House 2 Staff Team

Mrs Olivia Waller Housemistress

Miss Judith Roe Deputy Housemistress

Mrs Andrea Burns House Assistant

Miss Sarah Bennett House Assistant

Miss Frank-Keyes House Assistant

There is usually at least one member of staff on duty and they can be found in the House Study, ODR or other communal areas around the boarding house. The House Study is open most of the day, from breakfast until lights out. When the Study is closed, there is a sign on the door that tells you where you can find the member of staff on duty. If a member of staff on duty is in their flat, please don’t be afraid to knock on their door or ring the doorbell, even if it is in the middle of the night – the staff are always very happy to help you.

House 2 Staff Flats

Mrs Waller lives between the Ground and Lower Floors. She lives with Mr Waller, their daughters Florence and Ottiline, and Bean the dog. There is one door to her flat on the main staircase and another by Lower Colony.

Miss Roe lives in the flat on Middle Floor

Miss Frank-Keyes lives in the flat on Lower Floor

Housemistress:

Mrs Waller has lived and worked in boarding schools in Italy, Oxford and London before coming to Roedean in 2014. She has a degree in Theology and Italian and teaches Religious Studies and Classics. She is also our Housemistress and the Senior Boarding Mistress. She lives in House 2 with her husband, Mr Waller (also a teacher!) and two daughters, Florence (aged 7) and Ottiline (aged 4). Bean the cockapoo is also a valued member of the family and Mrs Waller enjoys taking Bean for walks along the beach. Mrs Waller enjoys travel, food and time with friends and family. Her favourite place to be is in the mountains, particularly if she is skiing.

Deputy Housemistress:

Miss Roe is coming into her third year living and working at Roedean. Prior to working in schools, Miss Roe was training as a midwife in Cambridge and has delivered a total of 32 babies. She has many dramatic stories from her years of training, but they are not for the faint hearted! Miss Roe loves the charm of living by the seaside and Brighton’s alluring atmosphere. In her time off you might find her browsing the local shops, coffee shops and restaurants that Brighton has to offer. Miss Roe is a keen baker and is always looking for feedback on recipes and baked goods! She loves getting creative and crafty and can’t wait to get to know the new girls starting this academic year at Roedean.

House Assistant:

Miss Bennet has spent most of her life working in local nurseries, schools and nannying for families in and around Brighton, making wonderful connections with the local parents and children. She thoroughly enjoyed this field of work but wanted to try something new that would fit nicely around university, where she is studying Psychology and Criminology. She spent her first year in Keswick House and has been in House 2 for the past year. She has thoroughly enjoyed having such a diverse, fun and rewarding role working in the boarding houses. She is now moving into her third year at Roedean, and is looking forward to the year ahead, welcoming new girls into House 2, watching her two Central Asian puppies grow up, her 15 year old son complete his last year at high school and finish her university degree.

House Assistant:

Miss Frank-Keyes is starting her second year living and working at Roedean School. During the day you will find her in the Health Centre keeping everyone fit and healthy. She moved to Brighton 5 years ago to attend university and fell in love with life by the sea. Miss Frank-Keyes has a degree in Musical Theatre and is always prepared for karaoke, or a dance-off! Her great music taste is loved around the house, and she is often found with the House 2 speaker during activities playing anything from Harry Styles to Stevie Nicks, RAYE and more... In her free time, you will find Miss Frank-Keyes at the beach or on a long walk through the gorgeous countryside surrounding Roedean.

House Assistant:

Mrs Burns has worked at Roedean for over 30 years. She can usually be found baking something delicious for the girls in the ODR. Mrs Burns is very creative and often encourages the girls in their crafting activities. When she is not at work, she can be found walking her dog Rupert around her local park.

Communication

Communication between the House, School and your parents/guardians is vital for you to flourish at Roedean. We will endeavour to keep parents/guardians fully apprised of the progress that you are making. We also hope that parents/ guardians will keep us informed of any changes in family circumstances or any issues we should know about in order to enhance the pastoral care and support that we can offer.

