HEAD’S

WEEKLY REVIEW

Head’s Introduction At the end of the second full week of term, I am delighted that all the girls, and indeed all the staff, are settling in to the new school routines. The new start to the day with reading time and talk time is working well, and it is a pleasure to see girls and staff across the school simply reading for pleasure. I have started my weekly teas with girls, and it’s good to see that Year 7 are adapting so well to the school, although ‘getting lost’ still ranks highly on the list of new experiences. Well done to all of you!

The diverse range of things going on in one week at Roedean is impressive, and this week it has included lots of sporting fixtures, two lovely Chapel services in which girls and staff shared extracts from their favourite books, power boating in the marina at the weekend, auditions for this term’s production of ‘Oliver’ and the Year 8 production of ‘Twelfth Night’, nearly 40 visitors coming to Roedean as part of the national Heritage Open Day programme, university Personal Statement writing for Year 13, a trip to London for our Head of School and Deputy Heads of School to meet and

make contacts with their counterparts at other schools at the Tatler School Awards in London, and a surprise visit to Main School from a wandering bat, who was also finding the geography of Roedean a problem. Well done, and congratulations to all for getting involved in some many different things! Good luck to 100 or so Year 10 girls and the 11 members of staff who are going on the Blacklands Farm residential this weekend, and I wish you all well for the coming week!

A Sheepish Manicure! This week, the farm prefects have been busy clipping the hooves of the sheep, in preparation for the wet wintery months ahead. As ever, the girls have thrown themselves into this task, and they just love it. We are delighted that the school allotment is also being productive, and you can see Rosie J (Yr11) with her potatoes and lavender cuttings!

Chemistry Golds for Roedean In the 2017 University of Cambridge Chemistry Challenge for Year12, Roedean girls performed very well indeed. Congratulations to Selen S, Emily T, Mavis Z, and Yian Z, who were awarded Gold, and also to Annabelle K and Martha N, who achieved Copper Awards. These are the best results achieved by Roedean chemists in the seven years that the competition has been running, so they have performed remarkably. The questions this year were about the analysis of the pink tap water in Onoway, Canada, and the preparation of the drugs carpipramine and ethoheptazine from bromoalkanes. Well done, girls!

HEAD’S WEEKLY REVIEW Unsung heroes in the spotlight Each week, many wonderful things happen at Roedean, about which many in the school are perhaps unaware; this section of the weekly review is dedicated to ‘unsung heroes’, in order to draw our attention to these people and remind us that our community is special.

Year 12

Berenice I and Amelia M (Yr7) for their kindness and positive attitude in helping others settle in [JC]

Wednesday’s Fixtures 80% of Year 7 played in a competitive fixture this week, which is fantastic!

U12A / B at the Lingfield Tournament

Jackie S and Lesley M for conducting the Heritage Tours of Roedean last week; they were super, very knowledgeable, and our visitors had a very enjoyable tour [RB]

Venus G (Yr10) for exploiting independent resources to create extension materials in Spanish [AK]

The U12As played in their first tournament at Lingfield on Wednesday. We had a tough first game against RGS who scored two goals almost immediately into the game. We did regain our composure but didn’t have enough time. Our next game was definitely our best as we worked well together and scored two fantastic goals using the cross from wide onto the back post. Again our defence were caught off guard and we lost our lead to lose the game 3-2. The last game in the pool was against St John’s and we lost 1-0 in driving rain. We picked up the tempo against Hawthorns and won 3-1 and then in our final game we faced Lingfield again losing 1-0. It was a super tournament with promising play from all involved. The Players of Match were Amelia K, Erin S and Issy B.

U13A

The U13A hockey team had their first hockey match this season against Seaford Prep. After a slow start, Roedean let Seaford Prep score 2 early goals. In the second half, Roedean were much better defensively and began to show promise in attack. The final score was 3-0 to Seaford Prep.

U12C

U12C team lost 1-7 at home to Seaford Prep. It was a well-fought battle with Bella D scoring the only Roedean goal. Lucy N was voted Player of the Match by Seaford.

U12 D / E

Emily F (Yr12) for helping another girl in her French class to settle, despite being new herself [CCM]

These two teams were nervous as this was the first time they had played, but they went out with confidence and tried their hardest in the first half to gain possession and stop Seaford from scoring. However, after the first half the score was 1-0. But the girls kept their heads up for the 2nd half, and our defence was strong, although Seaford were stronger, resulting in a 3-0 win. Well done to all girls who played; it was a very good effort! The Players of the Match were Sasha S and Rania K.

