The R.A.C. Rally Championship
T
he R.A.C.. Rally Championship was conceived back at the end of 2012, with brief details being announced at the prize presentation of the Roger Albert Clark Rally that year. The initial concept was to create a new historic championship which would introduce cars from a later era than was currently allowed. It was originally known as the “Pre 87 Championship, reflecting the widening of the categories of cars competing, but it would become known as “The R.A.C. Rally Championship”. This would ensure the continued provenance of the Roger Albert Clark Rally with its ethos of friendly and open competition. Organised by the same team who made that rally possible, the championship would prove to be extremely popular throughout the 2013 season. Once the series had been ratified and registration opened, an impressive number of competitors responded. This influx of numbers was overwhelming and suggested to the organisers that this was the time for this type of championship. Throughout 2013 the number of registered competitors grew and by the end of the season an impressive total of 88 crews had registered. Our ambition is to take that total to more than 100 in 2014. Originally planned as a seven round series, the early part of the year was decimated by the weather, with the first two rounds quickly cancelled due to the heavy snow which settled Wales. This meant that the first round proper was the Mid Wales Rally, www.racrallychamp.org
www.redkitestages.co.uk
Page 5
The R.A.C. Rally Championship
which started in the centre of Newtown. This rally attracted than 50 registered championship entrants, swelling the combined entry list for the event to well over 90 cars. The final count showed 29 BDA/BDG engined Escorts in a field that also included cars from Volvo, BMW, Hillman, Opel, Austin, Alfa Romeo, Sunbeam and Triumph. This huge number of entrants attracted a record number of spectators to watch in the forests of mid Wales and this unprecedented level of interest was to continue throughout the much shortened season. The skill and determination of the crews taking part throughout 2013 was a spectacular sight. The competition was close, fast yet friendly. The 2013 Championship year was settled in Wales at the end of the Red Kite, which had been rescheduled to September after the cancellation in February. The inaugural championship had been won in style by Marty McCormack and Phil Clarke taking three wins from four. The excitement of the first year is set to continue throughout 2014, when the season kicks off again on the Red Kite Rally. Malcolm Higgins www.racrallychamp.org

Welcome to the West Wales Rally Spares R.A.C. Rally Championship 2014

elcome to the 2014 West Wales Rally Spares R.A.C. Rally Championship organised by the Roger Albert Clark Rally Motor Club. In its inaugural year in 2013 this allnew championship attracted unprecedented competitor support and has consistently drawn stunning entries with quality and quantity to match.
Back in March 2013, on the Rally Marketing Mid Wales Rally, the championship got off to a flying start with a record breaking number of registered contenders taking part. This number bucked the trend of the last six years where there had been a significant decline in the number of historic entries received. In 2014 the championship will once again consist of seven rounds with the inclusion of the Severn Valley Stages one of the best gravel rallies in Wales. Competitors will count their best six results towards the end of the season awards. The remaining schedule mirrors the 2013 events, as we are keen to keep faith with the rallies that supported us from the beginning. Our aim is to have 45-55 stage miles per rally with usually a one day format and rallies on Saturdays wherever possible. In 2014 we will not include any asphalt rallies but this will be very much under review for 2015. Paul Lawrence Championship Press and PR Officer www.racrallychamp.org

Historic Stages and a return to our traditional date after the September run in 2013 year due to the unforeseen cancellation earlier in the year. Once again we would like to thank all of our sponsors for their continued backing in these difficult times, and the competitors for their support in making the Red Kite Stages a friendly, no-nonsense event with classic stages around the Llandovery area. We would also like to welcome registered competitors in the West Wales Rally Spares R.A.C. Rally Championship. We hope to see you for a good day’s motorsport on the 2nd February 2014. he television package for the 2014 West Wales Rally Spares R.A.C. Rally Championship will build on the roaring success of the 2013 coverage. Once again, David Winstanley and his team at rallytv.co.uk will continue to film all of the championship action for dedicated programmes on Motors TV. Each round of the championship’s seven rounds will be covered in detail in a 90-minute programme on Motors TV with multiple repeats and there will also be an end-of-season review programme to give the championship over 50 hours of TV coverage. Initial broadcasts will run in prime-time slots, typically three weeks after the rally. In addition to the TV coverage, each event will be featured on YouTube, with a report uploaded as soon as possible after each event. Alongside the TV coverage, the entire R.A.C. Rally Championship will again be available on iRally and will build on more than one million views achieved in 2013 for the championship and the Roger Albert Clark Rally. The free iRally App is available for the iPhone, iPad and Android devices and offers an incredibly popular rally video channel. Support for coverage of the 2014 WWRS R.A.C. Rally Championship comes from TV partners Amigos, JD Garage Equipment, Jordan Road Surfacing, Lloyd-Thomas Opticians, Lynwood Classic Engines, Rally

