ThiswillbemylastRoedeanianMagazineasHeadmasterof Roedean,andithasbeenwonderfultoseehowthemagazine hasdevelopedsinceitsintroductionin2016.Sincethenthe magazinehascoveredamyriadofstoriesabouttheSchooland ourincredibleORcommunity,andthisissueiscertainlyno different!
Asyouwillreadinthisissue,thescaleofachievementbyour students,andthesheernumberofactivitiestheyareinvolved withhasnotsloweddownatall.Supportingourlocalandglobal communityisincrediblyimportanttous,andsoithasbeen amazingtoseehowthegirlshaveembracedhavingdedicated yeargroupcharities,theresultingamountsraisedinthefirstterm oftheyearhavebeenexceptional,andwithmanyoftheyear groupsstilltoundertaketheirmainfundraisingactivityofthe year.
ThePerformingArtsdepartmenthasbeenasbusyasever,and ourrecentproductionof LesMisérables wastrulybreathtaking. Theshowisincrediblychallenging,withseveralroleshavingsolos, andthesingingandmusicbeingnon-stopthroughouttheshow. Year13arenowfirmlylookingtowardstheirfuturesbeyond Roedean,andhavebeencelebratingawiderangeofoffersfor theirnextstep,includingtheRoyalAcademyofMusic,Oxbridge, andNorlandinBath.
2023alsomarksthe125thanniversaryofusbeingsituatedon ourbeautifulclifftopandinourpurposebuiltMainSchool buildings.I’mlookingforwardtothevariouscelebrationsand activitiesthatwillmarkthisimportantanniversary–anddon’t forgettosavethedateforourGalaAnniversaryEveningon16th September.

TheCricketer’sTop20iswidelyacceptedasthedefinitiveguidetothebest cricketingschoolsinthecountry.Roedean’sinclusionintheguide,forthethird consecutiveyear,istestamenttothegrowthofcricketattheschoolinrecent yearsandthecommitmentofourpupilsandstaff.
Wecurrentlyhaverecordnumbersofgirlsplayingcricket(around350),the largestnumberoffixturesinthehistoryoftheschoolandareexpandingand improvingfacilities.Theplanisforthisdevelopmenttocontinueandforevery currentandfutureRoedeanpupiltobeofferedtheopportunitytoplaythe gameatalevelwhichsuitsthembest.
Supportforourlocalandglobal communityisfirmlyrootedinthe ethosatRoedean,andthishasbeen strengthenedevenfurtherthis academicyearwitheachyeargroup havinganominatedcharityto fundraisefor.Eachyeargroupwill undertakeacharitychallengeduring theyear,aswellasholdingmanyother smallerevents.Thisdefinitelygavea competitiveedgetotheChristmas Fair,aseachyeargroupcompetedto raisethemostfortheircharity!
Theresultshavebeenincredible,with arecord-breakingover£10,600raised atthefair.Addedtotheother fundraisingduringtheterm,theSchool raisedanexceptional£17,829inthe AutumnTerm.Andthisisbeforesome yeargroupshaveheldtheirkey fundraisingevent!

Wearenowlookingforwardtoseeing whatthegirlscanachievethisterm!
MrRousandMsMacdonaldfromthe MusicDepartmentwentonanexciting triptoGermanyon10thFebruary. Alongwith8studentstheyflewto Hamburgtovisittherenowned SteinwayFactory.Thedaytripsawthe groupleavingHeathrowintheearly hoursforHamburgwheretheywere metbyamemberoftheSteinway team.
Thepurposeofthetripwastohelp chooseanumberofmagnificent pianosthatwillsoonbeontheirway toRoedean.Thesewillinclude3 SteinwayGrands,aBostonGrandand anumberofuprights.Thestudentswill learnaboutthehistoryofSteinway andhowthepianosarecreatedby mastercraftsmen,usingonlythefinest toolsandmaterials.
Itwasawonderfulopportunityforthe students,andlookingtothefuture, thereishopethatRoedeanmayone daybecomeaSteinwaySchool.
AtthestartoftheChristmasholidays,theArt Departmenttookagroupofgirlsto Barcelona,forourfirstoverseastripsince covid!Theyfittedinahugenumberofsites andgalleries,includingParcGuell,the SagradaFamilia,CasaBatlló,the ContemporaryArtMuseumandtheDesign Museum.Thegirlshadafantastictime exploringallofthesesites(aswellasfittingin someshoppingandplentyofeating!)
Eachdaywaspackedwithlotsoffood, learning,walking,peacefulgalleryvisits,and timetosocialise–itwassomuchfunevery singledayandfeltmorelikeanart-themed holidaythanaschooltrip! – Keira (Yr13)

