Introduction

Perhapsthemostimportantaspectofthisterm,wasourdecision asaSchooltomakeuptotenBursaryplacesavailablefor UkrainianRefugees.Itisveryhardtoimaginetheimpactthe continuedwarishavingonUkrainians.Wehopethatbyoffering theseplaces,wewillbeabletohelpsupportthesetenstudents andtheirfamiliesastheyadjusttolifeintheUK.Tobeableto continueRoedean’sstrongtraditionofofferingsupporttothose thatneeditinthiswayisincrediblyimportanttousasaSchool. 2021-22wasanotherincredibleyearatRoedean,andIamonce againinaweofallofthegirls’achievementsthisyear. AlthoughtheSummerTermistheshortest,itisdefinitelynotthe quietestandtheSchooldiarywasfullofevents,exams, celebrationsandperformances.Followingonfromthesuccessof thenetballteamsintheSpringTerm,Summersawthefocus movetocricketandathletics,andofcourseourincredibleteam ofsixstudentswhoswamtheEnglishChannelinJuneinaidof theUkrainianBursaryappeal–raisingover£6,000intheprocess.

ThePerformingArtsdepartmenthavetreatedustosome spectacularperformancesthisterm.Withtheusualhighlevelof talentdisplayedattheregularTeaTimeRecitals,aswellasa wonderfulSummerConcert,BrightonFringeFestivalConcert, DanceShowcaseandofcoursethisallculminatedinthesuperb productionofMatildainJune.

Despitetherehavingnotbeenpublicexaminationsforthelast twoyears,thestudentsinYears11and13,tooktheexamsin theirstride.I’mincrediblyproudofthemall.IalsowishtheClass of’22theverybestastheymoveintothenextstageoftheir lives,andofcoursewelcomethemintotheOldRoedeanian family.Theyhaveshownremarkableresilienceduringtheirtime atRoedean,andIamsurewilltakethisforwardwiththem.

Soitwashardtobelievethatintwomonthswewouldbe readytocover28milesasateamofsix!Butwepersevered withourearly-morningtraining,andwiththeenthusiastic andpositivesupportwereceivedfromDrHobbs,Miss Wakeling,MissBamford,MissJohannisson,andMr Serafimov,wetransformedintoastronganddetermined team,readytotakeonthewildestwavesandeventhe dreadedjellyfish.

RoedeaniscelebratingnationalrecognitionintheprestigiousIndependent SchoolsoftheYearawardsfor2022.Withcompetitionfierceacrossthe andholisticapproachinindependentschools.Wearehugelyproudofthe

entireschoolcommunity,andlookforwardtothelistoffinalistsbeingannouncedon7September.

CrossChannelSwim CongratulationstoBella,Clara,Liv,Rose,AmyandJemima, ourincrediblesea-swimmingteam,oncompletingtheir Cross-Channelrelay.ThegirlsleftDoverjustafter11pmon Wednesday15thJune,andtakingitinturnsinhourlong stretches,theyreachedthebeachnearGapGrisinFranceat 12:45pmonThursday16thJune.

OnthefirstdayofChannel-swimtraining,waybackinApril, wegaspedasweenteredtheicywater–atjust10.5 degrees,welasted20minutesandcameoutwithrattling teethand“ice-creamhead”.

Beforetheirswim,thegirlstookonhoursoftraining, spendingtimeacclimatisingtothecoldwaterandbuilding theirendurance.Thislaidthefoundationsfortheir outstandingachievement,butallthetrainingintheworld couldnothavepreparedthemfortherealityofsettingoff onthisadventureinthedarkwateroftheopenseaunder themoonlight.Butasateam,whichhadbondedovertime throughthissharedexperience,andbrilliantlysupportedby DrHobbs,MissWakelingandMrSerafimov,theydidit! Jemima,HeadGirl,andSwimTeammember,sharedher thoughtsontheexperience:

Swimming200mtoadesertedbeachinthedeadofnight wassurreal,butturningtowavetotheboatasIreachedthe shorefeltmagicalinthelightofabeautifulstrawberry moon.Exhilarated,at11.10pm,Ibeganmyfirstswimfrom SamphireHoebeachtowardsthelittleboatthatwas waitingtofollowustoFrance!Mysecondswim,atdawn, wastoughagainstthetide,butswimminginthelightof daywaslessdisorientating–althoughitmeantIcouldsee allthejellyfishlurkinginmypath!Andyes,theydidsting!By farthemostarduouswasmythirdhour–DrHobbshadjust explainedtomethatforourswimtobeofficiallyrecorded,I neededtoswimveryfastandhardagainstthestrongtideto getusbackoncourse.Andwemadeit!Iwaseven accompaniedbyadolphinforpartoftheway–perhapsit wasaguidingspirit? IamnowtheproudownerofatinyFrenchpebble!My shoulderswerekillingmeforacoupleofdaysthough–but itwasworthitforthefantasticwelcomewereceivedfrom everyoneatSchoolonourreturn,andfortheamazing amountofmoneydonatedtotheUkrainianappeal.Thank you!

ThePridecelebrationscontinuedthroughouttheday,witha collaborativeartinstallation,alunchtimelectureonthe HistoryofPride,andPSHElessonsprovidinganopportunity tolearnmore.

PrideCelebrations

WiththeSchooltoolargetoallfitinoneplaceonsiteforSpeechDay, ithasbeenanumberofyearssincewehavebeenabletoholdonefor everyonetogether,andwithCovid,afewyearssincewehavebeen abletohaveSpeechDayatall.Soitwasfantastictoallcelebrate togetherattheBrightonDomeonthelastWednesdayofterm.The rangeofprizesandawards,coupledwiththevariedperformancesand studentreviews,presentedanexcitingsnapshotoftheRoedean experience.Sharingherexperiencesandthejourneyshehasbeenon sinceleavingRoedean,ourguestspeaker,BeatrixOngMBE(No.3, 1992-94),offeredastrongmessagewhichwasrelevanttoevery studentthere:ifyouwantsomethingenoughandyouaredetermined toachieve,giveyourselfpermissiontogoforit!

CongratulationstoMrsWoodbridge, bothcasts,andthebackstagecrew.

OurmainSchoolproduction, Matilda, wasatriumph,evenmoresoasithad doublecasting.Thismeantthatwe hadtheopportunitytoseetwo differentMatildas,MissTrunchbulls andMissHoneys,eachwiththeirown interpretationofthecharacters.

Matilda

TomarkPrideMonth,weheldaspecialalfrescoassemblyin theQuadwiththetheme‘whatPridemeanstome’.During theassembly,thePrideflagwasraisedontheflagpole,and therewasabrilliantperformanceofLadyGaga’s BornThis Way byagroupofsingersfromacrosstheSchool.

SchoolHighlights

HavingbeenpostponedinDecemberduetohighwinds, Mayfinallysaw6studentsandstaffmemberstakeonthe i360’s165-metreabseil.CongratulationstoSophia, JemimaandMolly(ouroutgoingHeadGirlsandCharity PrefectinYear13),MrandMrsWilsonandDrBarrand. Sophiasaid, ‘Bestbirthdaypresentever–whatagreat waytocelebratemy18th!’;Mollysaid,‘Iwassonervous before,butthenwhenitstarteditwasamazing!’,and Jemimaadded,‘Iwon’tforgetthisinahurry,andIlove thattheSchoolissupportingsuchimportantcharities.’ Aspartoftheabseil,theSchooldonationed£1500to Raystede,alocalcharityprotectinganimalsfromneglect andabuse,andoneofourSchoolcharities.

Injusttwohours,thebookswerecompleteandsubmitted forjudgingbytheBookNook.Judgingwasincredibly difficultbecausethequalitywassohigh,butthewinners were TheUnicornWhoLostHisHorn byagroupofYear9 studentsand FredSavestheZoo byagroupofgirlsfrom Year10.

WehadtwoteamscompetingintheBrightonandHove AthleticsChampionshipsthissummer.TheInters,madeup forfourYear10s,andoneYear11,andtheJuniors,madeup ofoneYear9andfiveYear8s,whocompetedupayear. Thegirlshadabrilliantdayinbothtrackandfieldevents, withlotsofnewPBsmade.PearlandElodiebothwontheir races,andabigwelldonegoestoRuby,whowonall4 eventssheparticipatedin!Bothrelayteamsalsosecured firstplace.Asaresult,theInterswontheiragegroupoverall, theJuniorscameoverall3rd,andRoedeanwontheRelay Cup,andJumpsCup.

