The Performing Arts department at Roedean proudly presents a diverse, challenging and entertaining programme of events and performances for 2019-2020. The Performing Arts at Roedean are a rich mixture of the classic, the traditional and the contemporary, and of pupil-led and teacher-directed performances. There is a vast range of opportunities available to all girls, from large-scale performances and events to small groups, masterclasses, and teatime recitals. We look forward to welcoming you at these events and hope you enjoy the performances on offer.

Drama Scholars’ Performance
We are extremely excited to welcome a huge West End performer to the school, who will be working with girls across all age groups throughout the day, culminating in a short performance at the end of the day. The girls will be learning original material from the show and this is a wonderful opportunity for them.
Please join us for an evening of monologues, duologues and small group extracts as we explore a range of plays written by female playwrights in order to give voice to the suffragette movement 1907-1919. Suffrage plays served to reveal issues behind the suffrage movement. These plays also revealed many of the double standards that women faced on a daily basis and often told the stories of everyday women.

Dance Showcase The dance showcase is a celebration of all the work that the girls have achieved in their co-curricular dance lessons and dance company training. This year the event will be titled Instagram vs Reality, with dance pieces interpreting the pressures on teenagers in modern society, particularly from social media and the self-esteem and body image issues that so many young girls face every day. These stories will be showcased through ballet, tap, modern and contemporary with choreography from both teachers and students alike.

Wind and Brass Masterclass & Teatime Recital

A day of masterclasses for our woodwind and brass players led by the Galliard Ensemble. Former BBC New Generation Artists, the Galliard Ensemble is one of Britain’s leading chamber groups, with repertoire ranging from Mozart and Beethoven to Berio and Birtwistle. The Galliard Ensemble is known for its virtuosic, entertaining and distinctive performance style and its recordings have been widely praised; the Sunday Times, BBC Music Magazine and Gramophone have all selected a Galliard Ensemble CD as “outstanding” or as Critics’ Choice. Currently in its 25th year, the ensemble has performed in many of the world’s leading venues and festivals, including the Wigmore Hall, South Bank Centre, Bridgewater Hall and at the BBC Proms. The day will conclude with a spectacular pupil and Galliard Ensemble combined performance.

Roedean’s musical community comes together to bring you a breath-taking programme of beautiful music inspired through references to different countries, cities and travel. The orchestras, choirs and concert band will all be performing in our first major concert of the academic year. The theme for this concert has been chosen by a group of musicians from across the school. The performance will begin with music from a well- known British Airways advertisement to whisk you away on a musical adventure around the globe. Musical highlights in the programme will include Pirates of the Caribbean, Mendelssohn’s Italian Symphony, Toto’s Africa, The Prince of Egypt, New York, New York, California Dreaming and more, all linked by music from the Starlight Express. There will be much to delight all musical tastes in this gala concert and we warmly invite everyone to attend.

3Fall Dance Company from the University of Chichester will be visiting Roedean this January to give a workshop to GCSE students focusing on conÂŹtemporary technique and learning repertoire from a profession work. The company will also be performing to the school performing three works by professional choreographers. The company is formed of 3rd Year students studying for a BA (Hons) in Dance. The GCSE dance students will also perform with the company in the afternoon performance.

Helen Longton-Howorth comes to lead all Year 9 students in an enjoyable day of workshops playing instruments in a Steel Band. A Teatime Showcase of the students’ performances will be given at the end of the day. These interactive steel band workshops are also known as steel pan workshops or steel drum workshops. They represent a fantastic opportunity for active learning with pupils taking part in an activity that is a lot of fun. The Steel Pan The steel pan is a very special instrument in terms of its suitability for both teaching and learning. Producing a note is easy. People love hitting drums, because the sonic rewards are so immediate and satisfying.

A day of masterclasses for our chamber groups and string instrumentalists coached by the stunning Sacconi Quartet. We are very fortunate to have such a high calibre group of musicians returning to Roedean to direct and challenge our musicians. The award-winning Sacconi Quartet is recognised for its unanimous and compelling ensemble, consistently communicating with a fresh and imaginative approach. Performing with style and commitment, the Quartet is known throughout the world for its creativity and integrity of interpretation. Formed in 2001, its four founder members continue to demonstrate a shared passion for string quartet repertoire, infectiously reaching out to audiences with their energy and enthusiasm. The Quartet has enjoyed a highly successful international career, performing regularly throughout Europe, at London’s major venues, in recordings and on radio broadcasts. The Sacconi is Quartet in Association at the Royal College of Music. The day will conclude with a Teatime Recital. 14