CongratulationstoMillie(YR13),whohasbeen offeredaplacetostudyforaBA(Hons)inEarly ChildhoodEducationandCareatNorlandin Bath.Thisissurelyoneofthemostprestigious childcareinstitutionsintheworld,andlastyear celebratedits130thAnniversary.
Lastingfouryears,thecourseisfamousforits levelofexcellence,anditsstrictcodeofconduct. StudentsstudyingatNorlandreceiveextensive trainingfromthebestintheirfield,aswellasa guaranteedsupportmechanismforlife.
Suchisthekudos whichcomeswiththe qualificationfrom Norland,thenannies areinsuchhigh demandthat14 employersare fightingforeach graduate.

Thankyoutoeveryonewho donatedtowardstheappeal,led byCamillaNightingale(JohnstonLyon,No.1,1981-89),toinstalla newpotterywheelintheArt Studio.Ceramicshavealways beenverypopularatRoedean, andalthoughwehaveakiln,we didn’thaveapotterywheel. Inmusic,weweredelightedwiththenewsthatKarena (Yr13)haswonascholarshiptostudyforaBachelorof MusicPerformanceattheprestigiousRoyalAcademyof Music.
Atheraudition,sheplayedthehugelychallenging ConcertoforDoubleBass byKoussevitzky,shethenwent ontoaninterviewandsecondauditionwiththedeputy principal.Suchanaccomplishmentforaverytalented player,oneoffiveDoublebassplayersatRoedean currentlywhichisexceptional.
Theapplicationandadmissionsprocessischallenging,and theyareallproudandrelievedthattheirhardworkpaidoff: Ellensaid,“Asthereareonly3universitiesinthecountry whichoffermycourse,myoptionswerelimited,so,of course,I’mdelighted!”,andAlyssasaid,“Iamreallyexcited, particularlyaboutbeingabletoworkwithProfessorTim Coombs,whospecialisesinElectricalEngineering!”.Gabby andLeaweretogetherinaSpanishlessonwhentheemail camethrough–Leasaid,“Waitingfortheofferwasslowly eatingawayatme.Iopeneditandjumpedoutofmy seat!”,butGabbysaid,“IwassonervousthatIcouldn’t opentheemailforanhour–thenwhenIdid,Iscreamed.”

Asixty-strongcastraisedtheroofoff theTheatrewiththreespectacular performancesofLesMisérables–the performerswerefantastic,thesets wereoutstanding,andtheHousewas soldoutforthetwoeveningshows. Itisatestamenttothedramatic prowessofthestudentsthatthecast includedactorsfromYear7toYear13. Congratulationstotheentirecast,the musiciansintheband,thebackstage crew,theTheatreteamwhobrought theshowtolife,andmostofalltothe Director,SusanWoodbridge,who mastermindedthisoutstanding performance.
Itwasbreath-taking.Sowonderfulto seesuchaslickproductionofthe worldfamousLesMisatRoedean.It feltlikebeingintheWestEnd,with youngeractorsandanall-female cast.Thebignumbersblewmeaway, theperformanceswereoutstanding (fromleadrolestocameosand chorus).Everyoneinvolvedcanbevery proudofwhattheyaccomplished.

Marisa’scareercontinuestobuilduponearliersuccessinthe BBC2series Industry and RogueAgent onNetflix,andshe willalsofeatureinGretaGerwig’shotlyanticipated Barbie filmlaterthisyear,starringthelikesofMargotRobbie,Ryan GoslingandWillFerrell.
MarisawasaregularontheRoedeanstage;staffcurrently atRoedeanwhotaughtMarisastillrememberherengaging performances.MsSophiaBartlette,AssistantDirectorof Music,vividlyremembersMarisa’sperformancein Tristan andYseult (pictured),duringMarisa’sfinalyearatRoedean. “Shewassuchalivelyperformerandacommandingstage presence–shereallybroughtthestagetolife.” Marisa’s earlyambitionsatRoedeanweretobecomeahumanrights lawyer,butafterencouragementfromherDramateacherto pursueacting,Marisaeventuallyfollowedherheartto auditionforRADAanddeferredherplaceatUCL.