• The Housemistress (HM) and Head of Year (HOY) are likely to be the first point of contact for any significant pastoral or major academic issues. This will include requests for any type of absence.

• For more minor pastoral or academic issues, contact should be made with the tutor, including the HM and HOY if email is used.

• All other boarding-related pastoral issues and administration (lost kit, medical, appointments, taxis, etc.) should be directed to the House Staff at House2@roedean.co.uk.

Mobile Phones

All mobile phones and technical devices should be registered with the House Staff upon arrival. Please remember not to call the girls after the time they are supposed to hand in their mobile phone. Students in Years 7 to 10 do not have any mobile devices in their rooms overnight. For all students, mobiles will only be accessible during certain hours of the day. They need to be switched off and handed in to the House Study before school, and they can be switched back on at the end of the school day.

Laptops and Computers

All students are encouraged to bring their own laptops, which will then be networked, providing access to the Internet. You will receive your own email address within the first few days of term. This is useful as a means of contact between yourself and your parents / guardians. Further information about IT matters will be sent out from the School IT department.

The

FOLLOW US!

House activities are regularly updated here and everyone in the House community is encouraged to follow one or other of these feeds, which are as ‘live’ as we can make them. Please pass these links onto parents/guardians, grandparents, relatives and friends so that they can stay informed too. Privacy settings are strictly controlled. Please follow us here: https://x.com/RoedeanHouses.

House Team Competitions

Whether you are a day student or a weekly, flexi or full boarder, you will be fully integrated into your House Team. For boarders, the House is their Home and for day students, they can have access to various communal areas of the boarding house to socialise at the end of the school day. All boarders and day students will have many opportunities to represent their House Team throughout the year! Go House 2! House and Team spirit is strong at Roedean. This friendly rivalry produces a sense of camaraderie and community which inspires you to learn, grow and achieve together.

On Fridays during Activity 1 there will be House Team events. Get ready to cheer for your House Team, support your House and peers whilst having fun!

House Captain

Boarders in Year 11 can apply to become a House Captain or a Deputy House Captain. House Captains and Deputy House Captains offer significant leadership for their House and for the entire Roedean Community. Boarders who are Captain of a House or a Team should act as a role model and demonstrates Roedean’s ethos and values to students in Years 7-13 across the school. They assist in supporting the school with House events and House activities within Roedean and wider local community. They can support in Assemblies as well.

House A-Z

Accommodation

In Year 7 and 8, twin and triple rooms change every term to ensure that there is a different mix of people sharing rooms. Some Year 9 girls share in a double, but most have their own room. This will rotate each term. All Year 10 and 11 girls have their own room. All furniture is provided, but you need to bring a duvet, a duvet cover, and a pillowcase.

Academic Tutors in House

Academic support is available across several subjects. Speak to your boarding team to know who is on duty and get expert advice in the evening.

Bathrooms

Please make sure that you are using the appropriate bathroom facilities. It is usually on the same floor as your bedroom, if in doubt just check with your House staff. Sanitary items should be disposed of in the bins in each toilet cubicle.

Breakfast

Breakfast will be in the dining rooms each day, apart from a Saturday when we have breakfast in our House ODR.

Buddies

Each new girl is given a buddy to help them settle in, find where classrooms are, and make them feel welcome at Roedean and in their Boarding House.

Charity

We have a variety of fundraising events throughout the year to raise money to support a chosen charity. Please come and share any ideas with us if you would like to fundraise and we will be able to help you.

Cleaning the School

Frequent, thorough cleaning regimes are in place to ensure all rooms, touchpoints, and equipment are disinfected. Bathrooms and toilets will be checked frequently throughout the day and restocked with soap and hand sanitizer.

Clothes, Accessories and Make Up

You must wear your uniform through the school day and have your hair tied back. When school has finished you can change and put on your home clothes to be more comfortable in the house. You may wear a pair of stud earrings and/or a necklace supporting your religious beliefs. Make-up and nail varnish is a Sixth Form privilege.

