For as long as Kristin Strey and Colleen (Strey) Rittmeyer can remember, the Rock Valley College Whiz Kids program has been an important part of their summers. That’s because their mom, Elizabeth Strey, has been teaching Whiz Kids classes since 1988, and as soon as they were old enough to enroll, Kristin and Colleen were taking classes and helping mom with hers. “Each year [Kristin and Colleen] would take a few classes while I was teaching. The girls would then spend the rest of the day helping in my classes,” says Elizabeth. “We still have their certificates, showing all of the classes they took. Those were special summers for all of us.”

literary courses like Short Stories (page 23) and Poetry (page 23) this summer Kristin will also teach Trivia Time (page 21), a survey course of academic topics that often come up in academic competitions like quiz bowl. It’s a sensible fit, considering her job is to write questions for academic competitions with National Academic Quiz Tournaments. She’s also an assistant scholastic bowl coach at the Illinois Math and Science Academy.
Those special summers continued throughout the years, and now all three are teaching Whiz Kids courses. Elizabeth is teaching numerous classes this summer, everything from Abracadabra! It’s Magic (page 22) to Zoinks! It’s a Mystery! (page 22). It’s a busy summer of teaching for someone whose “day job” is teaching second Whiz Kids expands grade at Rolling Green School in Rockford. Elizabeth just loves children ’s thinking, teaching; it’s as simple as that. develops their backColleen describes it differently.

“My mom has what I call ‘the teaching disease’ and I have learned a lot just from watching how much she loves what she does, and how much she truly cares about the kids involved,” says Colleen. “She really makes learning fun.”
ground information on a variety of topics, and helps them express their creativity.
”
“My mom’s influence was probably my greatest incentive for teaching Whiz Kids,” says Kristin. “Her inspiration and creativity are always flowing. Colleen is the same way, and that’s something I admire greatly about them both.” Elizabeth is proud to see her daughters following in her footsteps and contributing in their own special ways to a program that has meant so much to her for so many years.

Influenced by her mom, Colleen took to teaching as well. She currently teaches at the International Montessori Academy, a private school in Sycamore. This summer she will teach several Whiz Kids courses, including a new one called Get a Clue (page 22), which she will be teaming up to teach with her sister, Kristin. In addition to teaching Get a Clue with Colleen, and some
“I marvel at the eloquence of their class descriptions, and I am impressed with the classes that they create,” says Elizabeth, noting she would love to sign up for Get a Clue if only she could. If she were to sign up for her daughters’ course, the Whiz Kids family experience would come full circle. Maybe she could even pitch in and help just as her daughters did in her classes many years ago. It would be yet another special summer.

They will eventually be tested for speed, strength and endurance. The robots built in this section of the workshop are not taken home. They are taken apart and the parts are reused to build yet another robotic creation. Tires, motors, gears, wires and controllers are used to move these robots across the floor. After making trial runs, you can modify your designs to increase your robot’s level of speed and/or strength, to meet the testing challenge.
