INTRODUCTION From the School’s foundation in 1885, a wide-ranging educational experience has always been central to life at Roedean. The Academic, Pastoral, and Co-Curriculum can be seen as the three pillars of school life. Our genuinely holistic ethos means that the School values highly the many elements of school life which take place beyond the classroom. All the activities which form part of the Co-Curricular programme should provide opportunities for you to develop and thrive, and to enjoy your all-round school experience. There are clubs, societies, and activities for every taste: whether it’s exerting yourself, expressing yourself, enjoying the great outdoors, performing, serving others, taking up a new skill, or exploring your academic interests in greater depth. We hope that you can identify who you want to be in School, and feel prepared for life after Roedean.

EXERTION Athletics This club is available to all pupils to experience a number of different events, including High Jump, track, and other field events. There will also be opportunities for specialists to develop their skills, including working on event technical requirements, running mechanics sessions, and conditioning for relevant events.

Badminton We offer individual and group badminton lessons, and everyone is welcome to play in the weekly Badminton League. Recreational badminton is also available for players who just want to keep fit while having fun.

Badminton League We have a weekly Badminton league, giving you the chance to compete against others and put the skills that you have learnt in your lessons, or at Badminton Club, into action!

Basketball Club This is an evening commitment with an external coach from West Coast Elite. Come along, no matter your ability, to work on your ball dribbling, accurate passing, and sharp-shooting skills! It is a really fun sport, which can be played socially or has the scope to be played competitively against other schools.

Fencing

Depending on the season, cricket club will be indoor or outdoor, and all sessions are open to pupils of all abilities. Squad members are expected to attend net sessions during the Summer term.

Our fencing instructor is a Maître d’Armes (Level 5 at Foil, Épée and Sabre) with the British Academy of Fencing. He has been coaching since the early 2010s and has taken fencers in Foil and Épée to the national British Youth Championships. You can learn to fence in group paid lessons from beginner level to advanced. All equipment will be provided.

Dance Fitness This activity is for anyone hoping to improve their fitness in a fun and engaging way. Using a mixture of online resources for self-directed fitness routines, and face-to-face sessions, Dance Fitness takes choreography, popular dance routines and traditional aerobics moves and combines them into routines that give you an energetic work out, as well as a fun time.

Football Club We will be playing both 5-a-side and 11-a-side games this year, and the grand finale will be our annual Girls Football Tournament in the Summer Term. All abilities are welcome, with the aim of beating the staff football team this year!

EXERTION

Netball Fitness and Tennis Fitness This weekly club incorporates agility and strength training, using required techniques to play well and make excellent progress. It is a club for everyone from squad players or social players. You will be able to put into practice everything you learn in this club whenever you play, and increase your match-day endurance, or just socialise and work out with your friends – all are welcome.

Free swim You can come every week and swim some lengths at your own pace and in your own time. It is a lovely way to end a busy week by relaxing with friends or even swimming on your own to unwind from the day.

Hockey Goal Keeping Club This activity is for new and established goal-keepers to be trained by the Brighton and Hove current men’s 1st team Goal Keeper, Mr Borsoi. All equipment is provided, but if you do have your own, feel free to bring it along.

Horse-riding This paid activity takes place twice a week; once for the Sixth Form and once for all other years. The sessions include work to develop your technique in the arena, as well as hacking on the Downs for those who are sufficiently experienced. This activity takes place at Lancing Equestrian Centre and you will be taken there by minibus.

EXERTION

Indoor Hockey This fast-paced and physical game is played in both the Autumn and Spring terms. It demands exceptionally high levels of stick skill, and team-work, and it is the perfect game to improve your fitness.

Indoor Rowing Indoor Rowing is a weekly club located in the Fitness Suite, where you can learn and master your rowing technique in preparation for the Roedean Indoor Rowing Championships. Come along whatever your experience, and try a fun and different sport.

Open Gym This is an opportunity to use Roedean’s fitness suite to work towards your own fitness goals, with support and guidance from a member of the PE Department – get fit and stay fit!

EXERTION Rounders This fun-filled club offers a number of different ways to play Rounders – with a football one week, with tennis equipment the next – and it is great fun with your friends. You can build your skills, in anticipation of taking part in the fantastic ParentPupil Rounders Tournament in the Summer term.

Rugby Rugby is offered to girls in the Spring term and, although we only play tag rugby, there is also the opportunity to learn how to tackle properly and safely. This invasion game helps players to develop their tactical awareness on the pitch.

Social Netball This is a brilliant opportunity for our older pupils to come along and play some light-hearted social Netball. We will start with a warm up and some ball skills, before going into some match play where you can play for fun in a relaxed setting. All abilities are welcome.

Squad Hockey and Squad Netball Squad Practice is a weekly commitment for players to provide a chance to train and play in your Squads, and for beginners or those new to the sport to try and practise new skills. It is an inclusive club, which means that all pupils are welcome, whatever your playing experience, and you will have access to high-quality coaching from specialists in the PE Department. 10

EXERTION Strength and Conditioning This club takes place on a weekly basis, and focuses on full body conditioning! You will work on techniques to improve your core strength and power, which will complement all your sporting activities. You will be supported through some key exercises that you can then put into practice before matches, or use to keep yourself healthy and reduce injury. All abilities are welcome, and attendance is strongly advised for Sports and Dance Scholars.

