Rosemont College Online Magazine January 2018 COVER STORY
Welcome to January. It is the time of year when many hit the reset button. Some make resolutions to improve the quality of their lives. Others slow down, turn inward, and hunker down for the long, dark days of winter. Regardless of our approach to the new year, there is something that happens for each of us as we turn the page of the calendar, try to remember to use the new date, and at Rosemont, start a new semester – we witness the passage of time. The old adage, “Time waits for no one,” exists for good reason. Whether we want them to or not, and without any effort from us, seconds turn into minutes, minutes into hours, hours into days, days into weeks, weeks into months, and months into years. And, because we cannot control time, our best course of action is to appreciate it and to live it fully. So, this January and throughout this new year of 2018, we at RoCo invite you to remember to cherish all that life offers. Count your many blessings. Spend time with those you love. And, as a member of this Rosemont College community, stop for a moment and think about how your time at Rosemont has impacted your life. The time that you spend as part of this community, whether as a student, faculty member, staff member, or alumna or alumnus, is a part of your story – a part of that passage of time for you – so make the most of it this new year by appreciating and living the POWER of small fully each day! This issue of RoCo highlights much of what is to come for the spring semester. We hope you enjoy reading it, as much as we enjoyed putting it together. And remember, we love to hear from you, so be in touch!

Happy New Year! While it is hard to believe, it is true – 2018 is upon us! It is my hope that this new year will bring everyone in the Rosemont College community many blessings in every aspect of their lives. The year ahead promises to be an exciting one for the College. This May, we will break ground on the Community Center. As you know, Phase Two of this exciting project will be the first large-scale construction of this magnitude on campus since Lawrence Hall was built in 1968. The Community Center will be a “town hall commons” on campus for use by students, faculty, staff, and members of the local community. When Phase Two of construction is complete, the 67,000 square-foot modern facility will serve the needs of 21st century students, as well as the thousands of local community members who utilize Rosemont’s facilities each year. As you might recall, the College’s accreditors, the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, have also articulated the need for a Community Center on campus. The Community Center is scheduled to open in August of 2019. We will mark this historic milestone with a ground breaking ceremony on Reading Day, Tuesday, May 1st. More details will follow in the coming months, but for now please mark your calendars and plan to join us. – President Hirsh

Professor Dumas and students in her Ecology class spent a Friday night at the Hidden Valley Owl Station in Friedensburg, PA, with researchers from the Ned Smith Center for Nature and Art. The class observed the banding process and learned about data collected on captured individuals for assessing the health of the owl population and migration pattern. They adopted the female Saw-whet Owl shown in the pictures and named her Oikos, pronounced “ekos”, after the Greek word for ecology.
