Rosemont College Online Magazine March 2019
Isn’t it hard to believe today is the first day of March? As we look around Rosemont’s campus, we can see that Spring is just around the corner. There are some green shoots coming out of the cold earth. The daylight lasts longer each day. And, of course, the frenetic pace of the semester is picking up. We are just 72 days away from Commencement! Really, we are. But, there is a reason that March is called “the cruelest month” --- we can taste Spring, yet we still bundle up against the cold, fight the winter blahs, and deal with our mid-semester workload of assignments, planning, and all the rest. That is why we at RoCo are grateful that as we put this issue together for you, we were reminded of all that this Spring semester has brought to Rosemont and all that the next 72 days will bring to us. There is a lot for which to be excited, and even more that makes us proud. We hope that this Spring Break each of you, whether you get to enjoy having a Break or not, will take a moment to give yourself a true “break.” Pause for a few moments. Reflect on all that this academic year has meant to you so far. Think about the next 72 days. Ponder what makes you excited and proud. Spring will be here before we know it! Happy Reading. #RoCo #RoCoWelcomesSpring #RoCoLove
As I write this, Raven Basketball Fever has overtaken our campus! It has been so exciting! I am so very proud that our women’s and men’s basketball teams were crowned CSAC champions, and have earned bids in the NCAA Tournament - a first in Rosemont basketball history! Whether during the “watch party” for the Division III selection show in Cardinal Hall this past Monday, Wednesday’s Send-Off Pep Rally for both teams, or through the incredible interaction and response for both teams on social media, it is clear that the entire Rosemont College community shares my pride and my excitement. And, whether our teams win or lose, I know that the entire Rosemont community will still share that sentiment with me, too. It is good to be a Rosemont Raven! Of course, it is more than basketball, too. This issue of RoCo will treat you to a recap of the highlights of the Spring semester, so far, and give you a preview of what is to come. So know that whether you are in the classroom, on the basketball court, or in your office, I am grateful for all that you do each day to make the POWER of small and Raven Pride come alive every day!

Kelly’s Throwback Night
Alumnae of the 80s & 90s Pack Kelly’s On Saturday, February 23rd, a record showing of alumnae who graduated from Rosemont in the 1980s and 1990s packed Kelly’s in Bryn Mawr. Although Kelly’s has changed since their days at Rosemont, the fun and the friendship these alumnae enjoyed did not change at all. As alumni and their guests mixed and mingled, they enjoyed free drinks and food. Many generously donated to the Experience Fund to receive a limited edition “Once a Rosemonster, Always a Rosemonster” water bottle. The event, sponsored by the Office of Alumni Relations, promises to become an annual tradition. If you missed out, join us next year!

Symposium 2019
Machines, Minds, and Morality: Ethics in a Changing Technological World
This year’s symposium on Friday, April 5th will be of interest to anyone who is affected by new technologies – that is, everyone! There is little doubt that advances in technology, particularly in machine learning and artificial intelligence, have improved our lives and helped increase efficiency in a variety of ways. But novel technologies inevitably raise important ethical questions, and in the case of these kinds of technologies, the stakes are quite high. It is crucial to have dialogue on issues such as Big Data and transparency (do you know how much Google knows about you?), algorithmic biases (do some hiring tests exclude persons from low-income neighborhoods?), self-driving cars (should a car be programmed to swerve and potentially kill a pedestrian if it can avoid killing five?), and many others, before these technologies become embedded in our daily lives.
The keynote presentation will be delivered by
David J. Farber, co-Director of the Cyber Civilization Research Center at Keio University (Tokyo). Dr. Farber, who will speak on “The Benefits, Dangers, and Dilemmas of Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence,” was a pioneer researcher whose work on distributed computer systems contributed to the development of the Internet as we know it today. Dr. Farber’s talk will be followed by several breakout sessions and a culminating panel discussion.