Charity‘iDrop’

LiteraryFestival

Studentsinallyeargroupswerejoinedbyprimaryschool childrenfromCityAcademyWhitehawkandStMarks PrimaryforourfirstLiteraryFestivalinrecenttimes.The studentswerechallengedwithcreatingabookaimedata primaryschoolaudienceinjustoneday. Thedaystartedwithworkshopsdeliveredbyarangeof authorsandillustratorsfromthefictionandnon-fiction world.Thestudentslearnedmanyskillssuchashowtofocus oncharactervoiceandhowtostoryboardaplot.Afterthis, theygotintotheirgroupstoplantheirbooksandassign theirroles,withsupportfromtheauthorsandillustrators. Afterlunch,theSchoolbecameaflurryofcreativeenergy, withpupilscreatingtheirbooksinalmosteveryclassroom. Thecollaborationandcreativitywerewonderfultosee,as werethecareandthoughtfulnessoftherelationshipswith ourvisitors.

JemimaandSarah,HeadGirls Whenwarbrokeout,Iwasinmytenthyearofthe11 yearswegotoschoolintheUkraineandsogettingready togotouniversity.IhadalreadycalledShevchenko universityinKyivtotalkaboutcourses.Butthenin February,itstarted.Ifoundmyselflivinginacombat zone.Me,mysix-year-oldsisterandmythree-year-old brotherwhohasasthmahadtogoandliveinthe basementwithmymum,dadandgrandparentsalong withmanyneighbours. Afteraweekmydadsaidwehadtoleavethebasement andsowesetoffbycarfortheborderwithPoland.My grandparentsstayedbehind.Itnormallywouldtake eighthoursbuttherewerecheckpointseverywhereand wehadtostopallthetimesoittooktwodays. Inthemorningtherewereoptionsofwatchingthe performanceof Matilda,goingonatouroftheschoolwith a6thFormstudentorvisitingtheArtExhibition,beforewe alljoinedtogetherintheCloistersforadrinkandgroup

InFebruary,duringhalfterm,asIwasrootingaroundthe atticinAustria,Icameacrossanold,dustybundlewrapped inpaperandtiedupwithstring.Insidetherewaswhat appearedtobeveryoldexercisebooks…oneofwhichhad thefamiliar‘Roedean’printedacrossthefront.AtfirstI imaginedthemtobesomeofLily’soldexercisebooksbut oncloserinspectionIwassurprisedanddelightedtofind theywereinfacttheexercisebooksusedbymygrandfather inhisroleasGermanteacheratRoedean.Insidewere lessonplans,draftsforgirlsreports,lettersfromEmmeline TannerandothermembersofRoedeanstaffsuchasN Woodcock…andsomeratherdelightfulapologyletters writtenbytwopupilswhohadbeenlateformy grandfather’slessons.Imaginemyfurthersurpriseon findingoutthatoneofthosepupilswasnoneotherthan LoetitiaMarshall,auntofMaryHenderson,Presidentofthe ORA.IimmediatelycontactedMaryandinvitedhertocome andinspectmywonderfulfindpriortomydonatingthe wholebundletotheRoedeanSchoolarchive.

In2016atRoedeanDayIwasthrilledtomeetanORwho hadbeentaughtbymygrandfatherandrememberedhis lessonsfondly.Anduntilnow,thatwasallIhadeverreally knownabouttheRoedeanlinkwithmygrandfather.

MaryHendersontakesupthestory;Thankyousomuchto Teresaforsharingthisfind,asseveralORswillknow,Ilove rummagingthrougholdfamilypapersandarchivesandam alwaysfascinatedwiththeinformationandconnections thattheydivulge.MycousinsandIweredelightedtosee thelettersfrommyaunt(LoetitiaStone(Marshall,No.3, 1939-45))toDrBrach.Wewerealsohighlyamusedtoread someofherreports“Shetriedsuccessfullytoovercome somedifficultiesandisprogressingbutfindsithardto concentrateexceptonthesubjectofmenusandcooking recipes”.Anearlyindicationofwhereherinterestand talentswouldlie;Loetitiawaslatertobeadomesticscience teacherinPlymouth.Shewasalsothemostwonderfulcook andwasextremelyaccomplishedatsugarcraft,creatingthe mostbeautifulcakesforweddingsandothercelebrations. Anotherreportstated“ThoughLoetitia’stalentsarenotin thelinguisticfield.shehasworkedwithlivelyinterest.She overcomesherdifficultieswithgoodhumourandhasmade somesteadyprogress”.WhileGermanwasobviouslynot herstrongpoint,shewassignificantlybetteratFrench.

