What’s New in Arthritis Research
The Kentucky Cabinet of Health and Family Services (KCHFS) reported staggering numbers of people with arthritis: over 1 million adults over 18 years of age, 35.6 percent of women and 28.1 percent of men. These people experience limitations at work, socially and in their daily activities. They rely on research to maintain a good quality of life.

No Medicare Part B Coverage By Jamie Lober, Staff Writer In January of this year, researchers found the high-dose flu shot is best for people who have rheumatoid arthritis. Scientists in Sweden have been studying a pair of proteins called IL-4 and IL-13, which are created when the immune system detects parasitic infections or allergens. The scientists are gaining a better understanding of these proteins in the hope of finding more effective treatments for inflammation and its related disorders. Also in January, Astellas Pharma’s Smyraf received regulatory approval for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety authorized the drug to be used for patients with rheumatoid arthritis who do not respond adequately to disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs. Since arthritis requires a long-term treatment plan, it is important to have a medication that is tolerable. It is also important to get arthritis under control. Researchers say 19 percent of adults with arthritis have frequent mental distress and 32 percent have a history of depression. If you have a good treatment plan, you are more likely to avoid related mentalhealth issues.
Some studies are revealing nutrition can make a difference with arthritis. Specifically, certain foods contain anti-inflammatory properties, including fish such as salmon and trout, which are high in omega-3 fatty acids. Fish is also a good source of vitamin D, which is often deficient in people with rheumatoid arthritis. The American Heart Association suggests having at least two servings of fatty fish each week in order to benefit from its anti-inflammatory properties. Other studies show a plant-based diet can help symptoms improve or even disappear. Researchers found plant-based foods reduce inflammation and promote a healthy gut environment because they are often high in fiber. Fruits, vegetables and grains are extremely helpful. Both the Arthritis Foundation and the National Council on Aging recommend tai chi to manage arthritis, reduce fall risk, increase balance and flexibility and decrease stress. This Chinese form of exercise is gentle and low impact. The KCHFS says low-impact physical activity can lessen pain and stiffness. There are great programs for both self-management and physical activity throughout the Bluegrass State.
The best approach is to talk to your doctor about the latest developments and strategies to manage arthritis pain and work together to find out what will be the most beneficial for you, since treatment plans are always individualized.
