Community News Public market to break ground in Culver City

A new commercial development will soon be built on at the corner of Washington Blvd. and Centinela Ave. in Culver City. Located on two currently vacant lots on either side of Centinela, the project will be a marketspace where local chefs and business owners will be able to sell their products directly to the public, in a fashion similar to the Grand Central Market in downtown LA. Regency Centers, the developer of the project, recently announced that they will be partnering with Urbanspace, a company that specializes in public markets, to curate and operate the market. Construction will begin in Fall 2018 and is expected to last until early 2020.

Two mixed-use projects planned for West LA vacant land Developers are planning two separate midrise mixeduse projects in West LA, replacing existing commercial structures with projects that include apartments. The first, located at 11628 Santa Monica Blvd., between Barrington and Federal, will be a six-story building containing 99 residential units and over 12,000 square feet of ground level retail space. The owner of the existing strip mall is associated with Sushi Nozawa, the company behind the popular Sugarfish restaurant chain. The second new mixed-use project is located at 12001-12021 W. Pico Blvd., just east of Bundy Drive.

Plans for the new development call for a building that also stands six stories and contain 80 apartments and approximately 4,000 square feet of retail space. The project would require the demolition of three commercial buildings that are currently occupied by a handful of pet stores and restaurants. No timeline has been announced for either project.

Supportive housing coming to Venice

A new supportive housing project is set to be built in Venice, an area that has long been plagued by homelessness. The new development, Rose Avenue Apartments, will create 34 studio and onebedroom residences for formerly homeless people and families. The design for the project calls for a U-shaped low-rise building with a contemporary faรงade, replacing a single-story structure that currently house the headquarters of Venice Community House. Located at 718-722 E. Rose Ave., the project is across the street from a Whole Foods location and is convenient to the public transportation routes of Lincoln Blvd.

Community News Eldercare tower coming to Westwood

Progress in fight against homelessness

A new tower will soon be rising above Wilshire Blvd. in Westwood. Belmont Village Senior Living have filed plans with the City of Los Angeles to build a 12-story structure in the parking lot of Westwood Presbyterian Church, providing homes and care to local senior citizens. If approved, the tower will include 176 residential units, as well as a fellowship hall and administrative offices for the church. Located at 10822 Wilshire Blvd., the tower would stand a few feet from the Purple Line station being built at the intersection of Wilshire and Westwood.

Officials recently announced that the number of homeless people in the county of Los Angeles has decreased to 53,195 people, a drop of 3% since 2017. This marks the first improvement in four years and follows a 23% increase from 2016 to 2017. The decline also mirrors increased government efforts to provide housing and services to LA’s homeless population. Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti recently announced plans to build 15 emergency shelters around the city, and the City Council also unanimously passed a resolution to build transitional housing in each of the city’s 15 districts. Among Garcetti’s announced shelters is a project located at 11010 Santa Monica Boulevard, at a city-owned parking lot in West LA. Recent changes to state law allows the city to build the shelters quickly, bypassing much of the typical red tape that is typically required.