Swim Squad This weekly commitment is aimed at competitive swimmers who would like to train for the Swim Team, practise for Sea Swimming, or have an Aquathlon/Triathlon on the way!

Volleyball Are you looking to join the Volleyball team or, just to play socially with friends regardless of your ability, this weekly club is for you! There are competitive opportunities in the Spring Term, and in the Summer term we will be heading down to Yellow Wave for Beach Volleyball.

Junior Drama Club

Animal Beading Club In this club, you will be able to relax and chat with your friends, while engaging in a creative activity. You will follow patterns to make 2D and 3D keyrings and pendants, and you might even decide to sell what you make for charity. It’s a wonderful chance to lose yourself in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

This weekly drama club for Years 7-9 is a brilliant opportunity to collaborate with students who are as passionate as you are about drama. You will improve your confidence and creativity through ‘improv’ and games, as you bring your imaginative characters to life and respond in the moment! This activity will complement drama lessons, bringing together like-minded drama students from different groups to develop a sense of fun, cohesion and ensemble, which will be useful for productions and rehearsals.

Book Clubs

Creative Writing Club

The Roedean Books Clubs are an opportunity to spend time with others in your year group to explore and enjoy reading. Building on our fantastic Reading Awards, SSBA and reading groups, these sessions will involve reading, discussion and creative responses to imaginative worlds, characters and more! From Harry Potter to the Handmaid’s Tale - ways of reading and different types of book will also be explored. You should come if you love reading, want recommendations, or want to spend time with a new group of likeminded peers.

This activity gives students the opportunity to practise creative writing skills in a range of forms and genres. You will have the chance to write and perform poetry, prose, and drama. Your work will ultimately contribute to a publication in which we will compile the most impressive work from the year. It will support your work in your curriculum English lessons, but it will also allow you to explore your creativity further. Some sessions will respond to workshops and talks from visiting authors, or particular texts. You should attend if you love reading and writing, and want to develop your creativity and skills.

Junior Art Club

Ceramics Club

A club for students in Year 7, 8 and 9 to work on your own projects or classwork, and get advice and tips on how to improve your art work. There will also be opportunities to get involved in some exciting community Art projects. This will be useful to any and all art enthusiasts!

This is an exciting opportunity to explore ceramic hand-building techniques, and a range of decorative surface finishes, including glazes, stencilling, oxides, and sgraffito. For those who love Art, this could be a wonderful alternative skill!

EXPRESSION Flute and Recorder Ensemble This group is for recorder or flute, and string instrument players of Grade 4 standard and above, who would like to explore the delights of Baroque chamber music. You will develop valuable experience in ensemble playing, led by a Baroque recorder specialist, which will not only develop your sight-reading skills, but also help you to build a deeper understanding of musical style and practice.

Fretted Acoustics This is a musical group for those who play guitar or double bass. Coached by a guitar specialist, this ensemble focuses on a varied repertoire of musical styles, including the great French jazz guitarist, Django Reinhardt. You will need to be able to play a range of chords in various strumming styles, and some melodic lines as required. Performances will be at informal events, lunchtime busking, and on Open Days. You should join if you are keen to develop your playing further in a fun and focused ensemble.

Mosaic Club Explore and interpret the classical world of gods and goddesses, both Greek and Roman, along with ancient mythologies, including the story of Odysseus, by creating your very own wonderful mosaics!

Recyclable Fashion Business Use your creativity to put a new twist on an old favourite, or perhaps to produce an item of clothing from recycled materials which you might not necessarily associate with clothing!

Digital Photography Using the technology in your pocket and our digital cameras, this project-based activity will guide you through setting up photographs; selecting and editing images digitally and, finally, some of the analogue techniques you can use to alter your images. This would be suitable for students who are working towards their Art GCSE or simply keen to find out more about what you can do with digital photography.

Once you have designed and made your recyclable fashion garments, you will then plan how to market these products in a bid to start a fashion business of your own. You will learn about the fashion industry, the benefits to our planet of sustainable fashion as well as how to produce a product that meets the needs of your target market. If you have a love for fashion, textile design and business then this is the activity for you!

EXPRESSION

Origami Club Use your artistic skills to master the ancient Japanese art of paper-folding to produce wonderful objects and animals – what a fantastic way to focus the mind and lose yourself in creative pursuits.

Life Drawing At various points throughout the year, pupils will have the opportunity to participate in life drawing courses. In these, they will develop and practise their figure drawing skills. For those who are over 16, some workshops will involve working with life models.

Pick Up Your Baton! In this activity, you will learn how to shape the music without making a sound! Explore how conductors lead an ensemble of players or singers through movements and expressions. In March, we will welcome Natalia Luis-Bassa from the Royal College of Music for a conducting class, and if you would like to take part in that workshop, this group will be essential preparation.

Music Lessons Many pupils in the school enjoy learning one or two instruments in addition to their academic studies: specialist tuition from a large professional team of teachers within the Music department, is provided in individual lessons. The whole range of ability is catered for, from beginners to post Grade 8 diploma tuition. We hold regular sessions of examinations at Roedean for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music and Trinity Guildhall. Many pupils enjoy the extra stimulus of studying for grade examinations but this is not a requirement and many pupils have music lessons at school without taking examinations. The approach is entirely based on the individual and a vast range of different musical styles is used in the lessons.

