Community News A New Scale of Luxury Living Set for Miracle Mile

There’s a new deluxe apartment in the sky hitting Miracle Mile. While a completion date has not been set, a new 42-story art deco inspired residential tower is being planned for the heart of Miracle Mile. Under development by the family of Wilshire Boulevard property developer Walter N. Marks, the $400 million project will take over the site of the Staples Office supply store on the Wilshire/La Brea block. This falls right along the Purple Line subway station and serves as a major driver for the project as the family expects a slew of new residents to seek out leases along the mile. The tower will be comprised of 371 apartments and high-end amenities that include a bowling alley, golf simulator, dog-grooming space, wine tasting counter and yoga studio with 10 percent of the units being set aside for affordable housing. The family has owned the property that the luxury tower will break ground on for around 50 years.

Sustainable Buildings Council Debuts Prefab Prototype Home

The Sustainable Building Council-a group formed by filmmaker Christian Johnston has debuted an environmentally friendly way to build traditional affordable housing. The ARCspace prototype debuted in the Arts District and is seemingly getting the seal of approval from Mayor Garcetti who expressed support for the design. The 1,240 square foot home is made of four modules fabricated off site and assembled at the location. Once on-site the assembly process is less than 48 hours and cost close to $150 per square foot. Meant as a “living lab” and test case for the council’s prefab method, the ARCspace is built out of new materials instead of recycled containers which sometimes require cleaning for potential hazards. Johnston has big visions for the future of the council’s developments and says the design allows for

more growth and custom configurations.

Interactive Map Details LA's Publicly Owned Properties

There is a great deal of city-owned properties throughout L.A. So much so that L.A. controller Ron Galperin has developed a “Property Panel”. The online, interactive map of properties in the city will show which entities are owned by the city of Los Angles which includes the county, the state and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. Galperin hopes the site will serve as an online resource to help the city address the need for affordable housing. Initial results of the map showed a total of 7,500 city owned properties which Galperin says have the potential to be “affordable, workforce, and senior housing, or economic and business developments.” The site, www.lacontroller.org, he says should “get governments to think more strategically”, about existing properties.

Eighteenth-Century Pastel Portraits August 28, 2018 – October 13, 2019

The Broad is hosting this special exhibit of artwork by AfricanAmerican artists who were active during the civil rights and black power movements of the 1960’s and 1970’s, and into the early years of the conservative Reagan administration. LA artists Charles White, Betye Saar, and William T. Williams are among the 60 artists whose work is featured. The exhibition is organized by Tate Modern and presented locally by Art + Practice, a Leimert Park-based organization.

Hollywood Dream Machines: Vehicles of Science Fiction and Fantasy explores cult classic films and stories that have envisioned fantastic futuristic worlds, technologies, characters and cars. Through props, design drawings and physical vehicle models, this exhibit brings pop culture’s visions of dystopian, utopian, and science fiction worlds to life.

Celebrating a medium that is often overlooked in other time periods, this exhibit delves into the favored form of portraiture in late 18th century Europe. Pastels allowed the artist to create classically beautiful works without the arduous process that oil painting often requires. This flexibility coincided with the growing class of people who patronized portrait artists, creating a unique body of work that represented both an evolving craft and an evolving society.
