HEAD’S

WEEKLY REVIEW

Head’s Introduction It’s the end of term! Looking back at just the last two weeks, I can hardly believe how much has gone on, so what the girls and staff have done over this term is outstanding! Since the last Head’s Review, we had the hotly-contested House Christmas Spirit Competition, with singing, dancing, icing, decorating, and laughing - it was brilliant, and this Review contains the results! This was followed quickly by our annual charity Christmas Fair, and it was fantastic to see the brilliant range of stalls in the Studios for the Parents’ Guild, and in the girls’ yeargroup rooms. The total raised at this event is outstanding, and I want too thank everyone who was involved for their hard work, both on the day and in the build-up - well done! This week, we have already had a whole range of events, and I hope you enjoy the photos in this Review - we have had our own mock election, run by Mr Marchant and the A Level Politics students, the Sixth Form Snow Ball in Keswick, organised by Lara and Siko (our Events Prefects), along with Miss Carragher, two outstanding Carol Services, with three choirs and an array of musicians, and two Staff Pantos, written by Mr Burlinson, and directed by Eleanor (Yr13).

Christmas Fair Thank you and well done to everyone involved in the Harry-Potter-themed Christmas Fair. The girls really went to town with their stalls, and they had some brilliant ideas to engage with our visitors – the girls enjoyed themselves, the ‘Sponge the Teacher’ stall went down particularly well, but it is wonderful that they were also raising funds for Off the Fence, Safe in Sussex and Plan UK.

The current total raised is over £8000 Well done to the Parents’ Guild too whose stalls, including the Silent Auction and tombola, raised lots of money, and they also oversaw a wide range of external stall-holders in the Studios. They also got into the spirit of the theme, with some amazing costumes, including Rita Skeeter, Professor McGonagall, Sirius Black, Professor Snape, Bellatrix Lestrange and an elaborate Hagrid costume, complete with stilts! A big thank you in particular to Meriel Spicer, the Secretary of the Parents’ Guild, who masterminded the fair. Overall, it was a brilliant event – congratulations to everyone!

The staff at Roedean present:

Miss Hindle as Cinderella

mother Dr Hannan as the Fairy God

In honour of you lot, my wonderful cast, Here is a poem, since it’s been such a blast. Miss Hindle as Cinderella Cinderella all started as a simple suggestion, But then it just blossomed and I began to question, How far could I go with this bonkers idea? Maybe a celebration at the end of the year? Overwhelmed by your enthusiasm, we decided to write, The whole bloody show, yes it took more than one night. Although it took more than I originally planned, It started coming together with a helping hand. With Burlo writing and Lottie by my side, The cast list was published, now nowhere to hide. With all of us busy, rehearsals were tough Particularly in winter with us all feeling rough. But aren’t you glad we all pulled through And we couldn’t have done it without the help of the trusty theatre crew. And now here we are - first staff panto completed, Although with your lines, I know some of you cheated. But don’t you worry, your secret’s safe with me, That’s until the video is released for everyone to see. From the moment when Buttons was revealed through the curtain, I and everybody knew one thing for certain. As a group, your talent has been completely underestimated, But now all is made clear and your very much appreciated by your colleagues, by your students across the whole school, All the rehearsal paid off and you didn’t look like fools. The girls in the crowd leapt up with joy To celebrate you, the ones Roedean employs. So thanks once again, I will always remember That time you all ‘panto-d’ for me in December. Eleanor (Yr13)

Samba Workshop for Year 7 This week, all Year 7 pupils took part in an exciting day of rhythmic music and movement, a samba workshop, making the most enormous amount of sound in the Theatre. The stage was filled with a vast array of samba instruments, including surdos, tamborims, ganzas, and agogo bells. This year, we also welcomed a group of Year 6 pupils from St Mark’s school to join in the fun of creating the samba sound. Everyone entered into the spirit of this very active rhythmic team work with great energy and enthusiasm. The day concluded with a very lively performance from everyone in Year 7, playing different devised pieces in samba style. The whole year group began the performance with a very well-coordinated piece involving just body percussion sounds and rhythmic chanting. Our very appreciative audience also had the chance to join in with some call and response exchanges with the workshop leader. It was a fantastic way to round off the term for Year 7 and the day was enjoyed by all.

