Artemis - Roedean Performing Arts School

Page 1

The aim of Artemis Performing Arts School is to provide high quality training in acting, singing and dance for students of all ages, who either wish to spend more time enjoying their hobby or who are considering a career in the industry and would like to be pushed further, challenged more and get an idea of what will be required of them to gain a place at drama schools and dance colleges. We want the students to be really excited by performing arts and inspired to progress, develop and explore their potential. All classes will be taught by industry professionals, overseen by our Director of Drama, Susan Woodbridge, and students will also be visited regularly by West End performers and special guest tutors for workshops and feedback and Q&A sessions.

Who is the school for? The school is open to students from Year 9 upwards from Roedean, the Roedean Academy group of schools and our wider Roedean community. We are keen that the programme be co-educational, as it is an essential element of performance to be comfortable working with people of all genders, ethnicities and walks of life. Whilst we want to encourage and challenge those students who might be considering a career in the performing arts industry and want to take the subject more seriously, we also want to teach students who just love performing as a hobby and creative outlet. Groups and classes will be streamed to reflect the aims and needs of the participants, ensuring that all students get maximum fulfillment from the training.

Lessons will allow students to explore their own creativity, as well as work on specific acting techniques. Work will include monologue techniques, duologue work, group script, improvisation, introductions to different practitioners and the techniques required to perform their work. The students will study a variety of topics including classical acting, contemporary scripts, direction, improvisation, physical theatre and musical theatre.

The aim of vocal training is for students to develop their vocal technique and to work on a range of styles. They will learn to adapt their technique to many different styles, e.g. pop, musical theatre, classical, rock and they will learn to work in close harmony as well as having the opportunity to work as soloists.

Lessons will comprise of a balance of developing technique and learning routines. Lessons will always commence with a warm up to ensure the prevention of injury, followed by corner work to include turning, kicks and leaps. Routines will be learnt over a few weeks at a time and these will demonstrate different styles to include lyrical, contemporary, street, musical theatre, jazz, commercial and more.

Terms will be divided into technical skills terms, demonstration terms and performance terms. A technical skills term will focus on building the technique of the students in all disciplines within class. A demonstration term will culminate in an informal demonstration to parents, carers and friends in the normal class space at the end of term, showcasing a selection of the work studied over the term. A performance term will result in a polished, fully rehearsed performance with all three disciplines knitting together – this could be an abridged version of a musical or a play, with all age groups participating or each age group having their own excerpt from a musical or play. Performances would be costumed and staged in our wonderful in-house theatre, supported by our sound and lighting technicians. Group examinations for both PPA and LAMDA will also be available.
