Massachusetts, and the San Francisco Bay area. It is believed that Los Angeles’ size and proximity to world class academic and medical institutions will provide a compelling argument for biotech startups looking for a home base. BioLA will focus on creating an innovation-friendly ecosystem in the Southland and, in turn, create jobs and promote the County’s public healthcare system. Amgen, which is based in Thousand Oaks, was founded in 1980 and is one of the largest independent biotech companies in the world.

Reagan hologram debuts at presidential library The headquarters of the Dole Food Co. in Westlake Village has been sold to the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation for $50 million. The foundation, which is based in Agoura Hills, had been a tenant on the property at One Dole Drive, and will now, in turn, lease a portion of the land back to Dole. The status of the property had been in flux for several months, with Dole having considered a deal to trade the complex for an income-generating pineapple plantation in Hawaii. Instead, Dole chairman David Murdock sold a 45% stake of the company to Ireland-based Total Produce, along with the option to buy a controlling interest or outright ownership of Dole within the next 5 years. The Hilton Foundation, which makes grants to charities involved in AIDS, homelessness, and other causes, is expected to relocate their headquarters to the site.

Local biotech company joins county to develop hub Local biotech power Amgen has joined with officials from Los Angeles County to help promote the area as a budding biotech hub. Calling the project BioLA, the collaboration will seek to draw attention and investment away from traditionally strong regions in the field, such as Boston and Cambridge,

A holographic representation of former President Ronald Reagan has debuted as a new exhibit at his Simi Valley presidential library. The creation of the project took over a year and a half, as the project producers were tasked with finding an actor of similar appearance to President Reagan. The purpose of which was to digitally alter the actors performance of the selected monologues to match the that of the President. The program is to be presented in the theatre space of the museum and will be a permanent fixture of their collection.

Community News Westlake Village’s craft beer scene is booming

LA ranks highest in housing cost nationwide A recent study by Zillow.com reveals that residents of Los Angeles and Orange counties spend a higher percentage of their income on housing than in any other metro area in the country. Though the Conejo Valley is known for having its share of wine drinkers, the craft beer movement of recent years has found a foothold in Westlake Village. A handful of local brewers have earned a following among beer patrons, especially those who appreciate their close proximity to each other. Three such brewers, nicknamed by some as the “Beermuda Triangle,” even occupy the same industrial park. Five Threads Brewing was the first to join the scene, opening at the Lindero Oaks complex at in 2015. They were soon joined by Westlake Brewing Company and 14 Cannons. Each brewer is unique: Five Threads stands out for its beer variety, WLBC for its expansive venue, and 14 Cannons for stylish presentation. The fourth leg of the WLV brew scene is Figueroa Mountain Brewing Co., the Buellton-based brewery that opened a taproom on Russell Ranch Road, less than a mile from the Triangle.