LAMDA

Private Dance Roedean offers private dance in a variety of styles, including ballet, modern, jazz, tap and more. You can take part in individual or group dance lessons, depending on your experience and level of ability. You are able to enter dance examinations, or simply to participate for enjoyment. These lessons are an excellent way to improve fitness, coordination, discipline and performance. Lessons are chargeable. 14

Roedean offers private lessons in a variety of disciplines following the LAMDA syllabus. Verse, Prose, Public Speaking and Musical Theatre are all offered, so there is something for everyone. It is possible to enter LAMDA examinations and Roedean pupils have always achieved excellent results. These lessons provide valuable skills to help you improve your confidence and performance, whilst having fun honing a skill. If you are interested in more information, speak to the Drama Department.

EXPRESSION

Senior Printmaking Club The Printmaking Club is for GCSE and A Level Art students who would like to explore different print processes and techniques. It is a great opportunity if you would like to add printmaking to your skills. The processes you will have the opportunity to learn include screen-printing, photo-polymer etching, dry-point etching, monoprinting, and linocut. This club would suit anyone who is keen to learn new art skills and work in another medium.

Textiles Club In Textiles, you will learn a range of surface pattern design techniques, including printing, machine embroidery, fabric manipulation, and embellishment. You will learn how to apply fabrics and mixed media samples to fashion and sculpture in order to create three-dimensional design. You will be taught how to develop initial explorations further to create sustained outcomes. The samples produced will act as supporting work for your Art and Design academic programme, and add to your body of work.

Song Writing Club This club, open to students in all year groups, will give you the opportunity to develop song writing skills, try different approaches and song writing tools, explore lyric writing, analyse great songs, and, of course, get feedback and constructive criticism on your own songs in a friendly and supportive environment of writers. There will be performance opportunities at school concerts and demo recordings can be arranged. You should come if you have a desire to explore and create your own songs and music.

Technical Theatre You will work with the technical team to learn how to create sound and lighting for a production. With theory and practical exercises, you will build your skills and eventually may be able to be part of the technical team for productions. If you are interested in the technical aspects of theatre and want to be an integral part of the team, this club is for you. 15

Duke of Edinburgh Award A Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is so much more than walking and a ‘pat on the back’ for completing a programme of activities. It is recognition of your successful journey of self-discovery and development, valued by employers and universities alike for the qualities you will have developed if you achieve a DofE Award. Its balanced programme develops the whole person – mind, body and soul – in an environment of social interaction and team working. There are three progressive levels of DofE programmes which, when successfully completed, lead to a Bronze, Silver, or Gold award. This year we are running the Bronze and Silver Award levels – you can join the Bronze level from Year 9 upwards, and the Silver level from Year 10 upwards. Come along if you have a sense of challenge and adventure! (Please note that there is a cost element to this activity.)

Farm Club Farm club takes place every day, come rain or shine. This activity allows you to learn the essential animal husbandry skills to look after livestock. You will learn to look after the school flock of sheep, goats and chickens. It is also a place where you can take a break from the academic and enjoy some fresh air and a very different vista. All are welcome, no experience needed, but you must be willing to lend a hand, or a shovel when required! A must for all aspiring veterinarians.

Gardening and Conservation Club

Sea Swimming

You will have the opportunity to tend a Roedean garden or allotment with a view to selecting plants that support and encourage biodiversity. This activity is perfect for anyone with an interest in botany or ecosystems, as well as those who like being outdoors and feeling useful. You should come along if any of this sounds like something you would enjoy!

The aim is to swim across the Channel in June 2021!

Park Run Once a month, you will be accompanied by School staff to attend and run a local Park Run. It may be the East Brighton Park or the Hove Seafront Park Run. Park Run is a national initiative encouraging people to run a 5K race and receive an official time. You could attend as part of your sports training, as a healthy social activity, or just to challenge yourself and see if you can keep improving your time. All are welcome.

To be ready, you need to attend this club 2/3 times a week as well as already being a strong swimmer. The club starts at 6am on a weekday morning and meets on Marine Parade just outside Jungle Rumble crazy golf. You will swim in two groups for about 30-40 minutes, with a target of building up to a 1-hour swim. You will need parental permission for this paid activity. All you need is a swimming costume, a hat, and some goggles for the swim – wetsuits are not allowed. Join if you are a strong swimmer with a sense of adventure, team work, and a desire to do something a little out of the ordinary!

PERFORMANCE

Choir Roedean School Choir is the main choral group at Roedean, and it is open to all enthusiastic singers from Years 7-13. This is a weekly commitment and is non-auditioned. The Choir performs a very wide range of music to a high standard. We have a great deal of fun learning choral music in many different styles, including songs from the shows, film music, folk music, Christmas music, pop songs, and ballads, as well as a challenging classical repertoire. Members of the Choir rehearse and prepare for school events such as Speech Day and the Carol Services, plus three major concerts each year (two themed gala concerts in the Autumn and Spring terms, and the prestigious Brighton Festival Fringe concert in early May). As well as providing performance experience for all singers, taking part in the Choir also helps to develop teamwork and camaraderie across the year groups.

Chamber Groups The Roedean chamber groups include groups such as string quartets, piano trios, string trios, and woodwind and brass ensembles. In chamber music, there is one player per part and you will rehearse together with music chosen specifically for each ensemble. The groups will be organised for a variety of abilities and the rehearsals are a weekly commitment. The groups work towards performances in the local community, as well as performances for Open Days, masterclasses, and recitals.