AftermycousinsstartedschoolLoetitiataughtFrenchto primaryschoolchildreninthePlymoutharea.

TheBrachandHendersonfamiliesbothhavelinksto Roedeangoingbackmanygenerations,andsoitwas wonderfulearlierthisyear,whenalinkbetweenthetwowas discovered: Ihadalwaysknown,thankstothestoriestoldtomebymy aunt,LilyReitlinger(Brach,No.1,1943-1951)thatmyexiled AustriangrandparentshadbothworkedatRoedeanSchool duringtheSecondWorldWar…. MyfamilyhadfledtoBrightonfromViennain1938and verysoonfoundthemselvesforcedtomoveinlandfromthe coastastheywereconsidered‘enemyaliens’.Friends suggestedtheymovetoKeswickwherethefamilybecame firmlyembeddedintheRoedeancommunity,theSchool havingevacuatedthere.MyauntbecameaJuniorHouse pupil,mygrandmotherTeklaBrachplayedpianoforthe balletlessonstaughtbyJoanBarron.Mygrandfather,asan ‘enemyalien’despitebeingaJewishRefugeehadbeena POWontheIsleofManandonhisreleasejoinedhisfamily inKeswick.AccordingtothestoryIwastold,Roedean beggedhimtohelpthemoutwhentheirGermanteacher hadtogoonmaternityleaveandnoneothercouldbe found.Hehadnevertaughtanywherebeforehavingtrained andworkedasasolicitorandhehadalsorunabusinessin Vienna,buthetookupthepostandsubsequentlystarted teachingatRoedeanSchool.

EndofTransmission tellsthestoryofHIVfromthepoint ofviewofthevirus.JudehaslivedwithHIVfor20years butneverknewforcertainhowshecaughttheHIV.But thevirusdoes.HebeginsinKamerun(German Cameroon)in1916,skippingacrosscountries,continents, decades,anddiversehostsinachainoftransmissionthat endswithJude. Michelewasthesweetestandkindest personIhaveevermetinmylife. Everybodyknowsshewasbeautiful.In fact,herbeautyshonefromwithin,from hergoodheart,andthatwaswhat capturedmyattentioninthefirstplace. WhenIfirstdatedher,shewaslivingina spaciousapartment.Yet,shewaswillingto marryapoorguywhocouldonlyafforda smallapartmentonlyafractionofthesizeof whatshewasusedto.Shortlyafterwemarried, shewaspregnantandforpracticalreasons,she agreedtoshareanapartmentwithmyparents.Intheend, shespent18yearswithmyfatherinthesameapartment. Thiswasobviouslyhersacrificeforlove,andIamindebted toherforever!Sherespectedandcaredforherparentsvery muchandextendedthesameloveandattentivenesstoher

Franceswasnotonlybrightinthe classroombutenjoyedlacrossebravingthe fierceChannelwindswithdetermination. Shewasalsogoodattenniswhichwe learnttoplaywithourmotherandinthe SixthForm,golfourfather’skeysport. StudyinghardFrancesgainedexcellent‘A’ levelsandwenttoKing’sCollege,London gaininga2.1inFrenchwithGerman.After asecretarialcourseFrancesworkedatthe RoyalDentalHospitalandGuy’sDental Departmentpreferringthistypeof environmenttothemorecommercial.Later shebroughtacottageinSevenoaksand theninTunbridgeWellswhensheworked forafirmofSolicitors,havingalsostudied lawherself.Duringthistime,shemet Frankandtheymarriedon17thJune 1989atStMarysChurch,Kippington,our paternalGrandmother’sfavouriteChurch. FrancesandFrankenjoyedmanyEuropean holidayswhereherfluencyinFrenchand Germanwasnotable.Francesenjoyed speakingSpanishwhenstayingatourmotherand Stepfather’svillainMallorcaandalsolearntItalianto helpintegratewhenonmanyaholiday withFrankinLakeGarda.Latinmusthave helped!Francesrecoveredfrombowel cancerbutwaseventuallydiagnosedwith ararecomplicationofCrohn’sdisease whilebeingattendedtosocaringlybyher HusbandFrank.Sheisgreatlymissedby Frank,Emma,andIaswellasherNieces andNephewsonbothsidesofthefamily.
