were not technically inducted into the hall even though they have been eligible for induction since 1990. The category only honors songs that shaped rock and roll.

Mary was fifteen years old when she and her sister Elizabeth (Betty) began singing with identical twins Margie and Mary Ann Ganser in their Cambria Heights neighborhood of Queens, New York, as students at Andrew Jackson High School. They soon came to the attention of George “Shadow” Morton and shot into the charts with massive hits on the Red Bird label including “Remember (Walking In The Sand),” “Leader Of The Pack,” “Give Him A Great Big Kiss,” “I Can Never Go Home Anymore,” “Give Us Your Blessings” and “Out In The Streets.” The Shangri-Las gave a voice to real teenagers, with Mary’s explosive lead vocals delivering emotion-packed melodramas that made them one of the most consistently exciting groups of the day.

HOCUS POCUS
Hocus Pocus is UFO English rock band’s original band name. Hocus Pocus meaning: sleight of hand or magic word. Magic indeed! The band was formed in London in 1968.They became a transitional group between early hard rock and heavy metal and the new wave of British heavy metal - with space rock roots and a heavy blues rock sound. Lead singer Phil Mogg, guitarist Mick Bolton, bassist Pete Way and drummer Andy Parker formed the band in 1968. Having originally called themselves Hocus Pocus, the group changed their name in October 1969 to UFO, in honour of the London club where they were spotted by Noel Moore, who signed them to the Beacon Records label, headed by Antiguan-born Milton Samuel. Their first album, UFO 1, released in 1970, is a typical example of early hard rock; it includes a heavy version of
Mick Bolton, Pete Way, Phil Mogg, Andy Parker
The aptly titled UFO 1 is the band’s very first album, released in 1970. With a sound throughout more reminiscent of 60s garage rock than the hard rock fans would eventually come to know them for. This was the band at their earliest and most raw and uneven. Yet, even in this early formative period, they showed traces of what was to come. Highlights include covers of Eddie Cochrane’s “C’mon Everybody” and Bo Diddley’s “Who Do You Love” (the same song that would later become a huge hit for George Thorogood). The opening instrumental, “Unidentified Flying Object,” is an interesting cut showing off the band’s “space rock” infancy that has been all but forgotten by fans of the band’s more popular material, as do cuts like, “Treacle People.” The band here could not decide if they wanted to pursue garage rock or space rock, and as any fan knows, a few short years later, they would go after neither of the above. It is uneven and wild in its execution, but the first album from UFO still manages to spawn its share of highlights.
the Eddie Cochran classic “C’mon Everybody.” Over a career spanning 54 years, UFO have released 22 studio albums, 14 live recordings, 16 compilation albums and one album of cover songs. Many believe that UFO began with Michael Schenker on guitar, but the group, originally known as Hocus Pocus, actually has a history that stretches back several years prior. In fact, the band recorded and released two studio albums and one live album prior to Schenker even joining the band! The earliest releases from the band included guitarist Mick Bolton, and the familiar players; vocalist Phil Mogg, bassist Pete Way, and drummer Andy Parker. After going through a number of names (Acid, Hocus Pocus, The Good The Bad And The Ugly) before settling on the UFO moniker and bringing in Parker to do Mogg’s old job.

“Recent performances in London, greeted with wild acclaim, suggest that UFO will shortly be identified as objects of affection by a growing band of convinced observers…They are unmusical, blatantly sexual, and cheerful copyist’s of the Funk-Cooper school (although they reject most of this assessment as unfair). I thought they were one of the worst bands seen in several weeks.” —Chris Welch, Melody Maker Music Paper, 15 January 1972
