Head’s Introduction
In our Chapel services this week, Dr Hobbs spoke about the power of music, and how it can influence us in different ways. I am sure that the shared experience of making music as part of a group must be one of the most powerful, and it was lovely for the whole school community to hear one of the pieces from tonight’s The Natural World concert in our services. Over 100 musicians will be performing, in 8 different ensembles, playing music from Mendelssohn to David Bowie. I would like to congratulate the Music Department on such a diverse programme, and good luck to everyone who is performing this evening.
Roedean welcomed 80 pupils in Years 6 and 8 to Discovery Day, one of our biggest admissions days, this week. They took part in a range of activities led the Geography, History, and English departments, as well as visiting the Farm – thank you to all my colleagues who were involved, and in particular to the Admissions team.
Some of our Discovery Day visitors stayed at Roedean last night on a boarding taster, and this meant that they got to experience House Dance. Each House had just a few hours of rehearsal, the students choreographed the dances themselves, and at least 20 performers from each House had to take the stage. The result was brilliant, and the audience went wild, cheering and shaking their pom-poms, all dressed in their House colours. The overall winner was House 2, but congratulations to everyone involved – it was great fun!
You can see that this has been a busy week for the Performing Arts, but there was also a LAMDA Showcase at the start of the week. It was designed as a performance opportunity for fourteen students who have their exams next week, and they did really well. I would like to thank the Theatre team, who have been juggling these different events in different venues – well done!
Thank you to everyone who has worn something spotty today and donated to Children in Need – it is such a wonderful charity project, which does so much good for children and young people. While many of us will be at the concert tonight, four members of staff will be sleeping under the stars as part of Off the Fence’s Big Sleep Out, highlighting the experience of the many homeless people who live in Brighton. Good luck to Ms Sturgeon, Mr Halsey, and Mrs Crawley, who have already raised over £1,200 for our partner charity!

Congratulations to Kira (Yr12), who has placed fourth in Germany, in the National Mathematics Competition. This means that she is ranked as the top female student in her year-group in Germany, and fourth in the country!
The competition is made up of two rounds: in the first, students have to solve 4 challenging problems, in a three-month time-scale – only those who are able to complete at least 3 problems are admitted to the second round. Three students across Germany were awarded first prize, and Kira achieved second prize – to do this, she filled 80 pages of A4 with solutions!
In addition to a cash prize of €100, she has been invited to the selection round to represent Germany as one of six Mathematicians in the International Mathematics Olympiad, which this year will take place in Chiba, Japan.
Good luck, Kira!

Roedean's Partnership Projects
The Independent Schools Council is celebrating the #powerofpartnerships between independent and state schools in Partnerships Week 2022, and we are very proud of our partnerships with local schools in the state sector.
All Year 6 pupils come to Roedean every Thursday for academic and sporting enrichment. This week, our Year 9 students visited St Mark's Primary in Brighton as part of their weekly Language Buddies and Reading Buddies programme, as they do each week.
This partnership with St Mark’s Primary has been going strong for 6 years – by focusing a wide range of activities on one school, the Roedean community has been able to make a marked and tangible difference to the children’s lives and educational experience.
As well as making an impact, Roedean girls derive great pleasure from working with the St Mark’s pupils, as well as developing a range of skills, including leadership and communication. From September 2021 to the end of last academic year, Roedean students contributed 882 hours to the partnership with St Mark’s Primary School. In addition, Roedean staff contributed 205.5 hours over the course of the year, and St Mark’s pupils have benefited from 7,724 hours of teaching and support.
On Wednesday this week, 4 different CAP (Community Action Project) groups visited local partnership institutions, including 3 schools, Chailey Heritage, Downsview, and St Mark's again, either to support in classrooms or the students at St Mark's will be collaborating with the children on a garden project.
Well done to Sofiia (Yr7), who has won this week's Golden Ticket – congratulations!

