‘37 Coupe Wild Rod Jeff Vinson, Rock Hill, SC 1937 Ford 3 Window Coupe Text & Photography: Kent Williams

I think just about every car guy would look at Jeff Vinson’s ‘37 Ford and say “That’s not how they built them in 1937.” Probably a good percentage of those same folks would also agree that it would’nt have been a bad thing if they did roll off the ole’ Ford assembly line like this. Every detail has been tended to on this coupe from the billet grille up front to the flush mounted gas cap and brake lights rounding up the rear. Boyd Coddington was the was the brand of choice for the rolling equipment. With 17x7’s up front and 20x10’s out back, the stance is spot on. The shaved door handles keep your eyes moving across the smooth Ford Electric Current Red paint with no distractions. Curved arms on the Valley Swan mirrors flow with the body lines perfectly. Don’t think for one second that the details stop on the outside of this beauty. The chassis is just as impressive. A ton of time was spent on the parts most people will never see. One look under the car will leave you in awe.

Moving to the interior, the first thing that grabbed my attention was the monotone leather complimented by the same glossy paint seen on the exterior. The dash houses VDO gauges so Jeff can keep track of all of the engine’s vital information. The powerplant of this beast is a Chevrolet 350 ZZ4 crate motor with a Holley 750 carb that puts down plenty of power to keep this car in the wind when necessary. If speed is not your thing, Jeff has you covered with enough chrome and polished stainless steel to blind you when the hood is open. He even has a polished gas tank! If you ever see Jeff out and about in this coupe, make a point to go talk to him. He loves talking about his cars. He might even talk about his Thunderbird or one of his trikes. Jeff really is a nice guy and he also has cool toys, so he’s a winner in my book. KDW

It’s kinda funny how you run up on features sometimes. You spend countless hours searching parking lots, shows, cruise ins etc. for your feature. Normally, you find the owner, talk to them and get to know them. Then you pop the question...”Would you like to have your car/ truck featured in a magazine?” Usually what follows is excitement and a “YES!!” Other times, you find your feature, but the owner is nowhere to be found. Such is the case with Jonathan Taylor. I first spotted Jonathan’s Chevy at a car show in Kershaw, SC. From the hot rod flat black paint with old school blue & green pinstriping to the body planted firmly against the pavement, I knew I had to shoot this truck. I searched the show for the truck’s lost owner. No luck, and the time had come for me to head home. I guess it was about 3 or 4 months later when I was covering Southeast Showdown in Anderson, SC that our paths crossed again. As my luck goes, my camera died earlier that day and I had to spend the afternoon/night buying a new camera. Returning to the show the next day with a fresh camera and excited to meet the owner of this truck, my time had finally come! I walked over to the truck as soon as I entered the show gates. Of course, the truck was sitting there all alone... again. I never did meet up with him at the show. A few weeks after the show, I was at Fleaz Color Faktory in Rock Hill, SC getting some paint and stuff for my S-10. I had an idea to do some flat colors on my truck and was

describing the flat black dually to Ron, owner at Fleaz Color Faktory, and he says, “I know exactly what truck you are talking about!” Of course, I’m wondering how in the world this all comes together when Ron said, “I did the pinstriping on Jonathan’s truck.” Now I had the inside scoop of where to track down my feature. Come to find out, this truck lives just down the road from where I work. I had been chasing this truck around the state only to find out, it was right around the corner the whole time! Long story short (I guess I blew that already) I contacted Jonathan and we set up the shoot for Gauge Magazine. I shot the dually at an old business park in Rock Hill and got to know Jonathan as we talked about the truck and our similar interests. Everything about this truck is a solid example of how to build a truck the right way. From the old school white wall tires from Diamond Back Classic Radials to the phantom billet grille, this is ONE BAD TRUCK. Moving inside, the first thing you notice is this is not a normal Chevy interior. Well, not for a truck anyway. The interior goods were transplants from an Impala. Of course this was no easy task, but the guys over at Vintage Cars in Indian Land, SC did a superb job making it look like it belonged in there. All of the door panels, center console and speaker box were all hand made. An interior of this caliber would not be complete without a proper sound system, and this was taken care of by Audiomasters in

Pineville, NC. Memphis subs and amps are controlled by a Pioneer head unit to keep Jonathan grooving to his favorite tunes while he is cruising to all of his favorite shows where he meets up with his fellow members from Relaxed Atmoshphere. Jonathan fits the club perfectly with his “relaxed” attitude. He is truly one of the most laid back people I have met and I enjoy the time we have spent shooting his truck and going to a few shows together, which I am sure we will do more of this show season. As it turns out, I had to shoot the truck a second time a couple of months ago. This time would be for Street Trucks Magazine, which was my first opportunity to shoot for a print magazine. As you

read this, Jonathan’s truck has already been featured in the April issue of Street Trucks and as a thank you to Jonathan for letting me shoot his truck twice, braving the cold and helping me land one of my biggest goals, he has nabbed the cover of the very first print version of Rods & Subs Magzine! Thanks Jonathan and I will see you soon....now that I know where to find you! KDW