Common Rooms

There are 3 common rooms with TVs and DVD players. These are the ODR, the Hobbies Room, and the GDR. You also have ‘snug areas’ on the Lower and Middle floors, where you can relax and make drinks. There is a pantry next to the ODR where you can make drinks and snacks. All food must be eaten in the common rooms – please no hot or messy food in your bedroom! Make sure that you clean up after yourself and leave the pantry and equipment as you would like to find it.

Courtesy

Highest standards of mutual respect and courtesy are expected from all girls, at all times, towards all members of Roedean community. It is important to knock on a door before speaking to someone else who is resting or working in their room. You are not to enter someone else’s room if they are not there either.

Decoration

Girls may only put up pictures, posters etc, on the pin board provided using drawing pins, or on the woodwork or gloss paint using blu-tack. Sellotape and blu-tack must not be used on the walls or ceiling. Pins must not be stuck into wood or wall. If in doubt about what is allowed, please ask your boarding staff.

Electrical Rules

The school’s electrical rules must be observed by everyone. All electrical equipment must be checked by the school electrician before being used. This is called PAT testing and it will happen in the first term of the school year, and throughout the year.

• Replacement light bulbs can be obtained from the House Staff.

• Lights, computers and music systems must be turned off whenever a room is unoccupied.

• Respect for environmental issues is very important, so House staff will have the right to turn off such equipment if no one is in the room.

• Material must not be draped over any lighting or electrical point, nor should items be charged on top of duvets as this is a fire risk.

• Dangerously wired or illegal equipment will be confiscated.

• TV sets, kettles, rice cookers, fridges, plugged in air-fresheners, toasters, etc, are not allowed for safety reasons. The ODR and Pantry are well stocked with equipment for you to use.

Fire Alarm

All boarders are expected to know what to do in the event of a fire, and must be familiar with agreed and published escape routes. The House is divided into fire ‘lines’ which will consist of people in your year group. If the fire alarm goes off in boarding time, you must go immediately to our meeting point and line up in silence in your fire line. It is essential for everyone’s safety that this evacuation takes place in silence. We will practice this so that you know which line you should be in.

Food

You are allowed to bring snacks into the House (sweets, chocolate, crisps, dried foods etc.). There are fridges, a freezer and many cupboards in which you can store your food. You can only use the fridge that is on your room floor. Please label all food with your name

Online supermarket deliveries are not allowed, but you can buy groceries at Asda on a Friday evening. You are welcome to cook in the Pantry or ODR with another member of staff around. Horizons Café also sells snacks. Please do not bring in snacks that contain nuts as some students have allergies. We are a nut-free school. No Nutella, sorry!

Guardians and International Students

Roedean welcomes students from all over the world, and our international students are part of a community of people who care for each other and grow as individuals, celebrating diversity and forging strong friendships. Our pastoral system means that all international students are actively supported by a team of staff as they integrate into school life.

To support this further, it is necessary that students have an additional adult, based in the UK, who can provide them with practical and emotional support while they are studying here. The strong pastoral care that Roedean delivers is enhanced by an active partnership between school, parents, and educational guardians. Through this, we can have clear channels of communication, discuss concerns if they arise, and share successes of the girls.

As a school, we require parents who live outside the UK or who are away from home frequently or for long periods of time, to appoint an educational guardian who lives in the UK as a permanent resident. This forms part of the parent contract.

Requirements

All educational guardians are required to live within a 2-hour drive of Roedean School. If the educational guardian’s

address is outside the South East of England it must be approved by school.

Educational guardians are also required to provide safe and suitable accommodation, that includes a bedroom, as well as supervision during periods when the student cannot be accommodated at school. These include:

• Days before and after term if the student’s flight to/from the UK does not coincide with our term dates and times.

• The student is required to undertake a period of quarantine in the UK

• If the student is unwell or injured and needs to recuperate away from school or is required to attend medical appointments.