PERFORMING ARTS
Chapel – Music
This week, Dr Hobbs led our Chapel services, which focused on Music, and included a preview of one of the pieces in tonight's Autumn Gala Concert.
'We have all, I am sure, listened to a piece of music and been moved to tears – sometimes of sadness, sometimes of joy. We must have all watched a film and experienced a moment when the music in the film has raised the tension and made us terrified, or eased the tension and made us laugh. Film producers spend millions on musical scores for films, because they know the power of music to manipulate our emotions.
Almost every social movement of liberation in modern history has been accompanied by music of protest and revolution, such is music’s power, not only to create emotion within us, but also to prompt us to action. Music makes us want to tap our feet, get up and dance, or even march to the barricades.
Music has strong ritual and religious value too. Like nothing else, it brings people together and enables individuals to lose themselves in group singing. That is why people sing in choirs, and at football matches. We share a sense of identity with others when we sing together.
'I would like to share with all of you today a piece of music that I really love, and I’m certain most, if not all, of you have heard of it, 'The Phantom of the Opera'. My family and I went to watch the Phantom of the Opera in London this half term and the music was absolutely fantastic. As there’s live orchestra playing, the music was everywhere in the theatre – it surrounds you 360°. It was so powerful and so beautiful that the audience was completely immersed in the musical.
One reason that the song ‘The Phantom Of The Opera’ is my all-time favourite is because the music itself includes a wide range of dynamics and a soft yet haunting tune which immerses you in the atmosphere as it creates a very dramatic aura. The story, emotions and messages of characters are also expressed through the song. The song requires a lot of skills and effort as well. Therefore it is incredibly impressive to see casts who are highly-skilled and professional. Music is art. There is no right or wrong in music. It goes in the ears, straight to the heart.'
Kate
LAMDA recital
Congratulations to all who performed in the LAMDA Recital on Monday! It was exciting to see the variety of drama pieces from Shakespeare to Phoebe WallerBridge, as well as some interesting poems and prose.
All the students performing will be taking their LAMDA exams next Friday, so we wish the best of luck to Molly, Izzy, Mia, Lucy, Lyla, Zoe, Molly, and Blaize (Yr8), to Jasmine and Sonia (Yr9), and Olivia and Rida (Yr10), and Mia and Amelia (Yr11).
Ms Clarke
Music can help us to concentrate, but also distract us. It helps evoke memories of things we have forgotten. It turns out that music can even help patients undergoing surgery to block out pain.
Over the past ten years, scientists have become more and more interested in the power of music, and one of the things they have discovered from brain imaging technology is that music listening, composition, and performance, occupy nearly every part of the brain and nearly every neural subsystem. Basically, every part of your brain is activated by music.'
'Music has always held a special place in my heart. I’ve been singing on stages now since the age of 4, and it has introduced me to so many different opportunities, such as singing solos in the Royal Albert Hall to performing Jane Seymour in our upcoming musical of SIX. Personally, I think that music is really important to our everyday lives, it can really transform how someone’s feeling, and it can certainly put a smile on all our faces, whether that be listening to Mozart or Beethoven, or even Tupac and Kanye West.
For me, music has definitely helped me a lot since it has given me a chance to do what I love most but has also got me into an incredible performing arts school for next year. So I say, thank you for the music!

The Year 10 charity this year is a wonderful local charity, Off the Fence. They do incredible and important work supporting the homeless community, women in difficulty and vulnerable school children in Brighton & Hove. They will be holding their annual ‘Big Sleep Out’ this evening, Friday 18 November, where participants experience what life can be like for rough sleepers and raise money and awareness for Off the Fence. Junior Classicists Mummify Carrots
This week in Junior Classics Society, we mimicked the Egyptian preservation process of mummification. We only used carrots, not people, with the aim of learning about ancient traditions and beliefs in life after death.
The first step was to design and draw a death mask for the carrots, so that they could look suitably grand as they enter the afterlife; then it was time to embalm the carrots. As we lacked the traditional 'natron' required, we used salt and bicarbonate of soda to dry out the carrots, before wrapping them tightly with oil-soaked cloth. Scented with fragrant spices, and preserved with resin, they are now drying out in their 'tomb' in the Classics office, before being given as truly unique Christmas gifts!

Discovery Day
80 girls visited Roedean yesterday for a ‘Revolution!’ themed Discovery Day – a whole day of exciting lesson activities that included map-reading across the school grounds for Geography, being inspired by Greta Thunberg in English, and in History, the girls ‘met’ different revolutionary figures from history to assess which they would give the prestigious ‘Roedean Revolutionary Reward’ to! The girls also enjoyed helping to feed the sheep and goats on the farm and took part in group discussions. 14 girls then stayed for a sleepover boarding experience in Houses 3 and 4, after soaking up all the House spirit by watching the amazing House Dance competition!
Enormous thanks to Ali Wienekus and the Admissions team for organising, the Geography, History and English departments for their inspiring lessons, to all staff who led group discussions, to Miss Banfield at the farm, to all staff involved in the sleepover for looking after the girls, and to our brilliant catering team – all of whom helped to make this another really special and memorable event for our visitors.

Remembrance Sunday – Trench Art Display in Lawrence
This year, Lawrence House has paid tribute to the many soldiers and prisoners of war, by gathering a collection of Trench Art for a display. For some, trench art was just a way to pass the time, but for others, it was a way in which soldiers could store memories in an object they could then come back to and think about at a later date, something tactile that could even be used to share a little of the experience they had with friends and family, using the object to help them to tell their story.
All the years later, our display has generated many conversations and discussions across the generations and with the many visitors we get to Lawrence House. Our dedicated domestic, Janice, talked poignantly about her own experience of war and how it impacted members of her family who were stationed and bombed in Malta during World War II. Thank you Janice for sharing your personal account of such a moving story.