Theexhibitionshowcasesthecolourfulanddynamicpopular cultureofSouthKoreaandincludeseverythingfromK-Pop costumestoK-dramapropsandposters,alongside photography,sculpture,fashion,video,andpopculture ephemera.Visitorsareinvitedtoexplorethephenomenon knownas‘hallyu’–meaning‘KoreanWave’whichroseto prominenceinthelate1990s.
Withtheexhibitionfeaturingaround200objects,digital displaysandmoreacrossfourthematicsectionstherearea numberofhighlights.TheseincludeK-dramaandfilm–the iconicpinkguardscostumesandgreentracksuitfromthehit Netflixseries SquidGame,K-pop–amonumentalthreemetrehighsculptureofG-DragonbyGwonOsangandan interactivedancechallenge,andK-fashion–over20looksby contemporaryhanbokandfashiondesignersfromKorea andKoreadiaspora.

GrowingupKatherinenever plannedtohavethree children!Whenshewent backtoworkafterherfirst son,shecarriedonasif nothingsignificanthad happenedinherlife, societalexpectationsteach usto,andshethoughtlife wouldcontinueasnormal.Priortochildrenshehadloved her10-yearmilitarycareerfollowedbyalmostadecadeat EY,formerlyErnstandYoung,andwasproudofwhatshe hadachieved;shehaspreviouslyservedinAfghanistanand IraqandwasontracktobecomeanEYPartner.However, seeinghertwoyoungestnexttooneanotherinapushchair aged7and21monthsrespectivelychangedeverything! Shehadchanged,heridentity,valuesandcorebeliefshad changedandshehadlearntaboutMatrescence–the transitionfromwomantomother.ThenewKatherinehad landed–nomorecorporatecareerbutcertifiedcoach, businessowner,mumofthreeunder4.
LearningaboutMatrescencehaschangedherlife.Thrivein Motherhoodwascreatedlastyeartoeducateandsupport womenduringthebiggesttransformationoftheirlives.She workswithmumswhostrugglewiththeiridentityand purpose,findithardtodefinesuccess,whocravetimefor themselvesandwhosuffermumguilt.
Asacertifiedcoach,NLPpractitioner,changeconsultantand mumof3,hercoachingpracticeofferspersonal,groupand corporatecoaching.Sheissomeonewhoispassionate aboutpersonaldevelopmentandwhothrivesonchange. ShewantswomentoviewtheirMatrescenceasanexciting timetolearnandreflectandasanopportunityforpersonal growth,achievementandfulfilmentwheretheycanregain theirsenseofidentityandbeproudofwhotheyareas mothers.

Originallythelibrary,thestunning OldRefwithitsfabulousviews andwidewindows,madeuppart oftheNewWingin1911along withthewonderfulArtStudio, whichremainsasitwastothis day.
WhiletheLawrencesisterswereHouse Mistresses,therewasnorealneedfor aseparateresidencefortheHeads. However,in1925,ayearafterthefirst appointedHead,EmmelineTanner, tookover,thebeautifulRoedean Housewasbuilt.1930sawthe swimmingpoolroofremoved,lessons inthepoolbecamearatherchilly experienceweimagine!
LeavingfortheWycombe cricketmatch,c1900 FoundationstoneThefollowingyearsweresomewhat sadderwiththedeathsofthe Lawrencesistersandastheconflictof SecondWorldWarbecamemore intensetheschoolwasevacuatedto Keswickin1940.TheAdmiraltytook overtheschoolfromtheWarOfficein 1941andtheschoolbecameHMS Vernon.

Afterfortyyearsofthegirls bravingtheelements,the indoorswimmingpoolwas openedin1970.1974marked theOldSanatoriumbecoming theSixthFormHouse,that wouldnowbeknownas LawrenceHouse.Overa decadelatertheCentenary SportsHallwasopenedafter theschoolcelebratedits
Asthewarfinallycametoanend, theschoolreopenedattheRoedean siteonJanuary241946,andHMS Vernonmadeadonationtoenable theschooltocompletetheexquisite marblingintheChapel.
Theschoolcelebratedits70th birthdayin1955,withcelebrations attendedbytheQueenMother,the visitwascommemoratedin1960 withadonationofastained-glass
centenaryin1985.Thiswasfollowed inthe‘90sbythenewTheatreand theScienceBlock.
In1998,wecelebratedthe100th anniversaryofourMainSchool building,andthenameRoedean,and thiswasalsotheyearJuniorHouse becameaSixthFormHouse,changing itsnametoKeswickHouse.
TheChapelcentenary commemorationin2006 welcomedthebeautiful mosaicwhichaddedto theAntechapelandwith theincrediblesupport fromourRoedean Community,webuiltthe All-Weatherpitchin2018 andcompletedthe theatrerefurbishmentin 2021.

