Community News Beverly Hills, WeHo ban dockless scooters

Sunset Blvd. developments clear legal barriers In the first half of 2018, the Los Angeles area saw a wave of new bikes and scooters available for rent on city streets. Most popular were dockless scooters, a fleet of which appeared on the westside, seemingly overnight. This vehicles are small, electric-powered, and can be rented with the use of a simple smartphone app. But to the consternation of city officials, dockless scooters can also be abandoned whenever and wherever the user is finished with their ride, leaving a clutter of random scooters around town. This has led to the city councils of Beverly Hills and West Hollywood to restrict their use within their respective city limits. Beverly Hills passed an outright ban on the vehicles for six months, while WeHo allows riders to use dockless scooters, but not to leave them behind. The restrictions have upset younger residents who have appreciated the innovative and affordable option for getting around on local streets. Recognizing this, jurisdictions like Santa Monica and Culver City are working with scooter companies to set reasonable parameters for the use of dockless vehicles in their cities.

Two controversial residential developments on Sunset Blvd., in central Hollywood, have recently cleared significant legal barriers. The owners of the Sunset Gordon Tower recently faced the City Planning Commission and is expecting to have their environmental impact report approved, clearing the way for residents to move back into the tower. The 299-unit building has stood vacant since 2015, when a judge ruled permits for the new building were not properly acquired. Another project, the proposed

Palladium Residences, recently became less legally encumbered when a lawsuit against the project was dismissed in a Los Angeles court. The case had been filed by AIDS Healthcare Foundation, which also backed Measure S, the anti-development initiative that was defeated by voters in March 2017. Once cleared to by city officials, developers will begin construction on two 28-story towers encompassing 730 residential units.

Apple renovating Tower Theatre in DTLA

A former movie theater at the corner of Vermont Ave. and Santa Monica Blvd. will soon be converted into a music venue. The building is located across the street from the Vermont/Santa Monica Red Line station and a block from Los Angeles City College and would have the capacity for crowds of up to 1,200 people. Named Vermont Hollywood, the venue is expected to open in 2019.

Apple has revealed plans to renovate the Tower Theatre in downtown Los Angeles, repurposing the historic space for a retail location. Located at 8th St. and Broadway, the Tower is one of several golden age theaters in the area that have found new life in recent years. Apple plans to restore many of the original features of the 91 year old building, including its terra cotta exterior, as well as conducting standard seismic and structural retrofitting. They also plan to rebuild a portion of the Tower’s original clock tower that was destroyed by an earthquake in the 1970’s.

Westfield Century City’s mall has added a new food option inside their food court. La Vaca, is a new Brazilian barbecue option that offers a unique dining experience by the pound. Here you have the option of the self-service salad bar with or without barbecued meats, plates are then charged according to weight. The salad bar offers a variety of fresh greens and vegetables and dressings. Hot dishes include steamed white rice, feijoada black beans with collard greens, and homemade hot Habanero sauce. Prime cuts such as top sirloin, Brazilian sausage, and chicken breast wrapped with bacon are also available.

This sushi roll and ramen spot in West Hollywood is serving reasonably priced tuna and crispy rice along with some ramen. The menu here also includes appetizers like fried oyster, garlic edamame, fried Brussels sprouts, and hot wings. The restaurant also has a long list of special rolls to order from. Their Akuma roll includes salmon, tuna, yellowtail, crabmeat, avocado, spicy mayo, and sweet mustard. For happy hour, enjoy a ‘buy one, get one’ free lunch ramen special. According to the restaurant, everything here is prepared with high quality, rich taste and made fresh to order.

This intimate 40-seat kappo-style restaurant and bar is located in the heart of Downtown LA. Here you can expect an array of fresh fish and prepared beef and pork dishes. Guests enjoy unique and rare selections of beverages paired with seasonal offerings. The chef, who previously worked at Urasawa and L’Orangerie creates the small plates. Dishes include fried monkfish karaage and rice bowls with mountain vegetables. Shibumi is open Tuesday through Sunday from 6 p.m. until midnight.

Icons of Style: A Century of Fashion Photography, 1911-2011 June 26 – October 21, 2018

The featured exhibition at the Broad is a collection of works that focus on the passage of time, dealing with themes such as nostalgia and decay. The exhibition features film and video pieces as well as paintings, sculpture, and photos, and 40 of the 55 works are on display at the Broad for the first time. The exhibition is on display in the Broad’s first floor galleries and is included with regular admission to the museum.

Icons of Style focuses on the transcendence of functional fashion photography into great works of art, beginning with the pioneering work of Edward Steichen in early years of the 20th century, through the influential photos of Richard Avedon, Helmut Newton, and Herb Ritts. The exhibit features over 160 photos, as well as a sampling of costumes, illustrations and magazine covers.