Lucy in National Ice-Skating Competition
Well done to Lucy (Yr10) in House 1, who is passionate about synchronised ice-skating – this week, she took part in a national competition, and here are her reflections:
'On Monday and Tuesday of this week, I competed in the first competition of the 2022 – 2023 synchronised ice-skating season. The competition, Skate London, was held at Alexandra Palace Ice Rink. The days started out with an official practice in front of the judges. This gives us the chance of getting used to the ice, with the possibility of doing 2 full run throughs to music. The actual competition takes place in the afternoon, in front of a panel of judges and technical specialists. In between, we do a lot of training off ice and fitness. Both days finished off with presentations, where they award medals.
Every Sunday, I have to wake up at 5:30am to go to training, which includes on ice, off ice and fitness, but it was well worth it as both teams I compete in achieved personal bests as well as bronze medals in their respective categories.
Skating is a passion of mine, and I have been doing it since the age of 6. I had always competed in solo competitions, but at the age of 11, I tried out synchronised skating. We are a team of 16, which allows us to build solid friendships through the sport. Every season is usually composed of 3 competitions, which for us is one home competition, and 2 away competitions. I particularly love how the sport is so diverse and allows you to push yourself in skills, whilst still enjoying yourself and having your hard work pay off.
As this was a National competition, I was really proud to participate, and we are looking forward to the British Championships coming up in January!'

Hockey vs Cumnor House
U13C
The mighty U13Cs played Cumnor House School this Wednesday. Despite the weather, the girls were motivated and ready to play. Molly and Lois were transferring the ball and setting a high line, which allowed Roedean to win the ball back quickly. Siena, Maud, Amber, and Lula worked tirelessly in midfield and kept the play wide. Iris and Polly kept offering ball side height, and were fearless upfront when pressing. Roedean won 4-0, with Coaches Player awarded to Lois for her calmness on the ball.

U12B Good Form Continues
The U12B team continued their impressive unbeaten run this term, with a home match against Cumnor House. The game started well for both teams, with each attack producing shots at both goal keepers. Andrea was resolute in goal, making very good saves all game, concentrating on keeping the ball out of the net at all costs.
After some defensive pressure, Roedean managed to get into the D through some good passing, and Ezzie finished off a superb goal past the left foot of the keeper. After a quick halftime reflection on what we could improve, the team set their sights to put the game to bed and did so later in the second half with another well-constructed goal down the right. The game ended 2-0, and Yasmin impressed in her debut for the U12Bs.

Hockey vs Bede's
U16C
The U16 C hockey team played against Bedes on 14 November, and the final score was 1-7 to Bedes. Although the score did not reflect the team's ability, they played with confidence and determination. The team's captain was Pia, and the passing from her in defence brought the ball exceptionally far across the pitch, which made Flora, Biba, and Eva drive up the pitch and into the D, which is when Flora scored an expectational goal.
Ella saved many goals, and she also intercepted the ball very well. Poppy tackled Bede's forwards with confidence, and managed to get the ball out and into the third half. Heidi and Ella played out on the wings very well and maintained the ball. Hannah, Twinkie, and Abisha were always in space ready to receive the ball, as well as defending very well. Hannah drove up the pitch with the ball a number of times, and helped the forwards receive the ball and enter the D.
There were two Players of the Match this time, Poppy and Biba, and the coaches' chosen player was Pia. Overall, there are definitely a few techniques that they can work on during lessons, however they played exceptionally well, even though the final score was unfortunate.
Miss Wakeling
U15A Beat Bede's with a Last Gasp Goal
The U15A team took to the astro in a good clash against Bede's with the teams in similar positions in their seasons. The game started with a fiery intensity, with Bede's having a lot of possession and Roedean defending for their lives.
After remaining composed and building their way into the game, Roedean managed to spread the ball wide and get through the midfield more often, with Grace and Orla bringing the ball up the pitch with some impressive ball carries. Before half-time, Roedean managed to put Bede's under some pressure and scored a well-worked goal past the Bede's keeper.
The half-time talk was needed to re-organise what we were trying to do and how to keep the ball more. The second half saw Roedean building their attacks, with good passing movement, forwards making great leads, and a couple of opportunities to score. Bede's were still threatening on the counter, but the defence were resolute for most of the match. Bede's managed to level it with a scurry off Fen's first save, and the attackers reacting quicker to put the ball into the goal. For the remainder of the game, Roedean increased the intensity and were all over Bede's, looking for that last minute goal, and it came... a penalty corner was awarded with a minute to go. The first attempt went onto a defender's foot, and another penalty corner was awarded. The second attempt, the ball was slightly right of Grace at the top, she remained composed, smashed it to the left post where, after a big deflection, Erin managed to put it in off her hand that was on the stick and into the goal to take the win.
What an incredible ending to a toughly fought match. The final score was 2-1 to Roedean.