JeanattendedBlackwellboarding schoolonLakeWindermereforseveral yearsfromage6,whereshelearnedto swiminthelakebybeingloweredinto itonarope;anexperiencewhich taughthertobeextremely independent,capableandresourceful fromayoungage.Jean'sfavourite memoriesofschoolwereofcourseat Roedean,whereshespentherlastfour yearsofschool.Shewouldalwaystalk abouthertimetherewithfondness, prideandnostalgia.Shetoldmeabout thevarioussportsshewouldplay there,includinglacrosse(Istillhaveher lacrossestickfromRoedean,whichshe keptwithheralloftheseyears), lessonsinelocutionandposture, actinginschoolproductionsand singingintheschoolchoir.Most importantwerethefriendsshemade there,suchasSusanMayoandSarah Hobson,withwhomshekeptintouch forallherlife.Wewouldoftenvisit Brightonduringthecourseofherlife andtakelongwalksalongthecoastal pathinfrontofRoedeanand reminisceabouthertimethere.
OnleavingRoedean,Jeanstudied MedicineandDieteticsinEdinburgh. Shetrainedasanurseandworkedat StGeorge'shospital,providingadvice andinstructionondietsforthesick. ShethentookadegreeinHome EconomicsandtaughtattheGirls PublicDaySchoolTrustschoolsin London.JeanmarriedJohnStuartGray onAugust291972inLondonand theyhadadaughter,Lucy,in Novemberthefollowingyear.
Theytravelledtheworldtogetherover thecourseofthenextfortyoddyears andJeanandStuartwouldoftenvisit andstaywithLucyforseveralmonths whenshewaslivinginSouthAfrica, AustraliaandDubai.Theywerean extremelyclosefamily.
Jeantookgreatpleasureinandwas excellentatcookingandentertaining friendsandfamilyathomeandalsoin cookingforfriends'eventsanddinner parties.Shewasfamousforherhomegrownherbgarden,whereshealso grewgrapesandmadewine.Her ChickenLemonTarragonandLemon Soufflédisheswereamonghermost renowned.Jeanalsolovedsingingin thechurchchoiratStMary'sin WimbledonVillage,whereshe
reconnectedwithfellowORSusan Mayo.Jeanwasthemostkind, generous,considerate,trustworthyand reliablefriend,wife,daughterand motherandalwaysputothersfirst. Theseadjectivesareconstantlyused todescribeherbyeveryonewhoknew herandallherfriendsdescribedheras theirbestfriend.Everylifeshetouched wasmadebetterbyherpresenceinit. Asherdaughter,shewasalsomybest friend,myrock,myconfidante,my champion,mysoundingboardand everythingelseamothercould possiblybe.Theworldwillbeforever changedwithherpassingbutIam gratefulthatIhadthechanceto spendmylifeuntilnowwithher.
LucyGrayRoedeanhassixensignswhichallusedtohanginthechapel beforefiveofthemweretakendownin1989andstoredin aglassfrontedcupboardintheantechapel.Fourofthese ensigns,originallygivenbyeachoftheHousesatRoedean followingavisittothebattleshipsoftheGrandFleetjust beforethestartofWWI,wereflownattheBattleofJutland andoneflownonD-DayatRoedeanduringWW2when HMSVernonwaslocatedattheSchool.Theremaining ensignhanginginthechapelwaspresentedtotheschool in1985byHMSVernonontheoccasionoftheschool’s centenary.
AtthebeginningofFebruary,wevisitedthetextile conservator,ZenzieTinker,inherBrightonStudio.Inorderto betterassesstheensigns,theyhadbeenlaidoutacrossthe floor(ofaconvenientlyemptyadjacentoffice).Nowseeing theminisolationyoucanreallyappreciatetheirsize.

Theseensignsarehistoric.ThelargestJutlandensign (approximately2.75mx5.65m)wasflownonHMS Hercules,aColossus-classdreadnaughtbattleship,the otherswereflownonHMSCollingwoodaStVincentclass dreadnaught,HMSNeptunealsoadreadnaughtandHMS CanterburywhichwasaC-classlightcruiser.
TheHMSCanterburyensignisparticularlyinteresting. Thereisonelargepatchonthelowerhoistquadrant. ThepatchislabelledMay31st1916inhandwrittenblack ink.Thisisarepairofbattledamagefromthefirstday oftheBattleofJutland.
TheensignwasalsoflownatSevastopolintheCrimeaon 24thNovember1918whenHMSCanterburywasthefirst BritisharmedvesseltoenterSevastopolfor56years.