R
allying legend Paddy Hopkirk will be celebrated in the West Wales Rally Spares R.A.C. Rally Championship with the award of a major new trophy for the winner of Category 1 at the end of each season. It was 50 years in January that Hopkirk tackled the 1964 Monte Carlo Rally in his works Mini Cooper registered ’33 EJB’. He went on to score a landmark victory on the event with a drive that captured the nation’s imagination and instantly make himself a household name. Now, the biggest championship for historic rally cars in Britain will honour that achievement with the Paddy Hopkirk Trophy. The overall winner of the Walker Diecastings-supported Category 1, for cars from up to 1968, will win this very special award and it is hoped that Hopkirk will be on hand at the end of season awards evening to present the trophy. Fittingly, Mini Coopers will feature prominently in the 2014 championship with up to 10 cars expected to contest the new Aldon Automotive Mini and Imp Cup. This major new award for the category further underlines the championship’s commitment to Category 1 and that commitment extends to the TV coverage, which will include a dedicated Category 1 report from each of the seven rounds. With the Category 1 cars running first on the road on all rounds of the WWRS R.A.C. Rally Championship, the series is already enjoying unprecedented support from the Category 1 fraternity. www.racrallychamp.org

he full range of sponsors and partners for the West Wales Rally Spares R.A.C. Rally Championship brings to 27 the total number of organisations partnering with the biggest historic rally championship in Britain. With West Wales Rally Spares as title sponsor for the championship, the four major tyre suppliers in the historic arena have all continued as tyre partners: DMACK, Dunlop, Kumho and Pirelli. Category sponsors for the coming season are Walker Diecastings (Category 1), Capital Construction (Category 2), Rob Smith Rallying (Category 3) and Holton Homes (Category 4). New for 2014 is the Welsh Challenge, run over the four events in Wales, which is being sponsored by Geoff Jones Motorsport. Aldon Automotive has already been confirmed as the sponsor of the Mini and Imp Cup. Specific product awards on each event will be provided by Fuchs Lubricants (Spirit of the Rally Award) and Mintex (Best Improvement on Seeding) while Holton Homes has continued to support the Clubmans Award, which provides a 50% entry fee refund for one crew on each rally. Special end of season awards are supported by Martin Jones Transmissions (most entertaining driver), Weir Laundry Equipment (best under 25 driver) www.racrallychamp.org

From the Llandovery start on Sunday morning, crews will tackle five fast and flowing Welsh stages and the competition is set to be intense across an entry that is topped by the Ford Escort Mk2 of Nick Elliott and Dave Price. Heading the field away will be a fabulous line-up 14 cars in the Walker Diecastings Category 1, where the Paddy Hopkirk Trophy awaits the end-of-season champion. This is the best field of pre ’68 cars on a UK rally for more than two years and includes contenders in the new Aldon Automotive Mini and Imp Cup. Running at the head of the pack will be the Porsche 911 of Paul Mankin and Desmond Bell in their first event in the ex-Derek Boyd car.

Set to rival Mankin in the Category 1 contest are Ian Beveridge/Peter Joy (Volvo PV544), Simon Wallis/Graham Wride (Lotus Cortina), Edmund Peel/Dessie Nutt (Porsche 911) and father and son team Bob and Dale Gibbons (Ford Cortina GT). The Mini contest will be the centre of great interest as Clive King and Russ Joseph take on the identical cars of Irish brothers Frank and Ray Cunningham. Unlike his younger brother, Frank has experience of gravel rallying, but has not rallied a Mini for the better part of a decade. In turn, the Cunninghams will be co-driven by brothers Arron and Ross Forde. Running alongside the Category 1 cars at the head of the field, and enjoying the very best road conditions, will be the up to 1600cc cars from Categories 2 and 3. In Category 2 are championship newcomers Paul and Daniel May (Ford Escort Mk1), while the Hillman Avengers of Graham Thatcher/Robert James and Keith Davison/Henry Richardson take on the Sunbeam Talbot of Dave Hopkins/Tony Vart in Category 3. In the Capital Construction Category 2, it is husband and wife crew Chris Browne and Ali Cornwell-Browne who head the field but they can expect tough opposition from the similar Ford Escort Mk1 of Roger Matthews/Paul Morris. In Class C3, for the non-BDA powered cars, Irishmen Stanley Orr and Brian Cairns are welcome additions and will take on the similar Ford Escort Mk1 of David Kirby/Chris Rixon and the fresh Opel Ascona A of Peter Smith/Patrick Walsh.

Elliott and Price head the entries for the Rob Smith Rallying Category 3, but face a gaggle of very rapid challengers led by 2013 BHRC champion Richard Hill and Pat Cooper in their newly-prepared Ford Escort Mk2. Tomas Davies and Eurig Davies are racing against time this week to rebuild their Escort from a bare shell to start as car number three, while Irish aces Owen Murphy and James O’Brien are next away in their Talbot Sunbeam Lotus and are determined to take the overall fight to the Escorts. Adding superb depth of quality to the Category 3 field are more very quick Escort Mk2s for Terry Brown/Den Golding, Meirion Evans/Iwan Jones, Darren Moon/Elgan Davies, James Potter/Bob Duck, Tim Freeman/Paul Wakely, Jerry Bailey/Graham Lacey and championship sponsor Gareth Lloyd with Ryland James. Alongside Murphy in Class D4 is another former BHRC champion James Stait in his Sunbeam Lotus and the glorious Triumph TR7 V8 of Peter Jones/Graham Joseph. Meanwhile, championship newcomers Shawn Rayner and Declan Dear head Class D3 in their Pinto-powered Escort Mk2 and have a gaggle of rivals including local ace Gareth Lewis, Ben Friend/Sean Kennedy, John Baker/Seyyan John and Paul Fry/Mike Steele. The Holton Homes Category K for FIA specification cars starts with the Escort Mk2 of Tom Coughtrie/Calvin Cooledge, which should be joined by more FIA cars as the season develops. Running within the concurrent modern event are the cars in Category O for open two-wheel drive cars and heading the R.A.C. pack is the spectacular Toyota Starlet of Leyton Waters and Kevin Bowcott. Their rivals include Escorts for Neal Dwyer/Danny Fenning and Barry Stevenson-Wheeler/John Pickavance and the Opel Manta of brothers Simon and Alistair Crook. www.racrallychamp.org
