You’re here! You’ve made it! This is your first step into the world and we know it can be quite overwhelming. This will be new to you, but we’re here for you! You’ll be faced with real-world challenges like 9am lectures or whether to hit ‘Keep Watching’ when the black screen comes on Netflix and it’s 2am!

Through it all, we’re here for you along the way. From Freshers’ Week through to the Summer Ball (Which is one of the best in the country by the way…), and in this guide, we’ll take you through everything you can get involved with during your time at Roehampton!

It is truly going to be an amazing adventure though. This is a time in your life where you’ll start to really discover who you are, meet your friends for life and decide what you want to do with the rest of it! Don’t worry if not though, some of the most interesting 40-year olds still don’t know!

How to get through first year

You’ve moved into halls, you’re meeting new friends and looking to make the most of what’s on offer at Roehampton, but it can be quite daunting. We understand. That’s why we’ve put together some top tips to help guide you through your first year!

Get Involved There’s so much to do here at Roehampton. There are loads of clubs, societies and different ways to have fun. Take a look around Freshers’ Fair and meet the people who run the clubs. You never know, you could end up wanting to try something completely new and find a brand-new hobby.

Explore Take your time to explore the campus and enjoy knowing you’re in one of the greenest areas in London! Familiarise yourself with the area and get comfortable knowing it will be your home for the next few years. Don’t forget, you are in the capital city and there are so many experiences and opportunities waiting for you.

Tips continued

Learn to Cook

It’s All Normal…

We love Domino’s here at the RSU, but you should make sure that you’re not filling yourself up on pizza every night! Take a look at the food options around Roehampton and Putney, and even take some time to learn how to make some of your favourites for yourself. Cooking can be a great way of relaxing and is a valuable life skill to learn.

We said it earlier in this booklet; this can all be quite overwhelming, but that is totally normal. Speak to anyone who has been to university before and they’ll all tell you how hard the first day or week can be. You’re not alone and everyone is in the same situation. If you do need to speak to someone though, please pop in to the Students’ Union and we’ll see how we can help.

9

Join a Society Societies are the best way to try something new or explore your hobbies and interests during your time at the University of Roehampton. Whether you see yourself as an avid photographer or are looking to meet people to celebrate the same musical taste as you, we have over 50 societies here at the RSU and each one is unique. You can view the full list by heading to www.roehamptonstudent.com societies or by joining us at the Freshers Fair!

10

Join a Sports Team We offer a wide-range of sports and physical activities that you can get involved with here at Roehampton. Whether you’re a seasoned veteran or looking to try something completely new, we have something to meet the needs of all students. From Badminton to Yoga, Athletics to Cheerleading and Martial Arts to Netball – there are lots of ways to get involved. Head to www.roehampton.ac.uk/student-life/sport-roehampton for more information.

Welfare Do you need advice? We understand that times can get tough at university and we are always here to offer support or advice. Every year, students encounter issues relating to finance, their studies or even housing and our fully-fledged advice service is here to help. We have a number of online resources available to you at www.roehamptonstudent.com/support or you can book an appointment at www.roehamptonstudent.com/support/advice 12

Student Voice RSU is run by you, the students. You tell us what you want us to do and what we should campaign on.

Department Reps

We give you the power to suggest anything that you want to change. No idea is too big or too small and we honestly want to hear all of your ideas.

Department Reps are experienced Reps who represent each of the 10 departments at the University of Roehampton. They collect feedback, attend University meetings, and act as first point of contact for Programme Reps in their Department.

We will support you every step of the way. Submit your idea at www.roehamptonstudent.com/ideas

RSU is a democratic organisation and we base our decisions on the feedback you give.

Growhampton Growhampton is a sustainability project with a big focus on food. The project was started in 2013 with funding from the NUS Green Fund and is one of the most successful projects to have received this funding. Growhampton has continued to grow and develop ever since, furthering our aim to make ‘being green’ easy, whilst also making sustainability fun and engaging. We have created an edible campus with a number of growing sites and a polytunnel that gives our students the opportunity to learn about where food comes from and how to grow it. A great deal of what Growhampton does revolves around YOU, the students who dedicate their time to volunteer with us so find out how you can get involved at www.roehamptonstudent.com/growhampton
