Glenelg Product Design Industrial Design Intern Dates Employed June 2016 – July 2016 Employment Duration 2 months At Glenelg Design, I was working on various projects using skills such as sketching, Solidworks and Cinema4D. As Glenelg work quite closely with Eve Products, one of the projects was to create an animation of the component I created at Eve to show to the sales team how it could be used. Other projects were given by companies such as Amaray. Eve Products Limited Industrial Design Intern Company Name Eve Products Limited Dates Employed March 2016 – June 2016 Employment Duration 4 months During my second internship at Eve Products, I was tasked with designing a component to connect together extrusions to form a graphic display. I took this from initial sketching all the way through prototyping with 3D prints to designing for manufacture at the local injection moulder. PolyPhotonix Industrial Design Intern Dates Employed March 2015 – June 2015 Employment Duration 4 months Polyphotonix and Iconet Ltd tasked me and a team of 2 others to develop one of their products, the Noctura sleep mask for people with diabetic retinopathy. The aim was to create a more comfortable sleep mask to contain the 'pod' which emitted light into the user's eyes at night. This involved a lot of prototyping and testing to find the best solution. Eve Products Limited Industrial Design Intern Dates Employed March 2015 – June 2015 Employment Duration 4 months Working with Stuart English of Northumbria University, myself and two others had the task of designing a cardboard roller banner. This project was very prototype heavy as each iteration needed to be tested in card to see if it would still work. I was able to use a CNC cutting table at Eve which greatly sped up the process. The product is now being sold as the "Leaf Roller Banner".

CABIN COG

Introducing: The Cabin Cog! A revolutionary way to prevent spills in turbulent conditions, whilst retaining the authentic drinking experience. The Cabin Cog was chosen to be developed further as a placement project by the British Airways pilot who set the brief.

Made of flexible PS (polystyrene), the cabin cog is lightweight, re-usable and recyclable. The flexibility allows the Cog to fit into a variety of cups and stay in place.

Project in collaboration with: Ben Ackerly, Chris Leach, Rory McDonald, Charlie Richardson and Laura Van-Krieken.

NHS - CHEMO BUS

York hospital oncology department wanted to find a way to provide chemotherapy treatment to patients who lived in rural areas, without them coming into hospital. This is where the idea for a treatment bus came about.

To make the project a more thorough investigation, we split into groups. These groups included Inspiration, Branding and Awareness, Physical Geography, the Bus itself and Data and Logistics. My group were looking into Data and Logistics.

There were two main elements to my group’s work: a patient support network, and a home blood test kit.

Home blood testing kit The purpose of the home blood test kit is to remove the necessity for the patient to travel into hospital for pretreatment blood testing. The exterior of the box is plain, to retain confidentiality. Each kit includes sterile swabs, lancets, collection bottles and an instruction leaflet for testing. A returns box is included, with prepaid first class post. The kit, combined with the app solves many of the problems raised by our research into rural chemotharpay patients.

STARTACART “Startacart is a service that offers small businesses a short-term portable platform on which they can sell their products without the overhead expenses of owning a shop or unit. The aforementioned portable platform is a bicycle cart with space to store products (in the same way as a market stall), with optional attachments that cater for their area of business. Our profit will be made by renting the bicycle carts to clients for an agreed period of time.

The bike can be hired for a minimum of 2 days up to a month. The cart can then be purchased on a monthly contract if the client want to carry on trading. View the full business plan at: issuu.com/rodforbes/docs/startacart

24 Hour Challenge Increasingly, there is a trend of ‘fragmented eating’, where people forefit their regular meals in exchange for snacks. Design innovation company Wood For Trees (Bristol) set the brief to try to improve the experience by adapting to this new eating style through a service or product. This is where Foodly comes into play. My idea earned me an interview for a possible placement with Wood For Trees.

“Foodly is a smartphone app that reminds the user to maintain a healthy diet on-the-go.”

This is Alex. Alex is a recently graduated young professional working in a busy city. She likes to work hard as well as play hard. This can leave her short of time when it comes to sourcing breakfast and lunch. Because of this, Alex often snacks instead of having a proper meal, which can make it difficult for her to keep track of her daily nutritional needs.

