Rosemont College Online Magazine Dcember 2016 COVER STORY

December’s issue of RoCo is focused on Faith, an especially appropriate topic as Christians around the world find themselves just days away from the Holy celebration of Christ’s birth. But, as a College community the topic has special meaning because we are dedicated and committed, through our Mission, to “welcome all faiths”. This issue features students, faculty, and staff of all religious backgrounds answering the question, “How do you celebrate your faith?”, it explains the celebration of The Seven Fishes, the Hindu concept of dharma, and the way service ties so many Rosemont students to their spirituality, and, last but not least, it highlights some of the many Rosemont traditions of Christmas. We hope you enjoy December’s edition of RoCo! Merry Christmas!

Rosemont students, Aaron Pinninti ’17 and Elizabeth Walton ’18 took 1st Prize at the 19th Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium for Biological and Chemical Sciences Physics in Motion

When studying the characteristics of projectile motion in his physics class, Professor Perkinson relocates his classroom outdoors to follow the flight of steel balls launched with varying velocities at different angles. The lab concludes with a target shooting contest to see which group can most accurately calculate the correct velocity and angle to launch a projectile in order to land it in a cup.

Rosemont Students Research and Publish

Research conducted by Rosemont College undergraduate students was recently published as part of Professor Michelle Moravec’s article “Till I Have Done All That I Can”: An Auxiliary Nurse’s Memories of World War I.” Students investigated the visual records left by a female war worker in photograph albums and scrapbooks. Each student’s original work was acknowledged in a footnote in the article, as is the custom in the humanities. This research continued in the Fall of 2016. Professor Moravec and her students plan a second publication.

Rosemont College Celebrates Faith

“Rooted in Catholicism, Rosemont welcomes all faiths…” Our updated mission statement calls our attention to this reality on campus. As we strive to “infuse the mission” into our lives on campus, we welcome your thoughts, questions, and ideas on how the College can better celebrate this richness. The campus population is enriched by students professing many different faiths in addition to Roman Catholic teachings. Christian faiths represented include: Baptist, Lutheran, Episcopalian, Seventh Day Adventist, Pentecostal, Methodist, Church of God, Christian Reformed Church, and United Church of Christ. Rosemont also has students who practice Judaism, Islam, Hindu, and Buddhism. During the Wednesday weekly Reflection Session, known as 9:09, students engage in a variety of ways to explore how faith comes into play in their lives. Commonality as well as difference in tradition is shared among students which enriches all present.

Meet Dr. Jennifer Jackson and Dr. Erik Ranstrom. They teach religious studies and are involved with bringing together and teaching all faiths.

The Seder Supper, a long-standing tradition at Rosemont celebrated near Passover, has educated students in this major Jewish celebration. The Iftar Dinner after Ramadan has been observed in years past. We want your ideas about how we can become a strong Inter-faith Community as well as a richly diverse one. WORLD RELIGION DAY ANYONE?

Rosemont College Adopt-a-Sister Event For the past several holiday seasons, The SHCJ Sisters living in New Sharon have been serenaded and gifted by Members of the Rosemont College community. Sometime before Thanksgiving, the Wish List that has been supplied by the Sisters is distributed for volunteers to adopt-a-Sister by supplying the gift she has requested. Gifts given have typically been lotions, socks, chocolates, gift cards, stamps, plus the Sisters regularly receive a donation for a New Year’s Eve treat—usually milk shakes! Read how Katie Pavlick ’18 and Sister Florence spend time together as part of the Adopt-a-Sis program at Rosemont.

First year students share their thoughts on celebrating faith.

Gifts are delivered to the Sisters with great fanfare by the dozens of well-wishers comprised of Rosemont’s administrators, faculty, staff, and students. The first few bars of Here Comes Santa Claus is the melodious signal given by Roy Fisher and Dan Mason that prompts the lively procession led by President Hirsh into the dining room where the Sisters are waiting. The singing continues with the carols that the Sisters have selected as their favorites, and concludes with a stirring rendition of We Wish You a Merry Christmas. Then the Campus Carolers break ranks in order to sit and chat with the Sisters as the gifts and treats under the direction of Santa Claus, AKA Butch Brown, are distributed. And a good time is had by ALL!

Most of Providence Center’s students come from Fairhill’s substantial Puerto Rican and Latino population. This year’s event will be held on Saturday, January 7th in Cardinal Hall. Each child will be treated to a festive lunch, games, and a special gift from “The Three Kings”. Donations to purchase gifts for each child and to off-set the event expenses are welcome, and can be made via Kevin Gary at kevin.gary@rosemont.edu.

Four Rosemont Alumni are back in class!

and Emerging Medical Technologies:

A Symposium 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m Friday, April 21, 2017

The Rotwitt Theater of the McShain Performing Arts Center Dorothy McKenna Brown Science Building Rosemont College, Bryn Mawr PA

The Many Ethical Implications of Emerging Technologies

The past decade has witnessed ever-increasing advances in innovative medical technologies including gene-editing, robotic surgery, novel pharmaceuticals, 3-D bio-printing and other forms of personalized medicine. One recent example that made headlines is the CRISPR genomic-editing technique, which Science Magazine called the “breakthrough of the year” in 2015, identifying it as one of the most important tools invented in the past century. Such innovations have the potential for vastly improving human health and medical care in ways unimaginable in the not too distant past, through tissue-based treatments for cancer and other diseases, the growth and transplantation of animal organs, and repairing genetic defects in embryos. As is often the case with emerging technologies, with the potential benefits come a host of ethical questions concerning their development and implementation: Does altering the human germ line cross a moral threshold? Is “human enhancement” a moral imperative? Will access to such technologies and treatments be problematic for certain social, economic, and racial groups? How will healthcare policy take into consideration the widest possible range of stakeholder perspectives?

sponsored by the Institute for Ethical Leadership and Social Responsibility

This symposium brings together a group of nationally and internationally recognized experts in medical technology, bioethics, and health care. An opening keynote presentation will be followed by three breakout sessions and a culminating panel discussion. For more information and to register click here.