Concert Band Roedean Band is a weekly commitment for wind and brass instrumentalists, guitarists, pianists, and percussionists, playing music in wide range of different styles, with pupils from Grade 2 standard and above, from all year groups. This lively group of musicians plays music in wide range of different styles, with some of the music being specifically arranged for the group, and all players having bespoke parts. This is a great opportunity to play in a fun ensemble where you can enjoy practising your performance and sightreading skills, and make friends with other musicians across the year groups. Many in the group are more advanced and lead the ensemble, helping those with less experience. So, if you play woodwind, brass, guitar, piano, or percussion, then come along!

Orchestra Roedean’s main symphony orchestra is a weekly commitment, with a repertoire ranging from film and pop to classical greats and challenging concerto movements, performed by Roedean soloists. Members of the orchestra rehearse and prepare for a number of school events and three major termly concerts, including the prestigious Brighton Festival Fringe concert. As well as providing performance and valuable sight-reading experience for instrumentalists at a range of ability levels, it also helps to develop teamwork and camaraderie across the year groups. Wind and string players need to be at least Grade 5 standard, and our percussion section is formed from girls who take lessons, plus other members who are able music readers. Membership is via audition and invitation. You should come along if you are keen to join a successful ensemble and to gain a wide range of performance experience.

PERFORMANCE Production Rehearsals

Dance Scholars The Junior and Senior Dance Scholars meet on a weekly basis, and the company members rehearse in preparation for the annual dance showcase and other dance performances throughout the year. Being part of a Dance Company will help you strengthen your dance technique, improve your skills, and give you performance experience. As well as this you will develop team-work and choreographic skills, with the opportunity to showcase your own work. You should attend this activity if you have dance experience, love performing, and want to develop your dance skills even further. To take part you must audition, but it’s nothing too scary – why not give it a try?

Starting with an audition process and workshops, rehearsing for productions will develop performance skills, helping you to build on your vocal and movement ability, whether you are cast as ensemble or in a principal role. You will learn to work as part of a team, as well as improving coordination and the discipline of stage craft. Being in a play teaches you about collaboration, cooperation, and creativity, as every role culminates in effective story-telling. You will also gain a taste of the professional world of theatre, as you must be committed to rehearsal schedules, technical rehearsals, call times, and more, all of which require commitment and time-management skills. Leadership roles are also available, for example, Movement or Warm Up Captains, and potential Assistant Director and backstage roles.

The aim of Artemis Performing Arts School is to provide high quality training in acting, singing and dance for students of all ages, who either wish to spend more time enjoying their hobby or who are considering a career in the industry and would like to be pushed further, challenged more and get an idea of what will be required of them to gain a place at drama schools and dance colleges. Students will be visited regularly by West End performers and special guest tutors for workshops and feedback and Q&A sessions.

Samba Percussion Ensemble

In this activity, you will have the opportunity to develop a sound knowledge of different dance styles, develop your own technique, and learn about the complexities of choreography.

Lose yourself in South American rhythm, and let this percussion ensemble group let explore the relationship between music and dance. 19

PERFORMANCE Playing the Organ

Junior Orchestra

This activity is an interesting introduction to the unusual skill of playing the organ, an iconic instrument which you will enjoy in our weekly services. Some proficiency on the keyboard would be invaluable, and don’t forget that you need to be able to play the pedals with your feet at the same time as playing the keyboards!

This is our special music group for developing string players, from beginners to Grade 4 standard. Junior Strings plays in some of the major concerts and other informal performances. The emphasis is on having fun playing together whilst learning the skills of playing in an ensemble. You should join if you love playing and want to gain performance experience.

Schola Cantorum

String Orchestra

This activity provides an exciting opportunity for a group of 6-10 experienced singers to learn and perform Renaissance motets, by composers such as Tallis and Byrd. The ensemble will sing in four or five parts with members of staff singing the Tenor and Bass parts – these early English motets have wonderful closely-woven harmonies, and are a joy to sing. Please enquire about this if you are interested – you will need to be able to sight-sing well, and to hold your line against the other parts. You will develop your singing, learn to listen very closely to your fellow singers, and continue to develop a skill which will underpin your musicianship.

The Roedean advanced string ensemble is for players in all years who are Grade 5 standard or above. Membership is via audition or invitation. If you are an accomplished string musician who wishes to gain performance experiences, you should come along. It is a weekly commitment, where members work together in very focused rehearsals to prepare challenging repertoire in a wide range of styles, including Baroque, Classical, twentieth and twentyfirst century, as well as more popular genres such as film score, jazz, and pop song arrangements. The String Orchestra plays in all major concerts, school events such as Speech Day and Open Days, and also in concerts in the local community.

Friday Singers This group is just for Year 7 girls who love to sing music from musicals, films, and pop songs. The emphasis is on having fun with singing, whilst learning the skills of performance in a group. We will take part in some of the school events and other informal performances. You should come along if you love to sing, especially with friends.