• If school requires a student to leave for safeguarding or disciplinary reasons because we determine it to be in the student’s best interest

Educational guardians of students in Year 7 and 8 must escort the student to and from school, including journeys to and from UK airports. Students in Years 9 to 13 may travel unaccompanied with permission from their parents. Educational guardians are also responsible for making arrangements if the student’s flight is delayed or cancelled, and for coordinating

travel documents, passports and visas that may be required.

If the educational guardian is unable to host a student, parents are required to provide full details of the alternative accommodation the student will be staying at. If the educational guardian’s address changes, please also provide the school with this up-to-date information at the earliest instance.

To further enhance the active partnership between school, parents, and educational guardians, they are actively encouraged to attend a variety of school functions, including Parents’& Guardians’ Evenings to discuss and celebrate academic progress, as well as sports fixtures, concerts, and other important events in which the student is participating. This also includes welcome drinks at the start of each academic year, and social events each term.

Guidance for Boarders

If you have any questions, please ask House Staff. Posters with this information are displayed on noticeboards around the House.

Gym

There is a well-equipped gym for you to use in the evenings; timings will be on posters around the House. If you have any questions, please speak to the boarding Staff or the PE department.

House Meetings

These occur every Sunday at 20:00 in the ODR. The meetings are an opportunity for house staff to communicate important information and celebrate the individual and group successes of the House.

Illness

If you are ill at any time during the day or night, you must inform a member of staff as soon as possible. You must never put yourself to bed without letting the House Staff know that you feel unwell. The study has a medical cupboard where House Staff keep simple medical remedies like Paracetamol and cough syrup if this is what you need.

If you are very unwell, you can stay in your room and call the House phone. The Health Centre will be informed, and you will be able to see the School nurse or doctor. The House Staff should be notified of any medication brought from home and this should be stored in the medical cupboard. Foreign medicine is not accepted, as we need to be able to read the instructions and it needs to be approved by the GP at Roedean.

The Health Centre is open from 07:30 to 19:30 during the week. At weekends the Health Centre is open 08:00 - 14:00. When the Health Centre is closed your House Staff will help you! Just ask!

Internet Access

You will need to take your laptop or iPad to the IT Department when you arrive to enable internet access. You can access the internet using a wireless connection. The IT staff are very friendly. You will be given a guide to help you through the vital information that you need to know.

Joining in!

There is plenty we can do together! Come down to the ODR, get involved in year group activities and House socials! Get to know the House and its members! Lead by example! Do tell us what you would like to do too and lead on activities! It is always so much more meaningful when it is student led.

Key

Everyone joining Roedean has a key to their desk drawer. You can store your valuables there and keep the key with you. Please do not lose it! If you do, let us know and we will replace it, but the cost is £5.

Kitchen

On a day-to-day basis, girls are expected to eat meals in the School Dining Hall; however, girls may wish to eat extra snacks at other times. The House is supplied with bread and milk every day. Girls may cook only under the supervision of a member of staff, and only if they have been given specific permission to use ovens by the staff on duty.

Laundry and Dry Cleaning

You will be given a specific laundry day (between Monday to Thursday) which will be displayed on the notice board. You must bring your washing to the laundry before 8:20 on this day every week.

All bedding is washed on a Friday. Please bring your sheets to the laundry before 8.20 on a Friday. You can collect fresh bedding from the cupboard in the Hobbies Room – it is clearly labelled. If you are using your own bedding, then this will be folded and ready for you to collect after school.

Lights Out

You should try to be ready for bed 15 minutes before your lights out time. Lights out times are:

in Winter in Summer

Year 7 21:15 21:00

Year 8 21:15 21:30

Year 9 21:30 21:45

Year 10 22:00 22:15

Year 11 22:15 and we trust you to be reasonable! Just a good night! Be responsible and good!

Weekends: Lights out is 30 minutes later.

Lockers

All boarders have access to a lockable space in their room.

Notice Boards

We have noticeboards in the hallway and foyer on which the day-to-day information is displayed. You are welcome to take a photo of this, so you know what the timings are for the day when you are not in the ODR. There are also notice boards along the study passage, as well as in the Study, the Lobby and on the notice board on your floor. All information regarding the Health Centre, school councillors, sport, drama, and music as well as House/Weekend activities will be displayed here. Please check them regularly. Please also check your emails; staff will be emailing you!

