Community News Santa Monica announces dockless scooter program

The City of Santa Monica has announced a pilot program that will formalize the dockless scooter boom that has recently swept the area. Under the city’s Shared Mobility program, four companies --- Bird, Jump, Lime, and Lyft --- will be permitted to operate up to 2,000 scooters and 1,000 e-bikes in the city, though each company will begin with a total of 750 vehicles. In addition to restricting the number of scooters and e-bikes in the city, the program will also forbid their use on the Santa Monica pier, the beach bike path, and in the city’s public parks. The participating companies will also be required to pay a $1 per vehicle, per day, usage fee. Initial reports that Bird and Lime, the most prominent scooter companies in the area, would be excluded from the 18 month pilot program led the startups to stage a “Day Without Scooters” protest in August, during which all of their scooters were temporarily deactivated. Ultimately the city elected to work with all 4 companies, rather than just Lyft and Jump, a company that is owned by Uber, the ridesharing giant.

Pedestrian-only area coming to Playa Vista The owners of the Runway at Playa Vista project are moving forward with a plan to restrict a portion of the property to pedestrians only. A central street, Millennium Drive, will be blocked to motorized vehicles,

allowing for the creation of a walk-friendly promenade that the owners believe will foster a “downtown” area for patrons. In addition to changing the traffic flow, plans call for the addition of outdoor seating and landscaping to enhance the area’s aesthetics.

Broadway apartments break ground

Construction is underway on an expansive apartment complex at 500 Broadway, in Santa Monica. The mixeduse development will take over the space once occupied by a Fred Segal store and will feature 249 residences, as well as 55,000 square feet of commercial space. The project’s design calls for 4 mid-rise tower structures, each seven stories high, joined by pedestrian bridges. The building’s footprint also allows for courtyards and setbacks that would facilitate patio dining for a ground floor restaurant. Construction is expected to be completed in 2020.