Senior Singers Teatime Recitals At several points in the year, musicians will be invited to, and may also sign up to participate in, tea time recitals for a friendly audience of parents, teachers, and friends. Look out for this opportunity in the student bulletin and on the music boards. The recitals are often linked to our series of masterclasses and are a less formal, more specific, opportunity for performance. 20

Senior Singers is an advanced choral group for auditioned singers in Years 9-13, who also sing in the main choir. It should be of particular interest to those students studying solo singing. Senior Singers performs a wide range of more challenging music, with several voice divisions and solos, both a capella and accompanied music, sacred and secular. Senior Singers is a weekly commitment, where members work together in lively rehearsals to prepare for many different performances. Senior Singers perform in all major school concerts, in many school events, and also in concerts in the local community.

SERVICE Blind Veterans Partnership This weekly activity provides the opportunity for Roedean pupils to socialise with the Blind Veterans at their centre in Ovingdean. The sessions may involve reading, chatting, or just helping out around the place, but all help to build relationships based on a mutual respect and understanding, and provide company for the veterans. Both Roedean pupils and veterans have valued their time together and we look forward to continuing this partnership for a long time to come.

Downs View Volunteering

St Mark’s Junior Choir

The Downs View Special School weekly visit is a fantastic opportunity to learn from and support students with learning difficulties. You will work closely with the fantastic teachers in a classroom environment. There will also be an opportunity for you to fundraise to support the school. You will genuinely be making a difference in the lives of those who you meet and making a valuable contribution to the wider community.

The St Mark’s Junior Choir is a weekly commitment to support the junior choir at St Mark’s Primary School. Showcasing your talent and love for music, you will inspire the choir to new and extraordinary levels. Working closely with the Music teacher, you will choose and teach the choir new and exciting songs each week. This will help to develop your leadership and communication skills, all whilst celebrating the joy of music!

SERVICE St Mark’s Language Buddies The ‘Language Buddies’ make a weekly commitment to support and engage with ESL students from St Mark’s Primary School. You will work one-to-one with the students who speak the same native language as you, to develop their English language skills, vocabulary acquisition, and confidence. The languages currently spoken are Arabic, Bengali, Hungarian, Polish, Spanish, and Urdu. This is an opportunity to support communication and cultural identity.

St Mark’s Reading Buddies The ‘Reading Buddies’ go to St Mark’s Primary School on a weekly basis. You will support a range of students to develop their reading comprehension, fluency, and general confidence. You will be based in all the year groups at St Mark’s from Reception to Year 6. This initiative has been running at St Mark’s for two years and is extremely popular. It is a fantastic opportunity for you to develop life skills, engage with the local community, and encourage the next generation to love reading!

St Mark’s Sports Leaders This is a club that requires your full commitment – you will embark on your Community Sports Leaders Award (Level 2) where you will learn about the skills and qualities required to be an excellent leader. You will complete a theory booklet, take part in lots of practical tasks, and visit St Mark’s every week in small groups to plan, lead, and evaluate your own multi-sports sessions. This club is for anyone who enjoys sport and activities, likes to give back to the community, and enjoys working with young children. 22

SKILLS Design and Technology Club We will look at sustainability in connection with product design, and there will be a link with the Roedean garden allotment. We will also use the laser-cutter to make items which could be sold at the Christmas Fair.

Senior Baking Club Run by Maz’s Kitchen, this activity for those in Years 9-13, is a great opportunity to develop skills in a wide range of savoury and sweet baking work. You will have the opportunity to work from, and experiment with, recipes, and develop some technical baking skills as the club progresses. You should go if you are looking to gain skills ahead of family occasions, university living, or entering competitions!

Digital Leaders Digital Leaders from Years 8 and 9 will learn how to get the very best from digital technology, while also remaining safe on line – the modern world is dominated by the world of technology which is constantly developing and changing, and Roedean’s Digital Leaders will be preparing themselves to use it in the most productive and secure way.

Board Games Café This is a weekly meet up in the Club House, which provides you with an opportunity to hang out and socialise with friends in an informal setting, whilst honing your board game skills. Come along if you want to meet new people, compete in a laidback and friendly setting, and develop your chess, Scrabble, or Connect 4 skills!

No-Cook Cooking Club Aprons on everybody! ‘No cook cooking’ gives you the exciting opportunity to practise your cooking skills by making a range of easy no-cook recipes. You will have the opportunity to make a range of fruity snacks, along with sweet and savoury treats to share with your family and friends.

Digital Leaders The Childnet Digital Leaders Programme empowers young people to educate their peers, parents and teachers about staying safe online. Throughout the programme Digital Leaders are given the tools they need to champion digital citizenship in their educational setting and community, helping them and their peers to make the most of their time online. You will be given online training and ongoing support and throughout the programme there are opportunities for you to engage with top tech companies, government, and policy makers, to have a say in creating a better internet for the future.

SKILLS Economics Debating Society You will discuss how the stock market works, analysing trends in data to work out what, and when, to buy and sell, as well as developing your data skills and your knowledge of an important aspect of wealth creation and finance for firms. This activity is valuable for general economic awareness, and it also develops useful personal and professional skills for life!

Karate Learn and study this exhilarating martial art, led by a professional coach. You will have to pay to attend this class. You will learn physical movements, as well as working on your fighting technique and spirit.

Sewing Club At our Sewing Club, there are a range of simple projects for you to get started with, or, if you feel confident, why not propose your own project and challenge yourself to get it completed? The focus is on quiet and focused development of sewing skills, patience, and purpose. You should go if you would like to add a skill, or build on something you have enjoyed from HHH.