Phones

You should not use your mobile phone at mealtimes, in Main School classroom areas, or after lights out. You can use the Study phone for calls if you wish to contact friends and family. Staff will collect mobile phones in the evening for Years 7 to 10.

Prep

Prep is fundamentally important to students’ success at Roedean. Prep can be done at any time of day; however, there is one formal prep session:

• During the week: 19:00 - 20:00

• Saturday: 10:30 - 11:30

Years 7, 8, and 9 students complete their prep in the JPR supervised by a member of staff. Year 10 and 11 students study in their own bedroom or can use our communal areas, just let the member of staff on duty know. We rely on you to ensure you are working at the best of your ability and will support you to ensure this.

Registration

All house registrations are taken in the ODR, it is important you make yourself known to the boarding staff on duty. If you are at an activity, on a trip, or out in town you will have already signed out with the member of staff on duty. This will be marked on the register.

Rooms and Living Together

We encourage you to use the lovely communal areas in your house to catch up with your friends.

Shoes or slippers must be worn at all times in the house, but slippers, flip-flops or sliders are not allowed in the Main School dining rooms.

At the end of each term, you will usually change rooms. This gives you the chance to be a roommate or neighbour with different people over the course of the year. It is also a wonderful way to get to know the whole House. You are responsible for keeping your room tidy and room checks are made each day to ensure this. Your bed should be made and your floor clear. Curtains are to be opened every morning and lights turned off. Desks should be completely cleared of belongings once a week so that our Domestic staff can clean this area for you.

Support

You have plenty of people you can speak to, and it is very normal not to feel 100% all the time. The school can help you whatever the problem is, we are here for you. If you have any problems or concerns, come and speak to a member of boarding staff (or email if face to face is difficult). We will always try to find a way of advising you or answering your questions without causing you any embarrassment. You can also speak to your Tutor, your Head of Year or the Pastoral Managers, whose office is in House 1. You can also speak to our school counsellors who you can email at counsellor@roedean.co.uk.

Alternatively, there are several Sixth form girls who have been trained in peer listening who will always be happy to talk to you about any problems you might have. Above all, if you have a problem, please tell someone – a friend, a teacher or one of our staff and they will try to help you in any way they can.

Security

When you open any coded door, you must ALWAYS ensure that it closes securely behind you. It is vital that we are always security-aware. Please do not open the front door of the House to someone you do not know. Always find a member of staff if you are unsure. You will be told what the current security code is, and we will let you know if it changes. Do not share these codes with anyone outside of students or staff at Roedean.

Signing in and out

Any girl leaving Roedean during the day or missing registration for whatever reason must sign out and back in on the relevant sheet in the Signing Out book. The member of staff on duty will check this regularly. Everyone must be back in the House by 8pm unless they have permission to be out later. Visiting girls from other houses must also be signed in – please inform a member of House Staff on duty.

Storage and Suitcases

You should be aware that during term-time storage is limited to the space under your bed or above your wardrobe. We will store your empty suitcases in our basement during term time, and you will be able to collect them when travelling home.

For the holiday period, you will be asked to clear your room and store your belongings in three named 55L storage boxes (School Trunk crates), 1 duvet bag and 1 suitcase. On Sundays, we return to school via train; we meet at Victoria Train Station departures area at 16:30 and we board to leave by 16:55. The girls arrive back at school by 19:00; this allows time to have supper and unpack before our weekly House meeting at 20:00 with your Housemistress.

travel. The VE has been running for many years and has become increasingly popular with our London boarders. They are accompanied by at least two members of staff for both journeys.

The VE mobile contact number while travelling is 07917 868348.

The service prioritises Year 7, 8 and 9 students, but it is open to all.

The cost of the VE will be added to your school bill each term. If you would like to use the service, please have your parents/guardians contact your House and let them know. Further details will be provided.
