The City of Santa Monica has taken steps to purchase an emission-free bus for its Big Blue Bus system. The city council recently approved an alteration to its contract with bus manufacturer Gilling Corporation to acquire an electric bus for its fleet for an additional $429,559. It is expected that the vehicle will be delivered by the end of the year. City officials indicate that this first electric bus is part of a pilot program of 10 electric vehicles to serve as a sub-fleet to the regular BBB vehicles. Should the program prove to be successful, the city would begin a transition to a fully zero-emission fleet. The city currently operates 200 transit buses through BBB, all of which are powered by natural gas engines. Natural gas powered buses cost about $2.80 per mile to operate, while electric buses cost approximately $4.05 per mile, but are much more environmentally friendly.
