Peru: Forestry Reform
Background
Approximately 10 years before the year 2000 the Peruvian government initiated changes in forestry and wildlife sector, changing the paradigm of “extraction” to “sustainable management”. In 2009 the country had a conflict with the indigenous people in the jungle claiming greater participation.
“Forestry reform" started with the purpose of ensuring sustainable forest management for the benefit of its citizens, especially those who live in and belong to peasant and native communities A legal framework was developed with the purpose of achieving sustainable forestry management and legal trade of forestry products. This is a political decision that has been the supported by the last 2 administrations and we expected it to be supported by the next one.
VISION: Comprehensive forestry management

LESSONS LEARNED Título del chart
Involve civil society and native communities: participation from the beginning
Be simple… a 10 years kid can understand Be open… we can learn a lot from indigenous people Be patient… long process… long discussions… but is more sustainable
Building trust… with the people… other agencies… long process Partnerships essential at all levels: we must work togheter challenges are too complex, resources and capacity too limited Transforms competition to cooperation Partners must agree and focus on mutual goals and priorities Prior consultation is not and obligation for us… we have the conviction… this is the difference…