Willow: ‘I particularly enjoyed working together as a group and listening to how all the different instruments sounded together.’ Liepa: ‘My favourite instrument was the Surdo because it was loud and made a very dramatic noise. I loved the hip-hop section, as we had words to remember the rhythm.’ Maisie: ‘The Samba workshop was something extremely new and I enjoyed it very much. Mr Turner even let me conduct.’ Anon: ‘I enjoyed playing all the different instruments and stepping into the life and culture of Brazilian music. I also liked Mr Turner’s vibes and how fun and enthusiastic he was.’

Netball Staff attend National Coaches' Conference

Roedean girls play on Olympic pitch Evie, Atlanta and Orla have been lucky enough to play on the pitches where the Hockey for the 1992 Barcelona Olympics was held. The competition had over 1100 young players from teams like Lazio, Madrid, Belgium and the UK. The girls all played their hearts out in the U13 3rd place play offs, but unfortunately lost 2-0. However, we are so proud of how amazing they did and giving them the opportunity to experience this has given them even more reason to do well in their sport. Mrs Jenner

On Monday the Roedean netball staff ventured to Surrey to attend a National Coaches' Conference run by ex-England coach Tracey Neville and current England players Natalie Haythornthwaite and Eboni Usoro-Brown. The coaches have come away with lots of new ideas and inspiration to bring to the Roedean courts ahead of the netball term starting in January.

U14B Hockey vs Lancing The U14B had their last match of the season vs Lancing College. The first half it was a close game with both teams pressing well and utilising their defence. However, Roedean started to demonstrate some brilliant tackles throughout and sent the ball up to Dani who was our high forward. We initially struggled to finish the ball off, but after numerous chances we managed to score our first goal of the match. After a halftime team talk of making sure the girls held their positions and kept calm, looking for the pass, the

second half was strong and Roedean held their formation and our defence cleared the ball well. A second goal was then scored successfully as our girls were carrying the ball up the pitch superbly.

A huge well done to all that played and you should all be extremely proud of yourselves. A fantastic end to the season well done! Final score Roedean 2, Lancing 0.

Senior Maths Challenge Well done to all our mathematicians in Years 12 and 13 who took part in the Senior Maths Challenge in November, achieving a total of 7 Gold, 14 Silver, and 22 Bronze certificates. This national competition poses 25 tough questions designed to test the problem-solving skills of participants. Congratulations in particular to our Gold certificate winners, who also qualified for the follow-on round, the European Senior Kangaroo:

House 3 festivities To finalise our festivities in House 3 this term, we held a house party which was a great opportunity for the girls to celebrate the term, play party games together and enjoy numerous festive food. Pass the parcel was an obvious favourite for the games, will all girls getting excited about receiving the prizes. We wanted to celebrate the girls’ achievements in house during the term and gave out awards to each year group for the tidiest room. We also highlighted girls for special contributions to the house. The Kindness Award was given to Sara for her genuine kindness to all; the House Spirit Award was awarded to Anastasia for consistently getting herself involved in house activities, and the All-Rounder Award went to Julie, who is always enthusiastic about house life and led our House Drama. House 3 were keen to support the school charities this term at the Christmas Fair. Our stand was full of homemade delights and Christmas decorations, organised by Mrs Allen. We were thrilled to sell many of the goods, raising a total of £88.10 for the school charities; it was a lovely end to the term!

Unsung Heroes

Tricks of the Mind – from a Year 7’s Perspective Academic week was a treat for all of us at Roedean, not just because we got no prep for that week (!), but also because we learned and experienced lots of new things we had never done before. Also we got to learn and think about the brand new and fascinating information in the lectures. My first lecture was about Tricks of the Mind, and for a starter we were given a sheet where we were meant to guess the population of the country with an example of the population of the country at the top. Half of the people got a sheet with a large population and the rest got a sheet with a small population. As a result, half of the people over-guessed and the rest under-guessed. After that we looked at some still images that appeared to be moving. We also looked at why we see microexpressions and faces everywhere. We then looked at an amazing and funny TED talk at https://www.ted. com/talks/michael_shermer_why_people_believe_ weird_things?language=en

For my second lecture, I listened to a speaker from Sussex University who talked about her work in Madagascar, which contains over half of the world’s species. She and her team have continuously visited Madagascar to help the population there survive and not die out from the pollution because their voices haven’t been heard. I learned a lot in Academic Week, but a fun fact was that I learned that if everybody took a shower just a minute shorter, then we could be saving the world! I would personally like to have more lectures at Roedean because it felt special to have a different timetable and space in the day to explore new ideas. I am looking forward to seeing which Roedean Academic Lectures are on offer next term! Maria (Yr7) Ellie, Lottie, Sofia and Jane (Yr13) for working hard on the Panto [PHA]