In a cornucopia of different musical styles, Roedean’s musicians, including all our major groups will perform uplifting highlights from Evita, Dear Evan Hansen, Miss Saigon, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Eleanor Rigby, Hey Jude plus masterpieces from the world of opera, Hansel and Gretel, Orpheus in the Underworld and Gianni Schicchi to NAME but a few and many more. Piano Masterclass & Teatime Recital A day of masterclasses for our pianists led by the internationally renowned pianist, Clélia Iruzun. With her combination of colourful Brazilian spirit and musicianship, London-based pianist Clélia Iruzun is one of the most exciting musicians to emerge onto the international scene in recent years. Clélia’s childhood was spent in the rich cultural atmosphere of Rio de Janeiro. At 17 Clélia won a scholarship to study with the highly regarded Maria Curcio in London, and then with Christopher Elton at the Royal Academy of Music where she graduated with the Recital Diploma. Her mentors have included Fou Ts’Ong, Stephen Kovacevich, and her compatriots, the great pianists Jacques Klein and Nelson Freire. Clélia Iruzun has given recitals and concerto performances all over the world. Her tours in China have included recitals at the Grand Theatre in Shanghai, Hangzhou, Ningbo and the Forbidden City Concert Hall in Beijing. The day will conclude with a Teatime Recital, plus a short performance from Clélia herself.

With one of the most uplifting musical scores, featuring songs such as Good Morning Baltimore and You Can’t Stop The Beat, this is the ultimate feel good musical and will have you going home feeling full of joy! This production will be directed by Katy Markey, with musical direction by Veronica Fewkes and choreography by Tiffany Wells.

Brighton Fringe Roedean’s musicians are joined by parents, staff and local musicians to perform our annual community concert in the Brighton Festival Fringe. Our concert, featuring concerto movements performed by some of Roedean’s music scholars, will be concluded with the mighty choral work, Carmina Burana.

Year 8 Gamelan Workshop & Teatime Recital John Pawson from the Royal College of Music returns to Roedean to lead all Year 8 students in an exotic day of Indonesian Gamelan performance workshops. A gamelan is a set of instruments consisting mainly of gongs, metallophones and drums. The word ‘gamelan’ means ‘to hammer’. Gamelan music is found mainly in Bali and Java. It has political and religious roots and plays an important part in sustaining traditional life. It can be heard at celebrations and theatre performances. It is used to accompany shadow puppet plays, poetry and drama. It is not normally written down but passed on through oral tradition - players learn by mastering techniques and memorising the music. It is played together as a group and emphasises community over individual values. The day will conclude with a Teatime Recital, to which our Year 8 parents/ guardians are warmly invited.

Marcia’s vocal expertise ranges across opera, music theatre, and sacred music. She has sung throughout Europe and North America, learning her craft as a soloist at the Deutsche Oper Berlin before embarking on a freelance career. She toured as Clare in the RedBlonde Productions In & Out of Love, 2011–14, and is currently touring as the Conférencier in the new operetta sensation, Bouffe! 2015 saw a reprise of her Suzuki in the acclaimed David Freeman production of Madam Butterfly at the Royal Albert Hall, which she sang in the première and all five revivals. In 2013 she became Associate Lecturer in German for the BMus Vocal Performance Programme at University of Chichester where she enjoys 1-to-1 tutoring of pupils in opera, concert, and Music Theatre repertoire. As teacher and mentor of young singers, Marcia has prepared pupils for examinations at the highest level, as well as coaching audition repertoire and roles. She has been an Associate Artist with Glyndebourne Opera Education, and is a sought after animateur and choral conductor. She has recently been appointed vocal tutor to the choristers of Chichester Cathedral. The day will conclude with a Teatime Recital. 22
A huge cast of girls in Years 7-10 present this tragedy based on Shakespeare’s classic play which tells the tale of an age-old vendetta between two powerful families of Verona. A group of masked Montagues risk further conflict by gatecrashing a Capulet party. A young lovesick Romeo Montague falls instantly in love with Juliet Capulet, who is due to marry her father’s choice, the County Paris. With the help of Juliet’s nurse, the women arrange for the couple to marry the next day, but Romeo’s attempt to halt a street fight leads to the death of Juliet’s own cousin, Tybalt, for which Romeo is banished. In a desperate attempt to be reunited with Romeo, Juliet follows the Friar’s plot and fakes her own death. The message fails to reach Romeo, and believing Juliet dead, he takes his life in her tomb. Juliet wakes to find Romeo’s corpse beside her and kills herself. The grieving family agree to end their feud.

Roedean Performing Arts Gala 2020 Roedean Theatre presents a black-tie evening celebrating the work of our Performing Arts students over the course of the academic year. Tickets musts be booked in advance and drinks and canapĂŠs are included within the ticket.

The four main Houses present a 15 minute programme of music involving all the girls in each of the Houses. There are several different awards as part of the event including, best solo performance, best version of the set piece, best choral arrangement, best piano accompanist, best use of rehearsal time and more. The musical programmes are devised by musicians in Y12 who direct the performances in the festival, adjudicated by a visiting professional musician.