Trampolining Club Go sky high at our weekly Trampolining Club, with a chance to work towards your Trampolining Badges, and it is ideal if you are doing GCSE PE. Everyone is welcome, whatever your ability.

Tycoon Enterprise Competition Tycoon is a unique national enterprise competition run by Peter Jones from the BBC’s Dragon’s Den. It is for students aged 6 to 18, so anyone at Roedean can take part. Every participating team writes a business plan, can be lent money (between £1000£2000), starts a business, and competes with other student companies. Run over a 7-week period for Years 7-9 and Years 10-11, and 22 weeks for Years 12-13, it is a chance to find out if you could be a successful entrepreneur. Why not see if you can become the Roedean winner, or even reach the Tycoon National Final at Buckingham Palace and win £1000 to grow your business further? You should come if you have an interest in business and entrepreneurship.

Chinese Club According to the Chinese calendar, this year is the Year of the Rat. Why not join the Chinese Club, for anyone in Years 7-9, to learn more about this fascinating culture? You will learn how to introduce yourself, learn about Chinese characters and use calligraphy, and find out more other cultural aspects, such as Chinese New Year and the Spring Festival with its famous dragon boat races. It is a great opportunity if you are interested in learning Chinese for fun or as part of your curriculum.

Junior Classics Club Have you ever wished there was a club that combined your love for art, literature, history, politics, philosophy and mythology? Then come to this club and find out about where it all started! Everything is better in a toga, and Classics and Archaeology Club will be a chance for you to learn about the most glorious and grotesque bits of the ancient world, exploring anything from Greek drama to Roman graffiti through creative projects, independent investigation, and even the occasional dig! You’ll learn how to be an excellent researcher, an analytical thinker and a critical reader, and how to impress with your new expertise in the wild world of Ancient Greece and Rome.

Culture Society Culture Society is a student led group that celebrates, and educates on, the diverse cultures that make up our community. It provides an opportunity to increase awareness and understanding of different cultures, as well as sharing experiences, and, sometimes, foods! You should go if you are interested in getting to know your neighbours.

Eco-Council Eco-Council is Roedean’s student led panel on finding ways to make our school more sustainable. It will provide a valuable insight into democracy and collaboration at work, as well as providing a positive outlet for those of you who are passionate about the environment. You will develop a variety of transferable skills that are useful for seminar groups at university and in the world of work. That’s why international companies and organisations are always on the look-out for Germanspeaking employees. And wouldn’t it be nice to be prepared for your next visit to Berlin, Munich, or Frankfurt, and to be able to speak and understand some of the language? Come to our German Language Club, aimed at Years 7-8, and find out that learning German is useful and can be a lot of fun!

LGBTQ+ Society This is a student-led society that provides an opportunity for all students identifying as LGBTQ or an ally to come and spend time together celebrating, and educating yourselves on, all the wonderful aspects of the LGBTQ community. The society will explore contributions in all areas of academia and society, across arts and sciences, as well as inviting guest speakers, and just providing a safe and fun space to hang out with like-minded peers. You are welcome if you are keen to explore your own sexuality and gender identity, or to learn more about how to support those who are doing so. Please be aware that attendance at the society constitutes an agreement to respect the privacy of the other individuals there and to treat all with sensitivity and kindness.

History Society History Society is an opportunity to stretch your historical knowledge, debate ‘History in the News’ and explore some of the big ideas that underpin the shaping of the past. Come along if you are up for the challenge! Through a wide range of activities, you will unlock the past in a fun and engaging way, bringing history to life and broadening your understanding. This is a great way to challenge your thinking, explore new history and have fun in the process!

Roedean Geographical Society is a student-led club open to all students with an interest in Geography. It is unashamedly academic in its aims to introduce new concepts and challenge received information. So whether you are interested in the human or natural world, or the interdependence of the two, come and discuss current affairs, engage in geographical debate, and enjoy learning about burning issues of your choice.

History Detectives This activity will focus on the great mysteries in history – you will learn how to analyse information, problem-solve, and use clues to unravel these mysteries…

Hidden Histories This club is an exploration of historical events which are not normally covered in the curriculum, from a range of diverse cultures and time periods. If you love history, this will be a brilliant opportunity to broaden your horizons and widen your perspective.

VegeSoc This discussion-based society is an opportunity for students to share documentaries, recipes, and blogs to explore vegetarianism and veganism. The movement is particularly strong in the local area, so this would be good if you are vegetarian or vegan, or you’re interesting in finding out more. The intention is that the discussion will lead to a written outcome in due course.

Astronomy Club

MedSoc is a student-led society which meets each week for students in Years 10-13 who share an interest in entering a career in health care. The group discusses current hot topics in Medicine, shares ideas and key lessons learnt from any talks, work experience, or voluntary work attended, and even has a go at diagnosing various patient conditions, using the problem-based learning approach.

We live in a wonderful universe, yet most of us don’t look beyond our little patch of it called Earth. In the Astronomy Club, we will start to explore the remaining 99.99999999999999% of the universe using telescopes. As the English weather is notoriously unpredictable, we can also explore the universe by doing our own research, presenting, and listening to each other, sharing what we have learnt. When the weather is clear, we have 5 telescopes, so everyone should get a chance to see close up our neighbours like the Moon, Mars, Venus, Jupiter, star nurseries like the Orion Nebula, and possibly other galaxies.

