SeaDream expands destinations 112-passenger SeaDream I will make a 15day Atlantic Crossing from her seasonal stint in the Caribbean and then, instead of returning to the Mediterranean as in previous years, will sail to the UK and up the River Thames to dock at London’s Tower Bridge.
SeaDream Yacht Club has added new countries to its itineraries – including Scandinavia and Russia – as well as new ports in Europe plus a maiden call in London. THE TOP-RATING BOUTIQUE CRUISE LINE, SEADREAM, will sail one mega yacht in Northern Europe in 2011 visiting Scandinavia, the Baltic and the Atlantic coasts of France, Spain and Portugal. Among the season’s highlights will be the line’s first-ever call on London; scenic cruising in the Norwegian fjords; daylight sailing through the Stockholm Archipelago; a transit of the Kiel Canal; three days docked at St Petersburg; and calls on Copenhagen, Brittany, Oslo, Helsinki, the Bordeaux wine region and the Jersey Islands. Prior to these voyages, in April 2011 the
Athena’s Down Under FOLLOWING HER HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL DEBUT IN WA and SA last year, Classic International Cruises Athena is set to return on 18 December, for the Australian 2009/10 summer season. During her stay Athena will embark upon a total of 16 voyages, involving 27 port calls around Australia and 32 international port stops throughout Asia and Europe. Highlights of the season will include the first-ever round trip cruise to Tasmania from Adelaide in January and a special romance themed Valentine’s Day voyage to the Margaret River vineyards in February.
“Australians already make up 9% of our clientele, which is quite extraordinary considering your remoteness.” President of SeaDream Yacht Club, Bob Lepisto said the new itineraries should prove ideal for people looking for new opportunities in unusual ports. “I know our Australian guests will particularly like these new experiences and what they bring with them,” Lepisto told CW. “Australians already make up over 9% of our clientele, which is quite extraordinary considering your remoteness from our destinations.” Lepisto said SeaDream was popular with Australians because the boutique vessels had a relaxed atmosphere compared to other luxury lines. “Your casual lifestyle reflects your appreciation of our unique product that eschews formality and is based on a five-star Country Club smart casual ambience,” he said. Full details of itineraries and prices for the new sailings are expected to be available by this weekend.

THIS WEEK AT SEA ... SEA... IT really is a great time to get a taste of luxury cruising at prices we’ve never seen before – or to experience a superior ship sailing new itineraries in Australian waters. For example, in March next year, the Queen Mary 2 is embarking on its firstever Australian coastal voyage. Departing from Sydney on 8 March 2010, the six-night voyage features the QM2’s maiden calls to Adelaide and Fremantle, which would be a really exciting time to be onboard as an Aussie. Prices start at $2199pp and cabins are still available. Talking to ecruising.travel’s business development manager Richard Davey, I realised just what a significant opportunity it is! He pointed out that Australians used to have to pay about $10,000 for a minimum three-week cruise on the QM2, but now you can have a shorter sample for a quarter of the cost. As Richard said, “You can get great value and luxury at the same time whereas before now, value and luxury were usually mutually exclusive terms!” US cruise lines are also a great bargain with their fares priced in US dollars, and the Australian dollar sitting at around 93 US cents today. I was talking this week to people from SeaDream and Silversea Cruises who both reported that 2009 has been the biggest year of bookings from Australians. Karen Christensen, Silversea regional director Australia, said bookings have been so strong that they have decided to introduce ‘Circumnavigation Voyage of Australia’ aboard Silver Shadow in January to February 2011. The 30-day cruise will take in smaller ports including Willis Island, Cooktown, Broome, Exmouth, Albany, Port Lincoln, Kangaroo Island and Geelong, as well as state capitals Sydney, Melbourne, Hobart, Adelaide, Brisbane, Perth and Darwin. “The cruise will go on sale in the next couple of weeks and those interested in joining the voyage will need to make advance registrations with their travel agents to ensure the best suites,” Christensen told Cruise Weekly. Local luxury for the budget buyer! Never before has there been a better time to book a luxury cruise, with huge discounts and shorter segments in Australia now offered by high-end cruise lines. SILVERSEA’S SILVER WHISPER AND NORTH STAR Cruises’ True North have released unprecedented offers that make their cruises more affordable for Australians. A short six-night segment is now available on Silver Whisper departing Cairns on 13 December for an east coast cruise to Sydney via Townsville, Hamilton Island and Brisbane. Ecruising.travel has priced the package, including luxury suite accommodation, shore excursions and complimentary wine and spirits, from $2849pp. Brett Dudley, founder and chairman of ecruising.travel, told CW that it was a “good time to snap up anything luxury”. “With the global financial crisis, people have been conservative in their spending and yet there are a lot more cruises in the region so luxury lines, who very rarely discount, have got huge discounts this year and next year,” he said. Mr Dudley’s top pick is North Star Cruises’ 36-passenger True North, which has “a couple of crackers” in December and January. “The eight-night Southern Safari, roundtrip from Adelaide, is 50% off, which they don’t normally do, and there’s a great Sydney cruise over Christmas that is 20% off,” he said. EseaCruising.com has also launched an exclusive sale on Princess Cruises. “Passengers receive a little bit of Princess
treatment for a heavily reduced price [per person, twin-share] of $219 for inside cabin, $265 for outside cabin and $375 for balcony cabin,” said founder Elisa Chan. The two-night sample cruise from Sydney to Brisbane departs 14 April 2010 or Melbourne to Sydney on 4 March 2010.
Port Everglades’ views its newest Oasis ROYAL CARIBBEAN’S NEWEST VESSEL, OASIS OF THE Seas made her highly anticipated US debut last week, as she sailed into her home-port of Port Everglades in Florida’s Fort Lauderdale, much to the delight of the hundreds of eager onlookers who crammed on-site to catch a glimpse. Weighing in at 225,000 tonnes Oasis of the Seas is almost three times the size of any vessel currently based in Australian waters! New ‘industry first’ features onboard Oasis include ‘Central Park’ the first living park at sea with over 12,000 plants and trees and the ‘Boardwalk’- a family oriented environment with its own hand carved carousel. Written by Roderick Eime, Editor of Cruise Passenger Adventure Guide.
Read quesas, go! eadyy, on your Mar Marquesas, Location: Port of Atuona, Hiva Oa, Marquesas, French Polynesia, 9 deg 48.33 W, 139 deg 01.86 W. If there ever was a perfect outpost as sanctuary for troubled artists, refuge for wayward seamen and magnet for restless adventurers, then the far flung islands of the Marquesas would have to be it. Sure, you can catch one of the easy flights from Tahiti and bum around, but for an authentic arrival, come as Cook, Porter and Melville did; aboard ship. Unless your name is Packer, whose private ship is moored in Tahiti as you read this, you could not conduct a more thorough exploration of this dramatic, geologically youthful archipelago than with the Compagnie Polynesienne de Transport Maritime (CPTM) sailing year round with Aranui 3. Aranui 3 arrives For the trivia-minded, this the location favoured by the disturbed French master, Paul Gauguin, and publicity-exhausted Belgian pop idol, Jacques Brel. Both, despite contrasting, if short, relations with the locals, also chose to be buried here. As with all true adventure cruises, this is a voyage of discovery and learning. Each island port reveals a little more of this fascinating culture and its catastrophic demise. Although modern Marquesans enjoy comforts provided by their French colonial overlords, the 8000 ‘survivors’ are the tail end of a prominent civilisation that numbered around 100,000 until the beginning of the 19th Century. Although freedom to practice (most) ancient arts and customs is restored, white man has a lot to answer for in the Marquesas. The Aranui 3 is the CPTM’s fifth vessel to ply this route, an exclusive freight/passenger operation that has grown from humble beginnings over 50 years. This newest vessel was built to a German design in Romania in 2003 and flies the French flag. GRT is 7000 tons and passenger capacity is 198 across four grades from fancy suites (14) with balcony, nine deluxe staterooms, 63 standard cabins and 18 berths in three dormitory-style rooms. Expect to spend your time mingling with worldly folks from all over. Our near-capacity complement consists of mainly Germans and French, with a scattering of Americans, Canadians, Brits and sundry EU countries. We are bankers and academics, builders and cab-drivers, flashpackers and corporate refugees with an average age of around 60, (but under 50s should also be encouraged). The voyage is a great opportunity to exercise second language skills and swap tall tales with seasoned travellers, friends are made easily in this eclectic human trail mix. With any cruise like this you need personal Aerial view of Aranui3 in the Marquesas versatility -the schedule will almost certainly be interrupted or altered en route due to the primary function of freight delivery. Difficult cargo and sea conditions will also dictate time in port and shore activities offered, there’s no point bleating “... but the brochure says ...!” because it warns you that [stuff] will happen and it does. In my mind, none of this is sufficient reason not to go because the Marquesas are definitely one of the few remaining corners of the world worth every effort. Book through a specialty cruise office, discounts are sometimes offered and ask lots of questions.