U12C vs Handcross 4th team
The U12Cs had a slow start against Handcross on Wednesday, which allowed them to score 2 goals within the first 5 minutes. Fortunately, we came into the game more, and started to pressure the ball and string some nice passes together. Handcross managed to get one more past us just before the half time whistle so it was 3-0 at half time.
We went back on with a determined attitude, the girls worked extremely hard making leads into space and sending the ball ahead of the players. In defence, we were using strong passes to clear the ball out wide and our mids were picking it up. We had a lot of possession, but they managed to keep us at bay. They caught us on the counter and the game finished 4-0 to Handcross.
It was a great effort – well done. A special mention goes to Florence, who was named Opposition's Player for her attacking movement in front of goal, and to Erin, who got Coaches' Player for working tirelessly on and off the ball to put her team in the best position throughout the game.
Keep up the hard work girls!

Hockey vs Handcross
U13E
The U13E team played their final game of the season against Handcross Park, and the progress they have made throughout the season was clear to see.
Each player had a great impact on the game. Although Handcross had a strong start, Stella and Blaize made some brilliant under-pressure tackles to help Khadija keep the goal clear in the first half. Lola picked up the one Roedean goal of the game in the first half, after some good transition play from defence to attack by Claudia and Matilda. Unfortunately, a quick break after half time saw the opposition equalise, but the girls fought hard and had lots more chances at goal; they were unlucky not to score again, leaving the game at a 1-1 draw. Congratulations go to Opposition's Player, Claudia, and Coaches' Player, Almen, who showed some great individual hockey skills.
Miss Kirby-Jones
U12D
The U12Ds played their first ever indoor hockey match this week versus Handcross Park. Last time we played them, we drew 3-3, so it was all to play for. The starting whistle went and we were quite slow to respond. We needed to settle into the game more quickly, as the ball travels a lot faster across the ground.
In indoor hockey, you can play the ball off of the walls, and it took us a while to get to grips with this. The score was 2-0 down at half-time and, after a quick team talk, the girls were ready to go again. Georgie and Chiara managed to bag a goal in the second half, but Handcross pipped us with another one, leaving the final score a 3-2 loss and a really good experience for the team.
Well done to Chiara for being awarded Girl of the Game, and to Izzy for being named Coaches' Player of the match. We have one more match left of the hockey season to go!

Hockey vs Mayfield
U15A's Strength and Depth Too Good for Mayfield
Another Saturday fixture, and the U15A team were up against Mayfield at home. With a few players playing up in the U16s, and some players getting their first opportunity in the As, it was going to be imperative to start the game well and work together to achieve the objectives set.
The game did start well, with Roedean maintaining good possession, and the midfield delivering good opportunistic balls to the forwards to finish off. Roedean went 1-0 up early, and looked to secure the game with a second goal before half-time. After the break, we looked to increase the intensity and to get further ahead in the game. Mayfield struck with a counter attack, which put us under some pressure and made the last 10 minutes interesting.
The girls handled the pressure well and secured the win with a 3rd goal, to take it out of reach of Mayfield – the match ended 3-1 to Roedean.
Mr Campleman
U14B Continue their Winning Streak
The U14B continued their brilliant progress this season with another win, this time against Mayfield. After a strong start from the opposition, with lots of possession, the Roedean girls jumped into action with a quick opening goal from Alice.
The linking play from the midfielders was again wonderful, with Bea, Chloe, Asmitha, and Charlie all playing key roles in delivering the ball to the forwards. Four more goals were scored before the half time whistle went –Romey scored a hat trick, Alice another, and Tiah too.
After a great team talk from the girls and some repositioning, the team went back out hungry for more. Bea took charge of the goal scoring, with two in the second half, and congratulations must go to the defence of Maggie, Iris, Izzy, and Farwa, who continue to prevent the oppositions from scoring, and Emila for being unstoppable in goal.
Miss Kirby-Jones
U16B vs Mayfield 2nd Team
The U16Bs put on a brilliant performance last weekend against Mayfield. We pressured the ball well and made countless turnovers, allowing us to drive the ball forwards at pace. We also communicated effectively in defence, which limited the attacking chances for Mayfield. Nicole made an excellent save just before the half time whistle to keep us level.
After half time, our fresh legs started to pay off and we had the majority of the possession. Pearl used her pace effectively to beat defenders, and Alba intercepted the ball, and drove it down the right to give Roedean the best chance at scoring a goal. We had some extremely close chances, but unfortunately, could not find the back of the net. The game finished 0-0.
It was a fantastic game of hockey – well done girls! I am looking forward to our next game against Worth.