U12B

Annabelle K (Yr13) for work on preparing for European Day of Languages on 26/9 [JSM]

The U12B Hockey team played really well this week in their first tournament of the season. The team beat Mayfield 1-0; and we held Lingfield to a 0-0 draw. However, we unfortunately lost 1-0 to St John’s, who scored in the final minutes of the game. Special mention goes to Sasha H who scored the team’s first goal of the season, and to Tia E who was voted Player of the Match.

Georgia A (Yr12) for being receptive to new ideas, and responding well, leading to an excellent drawing [SSN]

Tia’s A* in Greek Congratulations to Tia L in Year 7 who achieved an A* at Greek GCSE last summer – what a brilliant achievement!

HEAD’S WEEKLY REVIEW

Hockey vs Christ’s Hospital U14A

The U14A team played their first game of the season against Christ’s Hospital. The game was very evenly matched, with CH scoring first, but Roedean kept their heads and kept battling strongly. There was some excellent play from our strong midfield, which saw Sophia C pass a lovely through ball to her sister, Serena, who made no mistake in slotting the ball past the keeper. It was 1-1. Again, Roedean showed that they are a force to be reckoned with, demonstrating excellent skill in the middle of the pitch. Ella K-M scored Roedean’s second goal that took us to the end of the first half. The second half was equally competitive, with Roedean showing excellent vision, and, using the width, they produced some excellent goal-scoring opportunities, but we just couldn’t put the ball in the net. CH maintained pressure on the Roedean defence and scored a late goal in the second half. It was a brilliant first game, with a very fair 2-2 end result. There is lots to work on as a team, but also lots and lots of positives to take forward. India H was Player of the Match.

U14B

The U14B girls got off to a fantastic start, with the defence working well together and stopping the opposition from scoring. Roedean were working effectively down the channels, enabling

us to gain possession and score the first goal! In the second half, the girls’ communication was fantastic, and although Christ’s Hospital were trying their hardest to score, Tatum W and the defence were just too strong. There were some great passes made between our forwards, and the second goal was scored by Phoebe H. It was a fantastic effort from all the players, and congratulations to Phoebe H who was awarded Player of the Match! Well done girls – it was a great result!

U15A

The 15As had a tough first fixture, which they unfortunately lost 3-0. The score didn’t truly reflect the game, as the play was end to end, with both teams having ample chances. Our defence remained solid until seconds before half time when we let in a sloppy goal. The second half was even better, and Demi and Hannah were unlucky not to score with a break away. It wasn’t until the last quarter that girls began to tire, and we just couldn’t hold out anymore, and Christ’s Hospital scored 2 goals in quick succession. The Player of the Match was Liv vB.

U15B

Torrential downpours did not dampen the spirits of the U15Bs, and there were some promising performances from every member of the

Powerboating at the marina At the weekend, 30 girls from all years, including 4 day girls who came into school to join their friends, went powerboating in the marina with Lagoon Watersports. While the others enjoyed hot chocolate in Café Rouge overlooking the water, the girls went on the boat in groups of 6. The weather was really gusty, so the girls and staff had to hang on for dear life, but they all had a brilliant time! Miss Boobis described it as ‘like a being on a rollercoaster and having a bucket of water thrown in your face’! We welcome contributions from all parts of the Roedean community. If you have something you would like featured in the Headmaster’s Weekly Review, please email: marketing@roedean.co.uk Page 4

squad. We saw great leadership from Atlanta S on the field and at half-time, and some excellent runs from Ella L and Tabitha M, who really attacked the opponent’s end. Serene SR made some crucial clearances alongside great hustle from Alice D. The final score was 2-0 to Christ’s Hospital, but there are a whole load of positives to take forward to the next game. The Player of the Match was awarded to Serene.

1st XI

After our first full week of training, Roedean arrived at a thundery Christ’s Hospital at the weekend. Going into this game, we were aware of their physicality and athleticism, but we had a game plan in mind. Roedean started the game poorly, allowing CH to overload the right hand side. With the score 4-0 to CH at half-time, Mr Burlinson and Mr Carter gave the squad a reality check. With a bit of tinkering, Roedean were a different side in the second half, creating more chances which led to a great team goal, finished by Jemima Goddard, her first goal for the 1st team this season. Overall, it was a frustrating performance, and we knew that we could have performed a lot better in the first half. The final score was 5-1.