When passing a shop near a meal time, Foodly will notify the user that it is time to eat, and provide shop-specific food recommendations.

Aimed at students and young professionals, Foodly learns and adapts to the user’s daily routine to provide the best suggestions at the best possible times.

Foodly provides healthy snack ideas, shop bought meal suggestions and food info to meet your daily needs. Factors such as budget and gender can be edited to tailor the suggestions to each user.

RSA - THE GOOD LIFE 2.0

The Good Life 2.0 Use design to empower people to better prevent, detect, treat and possibly reverse long-term health

Inject discreetly and conveniently. Anywhere.

For this project, I decided to look into type 1 diabetes and how I could improve the experience of the self injection process. After some background research, I found that there are three main type of self-injection:

Syringe

Insulin Pen

Pump Having summed up the pros and cons of each method, it was clear that there was no middle ground between the cheapness of the injection pen or syringe, and the discretion of the pump. To confirm my findings, I asked nurses and patients their opinions. You can view the full discussion I created on Reddit using the QR code below.

THE IDEA The infusion set patch is 2cm across (excluding adhesive patch) requires one injection and stays on for three days.

Long lasting insulin can be injected directly into the infusion set to avoid mixing with the rapid acting insulin in the extension tube

If necessary, the extension tube can be detached from the infusion set. For example when bathing or exercising.

The injection set conveniently clips onto the belt or can be tucked away.

“I like your idea really much. I think a would use it especially in winter months. Those days would be so much easier and more discret with. It also saves needles.” Alex Völmle, 23 - T1 Diabetic from Germany

The injector set allows a syringe or pen to dose the user without having to pierce or expose the skin.

The extension tube if flexible enough to be routed under or through multiple layers of clothing.

“If this idea can be produced using bio-safe materials and a clean environment can be maintained, then I think this idea would benefit thousands! - Practising Nurse from Saville Medical Group, Newcastle upon Tyne

FEATURES As with a normal injection, the site can be wiped with an alcoholic swab to sterilise the area.

Long lasting insulin (injected once a day) can be injected directly into the infusion set and through the cannula to avoid mixing with rapid acting insulin.

The extension tube can be detached and the infusion set plugged to prevent contaminants from getting in.

Healable

membrane stops backflow and leakage when dosing with a needle.

DERMIS Soft cannula

SUBCUTANEOUS LAYER

MUSCLE

Clip allows the user to attach the injection set to clothing out of the way.

Expected manufacture price per unit would be only ÂŁ0.50.

Extension tube delivers insulin from the syringe/ pen to the infusion set. Small inner diameter reduces wasted insulin from priming.

ARC

Arc was designed to draw attention without being too flashy. The contrasting materials, plywood grain, glowing rocks and arc itself combine to create interesting views from all angles, as well as being a functional light feature.

MODEL MAKING LEGO MAN Create from scratch a 3x size lego minifig. Materials used: MDF, Jelutong, Pink Modelling Foam. Processes: Precision measuring with digital calipers, plan drawing on Illustrator, manufacturing using a range of workshop machinery.

HEIRARCHICAL FORMS Create a series of interesting shapes whose theoretical ‘value’ increases each time. These forms were made using gray foam, painted with 13 layers of white emulsion. Each layer was carefully sanded with increasing grit to give a silky smooth finish.

NON LITERAL FORM Create a form with no literal use, but looks like an electrical gadget/device.

DIGITAL PROJECTS

Here is a selection of work made using computer applications. Using Solidworks, I modelled a unipin Fine Liner pen. This proved challenging as I had to cut each component of the pen in half to find out the exact dimensions inside and out. I then rendered it using Photoview 360, and graphics drawn in Adobe Illustrator. Rhino5 was used to create the wristwatch, and was rendered with VRay. I measured my own watch very carefully with digital calipers to create an accurate representation. As for the Aston Martin wrapper, the brief set was to create a chocolate bar under a certain brand. Here, I had to examine the brand values and apply them to a product not normally associated with the brand. Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator were used to make this wrapper.
