Community News Oxnard police to wear body cameras

The Oxnard City Council recently authorized funds to purchase an additional 50 body cameras for the police department, making it possible for every officer patrolling Oxnard be required to wear a body camera while on duty. The city originally bought 50 cameras in 2016 then supplemented it an additional 100 cameras in 2017. The final set of cameras cost the city $269,000, bringing the total expenditure to $1.4 million over five years, for cameras and data storage. The project was funded by a state grant and the city’s asset seizure fund. Use of body cameras has grown in popularity nationwide in recent years, with 95% of large cities implementing body camera programs. Oxnard initiated the use of body cams in response to a lawsuit by the family of Alfonso Limon Jr., an innocent bystander who was killed by police in 2012.

Bike path to connect Canoga Park with Griffith Park Plans have been announced to build a bike path along the Los Angeles River, connecting Canoga Park with Griffith Park. The 12-mile path will begin at Vanalden Ave. and run to the intersection of Forest Lawn Dr. and Zoo Dr., connecting with four smaller parks along the way. The revitalization of the Los Angeles River has been an ongoing project for several years, with

particular focus given to developing green space near downtown Los Angeles. Extending the project into the San Fernando Valley will offer residents increased access to the river and the recreation opportunities that come with it. The bike path project is currently under review by city officials, but construction is expected to begin in 2020.

Community News Former Amgen campus sells for $22.9 million

T.O. City Council to address homelessness

Conejo Corporate Campus, a former home of local biotech giant Amgen, was recently sold for $22.9 million. Located at 2380-2400 Conejo Spectrum Drive in Newbury Park, the campus consists of two buildings on 11.4 acres of land, offering approximately 200,000 square feet of office space. The property is currently 55% leased. Amgen occupied the space from 2003 to 2011. The campus was purchased jointly by Blue Vista Capital Management and Harbor Associates LLC. Harbor Associates is already a presence in the area, having previously purchased the Think Here campus in Thousand Oaks. Rather than seeking a single, large tenant, the new owners will be reconfiguring the buildings to appeal to smaller corporate tenants, primarily companies looking to lease 8,000-10,000 square feet of space.

The mayor of Oxnard and three members of the Oxnard City Council will face a recall vote on May 1, following a controversial decision to increase wastewater rates. Mayor Tim Flynn, Carmen Ramirez, Bert Perello and Oscar Madrigal each voted for the rate increase in January 2016, an action that was reversed in November 2016 with the passage of Measure M. The recall effort was initiated in May 2017. Oxnard voters will be able to cast their votes by mail or in person, but it is expected that there will be significantly fewer polling places for the special election.
