Good news for those who bike and walk in LA: Mayor Eric Garcetti has announced that the city has received more than $40 million in state funding for new bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure in South LA and the SFV. That includes $18.8 million for three miles of bike and walking paths along the Los Angeles River. The new trails would stretch from Vanalden Ave. in Reseda to Burbank Blvd., just north of the Sepulveda Dam. The project is part of a larger effort to complete a biking path alongside all 51 miles of the river, from Canoga Park to Long Beach. A continuous trail is one of 28 projects that Metro aims to complete in time for the 2028 Olympics, and work on paths that would close those gaps is expected to wrap up in the next six years. The remaining $24.8 million in funding awarded by the state last week will go toward new infrastructure along two South LA streets: Broadway and Manchester Blvd. The safety-minded overhaul is officially known as the Broadway Manchester Active Transportation Equity Project. Los Angeles real estate developer Verono Homes has begun building its first project in North Hollywood, called Outline at NoHo. The project, at 11312-11326 Victory Blvd., will feature rows of threestory buildings with a shared driveway. Los Robles Hospital and Medical Center has spent $1 million to purchase a Stryker Mako RoboticArm for its Thousand Oaks Surgical Hospital. The robotic arm was added to provide greater precision and accuracy for patients undergoing hip and knee replacements, according to a statement from Southern California Orthopedic Institute. Improved precision during surgery has led to quicker patient recovery and shorter hospital stays. With the addition of Mako, the Thousand Oaks location is the only facility to provide robotic assisted joint replacement to patients between San Luis Obispo and Glendale. “I am excited to provide patients in this community the best existing technology in hip and knee replacement. It is amazing to see how quickly patients recover and are able to do the activities they love pain-free, Dr. Harpreet Bawa, orthopedic surgeon with the institute, said in a statement. Bawa performed the first Mako RoboticArm assisted surgery in November 2018 and has recently completed his 50th robot-assisted surgery.

The Broad is hosting this special exhibit of artwork by AfricanAmerican artists who were active during the civil rights and black power movements of the 1960’s and 1970’s, and into the early years of the conservative Reagan administration. LA artists Charles White, Betye Saar, and William T. Williams are among the 60 artists whose work is featured. The exhibition is organized by Tate Modern and presented locally by Art + Practice, a Leimert Park-based organization.
This exhibition explores the convergence of two powerful threads of American pop culture, baseball and music. Focused on songs written about the game, and how music is played in stadiums, the exhibit features sheet music, handwritten lyrics, and even the microphone that Harry Caray used to sing during the 7th inning stretch.
Celebrating a medium that is often overlooked in other time periods, this exhibit delves into the favored form of portraiture in late 18th century Europe. Pastels allowed the artist to create classically beautiful works without the arduous process that oil painting often requires. This flexibility coincided with the growing class of people who patronized portrait artists, creating a unique body of work that represented both an evolving craft and an evolving society.
