The saxophone is mostly made of brass but is classified as a woodwind instruments for reasons stated later on in the PowerPoint.

Many different styles of music can be played on the saxophone, here are 2 styles. Tequila is a more upbeat happy piece of music. The saxophone starts playing 19 seconds in.

Body and soul is a famous jazz piece. This version is played by sonny stitt. The saxophone starts 18 seconds in.

Upper saxophone The saxophone is played when you press certain keys down to create a melody. On the diagram to the left it shows tings related to the upper part of the saxophone. The saxophone belongs to the woodwind section of the orchestra because it has a reed.


There are different saxophones you use depending on your height or the sound you wish to create. The three most common are alto, soprano and tenor sax. They vary in pitch order from high to low.

• The standard saxophone has 23 keys • Saxophone reeds are made out of the plant Arundo donax, which is considered an invasive plant in the US. • There is such a thing as a slide saxophone • (It was a quirky invention of the early 20th century, and it never really caught on.)