Nieuw Amsterdam floats CURRENTLY UNDER CONSTRUCTION IN ITALY, Holland America Line’s newest vessel, ms Nieuw Amsterdam has celebrated its ‘floating out’ milestone in a traditional ceremony harking back to centuries-old shipmaking tradition. Following in the footsteps of ancient shipbuilders, two commemorative coins were sealed in a compartment onboard to bring Amsterdam ‘good fortune’. The coins were minted to celebrate Henry Hudson, who discovered New York’s Hudson river - an exploit which eventually led to the first permanent Dutch settlement in North America, Nieuw Amsterdam. In celebration of the vessels NY connection, Amsterdam will feature NYC themed rooms, including the Manhattan dining room, and a NYC skyscraper inspired art atrium, whilst the youth area will feature an authentic 1981 NY checker cab. The Nieuw Amsterdam is scheduled for delivery in July next year.

THIS DESSERT IS CERTAIN TO END UP ON THE menu of an upmarket cruise liner. A group of young South American chefs have created an appetising new aphrodisiac treat - with the primary ingredients being passionfruit and Viagra. Spokesman Juan Sebastian Gomez from Colombia said: “We got the idea four months ago when we were dealing with a nutrition project for older people. “It occurred to us that we could use passionfruit - with all its connotations and Viagra, and we came up with this dessert.” They said a group of elderly volunteers had helped refine the dessert using a process of trial and error, with the experiment including a trial in which everyone who was given the special dessert “experienced heightened libido”. IF YOU’RE CRUISING INTO AUCKLAND THIS HOLIDAY season be sure to stop in and see the ‘creepy’ 20-metre high Santa atop of a book shop in Queen Street. Locals have complained to the council that Santa’s smile was sinister and his beckoning finger was scaring children. IF THIS GUY IS KEEN ON WATER, HE REALLY SHOULD try a cruise. A US man attracted worldwide attention last weekend after he drove his US$1 million luxury car into a salt marsh. The man said he dropped his mobile phone in the vehicle and was then distracted by “a low flying pelican”, causing him to veer his Bugatti Veyron off the road (below). The car ended up semi-submerged in the pond, and although the police weren’t sure if it was salvageable, in the words of one officer, “Salt water isn’t good for anything”.