If you have an interest in Medicine, Dentistry or Veterinary Sciences, this is for you! Because the society is student-led, it can be tailored to focus on what you want and what will be most beneficial to you during the application process. It’s the only club with a focus solely on medical and biochemical issues, and it will be incredibly helpful for anyone looking to make an application to study one of these subjects at university.

You will need warm clothes as clear winter nights can get very cold! You should come if you want to be able to navigate your way around the wonders of the night sky!

Junior STEM Club STEM Club is an enrichment session which seeks to broaden the curriculum, giving you the chance to explore subjects like science, technology, engineering and maths in less formal settings. This is a fun, practical club, and through taking part students can challenge their abilities and learn more about STEM subjects and the influence they can have on their life and the world around them.

STEM F24 Electric Car This is an exciting opportunity to continue working on the F24 electric car which has been built by Roedean students over recent years. You will learn how the car works, and investigate ways to improve the performance, developing its gear ratios, aerodynamics, speed to weight ratio, and more. You will also learn how to use the electronic system which monitors the car performance, such as current and motor temperature. In the summer term, you will get a chance to race the car against other teams at Goodwood motor circuit – this is a fantastic event which is a great team experience. This activity is guaranteed to be interesting and fun, and it will also be excellent experience for those interested in a career in Engineering.

CAD Club In this club, you will learn how to use professional advanced Computer Aided Design (CAD) software, and be able to draw complex shapes in 3 dimensions. Where possible, we can use the 3D printer to physically make the shapes that you draw. As well as being great fun, this club is excellent experience for anyone hoping to pursue engineering, design or architecture. It would also be very useful for those girls taking part in the F24 Electric Car Club. Certificates of Achievement are provided on completion.

Design Ventura Design Ventura is the Design Museum’s awardwinning design and enterprise challenge for students, supported by Deutsche Bank’s global youth engagement programme Born to Be. Each year, students aged 13 – 16 are challenged to design a new product for the Design Museum Shop. What an amazing opportunity!

Junior Mathematics Society This is a weekly society for students of all abilities in Years 7-9 who love Mathematics and want to find out more about its place in culture and science. You will learn about topics outside the syllabus, such as topology, number systems, and code-breaking, and you will encounter mathematical games and puzzles. There will also be opportunity to develop your problem-solving skills in preparation for the UKMT Mathematical Challenges, and the Team Maths Challenge. Come along if you love maths and problem solving.

STEM Senior Chemistry Olympiad This is an opportunity to challenge yourself and get training in how to tackle Olympiad problems from the Royal Society of Chemistry’s international competition. If you relish the challenge of solving problems and want to stretch your understanding of Chemistry beyond the scope of your current course - this activity is for you! You will develop analytical and problemsolving skills and will learn to apply these skills to questions that you’ve never seen before. So, if you enjoy Chemistry and problem solving and you want an opportunity to hang out with the Chemistry Department whilst honing your skills, then sign up!

Stretch and challenge your understanding of Physics by tackling some really tough questions which go beyond the content of the specifications. This activity, for Years 10-11, will improve your exam performance, especially if you are aiming for Grade 9. It will also give you a deeper understanding of the subject and look great on your CV or UCAS application. These sessions will provide you with lots of practice so you are ready for the challenge itself later in the term. If you are up for a Physics challenge, this is for you!

This is a weekly society for students in Years 10-13 who love Mathematics and who want to find out more about its applications to problem-solving; you will learn about topics outside the syllabus, such as the mathematics of groups, game theory, and queueing. There will also be opportunity to discuss the latest news in the subject, and for you to present your own research on areas of mathematical interest. You will develop your problem-solving skills in preparation for the UKMT Mathematical Challenges, and the Senior Team Maths Challenge. If you are intending to study Mathematics (or a related subject) at university, attendance is highly recommended.

Lego Engineering Club If you have an interest in Engineering or STEM, or just want to try your hand at practical problemsolving, then this is the club for you. Using Lego, we will explore different ways of building solutions to challenging real world problems. You will not only develop your understanding of physical systems and engineering principles, but also work together as teams, think creatively about solving problems, compete to find the best solutions and have some fun too. Whilst Lego is a great toy, it also uses the same ideas that engineers, architects, and mechanics utilise in their work. This club is a real must for anyone interested in any career within STEM.

Academic Lectures and Seminars

The Junior Academic Discussion Group provides girls in Years 7-9 with a chance to talk to Sixth Form students about any academic interests. Each week there will be a new topic, so feel free to just drop in to the ones you’re interested in, or come every week!

This is a weekly programme of lectures for the whole school community. Lectures are delivered on a wide range of topics and from a wide range of speakers, including teachers, local academics, local professionals, and students. Each week, the Academic Prefects will curate a brief reading list to go alongside the lecture so that you can enhance your understanding. Attendance is highly recommended for Academic Scholars. You should come if you are interested and engaged, and you want to know more!

We’ll give everyone a brief introduction to the chosen topic, and then give you a chance to answer discussion-based questions and also answer any that you have. Because this is a student-run club, we can talk about anything you find interesting. Topics can vary from space dust to EU politics to female composers in the media – nothing is off limits. If you have any suggestions for topics, talk to one of the Academic Prefects and we’ll see what we can do!

