January 23rd: STEMulations MSI Field Trip January 23rd, 2012 The new STEMulations program servicing students from Boone County was kicked off recently with a field trip to the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago! The STEMulations students and some of their parents were transported from Rock Valley College to the museum by RVC staff on that Monday for a full day science and exploration.

of

Students took part in many interesting experiments and activities while at the museum. The students learned about Earth and the plates that make of the earth’s crust. They learned about the chain reactions that take place to create different types of earthquakes while taking part in an interactive presentation hosted by MSI staff. In addition, the students explored the U-505 submarine, a real submarine that was occupied by German forces during WWII. Students were able to put themselves into the shoes of sailors during war time and re-live what it would be like to live on a submarine. Among the exhibits there was also a 40-foot simulated tornado created by vapor and swirling air that students studied and manipulated. All in all, the field trip was a huge success!

TRiO Day It’s that time of year again where we celebrate Trio day. This year, Elgin Community college will be hosting the Trio Festivities. 

The Event will be held on Saturday February 25th, 2012 from 9:00am to 3:00pm “TRiO:

Changing lives for a Changing World.”

What is TRiO day?... According to the 1986 Congressional resolution, National TRIO Day is meant to focus the nation's "attention on the needs of disadvantaged young people and adults aspiring to improve their lives, to the necessary investment if they are to become contributing citizens of the country, and to the talent which will be wasted if that investment is not made."

Expanding to RVC... The Upward Bound Club Very recently, Upward Bound has expanded its roots to a brand new club at Rock Valley College. This club will have similar goals to that of Upward Bound such as: helping students succeed, College trips, and making a difference in the community. This club is opened to all students who are attending Rock Valley college, which means high school students taking a class will be able to participate! - Selina Diaz, Club President

Upward Bound Creed I am part of the fellowship of Upward Bound. I have the power of knowledge. The die has been cast. I have stepped over the line. The decision has been made. I will graduate from college. I won’t look back, let up, slow down, or back away. I am Upward Bound. My past is my foundation, my present makes sense, my future is secure. I’m finished and done with low living, sight walking, small planning, colorless dreams, tamed visions, mundane talking, cheep giving and dwarfed goals. I am Up-

ward Bound, and my goal is a college diploma.

I no longer need pre-eminence, prosperity, position, promotions, plaudits or popularity. I don’t have to be right, first, tops, recognized, praised, regarded or rewarded. I am Upward Bound, and my goal is a college diploma. My fate is set, my gait is fast, my goal is a college degree, my road is narrow, my way is rough, my companions few, my mission is clear. I cannot be bought, compromised, detoured, lured away, turned back, diluted or delayed. I am Up-

ward Bound, and my goal is a college diploma. I will not flinch in the face of sacrifice, hesitate in the presence of adversity, ponder at the pool of popularity or meander in the maze of mediocrity. I won’t give up, shut up, let up, until I have stayed up, stored up, studied up, paid up, for the cause of education. I am Upward Bound and my goal is a college diploma!
