Community leader Jon Lundin began Rock Valley College Whiz Kids as a summer enrichment program intended for students with high abilities and high interests in special academic areas. NOW, Rock Valley College Whiz Kids continues to provide students in K-8th grade with a variety of academic enrichment opportunities. Through creative teaching strategies, materials, and curricula, Rock Valley College Whiz Kids offers unique, hands-on activities with inventive modes of participation. Rock Valley College Whiz Kids classes are designed to: • Challenge students to learn new material quickly • Explore subjects more intensely than in their current grade-level curriculum • Offer opportunities for students to become acquainted with other students who have similar academic interests • Introduce children to a college environment without the pressure of earning a grade • Provide a supportive environment where students “learn by doing” • Encourage students to apply critical and creative thinking skills to numerous areas of study • Offer a variety of instructional methods to stimulate and challenge students’ interests

Bughouse Chess
(Ages 6-12) Beginning level reading, speaking and writing, designed for U.S. students, learning Chinese as a 2nd language. Covered topics: Greetings and family member, Personal introduction, numbers, dates, countries and languages and occupations. Purchase text at the RVC Bookstore.
(Grades K-8) Bughouse is a chess variant played by 2 teams with 2 players on each team. The games are played with a 5 minute time limit which can create a frenzied game of fast action and surprise attacks. Players on the same team are allowed to pass the pieces they capture to each other and put those pieces into play. The game and rules are explained and practiced at the first session. A mini-tournament is held at the second session. PREREQUISITE: Must know the names of the pieces and how they move and capture.

(Ages 6-12) Our 3-day spring break mini-camp will introduce (people) kids to the goats, right in the middle of birthing season. Come explore the farm, work and play with the animals, and help care for baby goats and their mothers. Bring a sack lunch and snacks daily.
(Grades 6-8) Aspiring Babysitters, and “latch-key-kids” alike, this class is for you! Learn how to get started as a sitter, and how to care for children of all ages, including siblings! Emergency procedures and basic first aid will be discussed. Each graduate will receive a wallet size card stating they have completed the class along with resources to help build their own “Kid-Kit” for use on the job.
Students will use our unique LEGO® kits to build a variety of battling machines. Filmmaking – Beginning
(Grades 4-8) Learn to act for the camera and prepare for work in films, television and commercials. Classic performances in film will be watched, studied, and discussed throughout this intensive class. Learn cold reads, preparation for scenes, internal dialogue, monologues–culminating into scene work with others. Opportunity for instructor edited short scene shot, as sample reel in submission to student and independent films, or large productions. Guest actors and directors will visit to workshop with students.
(Grades 4-8) Bring your ideas from script to screen! Work in groups where you’ll write a script, plan for a shoot, shoot, direct, and edit the film. Learn how to plan and execute the film.