Senior Classicists Come along to further your understanding and interest in the Classical World! Whether it is exploring evidence of Byzantine monasteries or Persian shipwrecks, we will use this time to work on projects and essays for National Competitions that will not only allow you to broaden your knowledge, but also give you great content for your personal statement and interviews. Take this opportunity to become a next level Classicist who can impress with a vast wealth of facts and experience writing at a university level.

THINKING Academic Mentoring Project For years 9&10, the Academic Mentoring Project gives pupils the space and tools to develop an independent project related to a freely chosen academic topic. Pupils will be assigned a mentor, with whom they will develop a programme of research and development, and will also meet as a group with our Assistant Head: Co-Curricular and Scholarships to discuss progress. The course includes 4 workshops with a public speaking consultant from Talking Ape and culminates in the delivery of a presentation. Successful projects in the past have gone on to feature in the Academic Lecture programme, assemblies, and even helping to inform school strategies. This is a great opportunity to develop core academic and presentation skills, whilst also honing your voice.

Debating Society Public speaking is without doubt a skill that can be benefited from throughout life and indeed beyond Roedean. You will have the opportunity to learn the structure and style of British Parliamentary Style debate and challenge yourself by creating and preparing motions as well as debating individually and in teams. Once confident and experienced you will have the opportunity to debate not just internally, but also against other schools. Come along even just to learn how to win any debate you find yourself in with friends!

Senior English Society This group meeting will be to follow up and enrich aspects of the A Level Literature curriculum. Current and prospective students of English will be welcome. It will be partly student-led and will involve film screenings, discussions of books, mini-lectures, social events, debates, and visiting speakers. It will serve as a great introduction to further and higher study of English Literature, and will provide experiences that will enrich UCAS applications. You should attend if you are considering English at A Level or university level, if you wanted to choose English A Level, but couldn’t make it fit with your other selections, or just because you love reading and philosophising!

Philosophy Society

This activity will provide you with the chance to research a topic which is of personal interest to you, and then to present your research in a variety of ways – this is to demonstrate your research skills, your ability to synthesise information, and to present it in a clear and concise way. This can be an external qualification, which equates to half of a GCSE.

Philosophy Society is much more than a debate club – Philosophy isn’t just speculation, where all answers are equal or correct; philosophers can be very wrong and PhilSoc will help you spot when they are! Good philosophical discussion means that you will know when you are being misled or lied to, that you can form logical arguments of your own, and that you can explore some of the biggest questions of all time. Philosophy helps you explore the world around you on deep level - curious minds and relentless questions are welcome. If you want to make yourself very difficult to beat in an argument, come to PhilSoc!

Model United Nations The United Nations is an organisation where countries come together to cooperate. Created after the Second World War, the UN is an attempt to make the world a more peaceful place, where human rights are protected, and international law is upheld. At MUN, you will learn how this organisation operates and will simulate its work. You will research different countries, represent their interests, and negotiate with other delegates. This is an excellent opportunity to learn about international relations and to sharpen your debating skills. In particular, Sixth Formers interested in reading social sciences or humanities at university will benefit from honing their knowledge of the current challenges facing world order. There will be opportunities to work with other schools at MUN meetings throughout the year.

Politics Club In the current climate of political uncertainty and volatility, at Politics Club, we try to make sense of what is actually happening. If you find yourself confused about Brexit, concerned about climate change, or curious about the next election, then come along. In a typical meeting, we debate what is going on in the news and watch some clips. Politics Club is a great way to explore important questions you are uncertain about in a friendly environment. Sixth Formers in particular will benefit from the opportunity to enhance their UCAS applications, and be better equipped with knowledge of the salient debates among academics, journalists, and politicians.

THINKING Spanish Translation Bee This activity for Years 8 and 9 is a fun way to practise your Spanish translation in a competitive environment. You will be preparing for an interschool competition, so why not join in and see how well you can do?

Pre-University English Literature

Top University Programme is a weekly activity aimed at the Sixth Form; World Scholars’ Cup is open to anyone in Year 9 upwards. In both activities, we wiill develop and explore some of the key skills and habits of thinking required for success at a top university, including supra-curricular reading, flexible thinking, dealing with challenging questions, and more. You should come if you are considering applying to a university that will have an entry requirement with a range of A*/A grades at A Level and is likely to interview as part of the application process.

If you think that you may wish to study English Literature or a MFL course with a strong literary component, this activity is for you. You will have the chance to develop high-level literary analytical skills, as well as how to present your interpretations in a clear and coherent way.

Newnham Essays This is a national essay competition, run by Newnham College, Cambridge (our School was evacuated to the Lakes during the War), requires a well-researched long essay, which is then presented in a clear and highly-respectful way. You will be able to develop a deep interest in your chosen topic, and this combination of research and analysis will stand you in very good stead when applying to and studying at university.

UKLO Senior and Intermediate Linguistics Olympiad If you love languages and code-breaking, then this activity is for you! Through exploration of different linguistic systems and scripts, you will develop the ability to identify markers which show plurals, different tenses, whether a noun is the subject or the object in the sentence – this will be in preparation for entry into the UK Linguistics Olympiad, at both Senior and Intermediate level. If you love languages, have a logical approach to linguistic analysis, and are unflappable under pressure, this activity is for you!
