H3 was commissioned to plan and design the renovation of the historic Brooklyn Paramount Theatre at Long Island University. The Theatre opened its doors in 1928 as an ornate movie palace, one of the first to show talking pictures. The venue later introduced rock and roll and jazz to the borough, hosting artists such as Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald, and Frank Sinatra. The Paramount was converted into a gymnasium in the 1960s and was utilized by many generations of Blackbirds basketball champions. Along with one of H3’s principals, Rodrigo led the renovation and rejuvenation of the historic Brooklyn Paramount Theatre. Rodrigo produced full design development and construction documents sets. Rodrigo had an essential role in the design phase, developing layouts for the auditorium, grand foyer, new entrance, and common areas. SANTA LUCIA RECITAL HALL A RCHI T EC TUR AL TH ESIS

COMPANY: Universidad Mayor ROLE: Student TYPE: Arts & Culture LOCATION: Santiago Chile SIZE: 22,500 sq. ft / 35,250 sq. ft COMPLETION: 2006 STATUS: Unbuilt

Cerro Santa Lucía Concert Hall was born in response to the lack of mid-sized music venues needed for the development of Santiago’s performing arts scene. After Rodrigo’s thesis research, the results showed that there were two types of venues in Santiago. Big venues, with capacities between 6,000 and 13,000 people, and small venues, with capacities between 100 and 600 people, creating a barrier for emerging artists. The idea was to design a space to cover this gap and, at the same time, create a hotbed for new artists, promoting the growth of the performing arts in Santiago. With a capacity for 1,800 assistance, the main auditorium was conceived as a flexible space with a multipurpose stage. Santa Lucía Concert Hall also has a recording studio, a rehearsal room, and another stage for more intimate performances in the lounge area where the bar/restaurant is. The project tries to be as least invasive as possible. It keeps the existing terrace that can be simultaneously used for outdoor events, with the main auditorium, generating a pole of cultural attraction and unique entertainment in the city. 38

DENVER PERFORMING ARTS COMPLEX COMPANY: H3 / Arquitectonica PARTICIPATION: CS ROLE: Project Architect CLIENT: City of Denver, Arts and Venues TYPE: Arts & Culture LOCATION: Denver, Colorado SIZE: 2.4 Million sq. ft Development COST: $750 Million over 10 Years COMPLETION: 2017 Vision Plan With over 10,000 seats, the Denver Performing Arts Complex is the nation’s second largest center for the arts after Lincoln Center. Designed and constructed in the late 1970’s, DPAC today occupies a wholly different landscape. Urban life has changed, audiences have diversified and traditional funding models are challenged. In response, the City of Denver’s Department of Arts and Venues engaged H3 and Webb Management Services to develop a visionary master plan for the complex and its surrounding district. The master plan will contain a range of tangible improvements. Large scale catalytic projects are envisioned to shift investment from government support towards public-private partnerships. New commercial, residential and hotel development will make the complex viable in the future. In the near to mid term time frames, capital facility improvements will change the character of underused physical spaces. Lastly, an intensive program of activities and events will give exposure to community art organizations, increase revenues, draw new audiences to DPAC. With these changes, DPAC will continue to be a vital and exciting center for Denver’s growing arts community. Rodrigo assisted on the visionary master plan for the Denver Performing Arts Complex District, doing multiple volumetric studies to illustrate feasibility for the commercial and residential towers. 44

FILLMORE MIAMI BEACH JACKIE GLEASON THEATRE COMPANY: H3 / Arquitectonica PARTICIPATION: CS ROLE: Project Architect CLIENT: Live Nation TYPE: Arts & Culture LOCATION: Miami, Florida SIZE: 35,420sq. ft COMPLETION: 2018 STATUS: Unbuilt The story of The Fillmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason Theatre began in 1950 when golden era musicians graced the stage of The Miami Beach Municipal Auditorium. With the television boom in the 1960s, the city of Miami Beach offered Jackie Gleason to move his show in the auditorium. In the 1970s, having been renovated by Morris Lapidus and renamed Miami Beach Theatre of the Performing Arts, it became a regular stop touring Broadway shows. In 2007, the theatre was again reborn, undergoing a multi-million dollar transformation. Operated by Live Nation, the music business’s future, The Fillmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason Theatre showcases the biggest names in live entertainment. Along with the reconfiguration of the demolished areas, H3 envisioned a major renovation with the idea of creating a new destination at Fillmore Lobby. To attract conventioneers and locals, a food/beer hall with hi-speed wifi will work as a meet-up/hangout space during the daytime that co-exists with Fillmore night-time activities using separate entries. Rodrigo helped to develop this idea that also creates a connection between the convention center Grand Lobby, The Hotel, Fillmore Lobby, and the convention center East Lobby, encouraging movement at all levels.

ACE THEATRE COMPANY: H3 / Arquitectonica PARTICIPATION: SD ROLE: Project Architect CLIENT: Private TYPE: Arts & Culture LOCATION: Coconut Grove, Miami, FL SIZE: 18,350sq. ft COMPLETION: 2019 STATUS: Unbuilt

Built around 1930, this art deco motion picture theater located in Coconut Grove was a reunion place for the West Grove black community keeping them organized to fight for equal rights and a better future. Later on, in the ‘80s, it was used as a reunion place for the Cuban community. Currently, the building is in a state of abandonment and has a significant level of deterioration. The assignment was to bring this important building for the Coconut Grove community back to life through a complete interior renovation. Rodrigo worked actively in the design of two proposals for the revitalization of the ACE Theater. As it is a historical building, the original idea consisted of maintaining the existing facade and renovating the first and second floors, adding a third level as a rooftop, and turning the interior space into a multi-use stage that would primarily serve as a jazz club. The spacious rooftop will become a recreational space with an open-air stage, a bar, and restaurant service.
